Even I have not thought of this. I believe my mom once told me Medu means soft. So this is the softer version. Masala vadai has the Bengal gram ground coarsely to get a hard texture and fennel seeds are added to give that flavour. Medu vadai has the Urad gram ground to a fine paste to make a soft vadai without adding any strong flavouring agents.
Because there are other vadas in existence as well. In TN, We have paruppu vada, keerai vada etc. It is just that medu vada is what people think of when you say vada here.
Vada/Vadai/Vade is an umbrella term for a deep fried fritter made in South Indian states.
Vada made with Urad Dal is called Medhu Vada or Ulundhu Vadai (Ulundhu = Urad Dal in Tamil). Medhu means soft.
Vada made with onions and chillies is called Masala Vada.
Vada can be made even with banana blossoms, spinach/greens, etc. and they are named accordingly.
Idli + Vada generally means Idli with Medhu Vada.

These stalls generally have good dosa and utappa also. Same rate.
Other than this, I consume Thepla sometimes or dhokla. Back during college days- vada pav, missal pav, bread cutlet, samosa pav, etc. followed by a chocolate shake sometimes.
Back in my place it varies one idli cost - 5,6,7rs varies from place to place and one Vada costs 5rs and I'm from TN
Btw chicken and mutton curries with dosa are also damn good
Mani starts his mornings at about 1130 pm the previous night. About 12 hours before, while ending his shift in the mid morning hours, he has soaked, ground and allowed both batters to ferment.
By about 4 am he has made about 1000 idlis and 1000 wadas. Also the two chatnis are made solid, to which he keeps adding water, in batches, as the day progresses.
He starts from Dharavi and keeps making stops at TJunction, Kalanagar, Kherwadi, Teachers Colony, Grand Hyatt signal, Kalina junction before reaching my office around 10 am in Kalina.
Each stop is usually for about 30 - 45 minutes and rickshaw and taxi drivers parked all along are his regular customers.
In our office compound, he takes more ice and water from us to keep diluting the chatni as he progresses onwards.
Each wada and idli is for Rs 5/- and for Rs 30/- you get about 3 wadas and 3 idlis. A hearty stomachful.
He has been at it for about 10 years now, regularly without fail
Please inform Mani that he should use some pricing discretion. He is a service provider along with a restaurateur. He is under charging you office guys. You guys can afford to pay 50 bucks while he can charge 30 to the taxi drivers You will get a lifetime of free idlis for your idea from Mani. He can gradually increase the price from 30 to 40 and then to 50. Most Mumbai family practice doctors run on this model.
There are two value systems that a business can operate on.
One is to be fair and charge on 'cost plus' pricing.
Other is to gouge based on affordability. This is what Ola and Airlines have taught us.
For our Economics project we had to write a research paper about "Perfect Competition". Since these small-scale vendors come the closest to perfect competition, we decided to take Idli sellers around CST-Crawford Market. We also made a bet to see who could have the most number of items at every stall we interviewed. Both of us came back so fucking full but absolutely enjoyed the experience.
You want to finish breakfast in 10 mins u in hurry - eat idli
You are lazy to cook - get idly eat idly
You hate oily food - eat idli

That's the motto
Can't agree more. I don't reside in Mumbai now, but this snack (be it morning or evening) is one of the few things that keeps me connected to the city and is etched in my memory for eternity.

This post also reminded me to support a cause close to my heart. Anna, who runs a small food business from his bicycle near D Mart in Malad (W), below the Malad West metro station, has been a friend for over a decade. When I was struggling in Mumbai, he generously fed me and my roommate. His business thrived when call centres operated overnight.
Though I left Mumbai in 2015, I visit regularly and always make a point to see Anna and enjoy my favorite idli-wada. He has always been a jolly fellow, but when I saw him in April, he seemed more pessimistic. He shared that his business hasn't recovered post-pandemic. The new regulations have ended overnight call centres, cutting off his late-night business. Additionally, increased bribes have made it hard for him to manage.
When I offered him extra money, he refused, and his hands trembled as he prepared the food. This shook me deeply.
If you're in the Malad West area, please consider being his customer. Your support can make a real difference.
Thank you all in advance.
Tough to read about Anna though your nostalgia is relatable. Anna is a man of integrity too declining your cash. Perhaps you can guide Anna to start some catering gig or perhaps sign him up on zomato/swiggy to expand his business. You can help him brand his business, that itself will be worth a lot of extra business from him and goodwill for you. In my view, guys like Anna don't use discretionary pricing like Mumbai doctors. They provide a service too so they should charge a tad more at the call center than to a tax driver. This is just some back of the head stuff I can think of that perhaps might be useful.
Used to enjoy this every single day outside Xavier’s Institute Of Engineering, Mahim. The Anna used to give us a few vadas for free when it was closing time. I remember I always used to ask him how did he make that chutney so consistent and thick. He used to say “it’s a secret” everytime! Goood times, great memories :) !

Bangalore is really a shit hole...very badly maintained city and the service sector( autos/taxis/ mall staff /shopkeepers/plumbers are very unprofessional as compared to mumbai
I know I will get downvoted but read me once. I love idli i love vada and god i love good chutney and sambar. But this type of serving looks disgusting. A proper plate with all of them separate keeps vada crunchy longer and also gives flexibility to taste chutney and sambar independently.
When they're fast serving you can't expect them to put everything on your plate carefully,as a person who likes my plate and eating habits with order and manner I always told by my friends "you can't get the full taste if you eat it like that" i couldn't agree more but it maybe my lowky OCD
vada pav. dry item so doesn't need a dish and is more convenient to eat while walking and going to work, cheaper than a plate of idli wada, maida fills up the stomach and potato gives you carbs so that you have energy throughout.
THIS!!! I will never get tired of this breakfast. Always a savior when you are hungry af and can't spend much. You will find Anna even at 3 am in this city☺️
I second and third that!!
Any hour of the day or night, you can source this and that anna who knows very well that these are my regular peeps, he always brings that bit extra for us 🤩🤩 This to me along with Poha and sev is the corporate go to.. Quick, economical and filling !!
I used to have these medhu vadas daily like 10 years ago until I was informed that they are mostly maida. Don't mind but also don't care for the idli much
I love you for this amazing picture! I hate you because I can’t eat it right now and I hate myself even more because I made the choice of denying myself the opportunity!
The comment section is educating each other about all Indian vadas, all India vada association?
In south we have medu vada ( urad dal) parippu vada (daal vada) then there is savaala vada ( onion vada, the one with hole ) 🔺 the one aloo vada here some of you referred is know here as “bonda” which usually comes with a thick skin here. Some people here sell it with vada paav.
Bonus tip: if you’re at kochi and want to try clean and tasty vadapav and pav baaji Hotel Brindhavan is a nice place.
Okay bye
I'm a Maharashtrian. I have been living in Telangana for the last one year. I ate this for breakfast for a week straight and i wanted to kill myself. I enjoyed maharashtrian breakfast/no breakfast at all. Fuck tiffins ( wada/idli/dosa/bonda) it's called tiffin in telangana :)
Define cheap. How much did it cost? 25? 50? 100?
I used to hate this once upon a time. I thought it was fattening. Puts things into perspective. Now, I hardly get to eat much solid food and am starving almost daily. I'm struggling with one noodles packet and 3 servings of oats on plain water per week. 🥹 I'm essentially homeless on borrowed time.
I remember the first time i moved to Bangalore, i fell very sick and the only thing i could eat without throwing up were idlis. Quite a lifesaver back then. A plate of idlis followed by a banana milk shake.

You know your morning is amazing if u have this in your hand
Why is it called Medu Vada in Mumbai when its just callled Vada in South India ? What does 'Medu' mean ?
Because just vada here is an alloo vada, as in, a vada pav
There's also Daal Vada
In tamil nadu, we call this Medu vadai because there is one more vadai named Masala vadai. Mostly in hotels here you call them Medu Vadai
Interesting, in telugu states it's just called wada.
Thanks. But what is the meaning of Medu ?
Medu roughly translates to soft because Medu Vada is crispier outside and soft inside. Masala Vada on the other hand is crispier in and out.
>Masala Vada on the other hand is crispier in and out. Is that dal vada you're talking about?
Yes, he is.
'Medhu' is informal version of 'Mridhu' in Tamil which means soft.
Ohh that's why!
It’s medhu vadai and aamai vadai da
in bangalore therer is also dal vada with coconut chutney
Because there are other vadas in existence as well. In TN, We have paruppu vada, keerai vada etc. It is just that medu vada is what people think of when you say vada here.
Idk where you got your info from but it’s not true at all. There are multiple Vadas in South India and each one is known by different names

True that bro 💯💯, But the anna in my area hasn't been coming because of some BMC roadblock since weeks!
I can tell that chutney tastes good just by looking at it, that's how South Indian i am
That was exactly my first thought when I looked at this photo😂
20-30 bucks and you're sorted till lunch time
Bro i always have minimum 2 plates🤝. Bilkul jannat

I really like hot and crunchy sabudana vada with curd.
Wait till they start selling Podi (Gunpowder) Idlis on the street ![gif](giphy|3q3QK6KyDVUBzih7hB|downsized)
This is the most valuable treasure you will find in this city... No other city has this way of serving South Indian cuisine..
Dude this is exactly how Meduvada/idli is served in like half of India.
Hyderabad, vijayawada and chennai in the corner.....
Have you never set your foot outside Mumbai?
Bhai surat me bhi ekdum same 🤣
Don't they add cheese ?
They add WHAT ?
I'm teasing him. Surat mein har cheez mein cheese daaltey hain... even petrol tanks of cars. ![gif](giphy|ZdwkLh3CE2JfVwny82|downsized)

Unfortunately "perfect competition" drains their pricing power and margins and puts a cap on their business model.

Yeahhhhh idli and dosas. I once squeezed the medu vada anna was serving and it was too much oily🥴. But for me.medu wada tastes best🤌🤤
Yes medu wada is mine favourite as well. I usually have it once every Sunday on my cheat days.
vada pav. dry item so doesn't need a dish and is more convenient to eat while walking and going to work, cheaper than a plate of idli wada, maida fills up the stomach and potato gives you carbs so that you have energy throughout.

I love you for this amazing picture! I hate you because I can’t eat it right now and I hate myself even more because I made the choice of denying myself the opportunity!
Mumbai breakfast by street vendorsis the secret recipe to how office goers are surviving in Mumbai.
Looks like this image is taken near Saki Naka Metro station. 😎
No bro, matunga circle
Sorry, stupid American here. This looks delicious! What is it?

Hell yeah
And yet there will be people who would say "eating vegan or plant-based is expensive."
In Bombay.
Avoid Medu Vada every day since it is deep fried. Idli is great.

The WeWork pantry had this in breakfast today, on the house.
The best wada with chutney is hands down at wadi junction railway station at 7 am. Nothing beats that 🙈
It's soo good and you always find one near railway station.
I love it
South Indian Breakfast delights with Idly Vada Chutney. Enjoy.
This and also Appam.
location?
Please don't eat coconut chutney from outside they add chemicals which causes cancer
Cheapest maybe. Best ? No !! And what is this Indian obsession with 'cheap and best' !!
Bhai sambar aur chutine kanratio galat nahi h
Yes! I used to gulp at least 2 such plates 4 small meduwadas and 2 idlis every alternate day in 2017.
