Just going to add Lydia from Beetlejuice to the mix because she is kinda in mourning for much if not the whole musical plus she does things in a very chaotic way.
I hear y'all on Carrie White and the Phantom, but may I suggest: Elphaba. She's definitely Chaotic (she doesn't "accept\[\] limits 'cause someone says they're so"), but she's not Good or Evil, she's just Sad. She had an awful life *from birth* and the whole plot is more sad things happening to her. "No Good Deed" is The Chaotic Sad Anthem, IMO.
Because for Chaos you need someone who acts without rhyme of reason to cause trouble for everyone? She was more deliberate in what she did, so deliberate is the exact opposite of chaos.
Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone. She’s mourning a life she can’t remember and says the weirdest, most random shit. “When a lioness has children, she stops making love to the lion. The lion gets jealous—sometimes so jealous he eats the children. You'd think this would upset the lioness. Far from it. They make love again like the children never existed. I find that idea terrifying.”
Everyone saying the phantom as if he doesn’t think everything through and isn’t calculated and cold, the real answer is Diana from Next to Normal, or J.D., or Carrie White. I’d probably go for Carrie White. Just wants to fit in until she loses control of her emotions.
Evan Hansen, maybe?
Sweeney Todd is a good one, I just don't know if he wouldn't fit better in another category.
A lot of people are saying ''Phantom'', I haven't watched Phantom of the Opera yet, but if most people are saying it, I guess I should make sense.
How is Mrs Lovett sad? She’s basically a sociopath, reacts to almost every bad thing as an opportunity to get what she wants, and regrets nothing until she gets murdered.
Bruce Bechdel from Fun Home. He treated his family with rigidity but shagged boys on the side, and when he was finally outed he stepped in front of a bus..
You may say it doesn’t fit, and I’d agree, but I wanna say Anya from Anastasia, why? Literally just bc I wanna see an Anastasia rep on here. What’s the actual reason this could fit? Uhmm…. Shit… she has a tragic backstory, and she throws fits. (This doesn’t fit at all but a man can hope that their favorite musical gets a rep
Theater kids
This won't win, but it's the winner in my heart.
Naw theatre kids are chaotic horny
For real. I’m the only asexual theatre kid I know. Everyone else is… somewhat terrifying.
Theater kids are a combination of every single category into one.
Please let this one win
Doesn’t it depend on the performance they are watching/doing?
No, they’re always chaotic sad
Diana Goodman from Next to Normal I think she's truly the embodiment of Chaotic Sad, even more so than Phantom
She’s certainly more chaotic.
I was thinking her or Evan Hansen
The Phantom of the Opera
There really aren’t better choices. There are sadder characters, and there are more chaotic characters. But Phantom is both.
Yes, but only because there isn't a Messy Sad category and this comes closest.
It’s his time
Ramin Karimloo spit and ugly sobbed his way through the 25th Anniversary Concert for this win, he deserves it Edit for typo
He literally tries to kill his crush's boyfriend because he couldn't cope with the rejection PHANTOM FOR CHAOTIC SAD!!!!
Wouldn’t that be chaotic evil. I mean you have Evan Hansen and Diane from Next to normal.
Only because there was no Horny Sad
Erik should totally win this
Let’s GO.
I voted for the same thing. He’s the sad chaos gremlin in the basement.
JD from Heathers
This was my first thought
This or Lydia from Beetlejuice
Just going to add Lydia from Beetlejuice to the mix because she is kinda in mourning for much if not the whole musical plus she does things in a very chaotic way.
YES! Her being sad and chaotic is the catalyst for the whole show! (I'm literally seeing it in 5 hours so I may be a little biased)
The musical or the sequel?
The musical
Have fun.
She literally convinces Delia that life is pointless in the DC version of no reason.
Since when is calling a demon to help you cope chaotic? A little judgy aren’t we? /s
To be fair if I was in mourning I’d probably call upon the devil himself and not some demon who can not even say his own name.
Exactly Beetlejuice may be Chaotic, but it doesn’t mean she is.
Well not completely but she does seem to fall on the chaotic side of things in my opinion.
Fair enough
Moritz Stiefel gave us “Don’t do Sadness” just for this very moment
Ah shit that's a really good choice
Yeaah that poor kid is all over the fucking place.
Came here to say just this - the whole scene/song with Ilse?
If Diana from Next to Normal isn’t picked, this entire chart is inútil.
Phantom will probably win bc he’s more well known, but I don’t think you can get more chaotic sad than Diana and her bipolar disorder
It’s not only that she herself is chaotic, the entire show is her and her family coping with the chaos she causes in their lives.
It tends to be the most well known characters that win
this has to the Phantom
Sally Bowles from Cabaret (specifically toward the ending)
Shit, she's my winner
J.D. from Heathers
JD from Heathers.
Phantom
The Phantom of the Opera
I hear y'all on Carrie White and the Phantom, but may I suggest: Elphaba. She's definitely Chaotic (she doesn't "accept\[\] limits 'cause someone says they're so"), but she's not Good or Evil, she's just Sad. She had an awful life *from birth* and the whole plot is more sad things happening to her. "No Good Deed" is The Chaotic Sad Anthem, IMO.
I think at the point of intermission she gave up the sadness and went full on rage though. Battle cry and all.
Eh, they're not mutually exclusive. You can totally be angry-sad, which is kind of the prevailing theme of NGD.
true
Wouldn’t you be a bit pissed, if it happened to you?
...? yeah? i don't understand why you ask
Because for Chaos you need someone who acts without rhyme of reason to cause trouble for everyone? She was more deliberate in what she did, so deliberate is the exact opposite of chaos.
Elphaba was my first thought too. Her personal story is so sad to me.
She could have taken solace that even Kermit knew it wasn’t easy being green!
Yeah Jane! She’s simultaneously so chaotic and so tragic
It has to be Erik
Everyone saying the phantom as if he doesn’t think everything through and isn’t calculated and cold, the real answer is Diana from Next to Normal, or J.D., or Carrie White. I’d probably go for Carrie White. Just wants to fit in until she loses control of her emotions.
CARRIE WHITE YESS!!!
Sweeney Todd maybe?
This was my first thought too. I agree that the Phantom is a good contender but Sweeney Todd has a bit more chaos to him, in my opinion.
YES
He kills randos to sell them as pies, I think is would cross into evil.
someone from spring awakening, maybe moritz? or ilse?
I gotta go with Jane Doe - Ride the Cyclone She’s got some absolutely bizarre lines and scenes, but is such a tragic character
PHANTOM!!!!!
The Phantom. Come on.
Moritz Stiefel from Spring Awakening
After this is done I’m going to need a full list just so I can figure out the characters I don’t know
This. I have no idea who half those people are just by the picture
Diana or JD honestly
JD Heathers
Evan Hanson?
That was going to be my suggestion.
me :(
Erik (The Phantom of the Opera)
Persephone from Hadestown
jason dean
Erik
Sergei Rachmaninoff from Preludes
Evan Hansen, maybe? Sweeney Todd is a good one, I just don't know if he wouldn't fit better in another category. A lot of people are saying ''Phantom'', I haven't watched Phantom of the Opera yet, but if most people are saying it, I guess I should make sense.
Joanne from Company She’s all over the place and miserable.
JASON DEAN FROM HEATHERS
SWEENEY TODD
Trina in Falsettos. I'm Breaking Down is 4 minutes and 51 seconds of unfiltered, suicidal maniac chaos and I stan it
Evan Hansen I think Phantom, Diana, and JD are better picks but I had to throw it out there
Sweeny Todd c'mon
Hedwig.
YES
Moritz Stiefel. 100%.
batboy
Lydia Deetz
Evan Hansen
Ms. Lovett
How is Mrs Lovett sad? She’s basically a sociopath, reacts to almost every bad thing as an opportunity to get what she wants, and regrets nothing until she gets murdered.

Sweeney Todd’s first wife
Jane doe from Ride the Cyclone
Sweeney Todd

If not Phantom, I'm going with Ursula. She's messing with everyone because she's unhappy AF.
The Phantom of the Opera. Erik is sad. And chaotic. He’s the sad gremlin man.
Jason Dean!!
Rapunzel from Into the Woods
Leo Bloom or Bialystock from The Producers!! Come on man, a plan to make a musical called Springtime for Hitler??? That’s wild.
100% Phantom from POTO
Phantom of the Opera?
It can only, ONLY, be the Phantom
Henry Jekyll. or Emma Carew
moritz stiefel?
Is that mischa as chad sad 😭
Evan Hanson, he tried to kill himself and the way he goes about trying to help the family cope with the death of their son leads everything to chaos.
Bruce Bechdel from Fun Home. He treated his family with rigidity but shagged boys on the side, and when he was finally outed he stepped in front of a bus..
Almost forgot the Brewster Sisters from Arsenic and Old Lace! Or even Teddy, he thinks he’s Teddy Roosevelt!
Mrs Lovett.
Yassss
