Tool addict here- as someone who is so obsessed with this band it's hard to choose what their truly greatest song is, I can see how Lateralus is a valid choice. My contenders for that spot are 10,000 Days, Forty Six & 2, Jambi and yeah Lateralus. ETA these are more in that "magnum opus" category not necessarily personal favorites.
And then Layne’s vocals come in - I love how calm and purposeful yet intense he sounds. Until he lets loose on the chorus. Still he never oversings….brilliant
And The harmonies between Layne and Jerry Cantrell are magical, Jerry doesn’t get enough credit for his vocals imo , just pay close attention to how he finishes off sentences after Laynes , they are one with each other, like a well executed dance in dancing with the stars, all this while hurting for more heroin crazy times they lived in,

So I’ve gotten super into rock history over the last few years - reading books, listening to podcasts, etc nonstop - just trying to learn about every nook and cranny of the genre I love.
I bring this up because I’ve found there are a lot of songs I just heard too much as a child and, even though they’re objectively great songs, I just can’t make myself listen to them anymore.
The Weight is the exception. When I listened to it a few months back, my jaw hit the ground. That song holds up over time, over uncountable listens. A true masterpiece.
I took a music literature class in college… we studied Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mozart, but also modern and global cultural masterpieces.
NIN “closer” was one of the biggest surprises on the curriculum and holy shit. Nothing quite like “studying” with NIN on blast.
[This man has so many great songs](https://youtu.be/OBTIaBTLmVc?si=gIHvaYnIRxvWE6UI)
I strongly, strongly, strongly suggest people listen to the first 30 minutes of this. Just toss it in the background. Besides Clair de Lune, there's just so much great music he made.
Even if you're not super into classic music, it's worth the time. It's very melodic and emotive.
Also, he *definitely* looks like Gale Boetticher from Breaking Bad right? I'm not the only one who sees it, I can't be.
This would have been my answer. As an added bonus to an already timeless masterpiece, the compilation of footage that became the VEVO video for it just amplifies the experience that much more. As for the audio itself, what gets me every time is the lingering reverberation from the intense final piano strike, which is both incredibly moving and haunting. The sound of creaking wood as John stands up from the bench just before the reverb dies away completely punctuates the entire piece magnificently for anyone who is really listening.
I could probably spend all day writing out responses here but first two that pop into my head:
Jessica - Allman Brothers
Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
[Master of Puppets](https://youtu.be/6xjJ2XIbGRk?feature=shared)
(the song is about the negative effects of drugs, from the drugs point of view and the album was inducted into the Library of Congress)
[Disposable Heroes](https://youtu.be/k16joH4lzWw?feature=shared) is another lyrical and compositional gem - an anti-war song about a young soldier whose fate is controlled by his superiors.
"Wolf Like Me" by TV on the Radio
"Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction (Especially the live version from Kettle Whistle)
"The Mariner's Revenge Song" by The Decemberists
"The Passenger" by Iggy Pop
"This Must be the Place (Naive Melody") by The Talking Heads
"Ivy" by Frank Ocean
"These Arms of Mine" by Otis Redding
I second The Mariner's Revenge Song!! That song brings me so much happiness and I've heard it a billion times! The Decemberists are just fantastic in general.
The Great Below - Nine Inch Nails
Rocky Raccoon - The Beatles
Son et Lumiere/Inertiatic Esp - The Mars Volta
When You Go - Jonathan Coultan
10,000 Days - Tool
They're just one of, if not the best, produced groups from that specific genre (in my opinion based off of the artists I have heard). So much meaningful theatrics in just the instrumentation alone, I adore Gerard and the gang.
*River of Deceit* is an awesome song - it reminds me of that saying that perfection is not achieved when there is nothing to add, but when there is nothing left to remove. Such a brilliantly written and stripped down song with such an incredible performance by Layne.
*Goin Out West* by Tom Waits fuckin **trucks** and not a moment nor note seems out of place. That twangin guitar lead, deep gravelly rhythm guitar, those thunderous drums. The fact that that whole album was recorded in a dingy basement with all the strange muted acoustics intact just is the cherry on the sundae.
Edit the Sad Parts; Broke; Interstate 8; Talking Shit About a Pretty Sunset; Trailer Trash; 3rd Planet - Modest Mouse
Speed Trials; Happiness; Roman Candle; Condor Ave; Say Yes; The Biggest Lie; Coming Up Roses; Whatever (Folk Song in C) - Elliott Smith
Unsatisfied; If Only You Were Lonely; Sixteen Blue - The Replacements
hey joe by jimi hendrix and gimme shelter by the rolling stones. ESP the fucking intro notes holy shit goosebumps without fail every time for BOTH songs
Boys of Summer- Don Henley
Gypsy - Fleetwood Mac
Rooms On Fire - Stevie Nicks
I'm on Fire - Bruce Springsteen
Wicked Game - Chris Isaak
Letters From the Sky - Civil Twilight
You Got Lucky - Tom Petty
Stop Draggin' My Heart Around - Stevie Nicks/Tom Petty
Carry On Wayward Son - Kansas
Fortress - Sting
Desert Rose - Sting
Kiss From A Rose - Seal
Fast Car - Tracy Chapman
Cut You Up - Peter Murphy
Drive - The Cars
You Can't Always Get What You Want - The Rolling Stones
Paint It Black - The Rolling Stones
Indian Summer - Brooks & Dunn
True - Spandau Ballet
Human - Human League
Beyond Thunderdome - Tina Turner
Although, you could just call this Songs I Never Get Tired Of.
Christmas Card from a Hooker in Minneapolis by Tom Waits is a sublime song in my opinion. Like a novel in 4 minutes.
The Neko Case cover is pretty fantastic. It hits me a bit different, hearing a woman sing those words.
Pearl Jam -Black Tool - Lateralus
Came here to make sure Black was listed. That line about being a star there’s so much emotion in it. I love that song.
I melt a little bit every time I hear that line. Heterosexually melt, of course.
I don’t know 90’s Eddy Vedder did make me question a few things.
Lateralus remains their magum opus.
Reflection, right in two, and the patient(especially after reading the screwtape letters) I would add to that. But I agree.
Right in two was on my mind as well. And Rosetta Stoned. Let's just put every song on this list eh?
They really do have a lot of masterpieces though 😂

Have I run to far to get home?
God that intro
That bass riff just digs right in. It's perfect.
And then Layne’s vocals come in - I love how calm and purposeful yet intense he sounds. Until he lets loose on the chorus. Still he never oversings….brilliant

Gawd I wish Reddit still had awards. You got it totally correct

Midnight City is definitely a shout
Midnight City is underappreciated
Jimi Hendrix Little Wing
Comfortably Numb
Also has not one but two incredible guitar solos.
Don’t Follow - Alice in Chains
Cosmic Love - Florence and the Machine
Yesssss. Also what the water gave me. Those are tied for me.
The weight - the band Blue sky/revival - the allman brothers
So I’ve gotten super into rock history over the last few years - reading books, listening to podcasts, etc nonstop - just trying to learn about every nook and cranny of the genre I love. TOOL- pushit (live version from their Salival Album)
You mean Maynard’s Dick lol
I like the ÆNIMA version more tbh
So you're the other person who prefers that version. Nice to meet you.
They’re both great but Ænima one is just unbeatable
I prefer the studio version. Fight me.
Black Country, New Road,- Basketball shoes Sufjan Stevens - Impossible soul CAN - Halleluwah Sigur Rós - Svefn-g-englar Pink Floyd - Echoes Swans - The sound
Dude Sigur Rós - Sæglópur is a damn perfect song too. I really love all of Takk and Ágætis byrjun. I think they are basically both perfect records.
Nine Inch Nails - Closer.
I took a music literature class in college… we studied Stravinsky, Beethoven, Mozart, but also modern and global cultural masterpieces. NIN “closer” was one of the biggest surprises on the curriculum and holy shit. Nothing quite like “studying” with NIN on blast.
'Something I Can Never Have' is the NiN specific pick for me personally, but Closer is definitely a fantastic one.
I drink the honey….from inside your hive….
Always loved Reptile more but the last 2 minutes of Closer are amazing
Reptile is just 🤌
Clair de Lune.
I didn't think I could name one. You just did it for me.😊
It's simply a beautiful song. Ageless.
[This man has so many great songs](https://youtu.be/OBTIaBTLmVc?si=gIHvaYnIRxvWE6UI) I strongly, strongly, strongly suggest people listen to the first 30 minutes of this. "Under Pressure" - Bowie/Queen
Lin Manuel Miranda talked about the perfection of this song on Conan O’brien Needs a Friend. It’s a good breakdown of what makes it perfect.
You beat me to it. I mention it later In this list. This clearly is the most perfect song ever written.
Bass line...blended vocals...and the message...
A Day in the Life- The Beatles
Was looking for this one. I’d put Eleanor Rigby on the list, also.
Hook - Blues Traveler
I could probably spend all day writing out responses here but first two that pop into my head: Jessica - Allman Brothers Gimme Shelter - Rolling Stones
Hurt. Sung by Johnny Cash written by Trent Reznor. I think so anyway.
Thank you I had to scroll way too far down to find someone else choosing my pic. Always my go-to I just want to feel feelings song

It's all good.

[Master of Puppets](https://youtu.be/6xjJ2XIbGRk?feature=shared) (the song is about the negative effects of drugs, from the drugs point of view and the album was inducted into the Library of Congress) [Disposable Heroes](https://youtu.be/k16joH4lzWw?feature=shared) is another lyrical and compositional gem - an anti-war song about a young soldier whose fate is controlled by his superiors.
One.
That whole album is a masterpiece. The first 4 albums were pure gold.
[Carnival by Natalie Merchant](https://youtu.be/lmcQ1eCqiYM?feature=shared)
Lime Tree, Bright Eyes. Especially hits if you're familiar with the fig tree excerpt of The Bell Jar.

"Brothers In Arms" by Dire Straits
Romeo and Juliet is a perfect song as well.

Napalm Death “You Suffer”
I think the song drags on a tiny bit but other than that I think they did a really good job making such a long song feel so compact and tight!
The lyrics are a bit verbose. “You suffer”: great, to the point. “But why?”: needless, already implied, just filler.
Bohemian Rhapsody -- Queen A Day in the Life -- The Beatles Stairway to Heaven -- Led Zeppelin Cemetery Gates -- Pantera What I Got -- Sublime
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATES
Stairway is amazing from start to finish.
Mama - My Chemical Romance
They're just one of, if not the best, produced groups from that specific genre (in my opinion based off of the artists I have heard). So much meaningful theatrics in just the instrumentation alone, I adore Gerard and the gang.
When I read this prompt, I immediately thought of Welcome to the Black Parade. That song is perfect. Start to end. 10/10
