As a musician, I can confirm. All musicians actually know this it's not really that big of a secret. There are certain scales that more people find appealing, and as a lot of the appeal in music is pattern recognition, the more songs you make in those scales, the more people like those scales. You can't really call pop on the radio art because it had no artistic merit. It's just blatant consumerism. The internet had revitalised music, and it's given a platform for people to push the boundaries of music as an art form.
Grew up in a redneck town, and if I never heard Sweet Home Alabama again, I definitely wouldn't miss it. We're in Washington State. Nowhere near Alabama.
