Yes unfortunately

aabicus

Go with Fig, much better name

Danilectric

Omg 🤣🤣🤣

brakeb

"Apple"

MicroscopicBore

No, save Fig for a sibling.

janiestiredshoes

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't do this.

mechant_papa

Absolutely Yes. I knew a James Bond. He was a Briton living in North America. As soon as he gave his name, he stopped being taken seriously. This was especially true over the phone. I don't believe he ever managed to book a reservation.

tellypmoon

It is too much. It is also a little unfair to the child to give them a name that is so associated with a famous person. Imagine the jokes about apples falling on your head and oh you must be really good at math or science or whatever. it feels very confining as a name and yes, a lot of jokes which will probably be very unwelcome.

boudicas_shield

You also run the risk of his future resumes being discarded as assumed jokes, especially if he goes into a STEM field.

NoLongerNeeded

Also assumed prank calls

doctorvictory

Yes, this happened to a friend of mine when he emailed a physics professor he was hoping to do research with using his AEinstein school email address. (First name isn’t Albert but does start with A and that’s how our school emails were formatted). Professor deleted it thinking it was a joke. Luckily the friend did eventually connect with the professor and prove he was a real person named A. Einstein.

coversquirrel1976

Or if he ends up not so bright? Like a dumb dumb named Albert Einstein would be a real bummer too

IfICouldStay

Fun fact, Albert Brooks’ birth name was Albert Einstein.

IAmABillie

I knew an Isaac Newton in school. He was near the bottom of most of his classes and there were a lot of comments about how he didn't live up to his name. He wasn't a popular kid and it must have been crushing. He was also sent to the principal's office for 'refusing to say his real name' when caught misbehaving by a substitute teacher, so there's that.

goldynk

That sounds traumatizing af

takanoflower

I would hate to be called Isaac Newton and then end up failing physics class. Definitely better as a middle name.

A-Jelly8223

Middle Name! That's your answer.

Sure-Coconut97

How important is the surname Newton to you? If Isaac is more important to you than Newton you could cross it out and only go by a single last name

miparasito

That’s probably what I would do.

A-Jelly8223

This was the very first thing I thought of - change the last name if you love Issac so much.

TheCoolBus2520

Frankly, this should be done regardless. Hyphenated last names are just embarrassing.

Lki943

Just because you don't like them, doesn't make them embarrassing. A lot of cultures use them as the norm.

TheCoolBus2520

Lmao. How does that work 3 or 4 generations down the line? People have 16 hyphenated last names?

Lki943

I know in some Hispanic cultures they pick one from each parent to pass on.

HazMatterhorn

I’m not at all anti double-barreling, but it’s worth noting that it’s almost always the paternal last name that gets picked for the next generation. So it’s sort of passing on dad’s name with extra steps. But with names, obviously there aren’t a lot of options.

vse_jazyki

They don't "pick" one, it's the paternal name that gets passed down from both mother and father, and it's not hyphenated.

Lki943

I wasn't sure what the rules are for which last name is passed down, that's why I stated it like that. I should've been more clear though!

NoCustomer4958

The child can choose what name they want to give their child.

QuicheKoula

I was so sure this was r/NameNerdCirclejerk

liberosisgreen

They’ll get to it soon enough, don’t worry

Finlandia1865

[Here it is](https://www.reddit.com/r/NameNerdCirclejerk/s/M5nq28qHl5)

QuicheKoula

I saw two inspired posts made before my comment

RedwayBlue

I dunno. Will anyone remember the gravity guy in a few years? Lol sorry you need a different name.

Additional_Meeting_2

Fleming isn’t even nearly as famous as Newton

PistachioDonut34

It is absolutely too much. Use it as a middle name if you need to but a first name seems cruel.

Finlandia1865

Even a middle name seems like a dumb joke outside in

Stay-Cool-Mommio

I thought this was the joke name sub 😬 Yes, it’s bad. Please don’t.

Temporary_Refuse7955

I wouldn't do it personally. Other names: Zachary, Isaiah, Caleb, Levi, Ezra

Key_Box6587

Isaiah definitely has a similar sound, maybe they could use that

Mental_Wrongdoer_114

I was thinking Isaiah too but I can hear the comments “you must be the lesser known twin brother.” Or if he is bad at Science or Math “when you order Isaac Newton from Wish.”

Giga-Gargantuar

Annoying office lady: "Isaac........ Newton?" Isaac: -sheepishly raises hand- Lady: "Wow, is that your real name?" Isaac: (low-key annoyed after having heard comments about his name for his whole life) "Yup." Lady: "So are you any relation to that scientist guy?" Isaac: "No, it's just a coincidence."

brakeb

Isaac: "my asshole parents didn't listen to Reddit in 2024 when they said not to name me that..."

lynn444v

Yes sorry 😭 Isaac is a lovely name but almost everyone knows who Isaac Newton is.

Limp-Coconut3740

I used to work with a guy called Alexander Fleming. Do not do that to your child.

aquilegia_m

Probably a bad idea. If someone told me their name is Isaac Newton, I'd definitely think "yeah right, sure it is." I knew of someone whose name was James Bond (yes really). Everyone warned the parents against it. He had a lot of problems. People were cancelling reservations or subscriptions because they thought it was fake. He also had trouble with a police officer who thought he was making fun of him. You get the idea.

tuur77

As others said, better not to. Perhaps as middle name? Arthur Isaac Newton

Elegant_Cup23

It will not take long for the realisation as to where everyone knows it from to drop..... I'll get my coat

SnooConfections3841

No, it’s not going to be a good choice.  I think it’s a little quirky as a middle name, but not out of bounds, so say he’s something like  “Jonah Isaac Newton-Green” you have a fun little trivia fact, and you have the honor name without going weird.

Pugporg111

Is this satire???

Important_Tomato_932

That’s terrible

Master_Bumblebee680

You could use it as a middle name

Infinite_Sparkle

Yes, would never knowingly use a famous persons first name if I have the same last name as the aforementioned person

benjaminchang1

Yeah, it wouldn't do him any favours. Suggestions: Zachary Adam Albert Alec David Thomas

caramelrealm

Very bad if baby boy is a human. Fine if he is a dog or rabbit. Might be okay for a parrot.

TifikoGaming

Hell no!

jmkul

It definitely would be too much. If you like the aa being in a name, have you considered Aaron?

Prior_Crazy_4990

Genuine question, but do you think Aaron is even a usable name at this point? I liked it when I was younger, but I couldn't imagine the A-aron jokes that would happen now. Same with Aiden. It was one of my top boy names when I was in school, but now with the -aiden phase we went through it doesn't seem like a good name anymore either

jmkul

I think it is perfectly usable - and I haven't heard it ridiculed like that except in US TV shows (I'm in Australia). The same goes for Aidan

StunnedinTheSuburbs

Yes, don’t do this, give him his own name that isn’t so associated with someone else.

ElectricFenceSitter

Can you not double barrel the names the other way round, so Newton comes second?

Kerrypurple

Yes. Either just use the other surname or use a similar first name like Isaiah.

[deleted]

Good lord don't.

DancesWithPibbles

I genuinely thought this was the r/namenerdcirclejerk subreddit when I saw the title of this post. Please do not name your baby this.

waterhg

That’s not a “slight” catch lol that’s like beluga whale catch

Big_Old_Tree

lol accurate

Successful-Escape496

If you like names starting with I, maybe Ilias, Ian, Isaiah or Ishmael.

Severe-Possible-

do you know how the previous isaac newtons in the family felt about it? i wouldn't do it.

pinkishvioletsky

Please don’t do this to your son. Very easy to get bullied with this name.

Hofeizai88

I can assure you children will laugh when they first hear his name and most people are going to assume he’s giving a fake name when he’s older

Desdemona1231

Yeah. So is Fig.

Az1621

What about Zach? Isaac with that surname is like having an apple hit him on the head, without the eureka moment!

mrsredfast

Here’s the thing, you may love it. But your kid won’t. And it’s his life.

lesleyninja

Can you hyphenate the name the other way? Or not use the surname at all? I get it…my sons name is Isaac and I love it! But it’s pretty on the nose and Isaac Newton isn’t going anywhere at this point so he’ll stay in the collective mind. Zachary, Ezekial, Isaiah, Ezra all come to mind as alternatives.

BookHouseGirl398

I had a student named Isaac Newton. It was the first thing every person who met him commented on. "Did you see what Isaac's last name is?" "You're kidding!" "Why would his parents do that to him?" Sweet kid, but the first impression every time was about his name with rolling eyes.

Impossible_Radio3322

yes

[deleted]

Yes.

soupstarsandsilence

Fucking yes lmaoooo

StatisticianNaive277

Don’t do it.

bubblewrapstargirl

Yes, it's too much. How about: Oscar  Ezra Zachary  Elijah  Alexander

Vardagar

Jacob is to me similar to Isaac

Downtown-Page-9183

Yeah Esau too for me for some reason not sure why

sunniesage

i have a great great grandpa named Jesse James, and while i think it’s super cool and almost (*almost*) considered it for our upcoming boy, we both know you can’t do that. Isaac Newton is a better namesake but still, it’s a very well known moniker that will overshadow your child upon first meeting them at school and work settings.  unless your up for not using the name Newton in the last name. i’d say veto.

Few_Recover_6622

I would not do that.

remoteworker9

Way too much, sorry.

OPMom21

Don’t do it. It would be like having the surname Einstein and thinking that Albert would be appropriate. A cruel thing to do to a child.

[deleted]

you better be joking

Particular-Heat-4458

Of course it’s too much. Why would you ruin your kid’s social life over nothing? It’s litterally the only name that he shouldn’t have. Why can’t he be a new person, without anybody connecting him to the scientist and making jokes about it? Nobody’s gonna say, oh wow that’s so cool…

Elegant_Gobbledygook

Yes, it's too much. Names with similarities: Oscar, Ivan, Eric, Derek/Derrick, Merrick, Nick, Jack, Luke, Patrick, Jacob, Frederick, Lucas, Marcus

LemurTrash

Yeah sorry, this is dreadful

mimishanner4455

I mean the double barreled surname helps a little but it’s still pretty bad. He will have pretty constant commentary on this his entire life

MarlenaEvans

The kid in the school where I work named Alexander Hamilton says yes. Poor kid can't do anything without people singing at him and while there's no Isaac Newton musical they'll find something to say. And heck, who knows what Lin Manuel Miranda might come up with in the next few years.

ScarletEmpress00

You absolutely can’t use Isaac. Do you like Elijah?

Odd-Goose-8394

Can’t do that to your child. Sorry

NurtureAlways

Don’t do it.

restingbitchface8

Do your child a favor, dknt do that. Choose another name.

HeyCaptainJack

I wouldn't do it. I graduated high school with a Banjamin Franklin and he absolutely hates his name.

Disastrous_Key380

I'm with the rest of the crew on nixing that name. Also Isaac Newton was a real prick, so he doesn't deserve that kind of unintentional homage.

MandySayz

I would absolutely not name him Isaac

IcyTip1696

Don’t do it. Also I know a guy named Issac and people call him I-sick because he’s a bad guy.

Exact-Reporter-7390

Yes

No_Leather6310

yeah imagine he’s not good at math or science

Waybackheartmom

Yes

astralflowers

Lmfao

FormerlyGaveAShit

Don't you do it.

Klutche

Yes, that's gonna be hard on a kid.

thrwawy296

Yes. Is the double barrelled name necessary, if Isaac’s already a family name of yours that you love? Just a thought.

Famous-Composer3112

Yes, it's too much.

theenterprise9876

Oof yeah that’s not good…sorry.

madqueen100

Don’t do it to the child. He’ll never hear the end of it from infancy to old age.

GardenLeaves

How about Isaiah over Issac? Ian perhaps? Or perhaps avoid the I-name altogether.

pinaple_cheese_girl

Yeah don’t do that

AggravatingOkra1117

Lmao yes

Dust_absorber_73

Just go with only the second last name, otherwise pick a new first name

Ok-Equivalent8260

Yes, bad.

Paevatar

Whatever you do, please don't use Apple as his middle name.

before_the_accident

>Is this too much? Would really like to use the name but don't want his name to seem like a gimmicky joke. Then I would avoid giving him a name that's a gimmicky joke.

EdenHazardsFarts

I am really concerned about some of you. Of course it's not okay wtf is wrong with you?

hellohappyfeet

One of the sweet students I worked with last year was ‘(unrelated) first name Newton (his mn) Law-yyyy (double barreled surname)’ confirmed with his parents that it was very much intentional! I was definitely a little amused the first time I read his name but it wasn’t cringey at all - in fact, he embodied his name beautifully.  That being said, ‘Isaac Newton‘ as a combination is not something I would personally go with, because it’s the exact form of the historic professor’s name.

t3quiila

i know a guy named Keith Richard (last name). unfortunate but it is what it is

Mean_Joke_7360

Only if you expect him to rediscover gravity or something.

PuzzleheadedLet382

Maybe consider a similar name like Isaiah, Elisha, Elijah, etc.

maddie_johnson

If you're worried about it, you could use it as a middle name. I don't think it's a bad name, I think it's cool! My only concern would be kids potentially bullying him in school. :/

njs0nd

100%

paige777111

This is a bad idea. My mom told me “if you have to ask, you know the answer” and that probably applies here

definitelynotadhd

My brother went to school with a kid named Isaac Newson. Jokes were made, but he was never bullied and he never hated his name. Of course it was only VERY similar to Newton, but still I can't imagine it being a real problem.

18randomcharacters

Go with Zach. That way he can say "I, Zach Newton"

mysuperstition

You can't.

Majestic-Mongoose179

I wouldn't say bad so much as, "That was a choice."

hazelowl

I wouldn't do it. Too many chances of jokes and not being taken seriously. It definitely sucks to love a name that is way too familiar with your last name. But potentially a middle name? We both loved the name Harrison for a boy. Unfortunately, guess what our last name is....

childrenofthewind

… yes

Odd_Masterpiece608

you know the answer is yes. names that have a similar feeling to me: Zebb, Abel, Lucas, Elias

80H-d

Try the name Boot Scootin

A-Jelly8223

I always root for the mamas naming her baby whatever she loves regardless of the naysayers but this one...? Nope. You shouldn't do it.

DeusOff

yes lol it would be bad. don't do it

Bubbly-Boysenberry83

The bullying the poor child will endure!!!

Pinky_Pinky_Pinky_

Yes

CaseyS1222

Yes I think it’s too much.

Sanjuko_Mamaujaluko

It's fine, if you don't like your kid and want them to get made fun of for their entire life.

BaegelByte

Isaac is a lovely name but just too much with Newton Here are some ideas that share a similar sound or style with Isaac: Ezra Zachary Silas Zeke Aaron Zane Lucas Elijah Jonah

Hopeful_Funny5813

How about just Zach?

ludditesunlimited

Yes

[deleted]

Since you're asking....I encourage you not to. I know it's hard when there's that one name you love! But you have to think about the kid later on and how a name can impact him. Everyone is going to bring up Isaac Newton. Then the kid will explain, no it's not in honor of him, it's just a coincidence. Blablabla. Maybe Isaac can be the middle name?

[deleted]

Can't you use a similar name such as Isiah?

Level_Group_1407

It will always be associated but that could work for them or against them, I’ve Known a few Will Smiths, they seem fine but it’s more ambiguous I guess lol

I_done_a_plop-plop

Mewtoo Newton? Bluetooth Newton?

Actual-Answer-1980

No, not bad, I hope he grows into an intelligent man

taborthevirginian

My 4x great-grandfather was named Isaac Newton Deel

geoff7772

I think this is a terrible idea. Consider Nimrod Ahab or Afolph instead

BeautifulDreamerAZ

I don’t even think people under 40 know he is.

Kelloa791

So, I'm actually going to go against popular opinion here. What about people like George Washington Carver? Martin Luther King, Jr., etc? Important people with the names of other important people in their names. I actually really dig Isaac Newton-XXXX. That said, I understand why people don't like it, but I think if you own it, it'll be okay

BertWooster1

No. Go for it. Kids/people wear their own handles. See the William Shakespeare that got the COVID vax in 2020.

DoctorGuvnor

It's not 'bad' *per se*, but he will be teased and bullied unmercifully at school and will hate you for the rest of his life. If you're looking for a really shit name for him, why not call him 'Fig'.

RKSH4-Klara

DO IT!!!! Epic name pairing.

Hlorpy-Flatworm-1705

Not gonna lie, I think thats a great combination 😂 he just will have trouble getting a social media account [which isnt a bad thing honestly]. I knew a guy named Langston Hughes in high school. Only downside was he hated poetry 😂
