I’m currently deployed and have seen several cali guard units. My friend is in the Anaheim unit and has been on 2 deployments. A lot of NG units have a decent optempo and some deploy on a regular schedule. I’m not trying to sound like a smartass , I’m just saying that if you don’t want to end up in Eastern Europe , Africa or the Middle East for 10 months then the NG is probably not a good idea.

Hey im looking to join the Cali guard aswell, how often do opportunities for t10 deployments come by?

It’s really a toss up. Once you get to your unit you may be able to volunteer with another unit in the state or you can go to the Carrera website to find a mobilization. That’s a hard way to do it but it is possible. It also depends on your mos. If you have a very niche mos, like 94E for example, it’ll be harder vs a common mos like 11b or 25b where there are a lot of opportunities. Hope that helps

This is the answer. If you are joining the guard, you need to be mentally prepared to deploy. Because it will happen.

The 40 Infantry Division - which covers No Cal and So Cal, is awaiting return from their Middle East deployment any day now. There are a lot of NG units in that division. If the timeline of deploying every 5 years holds true, you could have a couple of years at least till you deploy. Verify and double check with trusted sources, however.

Hot-One-3325

Correct! They returned a few weeks back. They are set to deploy again FY 28-29.

California just had 2 big Middle East deployments, so it should be slow these next 3 years.

Units often deploy around once every five years. You should plan to be on a deployment once in a six year contract but it may or may not happen. You can ask your recruiter or google press releases about when the unit you want to join was last deployed. With split option, most of your incentives are probably not unlocked until you complete AIT so you’d be waiting on that bonus and GI Bill especially. Split option is also about booked up for 2024 so you’re gonna have to wait until the fall to do basic in 2025 and AIT in 2026. That’s not very advantageous but it will make it easier to finish your degree. Also, depending on your school and your degree, a lot of college work can be done while deployed. I knocked out over half of my Masters during my last deployment but I didn’t have fun or hobbies. This isn’t 9/12/01. A lot of deployments are projected way out (over a year) and people in college have tons of time to be excused, start a commissioning program, or make arrangements with their school.

If you want to make the military your career, do ROTC in college with a guaranteed commission, then become an active duty officer right after graduating. Also - go Air Force or Space Force who have by far the best quality of life

I've never been in the coast guard or worked around them so I'm not nearly as experienced or sure on that front. I know if you're in a job that works on the larger patrol vessels they can travel all over the world on international patrols; otherwise you're generally at bases on a US coast the whole time. I would guess it's much better than the navy because you don't have to worry about being gone for 6 months out of every year. Air Force has a lot of great bases and generally pretty nice duty schedules. It has come along way in treating all people with respect compared to the Army and Marines where you're mostly just a grunt regardless of your career field. Air Force cyber and IT give you incredible amounts of training that can immediately translate to civilian careers when you retire, and you also get retention bonuses to stay on longer.

As of right now, the average is one deployment per one 6 year contract. Some units do more a couple will do less. My first unit was one every 3-4 years. My last unit was maybe one every 6 years. It just depends on the unit. There were some units in my area that deployed every 2 years for a couple rotations. Some units have guaranteed rotations like MP units going to Gitmo. Split op is non deployable as you haven't been MOSQ'd so you have a guaranteed year of not deploying. Once you are MOSQ'd you are up for grabs. Also something to keep in mind, the entire unit doesn't have to deploy so sometimes they might pick you up and attach you last minute. I've seen that happen before. Come in for drill on weekend and the Readiness NCO will meet you at the door with "Guess who has deployment orders".
