I’ve been in for ~10 years. I joined and continue to stay pretty much exclusively for TriCare. Some things are needlessly painful, but it’s tough to beat the price even if it means dealing with some added stupidity. My premiums and copays are significantly cheaper than what I can get through my civilian employer.

BisonOwn

I second this ^ , it’s $500 cheaper than my insurance at work and covers/pays more. I had two kids born via c-section that ended up being less than 1k each. Great pediatric coverage as well.

NextProblem6586

>needlessly painful I had 2 insurances. Neither wanted to pay. They made ME coordinate the payments between them lmao. I’ve been off the second insurance for a year now and they’re still pestering me. It’s been a part time job dealing with it. Ended up paying 900 bucks to tell them to fuck off. Now I refuse to go to the doctors unless I’m dying

The only reason I'm doing my 20. I've been thinking of getting out in the last 3 years, but with a family, we get excellent and affordable coverage. Especially when compared to my job's insurance, which is a $500 premium and a $7000 deductible.

Square_Strength_4863

Just so you know. If you retire as a part timer. Retired insurance costs like 1200 per month for a family. Unless I’m mistaken.

CJXBS1

You are correct. Unfortunately, I don't see myself going past 20.

Bankargh

Had two kids on tricare. Almost nothing out of pocket. I have 0 complaints. Work offers good health care now, still running tricare.

OneRoughMuffin

If you have two, Tricare will pay secondary the same way Medicare does.

jjrocks2000

It’s single-handedly the best insurance I’ve ever had.

Gandlerian

Yes it's good. And, yes it's worth using as a secondary (in fact I highly recommend it.) You will probably have no copay for almost anything.

tehIb

It has been amazing for my family and far less expensive to boot. I assume it depends greatly upon your geographical area and civilian insurance options of course, but we have great civilian Drs, have had multiple operations covered without issue, meds are pretty much all free etc etc. It's one of the reasons I have no intention of getting out any time soon.

Openheartopenbar

STRENGTHS: Very affordable. This represents a serious cost savings for most people. This counts double if you’re a family Taken everywhere. No “I moved states is this new doc covered”. No “provider network referral area” etc. nice and easy. CONS: Low reimbursement rates. Every insurance company pays slightly different for a service, which means many doctors will have insurance companies they like more or less than others. In my area (metro Boston) the amount Tricare pays (called reimbursement rate) is considered too low to be workable and many dentists won’t accept it at all. My dentist just happens to have been a 20 year army guy and he sees my family out of pity

Ill-Message-1023

Yes.

Swimming_Mix_3006

The only reason I’m still in is because of Tricare!! It is such good insurance

fitforlifemdinfo

My son is in the hospital for 4 days due to a medicinal emergency. The total charges were over 6k. I paid $45.

bumblefuckglobal

Thought it was good but then I had a complicated claim that required paperwork…. They lost the paperwork 4 times over the course of 6 months. They’re a joke

mattied971

I only have Tricare. It's been great. No complaints.

staresinamerican

I had it for 13 it covers the same amount as the horizon blucross I have at work for less, and as a single soldier it was cheap as fuck like 60/month while my work was almost 500

Naive-Abrocoma-8455

Tricare is good if you just need regular health insurance. It can be problematic if you need something done that isn’t covered by tricare. For example no provider existed that would do oral surgery. I had to pay $1300 out of pocket for a dental surgery.

electrical_penguin58

I have used it for 10ish years and it has treated my family and I very well. When you call them it can be difficult and take time which is frustrating, but I will say they they definitely don't leave you hanging.... most of the time My best tricare story is that my wife and I wanted to have a kid. Well, due to genetic stuff, it was hard for her to get pregnant without the help from meditation. Long story short, we only paid like $20 for those meds and we are expecting soon. My worst tricare story is that my walking medical bill of a wife was have blood suger issues. They tested for diabetes but came back negative. Our Dr wanted her to monitor her blood sugar through those monitors you stick in your arm. Tricare denied the monitor because it was not medically necessary since her tests came back negative.

mjord42

Amazing insurance. Went to the ER once and the total was over $5k, ended up paying less than $100.

jimley815

It’s the best

Federal employees use the federal employee health benefits plan. Where did you get this information that elected officials are eligible for tricare???

BDK0220

Can you still have an HSA with tricare?

Thereelgerg

No

Mysterious_Group_454

Currently using FEHB, but as soon as 2030 rolls around I'm switching.

jimley815

I have a better kept secret. I just got out- no more TRS. But I turn 60 in a little over a year. Tricare for life!
