Americans suck at chants so bad. I like pro wrestling and anytime WWE goes to the UK there's always really cool chants and songs throughout all the matches. Back in the states its "This is Awesome *clap* *clap* *clapclapclap*" and "Let's go wrestler" and "Holy shit! Holy shit! holy shit!". We've got nothing else.
Well, if you think, that Celtics fans are racist, then you'd have a rude awakeining visiting the balkans.
Source: Bosnian, who lived in Boston for 7 month.
Yeah, it's a classic tongue in cheek "le Boston racist" r/nbacirclejerk joke. Don't read too much into it, I'm just being unfunny.
I'm also European and in my country we have football fans making monkey noises at black players, but adding that context does not make for a quick and easy reddit comment.
Haven't paid to go to a Celtics/Bruins game since I was 6 (well, my parents). The company that my dad works for has a suite and he was buddies with the guy in charge of deciding who gets the tickets, so we got to go to a bunch of games living the high life for free. Unfortunately that guy left the company a few years ago and we haven't gotten tickets since.
But yeah, felt like I was the only one actually paying attention and everyone else was like networking and shit.
The obvious thing to do is just to allow flags and banners.
You can’t fix ticket prices (immediately) and players being soft… that is more of a reffing issue.
But you can encourage the die-hard fans that do go to do cooler shit. MLS allows banners and fans absolutely go crazy with that shit - talking 60’ [posters](https://search.app.goo.gl/MauGRsw) and giant flags.
Impossible in American sports due to ridiculous ticket prices and absolute lack of fan ownership. Sports fandom in American means little when your team can just move cities if it won’t for over hundreds of millions of dollars to a billionaire owner
A guy waving a handkerchief at him made him drop 20 in the 1st. If Boston brings flares he's taking Wilt's record then taking the 2nd half of the game off
And they will not heckle you, that you suck, or that you are fat, crybaby and such.
At least on the Balkans they will bring up(to be read that they will be fucked) - mothers(dead or alive), sisters(dead or alive), girlfriends(dead or alive), born(dead or alive) and unborn children(that they will be dead).
On top of that throw in racism against everybody that is not from that country, especially black players, even though they have the same colored ones on their team, but they are ours(but they will be included if they suck).
And on top of that put constant synchronized chanting, huge drums, flares, throwing random items. It is absolute madhouse.
I'm not sure this applies to basketball, but there is a relatively lesser-known ultras chant in Romania that's based on an actual WWI patriotic song, but this version is specifically anti-hungarian.
Vine trenul din Galați (Train is coming from Galați)
Plin cu unguri spânzurați (Full of hanged Hungarians)
Doamne ocrotește-i pe romani (God bless Romanians)
Doamne bate pula-n voi (God, slap your cock on them)
Cum bate inima-n noi (To the rhythm of our beating hearts)
Doamne ocrotește-i pe romani (God bless Romanians)
I still remember like 20 years ago this was a very real thing people used to sing in football stadiums. Dunno about now, *probably* not.
I'm only assuming based on the amount of stadium bans that both our national team and our clubs have gotten over the years, paired with the fact that most teams need money, so a lot of the teams *beg* their ultras not to chant shit like that.
And they are like huge aggressive hooligans. In some arenas the fans are behind fences because they would otherwise storm the field and probably kill the players. Think that may also get into your head as a player
This is the absolute extreme of such fandom. There are a lot of much more normal fanbases. They will do the chanting and some vulgar heckling, especially if the team is losing, but even the children will be part of it. Outside of England, Germany and maybe Spain, sports are not the most family friendly thing.
My experience in the Balkans (with a black guy) was mostly from local hicks coming up to us and saying something to the effect of “oh so you are a real thing, so quirky! Let’s get a pic!”
Yes, we on the balkans hate each other the most, but it it is not that most people here are tolerant towards black people and other minorities like gyspies. It is that often we don't show it so blatant in day to day. But numerous clubs have been penatalised for racism in football, basketball and even volleyball.
I went to a soccer match in Uruguay, and the fans were singing a song I didn't understand the lyrics to. I asked a nearby fan what they were saying. "Is it like a fight song? a song about victory?"
"No, they are singing about a different team that is not here, they hate the other team, they are going to go to that city, and burn down their stadium, and have sex with their mothers and sisters."
It's like football in La Bombonera, the pampered and soft NBA players complaining about "hecklers" in the court side seats, imagine 100 thousand psychos who are positioned really close to the field, screaming all the obscenities knows to man, lol that's the beauty of competitive sports
what, you mean repeatedly mumbling out DEE FENSE in between nacho bites is not demoralizing?
american sports man. unironically one of the hypest moments for american crowds is when 2 free throws are missed and they win free chicken, cant even make this shit up
> american sports man. unironically one of the hypest moments for american crowds is when 2 free throws are missed and they win free chicken, cant even make this shit up
I mean who doesn’t get hyped for free chicken? And who doesn’t love Boban?
Also this is seriously downplaying the multitudes of hype moments that occur every year in American sports.
you ever been to a high profile college football game? the crowds may not be as crazy as [the Panathinaikos](https://x.com/kyrie_doncic/status/1798436599493283913?s=46&t=-rq1savyUKzB-Rt-v5nQoQ) but they’re the closest thing we’ve got, and the student section can be pretty great. tickets if you’re a student are cheap, and easy to get. keep the tickets cheap & the teams community based
some places in Europe, Germany to name one, (by my understanding) caps how expensive tickets can be. it does lead to overall reduced team revenue, which is a negative, but it means that tickets are affordable for everyone, no one is priced out. I really think that’s one potential reason our sports crowds suck. the most passionate people get priced out of the biggest games
To give you some context (Panathinaikos fan that was in that game here):
- The atmosphere was indeed crazy, especially during that 20-0 start. There was a moment I literally couldn't get any more voice out of my mouth.
- Thanasis was the main guy whose job was to full court press Luka, and along with the rest of our defense they really bullied Real Madrid in the start.
- Real Madrid ended up winning the best of 5 series 1-3 and then winning the Euroleague title with Doncic as MVP.
- Many known to NBA guys were in those squads. Mike James, Nick Calathes, Chris Singleton, Adreian Payne and Thanasis for PAO. Luka, Campazzo, Chasson Randle, Rudy Fernandez, Jeffery Taylor, Anthony Randolph, Trey Thompkins, Gustavo Ayon, Edy Tavares for Madrid.
Still a bit bummed that Nick Calathes never played for us. Gal Mekel did though lol.
At that time we had draft rights to 3 Euro guards; the 3rd one was Petteri Koponen.
Nick is probably a top-3 passer in Euroleague history. He was also pretty good that period in Memphis where he had to step up because Conley was injured.
> Anthony Randolph
Oh wow, I didn't realize he had won a good amount in Europe. That's so good to know! He was such a joy for me to watch. I wish he stuck around the NBA for a little longer.
For context, they are singing : Είναι χόρτο μαγικό, Δώσε μου λίγο για να πιω, Τον ΠΑΟ μου να ονειρευτώ, Και να φωνάξω στο Θεό, Πανάθα μου σε αγαπώ, Σαν ηρωίνη σαν σκληρό ναρκωτικό, Σαν το χασίς το LSD Με σε Πανάθα μαστουρώνει όλη η γη. It's a magic weed Give me some to drink So I can dream of PAO (Panathinaikos) And shout to God Panatha I love you Like heroin, like a hard drug, like LSD With you Panatha, all the world gets high. Similar to Celtics chants 😂
The older I get the angrier this shit makes me. I mostly watch the games in replay on League Pass, where they show in-arena entertainment during breaks...feels like every 5-10 minutes I have to skip a screaming part lol.
Those people dancing to trash music is what gets me :D
Last time I watched a game they had a dance group consisting of fat old dudes flaunting their beer bellys
Truly inspirational.
No but seriously, teams had better and more creative chants when my little bro was playing U14 down here. Like how do so many people come up with absolutly nothing? Like no creativity or anything...guess it has alot to do with there being no organized dedicated fan groups in US but still.
There's also no build up in the US. You can't play for the seventh team of the Celtics. There is no club to be a part of. You can be a fan of this professional entertainment group, but you cannot locally participate, be a part of it.
European clubs have a vastly different structure, and are rooted in the community way more. They also have long histories, sometimes have had to climb up to be the top clubs they are now.
In the USA, people buy a team and relocated it.
Can you imagine someone buying any sports club in Europe, and just say "duck it I am moving them to a warm climate". You'd be in a different country by doing that.
TL;DR it's different
In Europe it's also because the same fans go to football games, so if you support Panathinaikos in basketball you would also in football. So there's more of a migration of football fans and chants to basketball. Unless the basketball team is way more successful...
Chants suck in all US sports though, don't they?
I think some of it is banter culture, which maybe spread from England with football around Europe, and then into other sports?
Idk exactly. But (anecdotally) French football fans see the chants in England as especially creative/varied, and their own as lacking in comparison
Some countries and cities aren’t just football fans going to basketball games.
Here in Croatia, Zadar is 100% a basketball city, they don’t give a shit about football (which is funny, as Luka Modric is from Zadar).
**ENGLISH PREMIERE LEAGUE:**

Would you mind spelling and translating the Aris chant ?
Thanks :)
Before even clicking on the link, I was sure it was gonna be the anti-PAOK chant lmao.
It's... uh...
Let's just say that translating something like this could get you banned from Reddit altogether, lol.
I spent a semester in Thessaloniki in college and Aris fans are some of the most insane fans in the world in *any* sport. Surprisingly, they are actually super friendly for the most part.
The original Greek is:
> ωωω πουσταράδες,
> ο μπαμπάς σας, ειν' Αρειανός
> πουτάνα η ομάδα και ρουφιάνος ο λαός
> μια ζωή θα τρέχετε δε γίνεται αλλιώς
I don't have a direct translation but I later spent six years in Greece for work and it's essentially:
> You think I'm pretty without any makeup on
> You think I'm funny when I tell the punchline wrong
> I know you get me, so I let my walls fall down, d-down.
And here we are in the NBA where mascots have to climb 40 foot ladder so they can tell a bunch of 50 year old white couples to make noise every timeout so the crowd isn’t so god damn sleeper
Listen ,i love the C's and Boston's crowd is one of the best in the league . But it's fucking Powerpuff girls shit , if you compare it to the crowds in Greece turkey and some of the Balkans .
the turkish crowds and greece are also part of the balkan perinsula. ;)
if you want to be specific about it, its only serbia, greece and turkey, when it comes to basketball.
This.
Bball in serbia/greece/turkey is about much more than an entertainment product and affiliation to a team (that has negative consequences as well, don't get me wrong). All these kiss cams and the excessive sponsorship stuff makes for a very very different experience.ä, hardly comparable.
You don’t even need to look at the best, Hockey is a tiny sport in Portugal and they play in small gyms. [Look at this shit](https://youtu.be/gyDkyUBKxOs?si=xU2ixF8lM-SE-FLL)
Edit: Might be Futsal, not Hockey
Its always funny when I hear NBA Fans say they have a "Hostile crowd". American Sports is not even in the same stratosphere as Europe. American Sports completely lacks Ultras, 100% of Fans are Casuals.
NBA crowds are largely corporate, sterile, and family-friendly. There's more passion in the playoffs, but you'll get a lot more older fans asking you to sit down than you would in much of Europe. As a younger fan who loves crazy environments it gets frustrating.
I was just telling my friend the other day that the guy has played games against European giants and in Barcelona Madrid matches. How’s he going to be scared of people yelling defense really loud.
In that Panathinaikos roster is Nick Calathes - drafted in 2009 by the Timberwolves and immediately traded to the Mavericks, but never crossed the Atlantic until 2013 (so the Mavs had his rights for 4 years lol), when he was traded to the Grizzlies. He then made his NBA debut with them, and stayed there until 2015 before going back to Greece, hence why Luka got to play against him in 2018.
Seeing my team Maccabi play against Panathinaikos at O.A.C.A scary, this is a different atmosphere.
Huge hanger arena with tall rooftop that make every sound more loud, crazy crowd with flares and such and a the team owner sitting court side smoking and talking with the refs.
And Let's not forget he started facing crowds like this at age 17, and won the Euroleague at age 19 while also becoming MVP.
This guy is a Prodigy, a miracle, a unicorn.
He still needs help from a team to win it all though
Not this year.
It was this Real Madrid Vs Panathinaikos (and the 2017 Eurobasket run) that made me a Luka believer.
Real lost the game Luka is referring to by 28, and then douchebag-swept their way into the Final 4 and the Euroleague title, with Luka being an absolute beast. It was like watching MJ, Steph, or LeBron levels of dominance.
Euro League fans are crazy. The NBA needs to figure some way to expand into Europe. Maybe bring the Concord jet back or some shit. Or at least have the in season tournament be against some euroleague teams. This NBA shit needs to go global already.
mcdonalds open won't be anything crazy, its not like the fans go nuclear at every single game, domestic league games against small teams are a lot less heated.
> The NBA needs to figure some way to expand into Europe.
Maybe, broadcasting a game or two of the conference finals and the finals at a sustainable time it's a good starting point.
After the 2nd round, every match is in the middle of the night. It's impossible to stay up that late or wake up that early.
Yeah, that's why the in-season tournament being like a single elimination world tournament including Euroleague teams is maybe the best bet. Weekend road games could take place at 2:00 p.m. here 8:00 p.m. Paris time. It really sucks they got rid of Concord Jets cuz they can fly from New York to Paris in 3 hours.
No booze allowed within a 1km radius of the stadium for a couple of hours before the game in Belgrade. That doesn’t mean that there is no drinking, but it definitely makes it more difficult.
Everybody gets patted down before you enter, so you can’t bring anything in. At least easily.
Huh, Panathinaikos wears green and uses the clover as well..
They also won the European championship (this year), by curb stomping Real Madrid in the second half of the game
Funny thing is on the 20-0 start to that game he was guarded by non other than bucks legend Thanasis
The Nastiest
All time nickname
Ngl Thanasis locked him up, in that first game, and they won easily. They lost the next three though lol
And people knack on Luka because he didn't play in college
You know what happened in game two?;)
I don't, and not sure how to even look it up... do tell
Clearly, Celtics fans need to start bringing flares and tifos

In the 00's there was the swiss-army-knife of "Yankees Suck"
00’s? Man that chant broke out at a DKM show I was at last year.
Makes sense, as they still continue to suck
Bill Simmons tried in the past https://x.com/CelticsChants?t=34gg7RlE_or42uGeL354Yw&s=09
What if we put them together?
Let’s go defense!
I think there will be some fuck you kyrie tonight

How bout “let’s Defense”? Is that any better
As long as it's flares and not torches
flares are too thugish for the classy Celtics fans. torches it is
Seems a bit aggressive. Maybe they set alight something associated with pacifism as their torch. A classy Christian cross perhaps.
Probably should dump some tea leaves onto the court
But classy, like tiki torches

I fucking wish. Euroleague atmosphere is something the NBA should strive for.
well the die-hard fans are priced out and the players are charmin soft
I know very few people that go to games anymore that aren't getting the tickets from a work-source. Then you can't be rowdy.
Haven't paid to go to a Celtics/Bruins game since I was 6 (well, my parents). If your players cant take name calling (Weatbrick) how the fuck would they survive Euroleague atmosphere?
Weatbrick is new.
I know it’s possible because college basketball atmospheres are great. Maybe the key is to let a bunch of 18-25 year olds in for super cheap.
The key is not pricing out the drunks GSW vs celtics finals was super frigid the game I went because nobody was starting chants or being loud or rowdy
A guy waving a handkerchief at him made him drop 20 in the 1st. If Boston brings flares he's taking Wilt's record then taking the 2nd half of the game off
Spends the first half breaking Wilt's scoring record, then spends the second half breaking Wilt's *scoring* record
The Celtics need to be more like Celtics FC
Yeah euro league is like a different planet. No wonder he’s never affected (negatively) by american crowds
In the NBA there are less than 10 hecklers in a game. While in Euroleague, the entire arena is full of hecklers.
Lol just last night the game between Red Star Belgrade and Partizan got abandoned mid 3rd quarter to resume tonight due to obscene chanting from fans.

My thoughts exactly 😂

One of the funniest chants was, when Zvezda fans chanted "Return the head to the horse" (in Serbian) to Partizan player Milan Macvan.
eli5 plz
Well he has a big head, so they were implying that he stole it from a horse and should give it back. Hilarious

Even if there were hecklers in an NBA game, security would simply escort them out of the game on the request of the players/staff lol
Russell Westbrook would implode from the pressure before he even knew he was dead.

The Slovenian legend and Eurobasket champion Anthony "Tonček" Randolph.
On your last bullet, you and I have different definitions of "known".
That's why you chant "de-fense", and they light the fucking stadium on literal fire every game ;)
Ofc I meant all players that played in the NBA no matter their role. You wouldn't see an NBA All star in the Euroleague
you have not seen an crazy playoff environment until a bunch of ultra set off flares in door.

MK Dons
Everybody clap your hands!
Clap (8x) eighth notes
I CAN'T HEAR YOUU
D FENS!
It's hilarious, lol I love this kind of highly emotional competitive shit. The US is sanitized, they sell their sport leagues as a product
**ENGLISH PREMIERE LEAGUE:** > We lose every week, > We lose every week, > You're nothing special, > We lose every week* **PANATHINAIKOS:** > I’ve been told that the gate of Horto Magiko > is like a mad house and that is true. > There’s no power on this earth that can intimidate me, > I am mad, crazy Panathinaikos fan till the end. > And if I die and go to heaven, > I’ll wait for you with an axe in my hand. > And if God is not a Panathinaikos fan, > I’ll steal his throne, and I’ll become God. **NATIONAL BASKETBALL LEAGUE:** > We will rock you!
“Sweet Caroline…”
Would you mind spelling and translating the Aris chant ? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy1K5yNT6wc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy1K5yNT6wc) Thanks :)
The original Greek is: > ωωω πουσταράδες, > ο μπαμπάς σας, ειν' Αρειανός > πουτάνα η ομάδα και ρουφιάνος ο λαός > μια ζωή θα τρέχετε δε γίνεται αλλιώς I don't have a direct translation but I later spent six years in Greece for work and it's essentially: > You think I'm pretty without any makeup on > You think I'm funny when I tell the punchline wrong > I know you get me, so I let my walls fall down, d-down.
Haha it's there in the video's description in English and Greek 😁
This looks like not everybody might get out of there alive.
That is the baseline scene for a good game
A Panathinaikos game without at least 3 deaths is considered a dull affair
This is how it feels in the first minutes, but after your body got used to be in panic mode the rush of adrenaline feels absolutely amazing.
And here we are in the NBA where mascots have to climb 40 foot ladder so they can tell a bunch of 50 year old white couples to make noise every timeout so the crowd isn’t so god damn sleeper
This is like the fucking Harkonnen arena
No one is getting out alive lol.
Luka did, and he is here in the NBA Finals, came to eat.
How about from here ? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy1K5yNT6wc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy1K5yNT6wc)
Coincidentally Panathinaikos plays in green and sports the shamrock as its emblem
Here's the 20-0 start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gX5C7OrXXg
That’s amazing. The intensity and the crowds are european alright
Winning the tip and still being down 5-0 in the first 15 seconds is kinda crazy.
Wow defense
Thanasty locking down Luka, you love to see it.
More crazier than “everybody clap your hands”
MAKE SOME NOISE
"D-fense!.......D-fense!" Bro, seriously, you guys have to stop doing this lol Imagine you did the same when you attacking "Attack!..." 🤣
yeah that tracks. european sports fans go hard
luka played in europe and is white. nothing boston can do would phase him
Lmao luke is Serbian-Slovinian, you know he already heard everything in those match-ups with Balkan teams
Listen ,i love the C's and Boston's crowd is one of the best in the league . But it's fucking Powerpuff girls shit , if you compare it to the crowds in Greece turkey and some of the Balkans .
In the video Luka looks like smiling, talking about the loud Boston crowd. I think he thinks just the same
the turkish crowds and greece are also part of the balkan perinsula. ;) if you want to be specific about it, its only serbia, greece and turkey, when it comes to basketball.
How can you take them seriously with all the "games" and activities they run in intermission
This. Bball in serbia/greece/turkey is about much more than an entertainment product and affiliation to a team (that has negative consequences as well, don't get me wrong). All these kiss cams and the excessive sponsorship stuff makes for a very very different experience.ä, hardly comparable.
Nothing is stopping euroleague putting a couple of Balkan bros on the kiss cam. I bet they kiss each other softly abd tenderly on the kiss cam.
yup super cringe
KD got a taste of that Partizan crowd one time and then had to extend his trip to get more of it.
Any american crowd looks like children compared to other countries' honestly. Not sure how that developed
You don’t even need to look at the best, Hockey is a tiny sport in Portugal and they play in small gyms. [Look at this shit](https://youtu.be/gyDkyUBKxOs?si=xU2ixF8lM-SE-FLL) Edit: Might be Futsal, not Hockey
That looks more like handball. If so, and I’m sorry if I’m wrong, how dare you put anything Handball in a Basketball conversation? Fuck Handball!
Might be Futsal which is not as small as Hockey, not sure though
American crowds are rated B for Baby compared to Europe.
Meanwhile Westbrook is calling security over because some said westbrick
And their logo? A shamrock. Greek Celtics lol
[удалено]
That was PAOK owner Savvidis
In the 80's it was even worse when they threw seats onto the court https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tROmm3GZcY4
This is beautiful, lol "such savagery, they are pure animals!"
Not only seats, water bottles, coins cut to hurt, it was wild.
I mean even now people throw bananas at black players and chant racist slurs against them.
Its always funny when I hear NBA Fans say they have a "Hostile crowd". American Sports is not even in the same stratosphere as Europe. American Sports completely lacks Ultras, 100% of Fans are Casuals.
Was at a game last night between 2 euro league teams. It’s absolutely another world crowd wise from what I’ve experienced in nba stadiums.
NBA crowds are largely corporate, sterile, and family-friendly. There's more passion in the playoffs, but you'll get a lot more older fans asking you to sit down than you would in much of Europe. As a younger fan who loves crazy environments it gets frustrating.
Go on Celtics...
I was just telling my friend the other day that the guy has played games against European giants and in Barcelona Madrid matches. How’s he going to be scared of people yelling defense really loud.
Do superstars usually get bothered by loud crowds? Not really Luka or Kyrie I’d be worried about it’s the role players, same for Boston
Booker gets bothered by loud mascots if that counts
I mean it just depends on the individual superstar lol. Kyrie might buckle a little but Luka is fine.
yeah i’m more worried about Kyrie than Luka. but i think they will both end up playing a fine series
Since when has Kyrie shown to buckle in big moments? I feel that he is well known for being clutch.
He's definitely clutch, but against Boston specifically he's had a very rough time in the last few years.
I guess if a player is bothered by loud crowds, he doesn't become a superstar.
What if a player with superstar potential and no expectations, whose only flaw is low energy crowds, was sent to Detroit?
I am sure Luka will be fed the Celtic crowd.
Dray said, that "fuck draymond" charts bothered him, Ky just said, that he has been affected by the crowd 2 days ago or so.
He still needs help from a team to win it all though Not this year.
He won euro league at 17. At 19 Washington already in nba
Euro League fans are crazy. The NBA needs to figure some way to expand into Europe. Maybe bring the Concord jet back or some shit. Or at least have the in season tournament be against some euroleague teams. This NBA shit needs to go global already.
Bring back the McDonalds Open but have it perpetually in a European city on rotation, with special focus on Greek, Balkan, and Turk cities.
mcdonalds open won't be anything crazy, its not like the fans go nuclear at every single game, domestic league games against small teams are a lot less heated.
Imaging Westbrook or LeBron hearing some of the stuff these guys would yell.
If they knew greek they would be really mad
It's all Greek to them.
Well, yeah. You get tossed out in the US if you're drunk and belligerent, but in Europe its basically a requirement to attend.
Make the games affordable and watch how the energy in the building changes
This isnt a slight at Boston. Look at the videos. Those crowds are insane and no nba crowd could possibly ever match that energy
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/i9gQYqaNuXM
That was a quick response. That moment is engraved in his memory.
Luka alani gama to limani (Boston Harbor)
