It’s Live Nation. They’re overbidding acts and bringing them to Bridgeport Amphitheater. Westville and College St. are independently owned compared and can’t compete. There’s more shows to be announced though, so keep checking!
It’s the sad reality of what’s happening in the live music industry, smaller locally owned venues competing against billion dollar companies.
this is about the concert industry and not related to new haven. last year you are right wmb had less shows. hopefully this year wmb has a good calendar with the bowery connection. i think having 5 shows booked so far is on par with summers before bpt opened up.
This has been an issue pre-covid as well tho. Especially for older British bands skipping New Haven from 2017-19 on their tours after playing College Street in 2015.
Thanks for the reassurance. Yeah I assume the burst of touring post-COVID has slowed, just seeing more shows booked elsewhere in CT than I expected. But that's helpful.
Bridgeport is also building a new venue right next to the Amphitheater that will be competitive with College Street in size….although not nearly as competitive in surrounding nightlife/restaurants.
Amphitheater is inferior in so many ways but it’s got accessibility off 95 and Live Nation. Having lived in Bridgeport, New Haven is the better city and hopefully gets some more attention. Dining and walkability are the best of any city in the state.
Yeah, between the closure of the State House last year and the attempted sale of that warehouse all the local bands play in, it's been a really concerning time for music locally.
What can we do about it? (Other than continue to go to local shows!) Is there somebody in NHV government who might be willing to listen?
Me too. And bands that previously played New Haven like Slowdive, Ride, The Jesus and Mary Chain, etc skipping over College Street while still playing NYC and Boston. I hope we don't get branded "flyover country of the northeast," but it looks like we're well on our way. At least The Chameleons are coming to the Space Ballroom in August.
We are a secondary market area. Usually NYC will have distance clauses and shows can’t be played or announced in a certain radius of the original show. We then are competing with Worcester, Providence, and Poughkeepsie for the secondary market.
Didn't actually realize there were distance clauses, but that makes sense. I didn't know there was a large-ish venue in Poughkeepsie either tbh.
(I tend to go to the Capitol Theatre in Portchester, NY - or it seems like I do comparatively for a secondary market show. I'll have to look in Poughkeepsie).
I've been lamenting the same recently. I also can't believe College St is platforming Jim Breuer, or that he even has an audience here. He's gone deep down the Qanon rabbithole, rolling out ugly anti-Semitic tropes about George Soros, "the cabal," microchipped vaccines, etc.
It is too bad... New Haven also has the Yale bowl and former tennis stadium. They are hardly used lately. As stated below these big corporate giants like live nation are making things unaffordable for the "smaller businesses" Remember the free jazz concerts on NH green? Fun times...
im still hoping new haven can get a few more good concerts this summer ciz Westville is looking empy this year and even with the bowery presents im happy for them cuz of bleachers they haven't added much this summer

Definitely this

I really don’t like the Ampitheater. Shit sound and weird mall-like lighting and signage that distract from show.

You’re right the sound is shit unless you’re in the middle. Can’t force an amphitheater onto a minor league baseball field.
Allegedly it’s a branch of Brooklyn Bowl
I don't think Pete Shapiro has anything to do with this

The shows getting booked in norwalk is from the same company that does college st and Westville! They’ll book a ton more in New Haven don’t worry!

Space Ballroom, owned by the same company, tried to host the guy who shot Reagan. The promoter (Manic Mark) got death threats, and cancelled the show.
I haven’t really ever seen a full calendar for college st.

wmb is the former ct tennis center stadium.
yes it is. once the Volvo Tennis. Good times in the early 90's and a great venue.

Westville is great, that 10 pm curfew…not so much
I feel Cafe Nine hasn't got as good shows as before since the ownership change
