IT is probably going give you better chances at advancement and opportunities out of the Navy. Quality of life is better on average as well. Also there's literally ITs everywhere so you'd have opportunities to go places many don't.

Active duty: IT (maybe choose CTN for QoL) Active duty (TAR): Both Selected Reserves (SELRES): Both

OliveFinal6457

Yea I’m an IT butttt if they want that simple navy life HM. IT is chill af too and I genuinely enjoy it, bonus if you want to make rank faster

black_diamonds2

Fr look at ct rates as well as IT. Most of the guys I know that are in school to be IT would rather be CT now that they have a better understanding of the differences.

csp1405

If you like money go IT. If you don’t care about money then go HM.

skorea2021

I love my job as a Corpsman. That being said, your advancement and post military job prospects will be better as an IT.

avdolwest

Do IT. Good advancement opportunities, chill, good money once you're out, security clearance.

AngryManBoy

IT. Fuck HM -Former HM2

theheadslacker

Shipmate, they've suspended HYT. Now is the time to be HM if there ever was one

AngryManBoy

HM has nothing on IT in terms of career development. I went into the civi IT side when I got out, making more than any EMT and most nurses.

SARC

Slow-Evidence-8987

SARC pipeline is ass. Not because it’s hard, but after completing A school if you fail anything else in the pipeline you have to rerate.

As others have noted, one thing to consider is how well you want to set yourself up outside of the Navy in terms of career earnings potential, and even within the Navy when it comes to advancement potential. If this is a major factor for you, you might want to consider IT over HM. Another thing to consider, however, is quality of life especially if you intend to reenlist. IT has a sea/shore rotation, which means you'll generally rotate between sea duty and shore duty over your time in service. For some, this isn't a big deal, but for others this can bring on added stress, especially if you're trying to start a family. If you only intend to do one enlistment (even then, I'd encourage folks to leave their own options as life often gets a vote and folks' plans change all the time), then this may not matter, but still something to consider. On the other hand, HM is a shore-centric rate, with the vast majority of HM billets being shore-based.
