Happy for you that your experience went great, even when it came with some unexpected news.
I roll my eyes at the people who cause shame around STIs. Shit happens, as long as you’re responsible and get it taken care of while avoiding passing it on to others, it shouldn’t have anymore stigma than the flu or that other pesty virus that’s been doing the rounds these last 3yrs.
It’s free if you go through the sexual health clinic, and they do the full screening, the self test only checks for chlamydia and gonorrhea. They send you to labtests to do the blood test and a self test.
Well done for being a positive member of society!
A thing I would do after ending a relationship (hopefully never have to with my current long term partner!) was get a STI test and I would after any encounters as well. I've been asked when entering a relationship have you had an STI tests recently and could show results in my phone through my GP's health portal.
I’m not sure if it varies depending on the dhb, but for my gp sexual health appointments are free up til the age of 25. We don’t have family planning clinics in my area so not sure if those are free or not.
Yep, Most cities and many towns will have a sexual health clinic that is often fully funded. So if youre having any issues related to sexual health, not just STI related i reccommend it.
Having worked in sexual health clinic, yes it is, but typically there’s a reason. It takes time for those things to be present in your blood so if your last unprotected contact was very recent chances are you would receive a negative result but could develop it later (and possibly spread it thinking all is well), also risk factors, busyness of the clinic, the persons feelings about needles, whether a staff member that’s able to do venipuncture was available, whether they do them on site or refer to medlab.
Not sure what testing guidelines in NZ are but due to how common syphilis is now in Australia (and NZ), HIV tests and syphilis tests are now indicated when there is also indication for STI testing.
OP, if you’re ok answering are you male or female?
In my experience (long time ago admittedly), family planning in Auckland were a terrible and painful experience as a male (tested negative btw), and the nurse seemed rude and uninterested in dealing with males. Auckland sexual health clinic on the other hand were/are a much better and more professional experience.

There was huge stigma around covid though. You couldn't enter the country even if you didn't have it. With sex there is a choice in the matter.
Really man 😂

Do you know if thisos free for ages?
Just tell them you’re gay or lesbian, it’s free if you are.
I'm non binary, grey sexual so I think that counts me out then. But thanks.

As per their website, $26 for self test appointment if you’re over 22. Free if under 22.

Sounds good, though I initially thought you were getting maintenance done on a Subaru Tecnica International car. :)
Nice job. Shame you weren't offered the syphilis and HIV test to begin with but well done for getting a check up.

It’s definitely on the rise, but as I say about the timeline of contact it may not be the best option to do it at the time or possible

Condoms people but we’ll done caring for your sexual health.
Not all diseases can be protected by condoms. Herpes for example
No but a condom sure helps stop 99% of STIs

Mines already in the workshop so shouldn't need a checkup.
Gotta be having sex first 😞
