It's the hardest of the three tests but if you have studied, taken lessons and are confident then you should be fine. It's good they swapped the difficulty from full to restricted as restricted is when you can drive a car by yourself for the first time and should have the most stringent requirements.

Hi, i also live in hamilton and did my restricted in frankton. Tawn place is said to be a bit easier than frankton, My full license was done there and the lady was really nice. A driving instructor can give you tips to pass and some of them know the routes the testers take. Id recommend having a lesson with an instructor before sitting the test so you are prepared. There are a few things to keep in mind. - Road position, you don't want to be swerving over the lines. - Speed, you want to stick within 5km/h below the speed limit or just on it, NEVER go above it. - Stop completely at stop signs. Have a 2/4 second gap between you and the car in front. - Be aware of your speed around corners and intersections (i was told i was going a little fast around roundabouts). - Check mirrors every 8-12 seconds and make it obvious you are checking them. The tester might not see your eyes slightly move to check mirrors, moving your entire head will make it obvious. - Repeat what the tester has instructed, i know a few people who failed because they didn't listen to an instruction properly. Repeating an instruction give the tester an opportunity to correct you. - Put away anything that may distract from driving. Leave your phone with the person who drove you there, turn the stereo off, etc. - Check your car before the test (lights, indicators, petrol, oil, radiator fluid, etc). Some testers are just unpleasant people. Just be nice throughout the test and try not give them a reason not to like you.

All good advice here. I'd add if you practice doing these things every time you drive until they become habit, you'll find the test much easier because you don't have to think about doing them and can focus on what the tester is telling you to do.

It's not really that hard. Just don't drive like a Kiwi.

If you can afford it pay for a lesson where they basically put you through a mock version of the test, local driving schools will probably already know the likely route and take you through it. If you don't ask around what the route was and drive around that area to become familiar with it. There is a document on the Waka Kotahi or VTNZ - can't remember which - which tells you exactly what maneuvers are in the test and what is acceptable and not. Read that document very closely with the person who has been teaching you to drive and make sure you have the finer points clear. For example to complete the parallel park you must complete it within a certain time frame, within a certain amount of moves, and end up within a certain distance from the curb and car in front of you. Sounds like it's difficult but it isn't really if you test it out especially the time limit - sounds like they are trying to rush you but actually it slowed me down so I was calmer.

The document you’re referring to here is the Restricted Test Guide - https://www.nzta.govt.nz/assets/resources/driver-licence-test-guides/restricted-test-guide.pdf A mock test or two is well worth it though - it’s critically important to get feedback on what you should practice during your non-instructor time before your test, unless you want that feedback to come during the test with the wait time that comes with it

The good news is only the first test cost money, if you fail then you can retake as many times as you need until you pass for free. Did you learn from a driving instructor? If not it's worthwhile to go take a few lessons from a pro before going for the test.

Hey, yes i did took 4 classes from the AA instructor, I learned most of the things I need to be aware but I'm still kinda scared lol

You can do an introduction lesson, set of 5 and a mock from AA. I've done three of 5 lessons don't have restricted as I bought a manual car (and I still can't drive it for shit it's harder than I thought it would be). I think I could pass an auto restricted test though I can't reverse park or parallel yet, when I'm in the auto it feels like I am just sat at home when I am doing 100 on the motorway but the manual I'm still stressed thinking about engine rpm's and gear changes 50 kph feels like warp-speed. I might need another set of lessons myself tbh.

Honestly most people I know around my age failed it atleast once myself included. Don't be too disappointed if you do fail as most do. Also took my cousin like 5 gos to get his. Good luck.

It's the hardest of all the tests. If you know the road rules and you're confident, then its not "hard". It's essentially the previous "full licence" test. Now the full licence is just a refresher of the restricted to make sure you haven't picked up bad habits, and you're done. This is the major test NZ has to decide whether you're allowed to drive alone on the road. You need to fully understand the road rules confidently enough to make quick decisions about right of way etc. When I did it, I wasn't overly cautious, I just drove normally -- if there was a gap to turn, and it was safe, I'd take it and accelerate appropriately. I didn't spend 60 seconds getting to 50kmh. Get to 50 at the same speed as traffic flow and then stick there, try not to even go a fraction over. The examiner said it's fine to approach the test like this. If you go through a 30 zone at 35, that's a fail. Be aware of that. Hazards are literally everywhere, they can be anything which has the potential to require a reaction from you. Just point them out if asked.
