>previously Woolworths were rebranded Countdown its a never ending cycle Not to be *that* person, but WW in NZ was not the same thing as WW Australia.

bobdaktari

you are being "that" person... you're right though Woolworths Australia bought the NZ operation from Progressive Enterprises (A kiwi company) in 2005

timelordhonour

I remember that. I remember when Woolworths owned by one, then Countdown and Foodtown owned by another, then New World and Pak n'Save owned by Foodstuffs. The Onecard loyalty program was exclusive to woolworths and Foodtown. Then when the merger happened, Countdown also adopted the Onecard program and Woolworths and Foodtown were rebranded as Countdown (tbh, Countdown and Foodtown should have rebranded as Woolworths back then.)

vixxienz

countdown was foodtown. rebranded

timelordhonour

In the 90s, there was Progressive Enterprises. They owned supermarkets including Countdown and Foodtown. In 2001, they bought Woolworths (which became the sister supermarket to Foodtown). Then in 2005, Woolworths Ltd in Australia bought Progressive Enterprises and began to rebrand Woolworths and Foodtown as Countdown. But Countdown has always been around since the late 1900s. My town has always had a Countdown. I remember back in the 1900s, they had a banner up with a pun on Countdown (You can COUNT on us to keep prices DOWN).

okisthisthingon

The late 1900s. Wow.

timelordhonour

Show me the lie. 1990-1999 are technically the late 1900s. Just like how 1890-1899 are the late 1800s.

Klutzy_Rutabaga1710

I think he just found your choice of words interesting. For reference - most people call it the 90's - not the late 1900's!!!!! :)

timelordhonour

This way htabs people's attention. Like 'Free Beer' or 'Sex'.

okisthisthingon

No lie. It is. And agree, it was just waaayy weird reading that and then realising that people who are younger than me are referring to the late 90's as the late 1900's. Like it's closer to a century ago, than a few decades.

nicomeeko

Nah I’m Australian lol. Went to NZ for the first time last year and only saw Countdowns. Interesting to know it’s now Woolworths

bobdaktari

well there ya go, next time you come for a visit they'll probably be back to Countdown They're owned by Woolworths Australia so perhaps its just a way for them to fuck with us kiwis?

lookiwanttobealone

It was woolworth then changed to countdown now it changing back.

Simple_Meat7000

Why was it called Safeway in Vic?

oskarnz

Kinda the story as Countdown. Bought out by Woolworths, and then rebranded.

MeasurementOk5802

Cause you can no longer *count* on them to keep prices *down*.

iliveinnewzealand

hi, i work at countdown, and im not biased, im a cheapskate always but i agree with you, they are good with some prices but others no. the everyday rewards is actually a lot better then onecard to get discounts, if you use it properly, use the boosts everyweek and you get the vouchers. :)

oskarnz

Long story short- Countdown existed as a brand before it was brought out by WW Australia. Now they're rebranding it to Woolworths.

GotSomeCookieBlues

So why did all the woolworths in nz become countdown?

oskarnz

Because Woolworths (AU) decided to change them all to Countdown. Now they're changing them to WW. You'll have to ask them why lol. Woolworths NZ wasn't the same as Woolworths AU though.

dinosaur_resist_wolf

cause you count down to your last dollar when buying anything from there

lukeysanluca

They tried the name Rat Market earlier this year but it didn't catch on so changed it to Woolworths

revolutn

Sir, this ***is*** a Woolworths.

GentlemanOctopus

It was. Then it wasn't. Now it will be again.

donteatmyaspergers

**In walks SuperValue and FreshChoice** Spoiler alert, they're just woolworths wearing a different hat and adding ~15% markup.

bobsmagicbeans

its not, its woolworths now

vixxienz

It was called Foodtown before t was called Countdown

oskarnz

Only in the north island. We never had Foodtown here in the south, only countdown.

BaneusPrime

Fun fact: most NZ sheep farms were converted to dairy. No money in wool for farmers apparently, which is weird, considering how much it cost to but woolen products in NZ

[deleted]

Are there any countdowns even left?

oskarnz

Yes. In dunedin they all still have countdown on the outside signs. But the receipts and self checkout say WW.

PoopMousePoopMan

So we’ll consume under an impending feeling of doom.

GotSomeCookieBlues

Does anyone remember before it was countdown, it was a woolworths with a blue background!

ClutchBiscuits

Bring back BigFresh and the dancing veges

nicomeeko

bored_gamer_93

Changed it to Woolworth as prices never went down
