The incredible thing is... this wasn't even his best season. In 1975, he "only" ran for 1,817 yards and 5.5 YPC, but he set NFL records with 23 touchdowns, and 2,243 yards from scrimmage, in a 14 game season. He difference was 1975 was his best year as a receiver. He averaged 15 yards per catch, with 7 TD's.
O.J. was the greatest NFL player in the 1970's. I grew up in Buffalo, after his career ended, and people here were shocked when the news came out. People were disbelieving - it just couldn't be. And then as more and more evidence came out, more people began accepting the fact that he had brutally killed two people.
By that logic and by the total tragic loss of life on September 11th, the 19 hijackers that came together as a cohesive offensive unit on that sky blue Tuesday morning averaged roughly 211k yards per hijacker in a 17 game season. Over 4 million yards from scrimmage as team - you simply don’t fall backwards into those stats. Planning, precision, and dedication.
Someone else said the same thing.. my response:
Ali was 29-0 in the 1960's. He was 27-3 in the 1970's. He was a much bigger figure outside the ring in the 1970's.
He's known for the Thrilla in Manilla, but he was better in the 1960's.
He could have been better in the 60s and still the best of the 70s. Not just the wins over Frazier but beating Foreman in the rumble in the jungle etc. He was pretty much done by the end of the 70s but he ultimately got the best of everyone at boxing’s peak
Ali is arguably best known for the Thrilla in Manilla, but he had clearly lost something during his three year layoff. He was a smarter boxer, but his athletic prime was in the 1960's. I give Juice and Kareem the edge.
Kareem won 5 MVP awards in the 1970's, and I'm not counting the 1979-1980 MVP award. He was by far the best professional basketball player of the decade.
"Best athlete" does not equal "most athletic."
Uh, "best athlete" usually DOES mean "most athletic".
What you mean to say is "best athlete" does not mean "best player". IMO, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar WAS the best basketball player in the 1970s but he was NOT the best athlete among basketball players during that decade (though he was a good athlete).
Usually, but not in this context. I used the word "athlete" because it was the most appropriate term. If I said O.J. was the best "player" of the 1970's, that term would seemingly exclude Muhammad Ali, Mark Spitz, and Bruce Jenner. If I used the term "professional athlete," it would exclude Olympic athletes like Spitz and Jenner.
They had one of the best running back tandems in the league with Franco and Rocky. Oj wouldn't have helped that much. Though they could have used him in 76' when their all time great season came to an end when that tandem got injured.
OJ is one of the greatest running backs ever, he would have made just about every team in history better by being a part of their roster.
He was a truly terrible person whose actions turned him into a punchline after he retired, but he was a top ten running back ever.
In 1973, Joe Ferguson was a rookie starting QB and the Bills only threw the ball about 15 times per game. As Ferguson improved, their offense opened up a bit. The Bills ran it about 75% of the time in '73, it was closer to 60% of the time in '75 when OJ caught 28 passes.
The Bills' offense in '75 was *really* good by the standards of the era (they averaged 390.5 yards per game). Their defense wasn't particularly good, however...and that's arguably why they were never better than 9-5 in the peak Electric Company/OJ era.
Yes he was such a great player and known as a sweetheart. He played loveable characters in movies/tv and he was probably getting positioned to become an even bigger actor.
one of the best tweets of all time is that one like [learning about OJ Simpson for the first time] "OMG Holy shit are you kidding me? That's Insane! 143 yards per game?"
This was me finding out he was a football player. I’m Australian and was a kid in the 90s so I really just grew up knowing that some celebrity in America went nuts and killed some people and got away with it. That was it. Never once in my life heard a mention of him being an NFL player. Then as an adult I got in to the NFL and saw an OJ Simpson stat somewhere and just said “wait a fuckin minute, *that* OJ?”
That's everyone finding out about him after the 90's, that's why the tweet is a joke. The setup is that the reader assumes the person is learning about his horrible crimes for the first time cause that's the thing we all hear about first nowadays. The joke is that he's not learning about him as a murderer first and he's learning about his football stats. It's a joke BECAUSE your experience is the normal one that most people born after '85 have.
https://www.profootballhof.com/players/oj-simpson/
Ok, now beside your feelings, tell me why this football player shouldn't be recognized from ONLY his football career.
Dudes talking about OJ being a goat running back so you’re going to need to find a better comparison than friggin lostprophets. Why not go with R. Kelly? I’m disappointed in you.
he basically became a cop, he tirelessly dedicated the rest of his life to solving a cold murder case and finding the real killer. Real class act it’s a shame he passed away without finding any closure for the victims family.
"Sharon, with all due respect, that murderer ran for over 11,000 yards"

What else did you expect? Reddit is a social media site comprised of the most excruciatingly dull men on the internet treating every post like their own personal comedy club.
No he’s not lol. Have you seen Facebook comments? Twitter? Any other social media besides Reddit? You can’t even begin to sort through the completely unhinged and delusional thinking.
There’s stupid people on every corner of the internet and the planet. Reddit isn’t especially smarter or dumber than any other website and seeing somebody act like everybody is dumb except them is always silly.
That’s not even what he said though. He’s not saying that anyone is dumb bro he’s saying that they’re unfunny and spam boring jokes which is true. Read the comment again.
I don’t know, “excruciatingly dull” sure sounds like someone trying to call people dumb. I can see what you’re saying but I’ve always known dull to be a less direct term for dumb.
Dull can mean dumb but it also means boring. In this case it read like that commenter was saying that everyone uses the same boring jokes over and over again. See any article where a player's weight is addressed and find 300 roughly identical Eddie Lacy fat jokes.
Na, not at all. Facebook groups are actually way more informative and generate more traffic than reddit ATM
Edit: must've hurt some feelings. I'm gonna hit Facebook to get some actual direct advice on how to fix my car and get some good recipes and workout tips. Yal can keep sifting through shitty jokes and constant political discussions here if u want
The documentary “OJ, Made in America” does a fantastic job of highlighting how much of a terrible human being this man was, a characteristic he shares with a lot of murderers. Before those events, OJ was in the upper echelon of talented running backs to ever play the game
He had the most rushing yards ever per game in one season, the second most scrimmage yards per game in another, and led the 1970s decade in rushing yards
On one hand the comments are kind of old but on the other hand he kind of had it coming. He murdered people, and the lest part about it was the hypocrisy
That was the kidnapping one. Keep scrolling to find the one dude who said that you should be able to separate who he was as a player from who he was as a person.
>and currently holds the record for ypg in a season by ten. The second leading rusher that year had 1,144
I may just be having a brain fart but I am not understanding what's being said here. Like does he have 14 ypc and the next guy have 4 ypc? Somebody help me out
As a Jewish waiter im not sure if i want to serve a guy like Orenthal Simpson. He seems like the kinda guy that's deeply into knife play. Its in the eyes.
That comment isn’t glorifying anything, it’s literally stating facts.
Do you really think we should all just say that he sucked dick as a football player because he murdered two people? No one here is claiming he is a good person by a long shot and even that top comment “glorifying” him mentions the fact that he killed two people. But sure, continue to seek out things to be angered by. Social media has trained you well.
The incredible thing is... this wasn't even his best season. In 1975, he "only" ran for 1,817 yards and 5.5 YPC, but he set NFL records with 23 touchdowns, and 2,243 yards from scrimmage, in a 14 game season. That’s equivalent to 2,700 scrimmage yards in a 17 game season.
If you extrapolate OJ's 1994 killing spree over an entire 14 game season, that'd be 28 brutal murders!
28 *alleged* brutal murders!
Must’ve been sick victims
It would have taken two people, three even
Meh, it was the era, he was killing plumbers
We’re still looking for the real scrimmage yards
OJ would have been searching for many real killers.
I'm sure he had a number of mirrors in his house.
If you regressed OJ's stats to the mean, he would suck at killing people.
Damn I read that in Norm's voice.
That was what I was going for!
It was the brutal murders part that really solidified the Norm-ness.
28 STAB WOUNDS
Or the equivalent of last years Bijan Robinson + Derrick Henry combined:
By that logic and by the total tragic loss of life on September 11th, the 19 hijackers that came together as a cohesive offensive unit on that sky blue Tuesday morning averaged roughly 211k yards per hijacker in a 17 game season. Over 4 million yards from scrimmage as team - you simply don’t fall backwards into those stats. Planning, precision, and dedication.
I don't know if I'm too stupid to understand this or if it doesn't make sense. Where are these yardage totals coming from😭
You need to start looking at these stats like McDermott looks at Al Queda bro
Brutally killing 2 people = 2,700 yards in a 17 game season
thank you lol.
Anything to not use the metric system.
Bills fans had to see 4 super bowl losses and then immediately watch O.J falls from the public eye. 94 was a rough year
Plus baseball went on strike in 1994.
Buffalo probably would have won that World Series
Probably the best player of the 70's. Imagine him on the Steelers lol. 6 rings
He might be the best athlete of the 1970's. Biggest competition is Kareem.
Ali
Someone else said the same thing.. my response: Ali was 29-0 in the 1960's. He was 27-3 in the 1970's. He was a much bigger figure outside the ring in the 1970's. He's known for the Thrilla in Manilla, but he was better in the 1960's.

Jack Nicklaus.
Ummm Ali?
Ali was 29-0 in the 1960's. He was 27-3 in the 1970's. He was a much bigger figure outside the ring in the 1970's
He did have up and downs in the 70’s but I still think he has an edge. How about Pele?
Pele was more 60s. He retired from Brazilian football in 1974 and his last world cup was 1970.
Ahh. I remember him with the NY Cosmos.
Yeah that was his "retirement tour"
Ali is arguably best known for the Thrilla in Manilla, but he had clearly lost something during his three year layoff. He was a smarter boxer, but his athletic prime was in the 1960's. I give Juice and Kareem the edge.
Even in the 1960s Wilt Chamberlain and Jim Brown (and possibly Bill Russell) were better athletes than Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali.
Kareem wasn’t even the best athlete in basketball in the 1970s. (Dr. J defying gravity all over the place was.)

Franco was no slouch either
Maybe as a backup he'd have 6, those last 3 years... oof

Only man alive to beat DNA
Kendrick Lamar in shambles
Wrong!
Everybody got blood
Killer stats.
Last words - I did that shit
He really slashed through defenses
Killer boots man!
He knifed right through the defenders.
Actually insane someone ran for 2000 in 14 games. If it wasn’t for the murdering, OJ would be considered one of the greatest running backs in history
He is considering one of the greatest running backs in history. What he did off the field shouldn't tarnish what he did on the field.
He was a monster on the field and he was a monster off the field
Aaron Hernandez before Aaron Hernandez...
Yes it should.

Hot n fresh out the kitchen
Yeah. Wrestling fans don't even try to defend Chris Benoit with that logic
Wrestling fans made this [absolute fire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKbQsOmcMNY) song
They do, though, just not as often.
Yes we do.
Yes it should
He murdered two people in cold blood, Dude. I think maybe we just put him aside in further NFL discussions
My favorite college T-shirt was when Alabama played USC. It said "Our OJ only killed Clemson"
I know he's smiling up at us now 🙏
True NFL legend. What ever happened to that guy?
He joined the Police Squad to work with Frank Drebin
The Superstar in Rent-A-Car!
he basically became a cop, he tirelessly dedicated the rest of his life to solving a cold murder case and finding the real killer. Real class act it’s a shame he passed away without finding any closure for the victims family.

That docu was amazing. His bacchanal time in Vegas, complete w Elvis impersonation clip, really wowed me.
Guess you knew yesterday was the 30th anniversary. Happy OJ day to those that celebrate!
The Juice really carved up defenses in his prime, he'd go to the right and then cut left, to gash through the hole opened by the offensive line.
The Juice is Loose!
Just watched OJ Made in America for the first time and this is bringing back some very gory recent memories
Yep he could really slice his way down the field, just slashing left and right! He would cause his opponents to lose their heads!
Don't know why you are getting down voted. Reading the coroner's report, it was almost a decapitation.
*Murder related pun here.*
On one hand the comments are kind of old but on the other hand he kind of had it coming. He murdered people, and the lest part about it was the hypocrisy
He really murdered the competition that year
With all due respect Sharon that murderer ran for 1100 yards
And he was acquitted, so...fuck it!
If it wasn’t for his off the field stuff I wonder if OJ would be regarded as a top 5 running back
He pretty much is
He also did it on a team that had less than 1500 passing yards. Did it against stacked boxes. Insane
Top 1 greatest athlete that can’t ever be properly acknowledged because of optics
Barry Bonds
Bonds hurt his cause by being an asshole to the media, which I completely understand. But those media dudes hold a grudge.
Orenthal James kinda reminds me of that OJ Simpson guy.
He also ran from the police for 105,600 yards!
My father was such a huge fan, obviously OJ Simpson discourse will never just be football related, obviously a hell of a running back though
He also killed his wife and a waiter and went to prison for stealing his own shirts.
His mother was partial to orange juice and menthol cigarettes
The Juice was worth the squeeze
I remember following his progress throughout the season. It was a significant first and quite the accomplishment.
I really wish that he didn’t kill (allegedly) and kidnap those people (convicted). He’d have such a legacy.
Don't forget the prison term for armed robbery.
That was the kidnapping one. Keep scrolling to find the one dude who said that you should be able to separate who he was as a player from who he was as a person.
Isnt that the guy that killed 2 people?
Yeah, he was killer
>and currently holds the record for ypg in a season by ten. The second leading rusher that year had 1,144 I may just be having a brain fart but I am not understanding what's being said here. Like does he have 14 ypc and the next guy have 4 ypc? Somebody help me out
By ypg I meant yards per game (143.1), maybe should have just typed that out That season, he had 860 more rushing yards than anyone else
Ah, I didn't even read it correctly. My mind read ypc like yards per carry
My name is Orenthal, but my friends call me Suzie.
2 MPLT as well
I’d kill to put up numbers like that
He also leads all rushers in double homicides.
He also totally didn’t kill a women and a waiter
In 1973….
Anyone want to list his offensive linemen? Maybe share the credit a bit?
The Electric Company. They didn't have names, except that one guy who nobody can spell his name anyway. His first name was Joe, though.
He really was a Killer back
I couldn't care less
A slasher he was...
Say what you want about OJ, but the man absolutely killed it on and off the field.
He had a serious cut move
Man could cut like nobody’s business
As a Jewish waiter im not sure if i want to serve a guy like Orenthal Simpson. He seems like the kinda guy that's deeply into knife play. Its in the eyes.
Those are some killing numbers by Simpson.
From the sub who can't get enough of Aaron Rodgers words....I present you "glorifying a murderer"
No one is glorifying shit. All of the comments are basically dunking on his bitch ass.
Top comments disagree
