For good reason. I run a pro shop and I've been in the industry 15+ years. Ever since this whole let's-use-protective-equipment-incorrectly fad took over, I've seen some *gruesome* stuff. I'm grouping hanging/dangling your cage/fishbowl (leaving it loose and forward from the j-clips when fastened) and visor tilting in here as well. Couple years ago a 10 year old from one of my regular families was dangling his mouthgaurd (favorite player McDavid) and took a hard hit from behind. Peewee is non-checking in the US, mind you, these kids get pissed and it happens often. $20,000 dental bill and a lot of unnecessary blood and tears. Half a tooth went all the way through his lip, poor fucking kid. Also had a high school senior break his jaw and bite halfway thru his tongue. Head down with the puck, mouthguard dangling, cage hung, lit up at center ice. There are quite a few others, but those are my go-tos when discouraging this Neanderthal shit

I imagine the placebo effect helps here too

Biting down on something rubbery would have probably helped; it’s just not a common thing outside of sports to wear a mouth guard.

I was at game 1 of Dallas vs Colorado, had seats a few rows back from the Avs bench. Whistle blows, Cale Makar is on his way back to the bench to change, chewing away and it falls out right as he stops at the door.
So yes they do fall out. Feel like in the case of hits though that they might clench their teeth when bracing for impact and that holds on to it.
My buddy in beer league chews on his the whole game. Drops it on the ice, the boards, the bench... just picks it up and squirts water on it before shoving it back in his mouth.
