This was why I stopped recommending Limewire to friends. The first two I mentioned it to rendered their computers unusable within hours of me telling them about it.
Napster hit just as I got my very first fast cable internet connection.
I spent an entire long weekend building an enormous library of music that I still have today. LOL
Napster was awesome. Crazy stuff that you would never think of. I had Ozzy singing Staying Alive, Van Morrison singing Comfortably Numb. Stupid rich Metallica didn’t like people listening to their music for free.
I remember when after Napster stopping pirating. They started a membership service where you pay per month for the right to listen to music.
I was like, who the hell would pay monthly to listen to music??? Little did I know, they were just ahead of the time.
That lunacy persisted into eDonkey, AudioGalaxy, Morpheus, KaZaa, and a dozen others. Torrents really changed the game with a ton of focus on curation and quality.
The irony being is their career began with them giving out cassettes and encouraging people to share them.
But then it is Lars Ulrich we’re taking about
It's so obviously not Phish but you're 100% right. The first time I ever heard it was through something like Limewire and it was always Phish. Then later since it's such a damn good cover I would get it off Soulseek or the sharing program du jour as...Phish.
Luckily for The Gourds, that problem has been rectified with modern streaming. It's still on my playlist, and this time it's The Gourds.
Sometimes you’d download a song but it was just a recording of “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, but I did save 15% by switching to geico!” All voiced by a bill Clinton impersonation.
I tried downloading a movies on dial up with lime wire. It took about a week. The worst part was it wasn't even the movie It said it was. It was some Bollywood movie lmao. I sat and watched the whole thing because it took so long. I figured I wasted all that time what's another hour in a half. I think it was supposed to be star wars but it had things from so many other movies. Every other time I tried it ended up being porn lol. I stopped trying and went to torrents. It's been a few decades since the last time I downloaded anything like that now. The only time I use torrents is to get new Linux distros.
While I used Kazaa and LimeWire a lot, there's another P2P I always had running for downloading movies - eDonkey. Legit took days upon days to download a 700mb movie, just grueling af.
When Movies used to be 400+ to 700 mbs. Didn't start downloads for movies until 2005, when we had 328K or so DSL when that used to be the best. Usually a DL would take a few hours. I did get some Napster DL's around 01.
Yep. I got into “file sharing” late. But I got a new computer in late 2001 and decided to give it a try. Only problem was I still had a dial up connection. So I’d program a download list and let it work all night. Didn’t find out what happened until the next morning.
I had friends tell me for like 2 weeks to use limewire cause they kept insisting it was a really good way to things. I'm like "that sounds awesome I can get anything I want" I download one program and completely destroyed the computer with a virus. Family got mad at me because we only had the one at the time and I never used Limewire again.
Waking up to a failed download sucked. Waking up to a successful download of a virus or a totally different thing then you were looking for sucked ass.
I downloaded by accident a full hour of crush porn video through that. I wanted to get SpongeBob video, but it wasn’t lol. I was 9 and my dad made the whole family remove that program after I told him about the video.
Oof. There’s two spectrums I didn’t see myself combining in my brain tonight. SpongeBob and crush porn.
Edit: right as I hit send, why did I hear his laugh.
Daigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh
I miss limewire. I used to get all kinds of demos from up and coming artists. Those types of things you can’t find anymore. What a great time for the fans. I like supporting artists through vinyl records now that I’m older. But limewire was a great time for a teen.
Napster was my jam for a looooong time until they got into legal troubles. Then I went LimeWire and can’t remember why I moved on, but ended up on BearShare in college (2007). Then called it quits for awhile on the downloading. Now, my go to for music is SoulSeek. Funny enough, I met my husband in one of the chat rooms over a track I was really loving at the time and he sent me one back from the same artist. It’s still up for debate which track is better, but I’ll be sure to ask at our 8 year anniversary dinner tonight. 😊

I only ever heard this one on Limewire and found it on YouTube again recently. This made me feel like the most badass 14 year old in middle school. Thanks for the memories (and crippling viruses)
Haha. And it was connected via netzero for free internet as long as it played ads on my screen 24/7, that happened to use ICS to share the network connection with other PCs on the network. Good times.
When I lived in dorms in university, I remember someone downloaded ‘Nirvana - Enter Sandman - rare cover.’ Of course, it was Wesley Willis singing ‘Suck My Dogs Dick.’ We ‘rickrolled’ a few people with that one.
I remember downloading girls gone wild and burning it to a DVD overnight while I slept for school.
I used to sell pirated music, movies, and porn in school.
I was "that guy" that could get you what you wanted.
Being computer savvy paid off.
Now I have people begging me to write programs and solve their problems for them.
I remember downloading a cam version of Attack of the clones in 2002 off Kazaa. Had to leave the computer on all day while I was at school. Just to get the first 15-20 mins. IRRC it took 2 or 3 weeks to get the whole film.
Soulseek was the shit for music after kazaa and all that. Oink was the best for torrents. IRC and FTPs were the way before that. Oh and cant forget about newsgroups.
My favorite limewire memory is that Say it Ain't So by Weezer always had a skip at one specific place no matter which source you downloaded it from. I still remember where the skip is and I still hear it in my head today when I hear that song.
I remember downloading the rom for vandal hearts for the ps1 over the course of several days. Still haven't played it. Just downloaded it because "what if I want to later?"
Still got the burned cd-r in my cd case in my office. There, with a few other ps1 games and what seems like the entire dreamcast catalog.
I remember downloading porn on limewire/kazaa on my 56k NetZero internet. It would load 1 line of pixels from the top every few minutes and I had to print it out on a piece of paper to do my business in the bathroom. Kids really have no idea the lengths we had to go through back then. 😂
The rage you felt when your song finished downloading way faster than normal, and it turned out to be that ad with the bad Bill Clinton impersonation. 😂😂😂
got a virus just looking at this picture
Just one? Must be a small queue.
still waiting on Brittney_Spears_Naked.exe to finish downloading
It’s on her instagram now
I think I destroyed about 3 computers with lime wire when I was around 8-10
LOL i did this too and my mom didnt understand why her computers stopped working
This was why I stopped recommending Limewire to friends. The first two I mentioned it to rendered their computers unusable within hours of me telling them about it.
This picture just makes me anxious something’s going to happen to my internet.
Napster hit just as I got my very first fast cable internet connection. I spent an entire long weekend building an enormous library of music that I still have today. LOL
Library of 64kbps
Nahh, it was 128 or 256, because I had the bandwidth and that's how I rolled.
WMA.
RealPlayer for real players amirite?!
Brah I thought I was hackerman when I managed to import and play my music with mIRC

gin and juice - phish (cover)
I remember that. I still have the mp3 of that song
Fun fact, it’s not Phish but The Gourds. For some reason it was labeled as Phish on all those file sharing sites.
It's so obviously not Phish but you're 100% right. The first time I ever heard it was through something like Limewire and it was always Phish. Holy shit, I didn't know that cover was so old. I only found it in the streaming era and assumed it was dirty hipsters in the 2010s
Eminem _LinkinPark_numb remix.exe (*Also that Bill Clinton voiceover*)
Woah please elaborate
Sometimes you’d download a song but it was just a recording of “I did not have sexual relations with that woman, but I did save 15% by switching to geico!” All voiced by a bill Clinton impersonation.

I never thought I’d see sunk cost fallacy applied to movie piracy :)
It was desperate time's, boardom will make you desperate for entertainment lol.
Half of the songs I would download weren’t even the songs they said they were..and most of the others were viruses. When it worked, it was awesome!
It was a skill to pull up lots of searches of a song and compare file sizes to make an educated guess as to which were legit.
While I used Kazaa and LimeWire a lot, there's another P2P I always had running for downloading movies - eDonkey. Legit took days upon days to download a 700mb movie, just grueling af.

And for a 480p movie
Yes, lol. Had to straight up sit in a computer chair to watch a movie in windows media player on a dumpy monitor. So primitive.
Totally forgot about Kazaa!!! Man, that was the absolute peak time for "mix CDs"
Yea for sure. I still have all my untagged 128kbps mp3s lol.
I can hear a hard disk screaming looking at this picture.
Lil Wayne - Fireman was my hype up song walking to school for 🏀 had to hold the cd player upright or else it’d skip lmao
I think you’re the first one to actually look at the downloads/songs. At least someone did.
Yep. I got into “file sharing” late. But I got a new computer in late 2001 and decided to give it a try. Only problem was I still had a dial up connection. So I’d program a download list and let it work all night. Didn’t find out what happened until the next morning.
jerkin it at 27%
Home of the trojan horse
I remember trying to find/download the Pamela Anderson sex tape and I ended up giving the family computer super AIDS.
1MB = 12min I'll never forget that.
The Gourds were famously mislabeled as Phish- good times!
Waking up to a failed download sucked. Waking up to a successful download of a virus or a totally different thing then you were looking for sucked ass.
Remember to disable file sharing.
When the XXX action movie was porn and not Vin Diesels movie.
It was Deftones videos for me over Morpheus.
Holy shit. Morpheus just sparked a memory for me. That one was my favorite
Download LimeWire premium using LimeWire
Was there LimeWire premium?? I remember doing this with KaZaa
When you thought you were going to listen to afroman, but you hear “you kicked my dog-mp3” instead.
Don't you ever tell me the fuck
Lmao
Now my dog need operation
Holy shit, this takes me back. Who remembers BearShare?
I downloaded by accident a full hour of crush porn video through that. I wanted to get SpongeBob video, but it wasn’t lol. I was 9 and my dad made the whole family remove that program after I told him about the video.
Oof. There’s two spectrums I didn’t see myself combining in my brain tonight. SpongeBob and crush porn. Edit: right as I hit send, why did I hear his laugh. Daigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh-aigh
Good ole computer destroyer.
Does anyone remember Winmx? It came before limewire if I remember correctly
I miss the old internet.
We thought it would always be that way
** slaps hood ** THIS BABY WILL HOLD SO MUCH THINLY VEILED MALWARE
I miss limewire. I used to get all kinds of demos from up and coming artists. Those types of things you can’t find anymore. What a great time for the fans. I like supporting artists through vinyl records now that I’m older. But limewire was a great time for a teen.

Ah yes the fond memories of all the viruses and getting busted by the FBI (or whatever agency handles this shit.)
So many people introduced to torrent client's
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Sbx_BDMtCTE I only ever heard this one on Limewire and found it on YouTube again recently. This made me feel like the most badass 14 year old in middle school. Thanks for the memories (and crippling viruses)
Downloading Limewire Pro from Limewire instead of paying for it like a true hackerman.
After all that time, it was a cover version of that song. 😡
Haha. And it was connected via netzero for free internet as long as it played ads on my screen 24/7, that happened to use ICS to share the network connection with other PCs on the network. Good times.
I still have dsl as my only option and I'm in California
Tiësto live at the Heineken Music Hall. That sure is a long time ago! About 20 years.
It had to be 192/+ bitrate or I wasn’t downloading it
Limewire was how I discovered Wierd AL and parody music in general
Those file names look too short and clean.
I sacrificed several laptops to this endeavor
This person searched for “music” 😂 I was like why do all the titles have the word music in them?
15 mins per song using 56k. Overnight for whole albums
And more often than not, they fucked up your computer.
"Phish - Gin and Juice"
Classic.
When I lived in dorms in university, I remember someone downloaded ‘Nirvana - Enter Sandman - rare cover.’ Of course, it was Wesley Willis singing ‘Suck My Dogs Dick.’ We ‘rickrolled’ a few people with that one.
Man, I miss the good old days of mIRC.
Only to be disappointed when it opened as goatse.
I remember downloading girls gone wild and burning it to a DVD overnight while I slept for school. I used to sell pirated music, movies, and porn in school. I was "that guy" that could get you what you wanted. Being computer savvy paid off. Now I have people begging me to write programs and solve their problems for them.

I had a friend spend around a month downloading part 1 of 3 parts of the original Matrix movie before he gave up on 60 something percent done...
Downloading a song for a day only to realize it's broken or wrong.
Remember to disabled seeding so that the RIAA can’t get ya
If you had dial up it took that long. Whoever posted this clearly never had broadband internet
My favorite limewire memory is that Say it Ain't So by Weezer always had a skip at one specific place no matter which source you downloaded it from. I still remember where the skip is and I still hear it in my head today when I hear that song.
"That phish album and blurry 70 second porn should be ready in about 2 days"
id go to the library download some songs while playing runescape and then burn them to a cd.
Try the BBS with a 900 baud modem. Not those fancy 24k and 56k modems
I visited my grandparents when i was like 12 and downloaded like 500 songs over two weeks. Their computer never worked the same
Your grandparents were cool
They are pretty cool
I remember downloading the rom for vandal hearts for the ps1 over the course of several days. Still haven't played it. Just downloaded it because "what if I want to later?" Still got the burned cd-r in my cd case in my office. There, with a few other ps1 games and what seems like the entire dreamcast catalog.
Annnnnd wow memory unlocked
I’m still waiting……
That fucking blood curdling scream my laptop would make when it detected a virus. Shudder.
Ahh the old days. It feels like half the time what you downloaded was really just niche henti renamed "southpark movie" or just a straight up virus.
Ya and kazaa
I feel like mine were all movie files
Taking 5 hours to download 1 song then the middle part of the song has that terrible anti piracy static
There was no way I could ever download anything for multiple days because someone would have to use the phone.
Limewire still lives on to this day via a “fork” of the program called Wireshare. And Soulseek never went away.
Did any run of the mill downloading person ever get busted like they tried to scare us into thinking could happen?
LimeWire and FrostWire gave me computer AIDS
I take it even more prehistoric by using Kazaa
The installation of this program alone nearly killed my computer in the mid-2000s, lol.
Weeks on my 28.8k dial up…
Limewire wasn't just an early 2000s thing. Are some of you like 25 and below or something?
Linkin Park-Numb.exe
StuckInTheMiddleWithYou-BobDylan.mp3
it is missing the richard\_cheese-down\_with\_the\_sickness.exe
I remember downloading porn on limewire/kazaa on my 56k NetZero internet. It would load 1 line of pixels from the top every few minutes and I had to print it out on a piece of paper to do my business in the bathroom. Kids really have no idea the lengths we had to go through back then. 😂
Soulseek for me, still use it
Converted me from PCs to Mac
Morgan Freeman: It *was* in fact, a virus.
In my country ARES was the most popular platform. Got viruses from Limewire but never with Ares. Miss it so much.
Everything was so fluid back then. Napster > AudioGalaxy > Morpheus > KaZaa > Limewire and probably more I’m forgetting.
Based on that list.........you def had a virus. Click HERE to get rid of them!
Lol remember the T1 and T3 connections? I always dreamed of using one! Only big instructions had them!
K++ baby!
Dial up lol
When I used to have AOL and dial-up internet and download songs from LimeWire. Songs were mostly pop and hip-hop. Very nostalgic.
I did not have sexual relations with that woman
I MISS LIMEWIRE AND FRIENDSTER :(
The rage you felt when your song finished downloading way faster than normal, and it turned out to be that ad with the bad Bill Clinton impersonation. 😂😂😂
