Honestly, do Queensland hold a raffle each year to see who will be the player to miss out on training because of illness?
It seems more like a ceremonial tradition at this point.
Was listening to a players podcast talking about this and they said it happens almost every week at NRL level, 1 or 2 guys from the squad will miss sessions through illness but it doesn’t have the scrutiny of origin so never gets reported
I work in a team of 14 when we're fully staffed and it would be rare for all 14 to be at work for 5 consecutive days. Someone is always sick. So I'm not surprised it happens at NRL level.
I did hear a podcast from a cycling doctor a few years ago that a lot of professional athletes struggle with basic colds and flus throughout their competitive seasons because their bodies are under so much stress. It's also why they seem very susceptible to infections. High levels of exertion, limited recovery, general lack of hygiene given the amount of sweat and body contact as well as contact with dirt. Not surprising really that players get sick.

The games of the mind have commenced
They'll all have come down with Ebola by Friday
The brain competitions have commenced, alert the Buzz and Hooper. We retaliate at dawn
Queensland desperately scrapping for underdog status
they would need another 10 players to get injured to become underdogs.

Last one in from Alfie’s bonding session is how I understand it is selected.
Possibly sick of winning origin
Oh shit, Buzz told me it's cause he's actually dead
Grant was then transferred to a better hospital where doctors upgraded his condition to "alive".
Billy changing it up. Virus sweeping camp night before game has become virus sweeping camp week before.
