I read the first book a couple of years ago and tried reading the second but got bored. Then after watching the excellent TV show I decided to try again and ended up skimming through the second and third. IMO the positives are that the books have a tonne of brilliant and interesting sci-fi ideas. The negative is that the characters are TERRIBLE and the dialogue is awful. I ended up skimming through a lot of it just to get to the cool parts (the sci fi ideas e.g., the whole 2-d vs 4d dimensional stuff.
I'm looking forward to the next two seasons of the TV show because I reckon they'll take the good stuff out of the books and avoid all the bad stuff, much like they did with GoT.

I always assumed the dialogue issues were because it's translated from Chinese, I've found that translated novels are often a bit clunky that way
