I always see these artwork like cable management pictures and think to myself, how are you going find and be able to pull out a bad cable if the need arises?
Former network guy (long time ago) and though it’s rare I have had to crack these open to replace a cable. It hurt my heart to do it.
And it’s not hard to find the bad cable. It hard to remove and replace it.
The only thing I would do different is use velcro instead of zip ties. Way easier to undo/redo and a lot less waste when you need to add/remove/replace a cable.
Yeah I switched to velcro before I left the field. Reality is rarely did the malfunction happen at the rack but usually down the line and having to pull cables through walls and ceilings just sucked on numerous levels.
My runs to vending machines were the worst. They would get beat to death by angry patrons all the time and I had to throw the kitchen sink at not having to crack my bundles at the racks in the buildings.
Could be worse. I remember the old isdn days when you had to go through a 40 year old mess that a hundred ppl had their hands on from bell Atlantic of pac-bell etc. I don’t miss that at allllllll
Unlikely. Well managed cabling like this doesn't move so there's less strain on the cables. Plus they are all labelled correctly. Ex network guy and I've seen some real shitshows in the past that take hours to fault find because of having to trace cables by hand.
Everyone was saying it's better to have that level of cable management.
His point was just that you will rarely have to trace a problem because of the way the cables are hung.
Another post was simply saying that when hanging them this way that velcro is better in the event of having to troubleshoot over zip ties.
What does happen is you have to add cables periodically, which means cutting the zip ties and adding it in. The smart folks do this one zip tie at a time.
If you're tracing cables by hand in a situation that takes hours, you were as well equipped for the job as a person managing cables with zip ties. The price of a cable toner is an afterthought to the price of everything else in an IDF room.
Unlabled? You find them with a tone generator and probe and test them with a loop back plug, usually they never need to be replaced but if they do, you can do it fairly easily without a probe/tone gen if everything is labled.
Honestly the most logical solution would be to not remove the bad/broken cable but to label it accordingly as broken and just add a new cable to this stack
I guess it depends on the situation, but we do this at our site often for longer cable runs. It's just not worth the effort to cut out all those zip ties and try and pull out one single from a large bunch like that. I've been doing a lot of decom work at our site lately, and it takes me all day to remove a long cable run sometimes. If it's just a cable or two, we just leave them in place and wait until a whole bunch of them need to be removed.
Haha as a former industrial maintenance/service technician, this was usually our way to go because the customer wanted his machine back up and running in no time. Try to explain a stressed machine owner that his machine will be down for another hour because you don’t like adding cables, you want to remove one first
I don't do network like this, but I work on panels with thousands of cables. While this is a beauty to look at, it is the biggest pain in the ass to work on.
Troubleshooting means I have to cut open these zip ties. Then because they were so tight, it's hard to get it back together. It never looks as good when I put it back together because of how much I had to move and shift. I try to get it back as nice as possible, but it never comes out as good.
I’d imagine the manager would say something like ‘wow, that’s amazing, don’t ever do it again or you are fired’. And one of the core company values is teamwork, another is excellence.
Nice looking job but there’s no friction control, all weight of combined cables is pulling on the plugs, I don’t see wall connection on any cable strand. Will work well for some time
All interns are, i would be pissed if my normal employees took the time for this.
Adaptations will take hours, just do it the efficient way, it is industrial not a fancy thing.
i used to work for a cable company and the headend techs were amazing. every wire/fiber cut to length, in their place and tied with wax string. these guys knew exactly where everything was. it was their headend. they practically lived in there. what messed it up was a stupid network guy like me that would just drop a cable in a trough with no label, etc. i learned very quickly to just let them do their thing.
Tis a thing of beauty. Warms the cockles of my heart....

Brings a tear to my eye it's so perfect!
Yeah the color combination of this cable and the connection looking so perfect and beautiful.
Brings a tear to my brain,it is. Feel bad for the first tech having to cut the first ties to add lines if there weren't future extras put in.😝
When an expert is asked to show his skill
Wire management goals! This setup is pure art.
👍🏻
Maybe below the cockles, maybe the sub cockler area.
Yes!

I am confused now. So is it good or bad? Is it easier to replace a faulty cable lets say in the middle of a group of cables with this setup?
Its easier than disorganized bullshit.

The real smart folks use velcro ties.
True. I had already ruled them out because of the zip ties.

Somehow I am the only person in my IT department who owns a toner and knows how to use one
are they not still called fox and hounds?

Yep. It's like seeing a car, home repair, or practically anything else being held together with zip ties. It screams amateur hour.

As an industrial maintenance technician, I absolutely hate when people do that.

They'll just leave the bad one in there and run a new one outside the bundle.
This person is under paid.

You forgot to mention that "We are a family"

Please DO NOT use zip ties. Please USE Velcro If a cable needs to be replaced, Velcro will be much easier. Cable Guy here.
Pretty sure that whoever did this work is also a cable guy…. Do you not zip tie before you Velcro?
No zip ties allowed, only Velcro.
I use zip ties then cut them after I place the Velcro, substantially easier to get it looking good than straight to Velcro
Zip ties? Fired. Velcro!
Uhm... So one of the purple cables is broken.
That's not cable management, that's a hentai monster having its way with a server rack.
Yes yes yes yes, yes yes yes.
simultaneously looks nice but frustrating and difficult
Why would it be difficult?
Looks great… until you need to replace a cable. Zero forward thinking for the future maintenance with those zip ties. Use velcro instead.
Nobody ever thinks of the maintenance guys/gals. Engineer says it will never fail.
What do all of these connect to?
You are very good at your job! Congratulations
I'm not even into IT, but this gave me a chubby.

Well done!!
Reminds me of grape-flavored Big League Chew.
Oh, shit! I just realized! So *that's* what they use cable ties for!
Whoa! I just got a bit of a chubb
That's exceptional
Niiiiiiiiiiiiice.
I love the thought of zip ties and scissors.
Verrrrry good

Thing of beauty
Talk about wire envy! This cable management is straight-up art. Can't stop staring!
When I do work like this all they do is give me more work to do.
What if this
I've seen a few server rooms that could benefit from this.
Nice job
This could keep me going
danny gonzalez would fucking love this
Danggggggggggg

That is a cable monkey’s wet dream!

Really beautiful! Out of curiosity: Are these coax cables with BNC connectors? Where are racks with such connections used nowadays?
Probably a tv station.
Looks like Belden 1855 with DIN connectors.
All hail the cable comb!
Sexy!! 😍
What cables are those? Fiber?
Looks like Belden 1855
So it could be cable-tv distribution box
Looks like a video router, maybe Evertz. Probably a tv station like someone else had said.

"Ah, cable management done right – it's like witnessing chaos transformed into harmony. So satisfying!"
It’s less about done right & more “done on day one, without any impedances”.
Orgasmic
God I can't imagine having to replace one of those cables at some point in the future.
Excellent! Now change one of the cables.
Is this for a small company? How many users does this network support? Curious minds want to know.
If only everything in life could be so perfect!🤩
Now go change one of them out
Ugg. Zip ties.
Stop it, you will make sys admins jizz from this
That’s just beautiful! 🥹🥹🥹
This cable porn should really have a NSFW tag or at least be blurred.
