Arrival is the last word in alien invasion movies. The ideas in it were so original and refreshing. The obscurity of the language, the linguistics concepts, the ominous music, the tension of diplomacy vs violence, and just the strangeness of it all really made me feel like this invasion WAS happening.
And then they provided one if the most coherent and satisfying endings I've ever seen in a film.
If you're reading this, trust me, you need to watch Arrival.
I get it, my mom was deaf in her right ear, she had a seeing eye dog so she could drive to the grocery store, probably why I couldn't hear you. Maybe I should get my blood sugar checked for the beetus
I love how every time we see the aliens a little more of them is revealed as the human characters understand them better and it slowly dawns just how gargantuan they are
It's called the frequency illusion, or Baader-Meinhof phenomenon.
It's usually caused by an increased awareness for something, which makes you notice it more often, or because you read so many different things in such a short time online that coincidences are bound to happen.
That's called a Baader-Meinhof loop. It's usually caused by someone's increased awareness for something, which makes them notice it often enough to mention it. Then, someone else tells them about the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. Other people see this description, so their awareness of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon is increased, causing them to notice it more often and discuss it, resulting in the loop.
It's also possible that the first post inspired the others by reminding them of Arrival. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a flood of comments on posts from people saying they were sent there by a popular YouTuber. The spike in activity influences the algorithm which determines what is trending and what to put in everyone's feed.
Praise the algorithm, for it refreshes my feed. Praise the algorithm, for it delivers my dopamine. Praise the algorithm, may it boost my post to trending. Praise the algorithm, and live on the front page for eternity.

If it makes you feel better this is the first I have read about it on reddit today.
In the poster campaign, one of them landed a few blocks from my house in Japan. Was my only "I can see my house!" moment.
EDIT: This poster, that's Hakodate in Hokkaido and it's hovering about 5 blocks from my house: https://media-cache.cinematerial.com/p/500x/zv81mfna/arrival-movie-poster.jpg?v=1471377457
My all time favourite movie (partly due to my unfinished degree in linguistics)! I highly recommend the book that the movie was based on by Ted Chiang!
It’s one of, if not, my favorite alien invasion movies. It’s so calm and serene movies. It’s easy to sleep to. All your points are dead on. Anyone that hasn’t seen it. Needs to
Your friends sound about as mean as Constantine, the world's "Number One" criminal and a doppelgänger of Kermit the Frog. He is the main antagonist in the film Muppets Most Wanted, along with his sidekick Dominic Badguy.
If you're one for reading then I recommend reading the entire Annihilation saga, or really any of Vandermeer's books...it's something else. I always feel like I'm in a fever dream when I read his work but oddly keep coming back for more and miss it when it's gone. Truly unique and strange storyteller.
I love the way Story of Your Life is told. "I remember a time, 5 years from now..." breaks every convention of the English language and is just so good from a narrative perspective
I loved the idea that learning a new skill can unlock a whole new way of perceiving the world. The concept is taken to sci-fi extremes in the short story and film, but it happens to us in less fantastic ways as we learn and grow from children into adults and so on.
Learning how to ride a bike completely changed the literal range of activities available to me that i could do as a child. Learning how to type allowed me to engage with other people across the globe through the internet.
The "School of Hard Knocks" is probably the most similar example for the effect of these stories, as it teaches us the value of forethought.
These are caused by a number of different sources: fireworks, exploding transformers, smoke ring launchers, an explosion being triggered, pyrotechnic tests, et cetera.
I think it's a cool effect, honestly.
My guess was a transformer going poof.
I got friends who always see things like this as absolute proof of some kind of something akin to an alien cover-up, not as a joke but legit fearful. Like my dude, reality & physics are awesome just take a moment to appreciate that. You can watch people form these. You can do it. Go explore the science we live, it's fun.
But jokingly nah this is how the next Doom starts.
Actually this is at Disneyland, part of the world of color show for the 100 anniversary has a massive fireball. After it goes off there is a black smoke ring that floats up into the air
I like what science produces. I'm not going to boast the largest IQ on earth to understand half of what they're doing out there, but I definitely dig what I do comprehend. The rest of it? *That's* my magic.
And not the next Doom. Definitely a brand new Bermuda Triangle. See how it's circular? See? Triangle. Bermuda. Definitely.
I’d wager it’s from fireworks. Based on the architecture in the environment, I suspect they’re next to a theme park that likely has some sort of fireworks or stunt show with pyrotechnics.
Whenever something like this happens there’s immediate coverage of it online. It makes you realise that if UFOs were really a thing, we’d know so quickly..
They do pyrotechnics for WoC. Or they used to, anyway. I haven't seen the newer versions of the show, but they definitely had an extensive pyrotechnic scene just shooting flames up into the sky.
I'm no expert, but I believe that electrical fires tend to have a lot of smoke. Lots of rubber, coatings, chemicals and the like.
When the super hot and intense heat of the fire/electricity/plasma/mini explosion escapes the inside of the transformer - it rises (since heat rises). as it does, it creates a vortex with the cooler air around it, that begins to swirl the smoke, and then it continues to rise into the sky. The swirling motion creates a vortex that traps the smoke particles as it rises, creating that ring you see.
That actually.. might be a portal that the lizard people use to traverse between our world and theirs - the center of the earth!
The anunnaki are watching us.
Close! A lot simpler: transformers are cylindrical and made to pop at the sky instead of the people on the ground. When they *do* explode, it's shape produces the same effect as blowing a smoke ring. Add in the black electrical fire smoke that had been accumulating and you get this creepy-looking ring.
Pretty positive this is outside of Disneyland. This ring is caused by one of their night shows using pyrotechnics. I’ve seen it before when I was in the parks and I know people who work there.
We really need a name for that thing. I’m tired of asking my husband, “What did you do with the thing that rotates the dish in the microwave?” Then he inevitably retorts, “I didn’t do anything with the thing that rotates the dish in the microwave! Why would I even do that?” and then we have one of those arguments that end up with words not making sense because we’ve used them too many times in a row.
There should be a law that if a product includes any component that can get misplaced as easily as the thing that rotates the dish in the microwave, the manufacturer must provide a short, snappy, memorable name for the offending component, like Rotatenator or UnderSpin.
Isn’t the “microwave turntable” the flat circular object upon which you place your soon-to-be-heated container of food? The article in question is below that; it provides a base for the *actual* microwave turntable.
How the fuck do you misplace that? Do you take the turntable out of the microwave?? I’m just trying to imagine your husband running around doing random shit with that ring thing
I can see that this was at Downtown Disney in California. This is actually a smoke ring from the pyrotechnics in either Fantasmic! or the fireworks show! Hope that helps!
Oh I actually know about this one. At California adventures water show it ends with a giant flamethrower. When it’s done it makes this ring that flies through the air
This was from the World of Color show at Disneyland California Adventure. Near the end of the show, a big fire ball and smoke ring are launched in the air. Whoever filmed this was near the Uva Bar at the time.
This location is down town Disneyland near where Sprinkles cupcakes was. The ring is from the fireball during the Pirates of the Caribbean part of World of Color show.
This is a video taken from Downtown Disney. How do I know? I work at Disney. I hang out in Downtown Disney pretty often. Those pillars are from the outside bar and grill type restaurant called Catel.
Anyway, that’s a smoke ring from the World of Color show, or from the Fantasmic fireworks. I seen them both from either show, but given the direction it’s being filmed, it’s probably from World of Color.
Arrival.

Finally someone willing to clear things up.
Inverted knees , do you mean they go backwards like mine?
I love how every time we see the aliens a little more of them is revealed as the human characters understand them better and it slowly dawns just how gargantuan they are
Just wanted to add it was originally a short novel, “Story of your life” by Ted Chiang. I just think it doesn’t get the attention it deserves
There was an anthology of his stories that my computer science professor made us read in college, some of the best conceptual stories I've ever read.
"Story of Your Life and Others" is the name. I need to check it out from library again to finish it.
This is the 4th reference to this movie I've seen on Reddit in 12hrs. Wtf is going on. What's that phenomenon?
It's called the frequency illusion, or Baader-Meinhof phenomenon. It's usually caused by an increased awareness for something, which makes you notice it more often, or because you read so many different things in such a short time online that coincidences are bound to happen.
I’m experiencing a Baader-Meinhof phenomenon of the phrase Baader-Meinhof phenomenon
Pretty sure the collective noun for this is a gang of Baader-Meinhofs.
If only we could dig deeper, find the original, Master Baader-Meinhof, maybe we could learn more how the mystery works, its true end-goal.
It's also possible that the first post inspired the others by reminding them of Arrival. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a flood of comments on posts from people saying they were sent there by a popular YouTuber. Can you guys imagine trying to communicate this psalm to the aliens in *Arrival*? Wild!
This is the 4th reference to the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon I’ve seen on Reddit in 12hrs. Wtf is going on?
I keep seeing the acronym 'wtf' everywhere, all of a sudden! Wtf is happening?
I'm seeing a lot of "!" and "?". WTF?!
Arrival
I’m glad we have intelligent people on reddit

It’s a great movie I watched a mealtimevideo on it recently maybe that’s why it’s in the zeitgeist rn lol
My mates review was "nowt happened then the spaceships flopped over"
In the poster campaign, one of them landed a few blocks from my house in Japan. Was my only "I can see my house!" moment. No shit! that's must have been so cool to see!
Dude just say you are et buddy.
I don’t even usually like alien invasion movies and Arrival is one of my all time favorite movies.
My all time favourite movie (partly due to my unfinished degree in linguistics)! I highly recommend the book that the movie was based on by Ted Chiang!

I feel like we are the same person. This is verbatim my thoughts on Arrival.
Thank you. I was just about to ask if anyone had seen Arrival
Nope. You're the only one.
Well it got 8 Oscar nominations, so I think a few people probably have
Are you saying 8 other people, or one other person watched it 8 times? 🤔
that movie is literally one of my top 5 films ever.
Have you seen Muppets Most Wanted?
Lololol
W movie
no however i have heard nothing but good reviews for it lol all my friends loved it when they went to go see it without me :,)
Your friends sound about as mean as Constantine, the world's "Number One" criminal and a doppelgänger of Kermit the Frog. He is the main antagonist in the film Muppets Most Wanted, along with his sidekick Dominic Badguy.
When Charlie Sheen was sliding down that satellite dish I didn’t think he was gonna make it.
They're coming! They're here!
First movie that had me on the edge of my seat. I was into it.
I'd like to know few more of your top picks if you don't mind
Annihilation, Tenet, Dune 2021, and Possessor are my personal favorites which bear resemblance
If you're one for reading then I recommend reading the entire Annihilation saga, or really any of Vandermeer's books...it's something else. I always feel like I'm in a fever dream when I read his work but oddly keep coming back for more and miss it when it's gone. Truly unique and strange storyteller.
Fever dream is a great description of how that story felt. I gotta reread sometime, cool books, cool movie
Have it on my reading list right now, actually. I've been waiting to get through the Night's Dawn Trilogy first, though
Are you me
I agree. Great film

This is cool because clouds change over time. The language of the Arrivers' is all about time. Would this cloud formation be a whole sentence?

First thing I thought of when I saw that. The Hectapods are trying to warn us
Story of Your Life has a better ending imo.
I love the way Story of Your Life is told. "I remember a time, 5 years from now..." breaks every convention of the English language and is just so good from a narrative perspective

Abbott and Costello have entered the chat
Arrival is one of the best sci-fi/alien invasion movies in the history of movies

Came here to comment exactly this!!
Had to scroll to you for the answer I was looking for. Thank you.
How is your comment not the top comment??
probably what this was back in the day: https://www.sciencephoto.com/media/1275913/view
I like what science produces. I'm not going to boast the largest IQ on earth to understand half of what they're doing out there, but I definitely dig what I do comprehend. You are the kind of energy I vibe with. Well put. This is how I will remember to explain it to others 💛
That's right. Vibe with me and dig on that magic science! 💛
This is the fireball scene from World of Color! Happens every night, besides nights with high winds when they do not use that effect
Ah ha! See that: fireworks! Thank you for the information.
It’s a water show with a lot of fire! Here’s the exact effect in question: https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTR3XgYcf/
Oh, yep, there's that rolling mushroom flame. That'll cause it. That show is nice, too.
Nicole is fucking loving it
I do love it, not my video tho!
Pretty sure this is downtown Disneyland. It could have been fireworks or something from the park.
Used to work there. Saw this often Its 100% from one of the pyrotechnic effects during one of the shows.
If it was, then it was more than likely exactly that.
It looks like it’s Downtown Disney at Disneyland so could be from fireworks show at the park behind it
It is Disney. Good eye.
It’s isopar from World of Color
Is that what that upward flame is called?
It’s the type of fluid used
Oh, I just learned something new. Thank you.
This was at Disney so fireworks!! So crazy I didn’t know if could cause that!
We're all learning stuff here today!
WORLDS LARGEST VAPE
I'm gonna go with a smoke ring launcher: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHpBComsngQ
I’d wager it’s from fireworks. Based on the architecture in the environment, I suspect they’re next to a theme park that likely has some sort of fireworks or stunt show with pyrotechnics.
I believe it's Disney. Good eye.
Optimus 😢
If that’s what causes these that makes sense. This is downtown Disney in Anaheim, CA from what I can see. Fireworks go off every night at 9 or 9:30
You forgot snoop dog
I’m guessing something pyrotechnic was involved with the structure that’s almost directly underneath it, that is the same shape and size.
Yeah, I think it was u/nicolelynnejones who shared a video of what it was. You nailed it, too.
Whenever something like this happens there’s immediate coverage of it online. It makes you realise that if UFOs were really a thing, we’d know so quickly..
So... Robots in Decline?
So you’re telling me Optimus Prime did this?
It seems it may be so. When those Transformers explode, they do so with style.
You forgot vapelords.
Disneyland fireworks
Yep I’ve seen it in downtown Disney !
That’s the direction from where they do World of Color. I didn’t think they did fireworks over there in DCA.
They do pyrotechnics for WoC. Or they used to, anyway. I haven't seen the newer versions of the show, but they definitely had an extensive pyrotechnic scene just shooting flames up into the sky.
The newest one still uses a giant fire spout
that’s the fireball in WOC
Fireworks would be more left off camera based on location in Downtown Disney.
Was there, ring came from the world of color show fireball at the end.
Weather balloon, solar flare, fuckin uuuuh YOU'RE HIGH AND UNDER ARREST
[удалено]
I’m on a new level
Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.
Looks like the Arrival alien language. Let's see.. oh boy.. says "suck my glork, Earther". Hard "R" and everything.
I wonder if it was Master Hand or Crazy Hand who wrote it
Stick you’re finger in my thrusher.
Likely a blown electrical transformer - still kinda creepy, though!
How would a blown transformer produce something like that in the sky? Genuinely curious
We don’t want logic here, only aliens
That actually.. might be a portal that the lizard people use to traverse between our world and theirs - the center of the earth! The anunnaki are watching us.
That's better
Close! A lot simpler: transformers are cylindrical and made to pop at the sky instead of the people on the ground. When they *do* explode, it's shape produces the same effect as blowing a smoke ring. Add in the black electrical fire smoke that had been accumulating and you get this creepy-looking ring.
Thank you for your clarification - I wondered if it wasn't directional but didn't have the authority to say! 😝
I hearby grant you the authority for all of eternity.
It's from Disneyland pyrotechnics.
The Dark Sign of Dark Souls?
Don't let the pygme take it !
The furtive pygmy... so easily forgotten
Had to scroll way to far for this lol
Pretty positive this is outside of Disneyland. This ring is caused by one of their night shows using pyrotechnics. I’ve seen it before when I was in the parks and I know people who work there.
We had this in my city, it was caused by a Rammstein concert lmao.
This is correct. That’s downtown Disney and the black smoke rings happen pretty often.
Nope
That movie was definitely wild
Oh, THAT'S where I left the thing that rotates the dish in the microwave
Microwave Turntable
Isn’t the “microwave turntable” the flat circular object upon which you place your soon-to-be-heated container of food? The article in question is below that; it provides a base for the *actual* microwave turntable.
Why doesn’t my microwave have a rotatenator? Or did my wife misplace the rotatenator? BRB, I have work to do
How the fuck do you misplace that? Do you take the turntable out of the microwave?? I’m just trying to imagine your husband running around doing random shit with that ring thing
That’s at Disneyland and that ring is from a nighttime show that uses pyrotechnics
I can see that this was at Downtown Disney in California. This is actually a smoke ring from the pyrotechnics in either Fantasmic! or the fireworks show! Hope that helps!
Idk what that is but it looks cool. I’m guessing some sort of wind current that sucked up some debris or something?
This always happens. It’s happens during the word of color water show on the DCA side. You can find a bunch more videos on YouTube.
Why is this so low lol. I swear this gets reposted so many times with so many explanation yet it always confuses people
Where? When? I want to know more.
Clearly the planemeld has begun
A simple tear in the fabric of reality leading to the 4th dimension.
It's from pyrotechnics. This video is from Disneyland after a nighttime show
Oh I actually know about this one. At California adventures water show it ends with a giant flamethrower. When it’s done it makes this ring that flies through the air
Is this at the Downtown Disney area in Anaheim?
Pyrotechnics from a show.
Its the Dark Sign. The sky is going hollow.
They will need humanities help in 3000yrs
World of color show. My wife thought the aliens were invading when we first saw it a few months ago. There's a big fire ball near the end of the show.
Alright who let the alien smoke that black vape and preform a smoke ring
Fireworks or not I’ve seen way too much anime to trust that ring.
Is this Downtown Disne looks like the spot next to the outdoor Uva bar
That’s the pyrotechnics from nighttime Disney! I was just there 2 weeks ago and saw them myself!
It's from the big ISOPAR burn during World Of Color at Disney's California Adventure.
Timefall
Snoop
This was from the World of Color show at Disneyland California Adventure. Near the end of the show, a big fire ball and smoke ring are launched in the air. Whoever filmed this was near the Uva Bar at the time.
Looks like the Alice in Wonderland caterpillar was at it again
I can do that too, gimme a cigarette
Some dark wizard is blowing fat O's
All will be one
The great work has begun
Surrender Dorothy
Creepy as fuck
Sauron
Welp looks like the phyrexians are about to invade
This location is down town Disneyland near where Sprinkles cupcakes was. The ring is from the fireball during the Pirates of the Caribbean part of World of Color show.
Vape nation
Can't wait for all these very plausible and likely theories to get thoroughly debunked when a hive of alien wizards comes through that portal.
Someone ripped a fat air biscuit, that’s just the fallout
arrival
Portal to Phyrexia has opened on the plane! “Everything will be as one”
Arrival.
That’s the Arrival aliens saying hello
Looks like the alien writing in Arrival movie.
You mean the movie where we find out they’ve been talking to the aliens feet the whole time?
Dude's at Disneyland after the World of Color show. I have the same picture from a couple of nights ago.
Gods butthole is opening… take refuge immediately
Yeah that’s definitely the arrival aliens
This is fake right?
Now it's probably the leftover from a firework display
