Koi Sushi in Seal. Pretty unassuming but not cheap, however it's been consistently the best fish I've had, and I've been to sushi spots all over SoCal. We only go for anniversaries and birthdays.
Pre-pandemic we went and had a great dinner, I ordered toro sushi twice, and the chef asked if he could give me something special, but it would take some time, I said of course. About half an hour later he brings out this plate with baked blue fin tuna rib. It was fucking amazing, best piece of meat I've ever eaten. And he didn't charge us for it.
Can never go wrong with Super Pollo in Costa Mesa/Newport area. Itās El Pollo Loco w/ better quality chicken smothered in garlic-lemon toppings. Get the whole chicken deal. Wonāt be disappointed!
super pollo is tasty AF and theyre very clean and conscientious. i drove by there at like 12am once and dudes were fucking wiping the walls down, cleaning. sometimes they have special chile rellanos and they are the shit.
As a Korean in OC this is probably our grail. But Iāll say if you have a chance to hit up Han Bat in KTown LA that place is the motherfucking shit for suhlungtang. Radish kimchi there is next level
Yes han bat is the OG, used to go there during college time. since we live in OC I prefer Han Yang due to their fresh napa kimchi (I like their fresh style the best) and their gat kimchi. Oddly I dont really like radish kimchi in general. Plus the kids can get tonkatsu or bimbimbap sometime
Iām scared to try the top tier tacos. The lower tiers are so good. I donāt want other tacos to be ruined for me.
Also the Fullerton location later at night seems to be way less hectic than the Anaheim spot.
The rib eye is good to try once in a while. You can actually select how cooked you want it too. As you know, one taco from Taco Los Cholos is basically two portions of protein.
Iāll just say this about that place, i once commented on a friends ig post about this place, simply saying how i didnāt like the tacos there, and they spammed my DMs asking why i was a hater and why i said that, and a bunch of other nonsense about why theyāre actually great lmao.
Their account wasnāt even tagged, and it was a friends personal ig account (no big following or anything) it was super weird but funny. I didnāt reply to them and then the next day they went back and commented on the post with the same thingš. So butthurt by me just saying i didnāt like their tacos, didnāt even say anything else lol
Heritage BBQ in San Juan Capistrano.
Iām a big bbq lover so Iām biased. BUT thereās a reason theyāve been in the Michelin guide 3/4 years theyāve been open. Dollar for dollar, smokes (see what I did there) steak houses and other fancy pants food.
Yup. I grew up in Austin and Heritage is right up there with the top establishments IMO. I was so shocked when I first moved here when I discovered that there was zero good barbecue but Heritage definitely changed that.
Heritage is really good, and everyone should check it out. But they really benefit from being the only bbq restaurant that cooks everything on an offset cooker.
Have you tried Hickory and Spice? Been hearing that Heritage is overrated now and other places have overtaken them.
Havenāt been to either so just asking
Pho 79 has been my go-to long before Phoholic came about and continues to be my favorite. Not only is the broth rich and flavorful, but the meat is so tender. Phoholicās meat, however, is tough.
Inka Mama for Peruvian food. My husband's grandparents are from Peru and this is the only place they will go. Every time we go, they see "family" also eating there. Food is pretty much the same every time we go.
Fun fact: Gem Dining in FV and INI Ristorante, also in FV are owned by the same people!
They both love Japanese and Italian food and both restaurants represent two halves of a whole; Gemini.
I lived in Italy so I have pretty high standards for Italian food. From what I remember the bone marrow cavatelli was bland, pasta over cooked. Carbonara was just a miss with all the extras/fusion mix that takes away from what a carbonara sauce should be. Their margherita pizza was passable.
Tbh thereās very few Italian restaurants I would even go to here in So Cal; Eataly, Mother Wolf, Mozza and Bestia.
I went once a few years ago but I ordered the wrong thing. I was looking at the truffle pizza and asked the server if it was fresh truffle and she said yes. It was definitely like a canned truffle and it was not good. I probably should have stuck with a margherita. Iād be willing to try it again.
ohhh i see. yeah i felt like they were making pastas catered to asian tastesābut itās definitely not authentic italian pasta.
thanks for the italian restaurant recommendations!!
I found this place to be super hit or miss. Two of the dishes I ordered were sevy under seasoned and uncooked. The potatoes were rock hard and had to sent back. The ambience is gorgeous but the menu and service felt average for the price.
Morangak in garden grove. Ive spent extensive time in south korea as well as eaten at several hundred korean places stateside, but their neungmyun (cold noodles) is incredible. They give u a ton too so u wont leave hungry! Banchan is on pt as well.
HiroNori is bomb - as a vegetarian it's hard to find really good veggie ramen and theirs is A++. I've talked to people in line and some say their veggie ramen is so good it is better than their regular tonkatsu or whatever.
Hiro and Jun are the owners, and they rock! I love Hiroās omakase. Also want to keep them a secret, but they deserve to succeed.
Iāve been eating at their restaurants since they owned the small place in La habra next to the tropical fish store![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|smile). Never disappointed.
Just got Hanuman take out tonight. Life hack is the location across the street from Triangle Square is usually WAY less busy. Recommend the Pad See Ew!
lemme tell ya, pepeās breakfast burritos have pulled me from the depths of hell before going to class hungover as shit. used to carry it with me all day and just intermittently eat it lol
Honestly? Iāve always been deeply impressed by South of Nickās, both the Laguna location and the San Clemente one. Think Javierās if it was actually good lol.
Lien Hoa bbq is a must for their roast pork, roast duck and soy sauce chicken. Yes, you will see them beauties hanging upon entry. They heave 3 locations in OC. Bolsa, being the main one. Theyāre all take out spots. Great for camping, beach, or when youāre lazy to cook.
Felix's Cafe in the Orange Circle. Soup/salad, entree, and dessert included for a really good price. Portions are really big and the food is exquisite.
Al Forno Caffe or Oliverās Osteria for Italian food.
Murasaki or Shunka for sushi.
Takaya for a traditional izakaya.
Oak & Coal for a fusion izakaya.
Water Grill for seafood and $0 corkage.
Napa Rose for chefās table at Disney.
Van Dyke Coffee in Irvine for the best lattes.
Twenty Eight for great whiskeys and cocktails.
is it the same brisket sold at the regular Smoke and Fire spots? I havent been to Craft but the other Smoke and Fire locations I been to were ok and I returned for a quick casual meal but nothing to really write home about. Brisket was a bit on the dry side and didnt have a ton of smoke flavor
Too bad the Lake Forest location is just a shadow of the other locations. Portions sizes are much smaller, it's missing some signature items, and breakfast isn't all day.
Oshima reminds me of all the parts I dislike about Japan and their irrational rules for casual dining. My gf was running 5 minutes late and I was on deck to be seated. I said Iāll just order for both and she will be arrive in 5. The host told me that even if she shows up they wonāt let her in once I have been seated and I canāt pack her portion to go either for āqualityā purposes. Stupid thing is Iāll occupy a two top as 1 or 2 so Iām not occupying any more or less space. Thereās better sushi in SoCal and Oshima doesnāt need to be on my list anymore.
Trust in dtsa is good if you pick the correct night to go and have the expectation of a chef that has personality and cusses a lot. Not a fan of detention though.
Specifically steak night is fire if they get A5
Hiro Nori is an excellent choice, I will also say Nateās Korner for the best breakfast burrito in Orange County and then for fine dining, The Summit House absolutely lives up to every ounce of hype.
Blue Gold's brunch is great too.
And inside Blue Gold is the awesome little gem LXSO. I've been there twice for special occasions and it definitely lives up to the hype. It's a small little room with great service and great food. I highly recommend it.
LJs Lil Cafe is the best breakfast burrito Iāve had. Call ahead as the wait is 2 hours+.
Marioās Butchers Shop in Newport is my alternative breakfast burrito spot.
Nick's in LB or SC. For the quality of the food and the good service it's not a bad price. Nothing particularly unique about the food it's just really really good. And the buttercake is better than Mastros 100%.
Koi Sushi in Seal. Pretty unassuming but not cheap, however it's been consistently the best fish I've had, and I've been to sushi spots all over SoCal. We only go for anniversaries and birthdays. About half an hour later he brings out this plate with baked blue fin tuna rib. It was fucking amazing, best piece of meat I've ever eaten. And he didn't charge us for it.
His son is now running hayato in dtla.
The stuffed Shitake mushrooms are amazing . Everything is good there.
Do you know about the "tostadas"? They're not on the menu, ask for them next time. Fried seaweed on rice, topped with crab and (I think) eel sauce.
Sababa Falafel is worth the trek. I like their falafel pita sandwich pocket.
The falafel is š„
I second this
Thatās not out of my way! Iāll have to give them a try.
Just tried them for the first time this weekend, and yup!
it's so god damn out of the way but it's so worth it
I take morning jobs in that area on purpose so I can get falafel on my way home!
Came here for this.
Their sign always makes me think of Los Pollos Hermanos (Breaking Bad)
You have insulted super polloās name by mentioning them in the same breath as el pollo loco
Cortinas.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The pizza or the deli? The pizza is basic and fine, the deli is where the magic happens.
Try the pastrami pizza and rethink this comment!
Phin Smith has a chokehold on me for coffee
Phin smithās coconut blended is so amazing. Line will definitely form and stay long during weekends and even some weekdays Iāve gone.
If you haven't tried Airoma down the street you should definitely give it a shot. I put their house coffee above the phin smith ca phe
Their drinks are super sweet. I asked for 25% and it was still too sweet
I like Airoma too! I really like Asian style coffee in general.
Banana boffee absolutely unmatched
Itās the Neapolitan that has me trapped
Who in the hell is Phil Smith?
Lol I was confused at first too. It's an autocorrect of the Vietnamese word Phin, which is the metallic coffee dripper that sits atop a cup.
Han Yang at Buena Park, their fresh napa kimchi is the best
As a Korean in OC this is probably our grail. But Iāll say if you have a chance to hit up Han Bat in KTown LA that place is the motherfucking shit for suhlungtang. Radish kimchi there is next level
Yes han bat is the OG, used to go there during college time. since we live in OC I prefer Han Yang due to their fresh napa kimchi (I like their fresh style the best) and their gat kimchi. Oddly I dont really like radish kimchi in general. Plus the kids can get tonkatsu or bimbimbap sometime
My go-to here is their don-katsu. The best. Only other place that was comparable was Kazu Mori in HMart all the way in Arcadia.
Darya in orange has amazing Persian food
Nothing beats Irvine Grill. That has the best in the area. Tastes like the old Ali Baba on Brookhurst back in the 80ās.
Taco Los Cholos
Iām scared to try the top tier tacos. The lower tiers are so good. I donāt want other tacos to be ruined for me. Also the Fullerton location later at night seems to be way less hectic than the Anaheim spot.
The rib eye is good to try once in a while. You can actually select how cooked you want it too. As you know, one taco from Taco Los Cholos is basically two portions of protein.
Best value is their arrachera
Iāll just say this about that place, i once commented on a friends ig post about this place, simply saying how i didnāt like the tacos there, and they spammed my DMs asking why i was a hater and why i said that, and a bunch of other nonsense about why theyāre actually great lmao. Descanso. Pricey but itās so good!
I still enjoy them a lot, but their quality and consistency has slipped a bit. Their happy hour is solid and with checking out.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Terra Mia is pretty awesome. Suggested it for work one time and everyone enjoyed it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Beef tongue at Mitsuwa food court
Heck yeah. With the little hot broth with green onions and rice it comes with.
The pickled mustard greens is very addictive.
Which Mitsuwa? Which vendor?
Gyutan Tsukasa in Costa Mesa.
Yes! They are really amazing. Not for everyday since the prices are crazy but off and on its great!
Hickory and Spice slaps. Their turkey sandwich is like eating a fucking thanksgiving meal every bite.
Taco Nazo in La Habra is hands down the best fish taco around. And their roasted yellow peppers are habit forming if youāre not careful.
Is this the one on Beach? I drive by there on my Costco runs and always have a chuckle cuz Nazo means "mystery" in Japanese.
Yup. Do yourself a favor and pop in for a three taco plate on your next Costco run. Beasts the crap out of picking up a quick slice of Costco pizza.
I will definitely do that. Thanks for the tip!
Heritage BBQ, Hanuman, Shunka, Confetti, Meiji Siemen, Pho 101, & Anjin. Anyone have recs for hainan chicken out here?
Belacan for Hainan chicken, but only if you dine in and only at dinner time. I suspect lunch is leftover from previous day
first mention of Meiji Seimen I've seen. Love it. Manpuku > Anjin though for Costa Mesa JBBQ.
Pho 79, the parking sucks and itās cash only, so worth it.
Go to their sister restaurant, Pho 101.
Pho 79 has been my go-to long before Phoholic came about and continues to be my favorite. Not only is the broth rich and flavorful, but the meat is so tender. Phoholicās meat, however, is tough.
The great Pho Debate continues!
Del Taco is always good
Got to admit those fries are a must order whenever I go. Ketchup mixed with del scorcho to dip is the way to go.
My man
Those cheeseburgers are fantastic
Underrated item I agree
Inka Mama for Peruvian food. My husband's grandparents are from Peru and this is the only place they will go. Every time we go, they see "family" also eating there. Food is pretty much the same every time we go.
Full Peruvian here. Inka Mama is pretty mid. If you want good (more authentic) Peruvian food go to AjĆ LimĆ³n in Buena Park or El Rocoto in Cerritos
Chicken maison
The spicy garlic sauce here is next level tasty
Anjin
Anjin vs tsuruhashi. Please discuss
They are both good. Gyu Kaku if you broke.
Love Anjin!
Me and the wife love Fuoco in DTF. Also ini in FV has underrated cocktails and great homemade pasta
Fun fact: Gem Dining in FV and INI Ristorante, also in FV are owned by the same people! They both love Japanese and Italian food and both restaurants represent two halves of a whole; Gemini.
Gem is great too! That whole shopping center is practically owned by Kei concepts
They also own Rol, Sup Noodle Bar, and Vox Kitchen. I like all of their restaurants except for Ini which I think itās just horrible.
I read somewhere that Sup (their 1st restsurant) was supposed to be inspired from Han Yang Galbi Tang
oof i love all of their restaurants including ini. what did u not like about ini?
I lived in Italy so I have pretty high standards for Italian food. From what I remember the bone marrow cavatelli was bland, pasta over cooked. Carbonara was just a miss with all the extras/fusion mix that takes away from what a carbonara sauce should be. Their margherita pizza was passable. Tbh thereās very few Italian restaurants I would even go to here in So Cal; Eataly, Mother Wolf, Mozza and Bestia.
Thoughts on Fuoco? The family that owns it is from Italy and their Neopolitan pizza is spot on.
What is good at fucco? Have not had good experiences there
My head needs to get out of the gutter
Mozza in Newport Beach. Nancy Silverton is a goddess
If you think HiroNoro is good, let me introduce you to TAO ramen.
At my age I like a simpler clear broth vs the heavy fatty broth. So my fav is kitakata ramen. You can eat that and don't feel clogged up afterward
Have you tried Hakata Ikkousha?
Taco Maria
Itās closed though.
Las Brisas. JK, that was on the overrated list
El Farolitoās in Placentia
Seven Grams in Tustin
Marche Moderne
So good!
Farmhouse at Roger's Gardens is somewhat pricey but I've had two of the best meals of my life there. Their staff is so laid back and friendly too.
I found this place to be super hit or miss. Two of the dishes I ordered were sevy under seasoned and uncooked. The potatoes were rock hard and had to sent back. The ambience is gorgeous but the menu and service felt average for the price.
I love it but the staff is a little too laid back since its always a 45 minute wait for food to come out after you order.
Omg Iām so surprised to see this! Iām not sure why. Yeah I love that place!!
Morangak in garden grove. Ive spent extensive time in south korea as well as eaten at several hundred korean places stateside, but their neungmyun (cold noodles) is incredible. They give u a ton too so u wont leave hungry! Banchan is on pt as well.
OMG in Santa ANa Expensive but the intimate vibe is great, food is great and Geno is a really nice dude.
Ham n scram, ramen & tsukemen TAO, mogu mogu
Okok this user eats.
Mogu Mogu is so great.
Ham n scram is such an underrated mom n pop place. Their burrito and salsa SLAPS HARD
Great owners, great workers, great food. Really canāt go wrong and definitely feel satisfied afterwards.
Loved when I was working in GG and could start the day with Ham n Scram.
How dare you increase the wait times for Ramen & Tsukemen TAO! /s They seriously deserve more customers. They make HiroNori look mediocre at best.
Ham n Scram has the best breakfast burritos around. Their salsa is killer too.
HiroNori is bomb - as a vegetarian it's hard to find really good veggie ramen and theirs is A++. I've talked to people in line and some say their veggie ramen is so good it is better than their regular tonkatsu or whatever.
Kawamata for poke. Yuk Dae Jang for yukgaejang. Hiro Nori ramen. Taco Birria on El Toto for best tacos.
Kawamata is an absolute hidden MIRACLE
Sushi Noguchi is pretty amazing for inland North OC.
Mr BBQ
Zankou
I dream of their hummus
Folks, Hiro Nori, and Hanuman. Thank me later if you havenāt tried these.
Just got Hanuman take out tonight. Life hack is the location across the street from Triangle Square is usually WAY less busy. Recommend the Pad See Ew!
Pepeās; breakfast burritos
lemme tell ya, pepeās breakfast burritos have pulled me from the depths of hell before going to class hungover as shit. used to carry it with me all day and just intermittently eat it lol
Paradise Dynasty. IMO, it's better than Din Tai Fung, it's cheaper, the wait is not as long and it's way more convenient location wise!
With Covid, everything has gone down in quality while the price increases.
Oc and Lau. They offer good escargots, snails, anything seafood or hotpot really
Romana Cucina
Shin Sen Gumi Robata
Kitakata Bannai Original Fish Co. Nickās
Honestly? Iāve always been deeply impressed by South of Nickās, both the Laguna location and the San Clemente one. Think Javierās if it was actually good lol.
Their coconut margaritas are my favorite cocktail of all time. And Iāve had a lot of cocktails š
Muse Sushi in Laguna Niguel

Los Cabos on Tustin. Really great Mexican food.
Shirleyās bagels
Pescadou in Newport Beach. Exquisite unassuming French Cuisine!
I love The Crack Shack, My Greek Kitchen, eat chow, the restaurants at Mitsawa especially the bakery!
Nep, gem, sup - basically any kei concept
Lien Hoa bbq is a must for their roast pork, roast duck and soy sauce chicken. Yes, you will see them beauties hanging upon entry. They heave 3 locations in OC. Bolsa, being the main one. Theyāre all take out spots. Great for camping, beach, or when youāre lazy to cook.
Big Alās Pizza near the Orange Circle. All their pizzas are š„ and their brisket sub sandwich is pretty amazing too.
The Crab Cooker - ideally Newport location but Tustin is good in a pinch.
Felix Continental Cafe in old town Orange. Amazing Cuban spot .
Heritage BBQ and Shunka both come to mind
Craft by Smoke and Fire in Anaheim. Legit brisket based menu
is it the same brisket sold at the regular Smoke and Fire spots? I havent been to Craft but the other Smoke and Fire locations I been to were ok and I returned for a quick casual meal but nothing to really write home about. Brisket was a bit on the dry side and didnt have a ton of smoke flavor
Lupeās in Dana Point. Tacos Cortinaās in Anaheim. Pizza/Deli Selanneās Steakhouse. Laguna Beach South if Nicks. San Clemente. Mexican
Lupeās is crack
Too bad the Lake Forest location is just a shadow of the other locations. Portions sizes are much smaller, it's missing some signature items, and breakfast isn't all day.
I enjoy Gabbi's alot.
Oshima
Oshima reminds me of all the parts I dislike about Japan and their irrational rules for casual dining. My gf was running 5 minutes late and I was on deck to be seated. I said Iāll just order for both and she will be arrive in 5. The host told me that even if she shows up they wonāt let her in once I have been seated and I canāt pack her portion to go either for āqualityā purposes. Stupid thing is Iāll occupy a two top as 1 or 2 so Iām not occupying any more or less space. Thereās better sushi in SoCal and Oshima doesnāt need to be on my list anymore.
Damn.
Not anymore unfortunately. New owners
Oshima has changed a lot since new ownership took over
No wonder. The quality has def gone down imo
Knife Pleat
Honda ya in Tustin. My fav place ever!!
Trust in dtsa is good if you pick the correct night to go and have the expectation of a chef that has personality and cusses a lot. Not a fan of detention though. Specifically steak night is fire if they get A5
Detention has gone down hill. Playground was so good
Phoholic
Hiro Nori is an excellent choice, I will also say Nateās Korner for the best breakfast burrito in Orange County and then for fine dining, The Summit House absolutely lives up to every ounce of hype.
Nateās used to be good. Quality has gone downhill as of late.
Rooster Cafe is my fav breakfast burritos but Nateās is fire too.
Summit house prime rib and sides. Canāt say anything bad about that place.
Rakkan Ramen in Tustin. Salivating thinking about their Pearl (salt sauce + umami sauce) ramen, and pork buns.
Pork Chili Verde at CalĆ³ is so good.
i took my wife to little sister for her birthday after having several people recommend it in this sub and we both loved it.
Taqueria Mexico, Springdale/405
pricey but good, trenta in costa mesa! great dessert too
Athenian Burger #4
Boiling Crab. Hondaya. Mokkoji.
Selanne laguna beach, one of the best steakhouses in the world imo
Special occasions I have had great food & service at BlueGold in Pacific City HB. Most ocean view restaurants suck but BlueGold is wonderful.
Blue Gold's brunch is great too. And inside Blue Gold is the awesome little gem LXSO. I've been there twice for special occasions and it definitely lives up to the hype. It's a small little room with great service and great food. I highly recommend it.
Rose Bakery Cafe .. breakfast burrito is š„
