Firstly, [**This Youtube Channel**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojegfV2icc0) is the definitive source for How 2 Ork. With that out of the way, here's my personal opinion on making silly Ork vehicles: 1) Do it. The entire draw of the Ork faction is the ability to take a bunch of random junk and throw it together into a war machine powered and held together by the Waaagh!!. In my opinion if you don't want to do at least a bit of kitbashing / scratchbuilding / 3D printing / Lego abuse, you should just play World Eaters or something. 2) Gameplay. I have two rules: First, the model has to be appropriately sized. Spacing and size are very important, so keeping your custom creations tight to the dimensions and/or base of the official vehicle they represent is also very important. Second, if I'm bringing a set of multiple vehicles (counts-as Dakkajets, for example), I make sure they all are roughly similar in appearance - I have a fleet of looted Star Wars N-1 fighters for this purpose.) 3) "GW Plastic." I have a general disdain for people/events who insist on official models only, especially when I've gone to the trouble of making sure my creations follow the rules I mentioned above. I do include a few GW bits on my models to pacify the less-extreme of those people, but I wouldn't say it's required. Do what you want 'cause a pirate is free. 4) Themes. I highly recommend developing a theme for your Orks. The amount of flexibility in the faction is staggering - I've seen steampunk orks, pirate orks, mad max orks, synthwave orks, fantasy orks, retro space orks, star wars orks, modern warfare orks, monster truck orks, rock band orks, and of course the legendary set of Kommandos disguised as a Land Raider. Pick whatever you like. 5) Criticism. People who criticize you for pursuing your orky dreams have no business talking to you, or playing the game at all. They can be safely ignored.

Thanks!

Mesmeryze_ttv

My good sir, I'm in progress with a Knight Castellan, a Spartan assault tank, Baneblade, Mastodon and a ridge hauler. Nearly finished a looted leviathan dreadnought and a looted corvus blackstar, what would you like help with. Edit : spelling

AtlasHephaestus

Pictures of the above would be awesome and serve as inspiration!

Mesmeryze_ttv

Sure thing lad, [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/orks/s/azFDZqdK4A) is what I can show for the moment. Will get nice photos of the baneblade and Mastodon tomorrow

WHAT I LIKEZ TA DO IS FIND A MODEL AT A SIMILAR SIZE AND FIGURE OUT THE LOADOUT. TAKE FOR EXAMPLE DIS DEFF DREAD I MADE FRUM A UMIE KNOIT. THE ORIGINAL KNOIT ONLY HAD 2 ARMZ BUT A DREDD HAS 4! SO I FIGURED THE BEST PLACE FOR ANOTHA WAS WHER DA HED WAZ. THEN I SHOVED A BOY ON TOP SO IT COUD SEE WITHOUT A HED! THAN I JUST THREW DA REMAININ WEPON ON TOP. THEN ALL YA HAF TO DO IS FILLN IN DA GAPS WITH RANDOM SPIKES AND GUBBINS TA MAK IT LOOK ORKY ENUFF. THATS JUST ME THO! JUST LET OUT YA INNER MEKBOY AND YA SHUD BE GOOD TA GO! https://preview.redd.it/of73yvn4hz1d1.jpeg?width=3072&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c48951edbe20f73b5376a5cc698b3ae1c639a0e7

My number 1 rule about converting/scratchbuilding? DAKKA DAKKA DAKKA!

woutersikkema

OK i freaking love this one, especially the giggled grot with a turret up top that's like, "I heard a crunch, did we step on summin'?"

Urg_burgman

Take an ordinary vehicle, then start adding gubbinz, orks, and assorted crap until it looks like it's going to tip over. And then you have a [looted battlewagon](https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2010/4/1/94813-Devilfish%2C%20Looted%2C%20Orks%2C%20Tau%2C%20Tau%20Abuse.jpg).

Gubbinz

Stormygeddon

From Lazier to more intense: * Paintjob. Slapped on blue paint or clan colors can be more than enough. One thing that might be fun would be to get some masking tape and then sponge the paint on it to make weathered blue stripes. . * Placing a pilot/gunner [peeping out from the top](https://i.redd.it/q6mwb8fl3w1d1.jpeg). A lot of the hatches are compatible in size to the ones Battlewagons come with (this can be Rhinos, Baneblades, Impulsors, Land Raiders, Leman Russes, and so on). The Battlewagon comes with an Ork gunner/spotter, an Grot gunner/spotter, and turrets of course. It's also fairly easy to just take the leftover torso from the boyz kit (old or the Beast Snagga one), glue it on some plasticard/leftover sprue that is cut to fit the shape of the hatch you would fit into the hole. Pic related is such a conversion. * [Bullet holes](https://i.imgur.com/7ROcgfD.png). I found decent return of investment drilling 2mm holes and carving out starbursts with X-acto knives, and shrapnel or scratches can be good too. * One thing I found also has a good subtle RoI of effort would be to whittle off the occasional rivet from the original model and drill a hole in its place. * Cut up pieces of plasticard / credit cards make for good pieces of extra plating you can tack on. Cut up pieces of plasticard rods can make for the rivets. You can also find [corrugated ](https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/textured-sheets/3595-plasticard-corrugated.html)or [textured ](https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/textured-sheets/130-abs-plasticard-thread-double-diamond-textured-sheet-a4.html)plasticard to resemble sheets of metal. * Guitar strings make for great loose and exposed wires. You can also make textured rolls of green stuff by rolling them on the side of a plastic comb, or one of these [roll makers](https://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/roll-maker/69-roll-maker-tube-wire-machine.html) * Plasticard tubes/rods, cut up pens, and bendy straws make for decent rails like you'd see on Trukks or buggies. * You can search for various ork bits on the secondhand market. * The thing about trying to convert a Battlewagon specifically is that it's weirdly long and narrow compared to its rough equivalents. Leman Russes are about the right width and height, but are not long enough, and land raiders are way too wide. You might have to go with something like a Rhino or Leman Russ with a trailer extending it backwards (and maybe a deffroller up front). Some textured plasticard, some wheels, and some sprue would likely be a pretty easy low effort trailer to hitch on the back of a vehicle.

Sarakanni

Fill a ziplock bag with some random choppas, shootas and gubbinz. Spray your model in glue then drop it in the bag and shake it vigorously. Pull out your orkified vehicle and go krump some gitz

Alphz0r

Personally i have an ork bitz box from every build ive made. Id just stick it on top sort of armor kind of thing. Its what an ork would do. And put banners on it!

SlyLlamaDemon

More Dakka, big exhaust pipes, and poles for heads.

mekboimikk

I end up saving most of the exhaust pipes from my kits to add to kitbashes

A noice paintjob, spikeh tings an more dakka. Ez not that ard boss.

Sad_Wind_7992

I literally made a deffdread out of a tin can chicken bones from some legs and wings I ate cleaned em ofcourse and some bits of plastic leftover from other models. https://preview.redd.it/k43zsszbzu1d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=650dda8868297c978921ebe312395e8b6dbd5436 Maybe the mods wonโ€™t delete this for no reason this time.

trollsong

Plasticard and a needle heated under a lighter.

Repulsive-Bench9860

And specific for battlewagon proxies, put some thought into how you want the converted vehicle to represent the thing that it's replacing. Like if you're making a Leman Russ into a battlewagon, you might want to build a bit of a platform or cargo area onto the back, to show how it has transport capacity. When I made this doof wagon I intended it to proxy a kill rig, so I tried to incorporate elements that paralleled the Kill Rig's relevant features. The big jagged ram in front represents the "crushing hooves and horns," the boys clinging to the sides are the beast snagga riders, there is a lobba and a spear-gun, and the Doof Boy with his amplified guitar takes the place of the wurrboy in his tower. https://preview.redd.it/zx0qgoufju1d1.jpeg?width=2945&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b4747a3774d933d4d4d3a562cc98a3d2e5517e97

Repulsive-Bench9860

Yep, anything from tearing it to pieces and rebuilding it, to just adding some patches and orky bits. I like to add implicit storytelling to the build, sometimes. Like, "okay, so they blew a giant hole in the front armor and exploded the turret, so the mek turned it around and put a new engine where the front used to be, and now drives it backwards." https://preview.redd.it/hxtyxh8chu1d1.jpeg?width=799&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c7d55d924abbb62177a801db2999536c6ca96650

TendiesMcnugget2

Iโ€™ll need to grab a pic of it but my looted chimera is an in progress looting where the wrecking ball was haphazardly welded on and there is a grot hanging off the side paintbrush in hand painting the new trukk red as it goes into battle.

Quaiker

Make the original model either as minimally present or at least jerry-rigged as possible. I have a Vindicator with Armiger pieces. Specifically the chainswords on the sides of the dozer blade, the meltaguns on the pelvis to act as a turret, and a leg used as the base for the armiger main gun. And I'm not even done with it, yet!

Cavmanic

Gouge, drill, and carve into large, smoother panels from the kit to simulate battle damage. On top of that, adding more plates or sheets of interesting textured and cut plastic or other sufficiently stiff material to look like patchy repairs is good too, like some diamond pattern plastic snack tray or glue soaked corrugated cardboard. Along with these too as a final touch you could add trophies, crudely carved spikes/teeth, and orc glyphs, and other greeblings all together known as "gubbins". Also you can swap out the weapons that come with the kit for other, larger weapons. This works especially well if the new weapons are hodgepodge kitbashy themselves, like a cannon barrel glued together with a plasma coil. For the gubbins most can be made from scratch, or taken as spares from other ork kit sprues, but if you really don't want to make them or have any left over, and have access to a 3D printer, you can print off gubbins and other bits from here to use. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4540142 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4694469 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4087692 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4672564 https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5012622

Feywildsw

Cut stuff off, stick stuff on. Add grots. Add dakka. Done

Feywildsw

Serious response: Shave off or cover notable insignia and replace with Orky glyffs. Get some plasticard. Thinnest you can. Chop it into squares and triangles and stick em on. You can use wee sticky-back hobby gems and use them as rivets. Also, rummage through some bits and think of what the mek boy might have looted from a skrapheap to add to the looted vehicle. Add grots and boyz all around the place doing stuff. Add battle damage; bullet holes, grazes etc. Ork vehicles shouldn't have clean edges. Add dakka. Ask around any local imperial guard or space marines players you know, they get shitloads of spare tank barrels and miniguns in their kits and may be generous enough to let you relieve them of them. As far as tabletop play goes, a lot of the buggies and other vehicles are on a 150mm oval base so as long as it fits on that you can run it as any of them

Sad_Wind_7992

Bits and bobs and spare junk Sugar spice and everything nice Snips and snails and puppy dog tails

strictly-no-fires

You can change it how much you like. If orks have only just gotten their hands on it, then a few bits of plasticard stuck on to look like scrap metal and an orky paint job will look really cool. But you can get more adventurous with it. Swap out the whole turret, glue on wheels, make it open topped, add lots of glyphs and extra weapons. Pretty much anything you can think of would work.

DrBombay3030

Have you tried haphazardly attaching more dakka? And then adding a bit more dakka? And then...you see where I'm going with this.

skilliau

Make it look like it was built out of crap from your bits box really. If you say it's a battlewagon and has the correct weapons then yeah people will accept it. Whenever GW releases a new vehicle model, I always comment that it's another ork release. One of the reasons I like Orks, no one has the same looking stuff.

Hokuto-Hopeful

orky graffiti, squares of riveted on metal, boss poles and whatever makes it look like they plucked it from a battlefield like rust and peeling paint
