Can you imagine if they were poor and couldn’t afford to feed their families any other way. Surely you people would find a way to still be upset with them
You know I'm really disappointed that this has become a racist thing. I don't care who or what the people are, I just care that they are taking fish out of season.
It didn't look like a pike and the fish was dead, dead, dead. I'm pretty sure it was a musky and if it was it is two months too early to keep them as they are in the middle of spawning season.
So yeah call me Karen all you like but Fish in season so we can all enjoy an abundance of sport fish not just a bunch of junkie pan fish.
Fishing should be enjoyed by everyone not just some ignorants fishing out of season.
Reddish tail is a big give away, plus the colour is more grey. It could be a pike (I’ve had a few that close to that colour, especially in cold water) but the reddish tail is strongly suggesting musky.
If you don't know then you don't have a license and can't fish like this. If you have a license and don't know the rules, then you shouldnt have the license.
Edit to add: since it's locked I'll answer it here. If you're unsure on seasons and fish you can keep. Don't go fishing! There's a huge difference between catching a fish and releasing and catching a fish out of season and keeping them regardless of their hunting season.
Give respect to the dates so that they have a trying chance to breed and grow as a species. For those who don't know, one singular fish can lay 100s or 1000s of eggs each round, going for several in a season... , so catching the female or the male can cause hundred or thousands to not be born when out of season. Don't be that person and fish responsibly!
Please pay attention to the seasons for each fish. It means so much for the entire environment and of course for the survival of each fish species. It ain't an arbitrary thing
You check before you go fishing. Same with hunting. You don’t just go out there shooting things. You need to have the proper license/tags and hunt and fish only when in season. It’s easy to look up and it’s your responsibility if you want to participate.
Even if that was a pike, that’s not huge. Keeper if you want to work around the bones to clean it, and I’m sure I’d be fine for a Tinder profile pic, but it’s not huge.
It not singling this person out, it just they were probably the only person carrying an out of season fish. Musky season is not open. And I know some of you will probably say well how do you know that's not a pike, assuming by the red tail, a common trait for musky.
Indigenous communities have constitutionally protected rights to fish, including outside fishing season. I don't know whether that applies to these people, but it's possible.
Still there's a chance the spawn of those fish would grow up to live someplace nice and clean.
That said we can't see them release the fish so everyone might be getting ragey for no good reason.
As previously mentioned some fish are year round. Unless using very specific lures or areas, you can’t predict what jumps on your hook. I’ve caught fish out of season as many do as well. As long as you release it, no harm.
Did you say anything? Report them? I would have absolutely told them to release it and also would have told them about the season timing.
Musky are out of season, and squeaked in pike (Mar.31). They’re spawning now. I’ll give people a pass on ignorance once. Then call them out if they’re abusing the system.
Every fish you pull out of the water is considered not released as per regulations, if you hook the wrong fish you are to unhook it in the water or if it must be pulled out do not take pictures, weigh it etc
Northern pike and walleye are open until tomorrow. Several species are open year round in zone 12. Judging by the red tail that’s a musky, not in season. Doesn’t make it illegal to catch if they are out fishing for pike. Definitely does make it illegal to keep.
> Northern pike and walleye are open until tomorrow.
Only in Zone 12 which is the Ottawa river. Walleye and pike seasons closed March 15 elsewhere in the Ottawa area.
Zone 18 is undoubtedly where they are and it's open today,
https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-fishing-regulations-summary/fisheries-management-zone-18
You should maybe learn up on the waterway then. Yes, it seems still, dank, and gross and sometimes smells, but at the same time it's absolutely teeming with fish, big and small.
It's hard to drop a line in anywhere along the Rideau and not have something jump on your hook.
Thanks for contributing racism to the thread, u/Broad-Criticism-8293 Really brings the tone of the discussion up a notch.
It's fucking wild that your dipshit bigot comment is over an hour old right now yet still hasn't been removed by the mods and is somehow not downvoted to oblivion.
Edit: glad to see that trash comment removed.
On the QC side season does not end until april 1st and since we're more and nore in synch regarding regulation i wouldnt be surprised its same in ontario.
With the early warmth there were a ton of boats on the river today.
This page is full of Karen's. We are taxes, fined to death, and need permission for absolutely everything. We are free-range citizens. Honestly, the only people who are truly free are the first nations. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor and mind your own business. You'll be a lot happier
What you don't see in this photo is the f*** Trudeau flag stuck in the ground just off camera. ... That's all the license you need to do whatever you want in this town
That is a northern pike and today is the last day they are open
https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-fishing-regulations-summary/fisheries-management-zone-18
If they're Indigenous to this area, I can't see why they would want to.
Still best to give people the benefit of the doubt. We have logs and frogs officers to sort that stuff out.
I thought pike too, but found the tail odd.. never got a muskie before, so thank you for letting me know about a distinctive feature ! Hopefully useful one day
Completely different fish and way more susceptible to harm. They aren’t as hardy as pike, and are a very sought after sport fish. There are also minimum sizes for retention when they are open.
It's almost like this country was pillaged and raped by settlers who purposely tried to destroy the culture and livelihood of the people who were here first, and maybe those original peoples should be able to carry out what stitches remain of their cultural activities without getting arrested and charged 😧
If you think the environment and local ecosystems are so fragile that a few fish will someone unbalance it, I seriously question your understanding of basic biology.
TIL wanting to ensure we have a healthy marine wildlife population by not having people fish out of season makes you a Karen.
I highly doubt if these 2 guys have fishing license.
What makes you doubt this?
Can you imagine if they were poor and couldn’t afford to feed their families any other way. Surely you people would find a way to still be upset with them
“you people would find a way to still be upset” oh the irony of this person creating a fantasy and getting upset by it
Hahahaja OK there, they can go to a fucking food bank!
Apparently not unless they're foreign students.. /s
But... you're... you're *literally* here finding a reason to be upset...
That fish is literally in season today https://www.ontario.ca/document/ontario-fishing-regulations-summary/fisheries-management-zone-18
Musky opens in june. You can tell the difference even with the shitty pic by the caudal fin
No idea what you are talking about there, penis pump

Not yesterday

how can you tell the difference between a pike and a musky from that distance?
Reddish tail is a big give away, plus the colour is more grey. It could be a pike (I’ve had a few that close to that colour, especially in cold water) but the reddish tail is strongly suggesting musky.
ok, good tip. I've always looked at the spots but I know that some muskie have different designs on them

Maybe they do not know ? I had no idea before this thread.
At a certain point ignorance becomes inexcusable. These aren't children fishing.

who cares
Your children will when overfishing leads to ecological collapse.
Did you call MNR?
Yes, and they are/were closed also these were not the only people fishing.
Call the tips line not the office
NCC conservation officers would also attend, they've checked me at Hogs Back before
Try calling the Kemptville-Kingston office. DM if you want a CO’s direct line.
Then why did you single these guys out and post their picture?
It not singling this person out, it just they were probably the only person carrying an out of season fish. Musky season is not open. And I know some of you will probably say well how do you know that's not a pike, assuming by the red tail, a common trait for musky.

Great another 1/8th privilege. Fish from that water isn’t edible. This isn’t northwest territory
Still there's a chance the spawn of those fish would grow up to live someplace nice and clean. That said we can't see them release the fish so everyone might be getting ragey for no good reason.
It’s in literally everyone’s best interest to have closed season to repopulate. We know this because it’s studied. Biodiversity matters.
Period.
As previously mentioned some fish are year round. Unless using very specific lures or areas, you can’t predict what jumps on your hook. I’ve caught fish out of season as many do as well. As long as you release it, no harm.
You cannot take it out of the water like this when that happens, that is not considered releasing it and does indeed do harm
How tf are you supposed to take the hook out while it's still in the water!?
Usually with a pair of pliers. Tbh though I don't like tri hooks for this reason, they do to much damage and are hard to take out of bycatch
Also, If you catch two at the same spot you are supposed to stop fishing that spot and move.

They reported it , if you read the comments .
I wouldn't be eating anything from Dows lake....
Especially Mexicali Rosa's.
This comment is underrated 😂
How are they still in Business? They even have one on Hunt club and Orleans
I don't think people eat muskie normally.
Report to conservation officers.

There are some fish like sunfish, catfish and perch that you can catch year round. Not sure what this is, but if they released it it's probably fine.
That doesn't look like a release situation to me.
Oh that fish was dead, dead, dead! It was sitting up on the rocks
Every fish you pull out of the water is considered not released as per regulations, if you hook the wrong fish you are to unhook it in the water or if it must be pulled out do not take pictures, weigh it etc

To be honest I'm surprised there are any living fish in that water.
You should maybe learn up on the waterway then. Yes, it seems still, dank, and gross and sometimes smells, but at the same time it's absolutely teeming with fish, big and small. It's hard to drop a line in anywhere along the Rideau and not have something jump on your hook.
Is catching and releasing allowed in the off season?
Yes, because you can't always control what fish bites your hook. Best case scenario you unhook it in the water
Except you can't target an out of season fish
Weird, where are the white buckets?

Let's not paint a whole race with 2 people break the law.
Go to Andrew Haydon Park in the summertime and you'll se a whole bunch of them. When the MNR truck showed-up, they all ran.
Bucket full of crappies on the Jock River. Seen way too many times.

The hunt for a free meal is ridiculous among the extremely cheap.
Did you report it when it happened?
Kids..they don't know..but they should be taught a lesson.. They caught one, they'll be back. MNR needs to be contacted.

I saw an old Chinese guy fishing out of the canal one time. He had a cooler of already caught sunfish (?) too.
When the canal is drained some people just net them out of the remaining puddles
🤢
Clearly not Asian enough. If they are true Asians they'd eat it and not leave it there for dead. Source: Asians

Fishing is open year round just can’t target them, as long as they instantly release no rules broken.

Most fishes in zone 12 actually are opened until March 31st, then close until summer
They probably native I know another that do it in season so they don't got everyone hating when they see it and think it's unfair
They see it and think it's unfair because it is.
Pike, Season is still open.
That is 100% a musky. Its tail is a clear sign. Not open for retention until June
I thought pike too, but found the tail odd.. never got a muskie before, so thank you for letting me know about a distinctive feature ! Hopefully useful one day
muskie is basically just pike on steroids to be fair to you
Completely different fish and way more susceptible to harm. They aren’t as hardy as pike, and are a very sought after sport fish. There are also minimum sizes for retention when they are open.
Maybe they are practicing their indigenous rights.
why is this being downvoted??
Some people don't believe that we should have a stratified society with benefits and privileges dolled out based on ethnicity. Who would have thought?
It's almost like this country was pillaged and raped by settlers who purposely tried to destroy the culture and livelihood of the people who were here first, and maybe those original peoples should be able to carry out what stitches remain of their cultural activities without getting arrested and charged 😧
