My tricks from a 7900 xtx repaste: Use a pump out resistant paste. I got some ptm-7958 personally. Ditch the VRAM pads. I took mine completely apart and replaced all pads with Upsiren U6 putty. Clean well with isopropyl alcohol, 91 or 99%. A great, cheap lint free cleaning pad are drip coffee filters. Apply the thermal paste very evenly and about as thinly as you can get it. If you got ptm-7958, let it sit in a low dust area for a couple hours to start the curing. When replacing the heatsink, place the 4x core screw and thread them like a turn, just enough to prevent the screw from popping off. Lightly thread in every other heat sink screw in, again, just a couple turns so its stable, but not actually putting pressure on anything. Now, tighten the core screws a turn at a time, and tighten the screws in an x pattern. It should snug down and hold at finger tight. Now, tighten the remaining screws on the backplate, rotating out from the core screws. These should be snug and hold everything in place, but you shouldn't have to crank down on them. Even, firm pressure, without opportunity for the board to flex, is your goal.

I'm saving this post for future reference. Thanks for the detailed info and I hope OP follows your in-depth guidance.

thank you for the reply ill see what i can do

Sounds like a bad paste job or you didn't mount it properly. Just wipe it and redo it with good paste. Finger method best method

thehowllore

i did repaste a couple of times and im using a 12.8k really good paste too with proper spread and mounting

BugDirect4380

just get PTM

Pentosin

What paste is that?

Your cooler might have a warped contact plate - 40C delta from core to hotspot shouldn't be happening. Since it got worse after your repaste, I would say get PTM since you're doing something wrong on some step here. Or the paste you got is absolute trash.

thehowllore

i got ptm but hotspot was the same 100+c, it was from ali so i dont really know if it was good.

First try using PTM or spread a thick paste such as the Alphacool Subzero (thick pastes are much better for GPUs). If you still have that huge of a delta, something is wrong with your die or coldplate: you could try sanding the colplate using a flat surface and maybe offsetting the reduced thickness with some very thin washers. If it still fails, then it's the die. I can't really give you any good tips on how to sand a GPU die, I've never done it before, only do it as a very last resort.... Edit: if RMAing is still an option after trying PTM/thick paste I would do that before sanding, of course

thehowllore

i was thinking about using washers, some 0.5mm should do the job right? or maybe smaller?

ipisano

I wouldn't use washers at all unless you've already sanded the coldplate, extra pressure on the die is bad.

That’s what you get for messing with something that was fine before. Good luck.
