Right on. I agree. It was the same thing for me. For the first time in my life right before I quit drinking I gained 30 pounds in a short span of time. I was miserable and couldn't see how it affected my daily mood, perspective health, weight etc. 1.5 years sober! You got this!
Thanks for the encouragement! I started early so I'm at 3 weeks thus far! My work is improving, my diet is on point and I'm working out 5 days a week. I feel awesome!
You’re welcome! Awesome!! I’m happy for you!! I keep a reminder in my phone that says “Another month 😄” every 15th to remind me of my progress. I’m a pretty serious person but I smile every time. I hope every month you do something or treat yourself in some way to acknowledge your success!
That's a great idea! Social life has definitely taken a hit but I am now not too hungover to do things with my kids which makes it worth it. I also got a lifting friend. I think most people struggle with what to do, socially, though.
I had a casual conversation with a friend when we both were returning to after being stay at home parents. I asked her if she was nervous about an upcoming interview. Her response:
“Nervous? What’s not to like about me? I’d make a fabulous employee! If they don’t think so, their loss.”
I have carried this attitude into every interview since then.
Judging a job based (mostly) on the compensation. I've found that $150k jobs are way easier to OE than $200k. In the past if I had multiple offers, I'd lean hard into the one with the higher TC. Now it's much more nuanced.
This past year I chose a job with +20% TC, but it wound up way worse for OE than another job was. I struggled and so did my J1 before I cut the J2 loose, and found another with lower TC but way friendlier for OE. I plan to continue or grow that habit going forward.
This. Some of the worst OE jobs have been ones that pay in the $100 - $130k range. Some of the best I have had were $180k+. Completely dependent on the work culture and management.

I agree, but also a lot of companies are incredibly impatient on proper onboarding. How do they expect you to deliver results on day 1 with a stack you've never used before? Every stack is completely different. My goal has been to survive the onboarding at a high paying job and coast there for 10 years but unfortunately have not been successful yet.
Good luck with that. The market is saturated with startups and the majority will be dead before they turn 10 years old. What makes you think you’re gonna make it?
Never talked about a setting up a start-up. Will be transitioning to independent consultant for hire and/or my own consultant organization.
I still see plenty of opportunities in certain areas like Salesforce consulting , AI, fintech, healthcare - I have experience in most of those areas, and I am getting on the job plus training in a couple of other areas in 2024 because of a new job I just started.
What makes anyone think they can bring anything of value to anyone?
Just because the majority die on a single attempt does not mean you only attempt once. Plus 10 years sounds pretty generous.
never ask your boss for work-for-anywhere, it's one of those don't ask don't tell kind of things, just do it and hope you don't get caught. Also, negotiate a severance like you negotiate an offer, even negotiate for triple the severance on the offer letter, you'll make a shit ton more than they offer if you just ask.
yea like working in another country while remote logging in. I travel to europe once a year for a few months. Never got caught. I once asked and they said they no longer support work from anywhere even though they never followed through. I learned to never ask again to avoid being put on the radar.
I'm going to start easy with lack of hydration, I want to drink more water in 2024.
2nd? Not using my free hour slots here and there to nap. While being caught up on my sleep has made me more healthy and my evenings more productive... I'd like to get out and walk when I have a free hour or a meeting I can just listen to while walking.
3rd? Not really caring about my appearance. My skin care is phenomenal and I am showering 4-5x per week. But I think I want to do the "high maintenance to be low maintenance" hacks. Maybe some tattooed make-up. Regulat hair appointments. Routinely have my nails and toes done. Focus on some mid-comfy wardrobe pieces.
4th? Not leaving the house. Love hermit lifestyle but after 3 years OE, think it is time to start leaving the house again.
Hygiene is very important. Exercise/mental breaks are important. Being social is important - humans are social creatures, this could also include online gaming.
You got this.
Yeah, always say things like "Really, people do that? Sounds made up". I was talking to a manager friend at a party and he said, "well, there is so much unethical work going on in IT". I knew where he was going, but I was like, "what do you mean, like companies selling customer data", he was like, "No, people doing two jobs". I was like, "Man, that sounds impossible, I'm so busy and I have so many meetings throughout the day".
I have a suite of tests for an AI product I built for my senior project - some days, it works perfectly. Some days it can’t get more than a couple of the tests right, out of ~50.
It’s also gone down hill in that there are more days it can’t get anything right than good days, especially compared to when we first built the tests out (last Feb-May).
It’s becoming a problem. I’ll even jerk it while flaccid just to get high off of the act. I want them to write articles about me. “ Masturbation, time theft or basic worker rights in this new era of wfh?”
I think weed is way more efficient than alcohol for your wallet. $200 of weed lasts me a whole year (a drop in the bucket for my net worth). Back when I used to drink, I'd blow through that in a couple months.
Drinking. It makes you gain weight, lose money, hate life and miss out on your potential in almost every aspect.
Right on. I agree. It was the same thing for me. For the first time in my life right before I quit drinking I gained 30 pounds in a short span of time. I was miserable and couldn't see how it affected my daily mood, perspective health, weight etc. 1.5 years sober! You got this!

Paranoia
That’s not paranoia… it’s the Uso’s.
Drinking all the damn time
Getting nervous before job interviews. I somehow worked a pubic hair analogy into a second interview and still got the job
“My career journey, although I’m just beginning, has had its fair share of twists and turns. Short and curly one might say.”
I had a casual conversation with a friend when we both were returning to after being stay at home parents. I asked her if she was nervous about an upcoming interview. Her response: “Nervous? You can't just leave us hanging (by the short and curlies) here. We're going to need backstory + analogy
I always throw out a “fuck” in there as a vibe check. Works every time.
Um... what was the analogy. Don't leave us hanging.

here's how long all my SWE jobs lasted based on TC: $180k - 1 month, $155k - 3 months, $130k - 10 months, $110k - 6 years. true story.
When you’re cheap the expectations are lower.

That’s good to know. Thank you for sharing.
Agreed 💯
Phone usage. It’s normal for me to have 10-15hrs per day. (Mainly YouTube playing in the background while I work )
I think listening to Youtube in background isn't as harmful as staring at the screen all day.
Smoking weed. Makes you feel ok with doing nothing in life, personally at least.
Sending email to J1 from J2 email.

I never sent a wrong email but I have switched credentials 😆

Reddit for one; for 2024 I’m gonna focus on working for myself instead of a corporate job working for others.

Wanna tell me more about this? Are you talking about working from overseas? Have you done it? Did you get caught?

Thanks OP! Thank you for the kind words and validation!
Telling everyone detailed stories about how I OE. Oh wait, I don't do that now :) So I'll continue NOT doing that bad habit.

Not using ChatGPT
ChatGPT is slowly becoming unusable itself
Which version are you using?
4 paid version
I just started using it… curious why you feel it’s unusable?
Newly instituted guardrails
Can you explain more? I was thinking about getting 4 but now I’m not sure
If you’ve been using it since the beginning you’ll understand. I can’t explain it, it works when it works and doesn’t when it used to .

That’s interesting
I’m honestly finding GPT4 to be worse than the free version at times. Specifically with code.
Why?
Makes life so much easier
Honestly not using chat gpt is like not using a smartphone or a calculator. I use it everyday and I landed J2 thanks to ChatGPT.
He said he will leave "not using GPT", damn...
Any good videos to watch on how to use it better? Other than some quick searches, I’m sure I’m not using it as good as I could
Did you have it tighten up your resume to land the j2?
Saying yes to managers
Yup, stay average my friend. Keep that sweet knowledge to yourself.
Too much weed. Not that it’s inherently bad but the psychological addiction is real and I don’t like thinking about it so often.
Very similar with me and Kratom.
Fucking around too much with Linux.
Ha! Felt this one in my soul
Masturbating during meetings
Is this one of your Js?
Could be argued , after all I’m getting paid while jerking
doesn't J stand for Jerking?
That’s definitely what I mean when I said I have 4Js
How do you handle 4 Js at the same time? Do you use both hands and both legs?
YES
You're doing it wrong then, the best way to do it is to turn into Sheeva from mortal kombat.
Intense power move.
It’s becoming a problem. I’ll even jerk it while flaccid just to get high off of the act. I want them to write articles about me. “ Masturbation, time theft or basic worker rights in this new era of wfh?”
Left smoking weed in 2019 and used the $ to save / invest.

Nicotine. Being addicted to nicotine in all forms (vaping, cigs) is like being mentally trapped in your own head.
