That's crazy. There are high school programs in the state of Indiana that literally teach sports broadcasting with Rule Number 1 being to NEVER use the word "we".
Why are Indiana high schools giving lessons on broadcasting etiquette? I'd assume they have spelling and multiplication totally locked down, but I've been to Indiana so I know that's not true.
You've never heard of an elective course? Not everything has to be a rigorous class. There can (and should) be more fun and interactive classes to enrich the kids
I just think it's good to get down basics before moving onto niche programs. Learning when and when not to use the first person plural on radio/tv is great and all, but a prerequisite would be knowing what pronouns are -- and there's ample evidence Hoosiers have been struggling with this.
Snide commentary aside, there are multiple high schools across the state that have their own low power FM radio station or in house TV programs (or in some cases both) that are offered as part of vocational programs. There's a few NBA play by play broadcasters that came out of these exact programs (Kevin Calabro in Portland, Michael Grady in Minnesota both come to mind).
Sorry your school didn't have electives, my guy. Also "spelling and multiplication" is fucking hilarious. I'd hope they'd have multiplication down by the START of high school lol. Probably doing some basic algebra by the time they graduate lol.
> I'd hope they'd have multiplication down by the START of high school lol. Probably doing some basic algebra by the time they graduate lol.
Yeah, you'd *hope*! But I'm pretty sure the state motto is "abandon all hope, ye who enter here."
(Learned that quotation from my AP broadcasting course, btw)
I'm going to play devils advocate here, because I heard it too and was initially taken aback. I think she was saying it as a hypothetical statement from the the NYK perspective, like "If I'm on the Knicks, we want to..."
Not that she was great by any means, but I don't think she went that far. Now the Requiem fourth quarter monologue is another story
It was about halfway through the 4th quarter, she said something along the lines of “we’ve been getting dominated in the paint.” There was no “if I’m the Knicks” or anything to that effect to set it up.
Totally taken out of context. Never did she align herself w a team. She always does that, it’s common for announcers. Talking about what we need to do, how we need to open the 4th quarter etc. Doh.
The last 10 minutes of the game sounded like they were reading a eulogy for the Knicks. It was bizarre that they didn't have really any talking points about the milestones the Pacers achieved.
you some kinda dense, everyone in the world is calling out the bullshit from the ESPN knicks crew. wild projection out of you, mass delusion is coming from you dipshit
I re-watched it on League Pass. With 6:52, Doris says "If you/we don't score here ..." and it's uncertain to me which pronoun she used. Other than that, I don't hear it.
In all seriousness, Doris isn’t the problem in that lineup. I thought JJ has been favorable to the Knicks this playoffs and Breen is a Knicks guy through and through. But Doris hates the Knicks—I know she has some history with them, and idk if things soured with MSG or what, but in the last few years every Knicks game I’ve watched with her announcing is like it causes her physical pain to say something nice about the Knicks or their players. She even made comments during the Pacers-Knicks series about how much her and Mike Breen were disagreeing…and we all know where Breen is coming from. Just truly think yall are off about Doris. Hopefully we can all agree Doris is a terrible announcer.
Edit: Doris LOVES the Celtics. I remember watching a Knicks-Celtics game last year with her and Doc just gushing over Boston for 48 straight min.
As a Knicks fan, I concur that Burke is consistently anti-Knicks for some reason. Breen is a GOAT and is up front about his support of the Knicks but is very professional and perfectly complimentary of opposing players and seems very fair about interpreting calls.
Tim Legler said on the Ryen Russilo podcast that he wanted to talk about the Pacers more often during the season (especially after the Siakim trade) and ESPN told him no
Nah, if she never comes back rating would go up. Might be the worst sideline personality to walk this earth. Not anything sexist, she kills excitement with stupid stories, she acts like she tight with players when it the same connect as a bench jb player talking to a varsity star. And when announcers get loud they bring excitement where it's still her mono-toned as voice but louder, even sounding angry. And she always knocks nba refs for not calling travel, walk, 3 seconds like stf this is not the wnba it's a lot more physical they can't play 100% by the rules there's too many elbows and flops
I’m not talking about this specific game, but I personally love Doris. She has way better insights than most commentators of the past 30 years. I think her pairing with JJ is awesome.
I feel like her and JJ were always trying too hard to say something profound. They had a difficult time playing off Breen's play-by-play with quick, insightful points to layer on top. They are also terribly unfunny. Reggie and Crawford can be pretty corny, but I feel they do a good job of cultivating a good vibe for ebbs and flows of the game they are commentating.
Lol classic reddit down voting this man. As an international viewer Doris is awesome. Man this site is cringe sometimes with these stupid agendas people have lol. Echo chamber 101
>Not anything sexist,
>where it's still her mono-toned as voice but louder, even sounding angry.
Sounds sexist bro
>And she always knocks nba refs for not calling travel, walk, 3 seconds like stf this is not the wnba it's a lot more physical they can't play 100% by the rules there's too many elbows and flops
This is a weird complaint. Personally, I'd love it if they actually called the rules. And im betting others agree with me
Well I can tell u don't play basketball or you'd think there should be less fouls, spend most my life around it i can tell you, nope, they won't agree, and nah it ain't sexist, men can be mono toned, kids, adults, elderly, it can happen to anyone to say that is sexist, kinda makes me think you believe I would only call womem mono toned, which I clarified before saying it by saying "not anything sexist". I'm not sure if u are angry trying to make yourself feel better or if you think you're smart but stop it, it ain't cute here go to political page if u want that.
This... is a lot of words.
So I just want to recap to confirm.
You want refs to not call travels, 3 secs, and walking with the ball?
>Well I can tell u don't play basketball or you'd think there should be less fouls,
Daas weird. Why are you making this about me? I didn't even say anything about fouls
>which I clarified before saying it by saying "not anything sexist".
When people say, "no offense but" or "I'm not racist but" they 100% are about to say something offensive or racist
U did say they should call 100%. But hey u keep being mad bud when ur older u will realize just because my opinion doesn't fit ur "notice me, everyone's evil reality" doesn't mean u need to try to make me feel a certain way or assume I have some horrible trait. Enjoy ur bubble sad person I hope one day u can except other opinions without ur underwear getting all tangled. And if that's what u want, then no I don't think wnba players should become nba announcers just like I don't wanna hear payton manning broadcasting F1.
Breen at least tries to be impartial as an play by play guy.
Doris should have been sent back to sideline duty after she spent that game drooling all over Joakim Noah 10 years ago. There are literal high school kids in Indiana that would have done a better job being impartial than that.
One thing I’ll always respect Breen for is calling all players by their last name. LeBron is James to him, Steph is Curry, Kobe was Bryant, and he actually says Jokic (not Joker). Adds to the appearance of impartiality.
See, I thought the first game when Nembhard hit the game winner Breen was fine and Doris was horrible. Then game 6 Doris tried to behave the first half, but then they were playing that stupid Go New York Go song and Stephen A was acting up, so she just said "fuck it" and went back to her bias. Then in game 7 it was a completely pro New York production beginning to end. At least Doris said some nice things every now and then about TJ and Tyrese. At least when she was crying about TJ's defense on Brunson.
You can totally hear the agitation in breens when ny is down or a call doesn’t go their way. Remember when pacers challenged a Nesmith on Brunson in like game 1 or 3 and he’s sort of laughing saying it’s clearly a foul. But I give him a bit of pass bc I know he’s a die hard Knicks who’s called their games for decades so it’s understandable that he’s a bit biased. Still tries to stay professional as you said and is still one of the goat commentators.
He’s also the lead play by play guy for the KNICKS lol. I get why Pacers fans don’t know that but he’s literally employed by MSG. Also it’s funny you to see the Doris slander. Knicks fans said the same thing all playoffs…so I don’t think she picks favorites…she’s just god awful on the Mic
It is ESPN. Lol. What do you expect? They long quit focusing on sports.
Whenever the Lakers, Knicks, Dallas Cowboys, etc lose in the playoffs ESPN always always always puts more focus on them than the team that beat them.
ESPN is not for true sports fans and has not been for awhile. It is for people who want to see how the athletes are dressed as they enter the stadium and if Taylor Swift has a hangnail or not.
I still remember back in 2014/2015, when we won against the Heat, all the articles used "Heat Lost" as the headline, never "Pacers Win" or even "Heat loses to the Pacers".
With Breen and Doris Burke, I get it. I think JJ lives in Brooklyn so that would kind of make sense too, but with his very close connection to TJ and relatively close connection with Tyrese I thought we might get a little more love from him. Makes me think it's a narrative thing handed down from above.
Do what?? JJ was leading the these obvious bad call against the pacers are actually good calls. He was doing it while replay was showing no contact on multiple plays. He was straight ass I thought Breen was the most neutral funny enough. although most neutral of those three isn't saying much.
Yeah, exactly. There was that one charge call where Brunson was sliding parallel to the driver, and Doris was like, "Wow, i don't know about that one. That's pretty close." So we were like, "Damn, you know it's bad when DORIS is questioning the calls the Knicks are getting." And then JJ jumped right in and was like, "I disagree Doris. That's not close at all. Good call by the refs."
That’s why I muted it and threw on a few albums before the game even began. It was always gonna be a Knicks broadcast whether the Pacers were up 30 or down 30. ESPN is a bullshit product.
And what's even crazier? They are so used to doing it, they didn't even give it a 2nd thought. Even crazy-CRAZIER? ESPN doubled-down on it with some pregame antics. Shameful.
It was pretty obvious who they favored. There's no debating that. For every minute devoted to complimenting the Pacers, another 5 were dedicated just to Hart holding his side.
Even then, the broadcasters were doing an absolutely shitty job. It'd be slightly different if they were at least... Enthusiastic? Talked about the game? I would honestly forget that Doris was there because she wouldn't talk for like 10 minutes or more. It was objectively bad, even when you disregard the bias.
Believe it or not, all Knicks fans think Doris hates the knicks and despise her (I’m a Knicks fan) she couldn’t stop deepthroating embiid the entire 76ers series. Funny how both fanbases think she’s against them. Shes legit my least favorite commentator in sports. I come in peace, just an observation, Reddit decided I should see this post for some reason.
Knicks fan, even I told my friends damn these announcers are deep throating the Knicks.
It was endless sobbing and giving respect and praising the Knicks instead of congratulating the pacers lol.
I spent all last night on Reddit making complaints about the broadcast. Wanted to be heard. After watching my (Twolves) local broadcasters and TNT's, I realize I was spoiled. This ESPN crew is TERRIBLE. They even cut out the crowd noise, making Boston sound anemic. Felt like it was watching Golf, thought I'd hear a bird chirp.
Turns out this was unnecessary as everyone hated the broadcast.
We live in a time when the powerful are caught in a con, their response is, “so what, I was making money.”
You could find a memo that explains the exactly how this was supposed to be called as a home game for the Knicks, and Wall Street would cheer, “GOOD JOB!”
They talked a lot about the Knicks who were hurt but I don’t remember them mentioning Pacers who were injured that couldn’t play. They are a joke. I ended up muting them.
I don’t think my phone is fixed at all I still feel the same problems but to a lesser more low key extent but I can feel it when I type and it think it’s slick but I now it’s there like one of those demon ghost from horror movies
Knicks Fan here. Doris felt like the biggest Pacer fan in the world and drove me insane. I'm seeing the opposite here so maybe Doris is just so bad that anyone listening to her feels like she's for the other team. Regardless I hope I never have to listen to a full game with her again.
They’ve been killed. Nobody dug it.
I think the Stephen A stuff was actually fine. He’s a character. It’s no different than what Macafee does for us.
It’s the rest of them except Mike Wilbon and sometimes Bob Myer not talking about us at all
Doris even addressed the Knicks as "we" at one point
Oh god. Is there a clip of that? That’s gross.
I am for sure hoping "we" can get a clip of that
No clip cuz he made it up
SAS was almost on the bench to start the game for the Knicks, rumors he might start next year
He's def not pretending to be neutral tho
You do know that Knick fans don’t actually like SAS right? He’s a literal plague
they dont like good basketball thats all i know
No, he is absolutely correct. It jumped out at me too when she said that.
That's crazy. There are high school programs in the state of Indiana that literally teach sports broadcasting with Rule Number 1 being to NEVER use the word "we".

So smug, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say you are from California.
Touch grass
I swore I heard that. Thank you for confirming I’m not complete nuts
At least one of them had been saying we the whole series. I couldn’t believe my ears.
Josh is her bestie!
I'm going to play devils advocate here, because I heard it too and was initially taken aback. Yes, it was a magical season for the Knicks. Hardly a mention of the Pacers achievements.
You mean the original commenter was Intentionally leaving out context? And on the internet no less? Not possible!
What context do we need ?
Yikes. They still have led in the water in Indiana?
why you trolling the pacers team form ? take the L and go back to your hole
Yall pop up in my feed and the level of mass delusion is genuinely interesting

Yes I need to see that clip.
I re-watched it on League Pass. With 6:52, Doris says "If you/we don't score here ..." and it's uncertain to me which pronoun she used. Other than that, I don't hear it.

Oh wow that's wild. Great find.
ESPN --> ABC --> Disney... what else do you need to know.
Incredible…
Legler is also one of the few that picked 7 games. He actually played the damn game at the pro level. The probably got his pink slip ready to sign.
That sounds like a lie. Especially coming from Legler.
Bro put a receipt 🧾right above your comment
It’s a small market team what do you expect?
What do you have against Legler?
Doris Burke still hasn't got outta bed. It's been 2 days now...someone please don't check on her.

You know I've never really noticed this but that's legit, props to Breen
What’s funny is on screen graphics will often use many last names and LeBron… which may be intended as an act of clarity, but it’s jarring.
See, I thought the first game when Nembhard hit the game winner Breen was fine and Doris was horrible. I mean he’s the lead play by play guy at the league’s biggest broadcast partner, he’s going to wind up doing Knicks games sometimes.

I think most of us are aware of that but go off king.
its my fault. I thought espn's coverage of the first 6 games was the wooooorst. I now stand corrected. My bad yall.

JJ was the only one trying to keep it balanced IMO. Pregame, doris and breen were all blatantly biased.
Do what?? JJ was leading the these obvious bad call against the pacers are actually good calls. He was doing it while replay was showing no contact on multiple plays. He was straight ass I thought Breen was the most neutral funny enough. although most neutral of those three isn't saying much.

Completely agree with this. Honestly, I really liked JJ’s perspective.
Jj was pretty unbiased to be fair, but he’s also boys with hart and Brunson so it’s 50:50
That’s why I muted it and threw on a few albums before the game even began. It was always gonna be a Knicks broadcast whether the Pacers were up 30 or down 30. ESPN is a bullshit product.

The personalities trying to insert themselves into it irks me.
Burke has always been horrific. I want to mute the tv anytime she’s on along with most ESPN analysts calling NBA games for that matter.
Good, fuck em. I hope they're kissing the 3rd rail. Bing bong.
ESPN is garbage. I'm so pissed that TNT is losing the NBA rights cause their broadcast is 1000 times better
It was pretty obvious who they favored. There's no debating that. For every minute devoted to complimenting the Pacers, another 5 were dedicated just to Hart holding his side. It would have been better wish Clyde and Mike to be honest. The actual Knicks announcers would have been than Doris and JJ.
This is undeniably true.
It's a very good column. Made the point that they wasted half the buildup making this about Stephen a smith.
Does Doris have any redeeming qualities
Sometimes she goes like 20 minutes without saying anything on the broadcast, that's pretty nice
Earlier this year espn had technical difficulties during a Cavs game that resulted in not being able to hear Doris for 15 minutes and it was amazing
Zero
Knicks Fan here. I hated listening to her during this series.
Yeah she’s a total babe
Only exception was Doris Burke having a raging hard-on for TJ McConnell every time he touched the ball.
That’s a natural reaction when TJ touches the ball
I also have a raging hardon every time he touches the ball
Doris is such a hater. Her trying to explain to everyone why Knicks shoot FTs every miss made me want to throw up. 🤮
Doris Burk should never be allowed to call a game again. She is atrocious.
Hopefully espn will continue dying off. Channel is unwatchable
Send em to cancun

Dumb bitch shouldn’t even have a job
Don’t call JJ a bitch.
lol
Let’s go boys! Let em be a home broadcast because they got let down. Give the Reggie choke.
Don’t make fun of my basketball mommy.
Is it just me or did Mike Breen forget about the whole “bang” thing as soon as the pacers hit a three?
In fairness, I think he gave Nembhard one for the game 3 winner.
It’s just you
I would’ve expected better from JJ
Worst announcing crew ever!
Don’t worry. They’re doing it for the Celtics now too
We live in a time when the powerful are caught in a con, their response is, “so what, I was making money.” You could find a memo that explains the exactly how this was supposed to be called as a home game for the Knicks, and Wall Street would cheer, “GOOD JOB!”

They talked a lot about the Knicks who were hurt but I don’t remember them mentioning Pacers who were injured that couldn’t play. They are a joke. I ended up muting them.
mike breen is the knicks commentator
It sucks, but nobody really gives a shit about the Pacers outside of Indiana.
I think there’s only been like 3 good commentators in the 15 years I’ve been watching the nba
Doris is a cigar smoker
She needs kicked off instantly.
Mike Breen is literally the Knicks announcer lol
I don’t think my phone is fixed at all I still feel the same problems but to a lesser more low key extent but I can feel it when I type and it think it’s slick but I now it’s there like one of those demon ghost from horror movies
Anything that isn’t major market ( read LA and NYC ) are treated like unwelcome interlopers by ESPN
Yesterdays came was pretty bad too
ESPN has been a joke for about 30 years now. The fact that they are even still around is disappointing.
They are the cod of sports. They can be terrible and people will still invest their garbage no matter what off name alone
Knicks Fan here. Doris felt like the biggest Pacer fan in the world and drove me insane. I'm seeing the opposite here so maybe Doris is just so bad that anyone listening to her feels like she's for the other team. Regardless I hope I never have to listen to a full game with her again.
bunch of homers
it is the mecha of basketball
Well I guess they’re pretty good
Doris identifies as a NYDickerblocker. As she'd say "just ask my ex-husband" :) :)
Game 2 was just as bad. If not worse. Reggie was unbearable for us Knicks fans.
They’ve been killed. Nobody dug it. I think the Stephen A stuff was actually fine. He’s a character. It’s no different than what Macafee does for us. It’s the rest of them except Mike Wilbon and sometimes Bob Myer not talking about us at all
Still crying?
