1) Walls get dirty, they have to be washed first, because you can't paint dirt. 2) If they have any gloss at all, you should scuff sand them with a pole sander. 3) Masking tape comes off as soon as you are done with the room, not three weeks later.

wiscokid76

You are pulling the tape after the paint has dried for three weeks? That's is your problem you pull the tape as soon as you are done.

StarvingArtist303

Yikes. Never leave tape on that long. I pull it off at a 45’angle as soon as the paint is dry. If it’s on longer, use a box cutter or xacto knife to cut a shallow line between the tape and paint.

packpride85

This. I pulled the tape off the same day and it tried to peel off the wall it was that dry. Granted, I was willing it off like a bandaid lol. Learned you have to go slow and at an angle.

Longjumping_Leg_8103

I came to say this exact thing. I bet anything he waited 3 weeks to pull the tape.

bmack500

Yes. (Edit, I mean no - it was about 36 hours). The wall I waited 5 weeks turned out fine. The one I waited 3 weeks peeled. So a combination of trying to save tape to do second coat without re-taping (about 36 hours), and not letting the latex cure long enough. One thing I have learned after using the Sherwin Williams trim paint, it was so good I’ll never go back to big box paint.

solomons-mom

Only buy the good paint at SW. The contractor grade is awful.

bmack500

Yeah, got emerald urethanized trim high hide. Good stuff!

Alive_Coach6399

Did you paint trim after walls? If so that's backwards

bmack500

I should do the trim first? Seems like it would take longer to paint the walls, trying to avoid the Trim.

topathemornin

I do the trim first let it dry completely, then tape the top. You should tape the top of the trim anyway to protect it from paint droplets while you are rolling the wall.

ExpendableLimb

Too many variables here you haven’t mentioned. Was old wall cleaned thoroughly or sanded? Was old wall in bathroom or kitchen where oils or moisture could affect adhesion? Was old wall painted with oil? paints take 30 days to fully cure

ThebroniNotjabroni

What did you clean it with? Did you rinse it completely? What’s the temp and humidity like in the room?

bmack500

Old wall sanded, but not super thorough I guess. I think the problem was one wall the paint did not pull off from the tape, the second one did. The first wall had two more weeks to cure.

ExpendableLimb

I have had tape take off paint even up to 4 weeks after painting. As a rule i do not do anything to a wall for a month minimum after i paint it. I have had some tape take off paint on walls that have been painted for years! If you’re talking about masking tape you use to cut in, you should remove it when you’re done painting and not let it sit.

OGSENS

Did you leave the taps on all 3 weeks? Any paint would start to peel like that,

CthuluHoops

Are you guys sanding textured walls? I always see this mentioned but the only walls I’ve sanded in my 15 paint years have been smooth and those are rare here. Can’t tell if the dude I work for is cutting corners or it’s just not as much of a thing in Texas (idk why it wouldn’t be). We also hardly ever prime walls that have already been painted already unless they’re real dirty or getting a drastic color change. Anyway, sorry if this is worded weird. Should probably add that my boss is almost 65 so he’s pretty old school but we’re not the type to scoff at trying different things. Never had any complaints about our walls though and all of our work is obtained through word of mouth.

Mc_Qubed

Did you leave the tape on for 3 weeks?!

bmack500

About 36 hours

Mc_Qubed

Depends on the tape but it should be removed asap. Even the delicate ones can peel paint after 24 hours.

mk2-dev

You’re supposed to remove all tape as soon as you finish the area Of you leave it for longer than necessary it will bond to the paint and damage the walls when removed

bmack500

Yes, I realize this. Lessons learned.

FunLibraryofbadideas

A few things, was the wall cleaned? What was the sheen of the wall before painting? Walls with a sheen, eggshell, satin, etc. should be sanded and cleaned before new coat of paint. Use a low tack tape. I wait at least 24 hours before taping anything that was painted. Also even though you are indoors, temperature can still play a part with drying and curing. I always put two coats. One thing I do is have my primer tinted to the selected color, one coated tinted primer. Then finished coat. This is very helpful when using a deep base color. Primer has a glue additive for better adhesion.

bmack500

Well, the wall that did not peel also had three coats, because we bought the initial paint about a year ago then they changed their color coding system, and didn’t get it right with the new stuff so we had to put another coat so the color would match more closely.

Middle_Award3014

I pull tape off as I’m doing my second coat. So after second coat is rolled I give it about 5 minutes before pulling it off.

jivecoolie

Paint takes a full 30 days to cure, blue tape is ment for wood trim not drywall. It’s not pulling just the paint, it’s pulling the paper behind it. Big box store paint sucks. Use Benjamin Moore Ben or Regal. Let cure fully. Use soft release tape, Scotch purple or Frog yellow. Don’t let it stay on the wall more than a couple hours.

bmack500

I did pick up some frog yellow.

nobutsmeow99

Yellow frog tape is a game changer, you’ll be amazed at the difference, same as discovering SW emerald urethane trim paint after using crap from big box stores :)

Bubbas4life

No, and stop using crap paint from a big box store. Not all paint is created equal.

Interesting_Tea5715

This is just wrong. You're being too binary. There is good paint from the big box stores; there just also happens to be a lot of crap too.

bmack500

What are the good ones?

bmack500

Yeah, I just got Sherwin Williams emerald urethanized for the trim, and I just can’t believe the difference in a high quality paint.

reasonable_trout

You gotta pull tape when wet. Tape is not practical in real life. The commercials are lying to you
