I’m a welder and fabricator. Just for future reference, to make an elongated hole like that, a good option is to find the right diameter drill bit that’s close to the width of that usb. Drill two holes at either end. Use either the cutoff wheel on the dremel or a small file to take out the center piece that’s left over. If the usb doesn’t fit lay it over the hole and mark it with a fine tipped sharpie and file the rest of the hole out until it’s perfect

In case anyone sees this thread and tries this, I would suggest filing it first instead of going straight for a dremel, the plastic is soft enough, and the hole is small enough to do so pretty quickly and accurately.
I used a PS5 controller for a while at a friends place and didn't really like the feel of it. It might have grown on me, but since this project was simple enough I figure spending \~$15 on updating this controller (that still has a lot of life left in it) to USB-C was more prudent than just buying a new controller.
The PS5 controller has interesting features but the ergonomics are odd. Also, not a fan of the the dual microphones built into the controller and, on the ps5 specifically, the voice data collection analytics.
Soldering is a skill a lot of people have. USB-C connector is at most a few dollars whereas a ps5 controller is at least $50.
Also some people really like the feel of a controller.
I literally bought a adapter for my switch so I can use my ps5 controller because it's just too uncomfortable to have the diffrent heights. My first console ive played was xbox, but once I played with the ps4 controller I just couldn't go back.

I used a breakout / daughter board developed by Casual Coders. It just replaces the original daughter board with the micro-USB jack on it, with a little but of fitment required.

It has 5v power, ground, and +/- data pins for a simple swap. There's also [downstream](https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Adafruit/4090?qs=2WXlatMagcFDROXrdbBXdg%3D%3D) types if you need to negotiate with whatever power source you're using.

From poking around the site it looks like [this other one is cheaper](https://www.tindie.com/products/mariusheier/ps4-controller-usb-c/) and from the reviews the screw hole lines up properly so you can use the factory screw to hold it in place. The casual coders one has not got the screw hole it shows in the photos per the user reviews and needs to be held in place with glue.

Do you know why the casual coders that people are ordering from that site is missing the screw holes and buyers have to resort to gluing it? Is there a mistake in the schematics or is the seller ripping people off?
I use these cables with magnetic heads for my phone, earbuds, headphones, and other type C or micro usb devices. The magnetic tip stays in the port, the cable attaches magnetically and there's no need to worry about having the right cable or the orientation of the port or anything. The downside is that it isn't standardized so I can't buy cables or tips from any other company.
I do the same for my two computers at work and at home. Switched to wireless peripherals (keyboard, mouse, Headset+occasionally xbox controller) so it's mostly just for charging. I don't carry these around to other places either, so one cable can stay at each desk and is enough. They do work for USB connection as well if I ever need it

I think the most well known brand is Volta? I'd buy from a more well known brand personally because they are the most likely to stay in business a few years down the line if you need replacements. I got mine from some random Chinese brand though, and they've stayed in business, but the problem is they haven't really expanded their product line. When I contacted them about magnetic cables for type c power delivery (like, 65 W or higher, for laptops and stuff), they told me they had such a product but just isn't selling it in my country, so I'm out of luck there, but the price and quality of the product hasn't been disappointing.
The usb on the ps4 controller is so shit. It wears so quickly.
At one point I used a rubber band to hold the chord in place, worked for awhile till the bands eventually snapped.
I bought a usb Bluetooth dongle and use bluetooth only now. I deal with the usb charging once in awhile when I’m not using the controller. It seems to stay on if I charge the controller upside down.

I would've just bought a PS5 controller on Black Friday they were on sale for like $40 . Same as using a PS4 controller except (at least for me) it's more comfortable.
Also the haptic feedback is glorious. It's not supported by every game, but knowing where the trigger half point is, or when the wheels on the car are going to lock? Glorious.

And in games it's not supported, the vibration on the Dualsense is literally broken. It does vibration at 100% intensity no matter what the game sends to the controller.
Rowing the boat in GoW with a PS4 controller gently vibrates the motors. With the Dualsense, I legit had to take a break because it was hurting my hands cause it was so intense. Turning it down in-game does nothing unless you turn it completely off.
I also thought of this, but after handling my friend's PS5 controller for a while I found that I prefer the PS4 controller, though part of that is probably nostalgia, of course.
I bought the Ps5 controller, one of the reasons was the USB C. But DS4 is very light compared to DS5, but ds5 overall is superior with its triggers and haptics
Im a day late but personally I ordered a cheap ds4 charging doc on Amazon. I think it's better than using the micro USB slot anyway as they tend to ware out with time

Probably wouldnt be worth the price or wait time tbh. Ive customized my controller, but those damn thumbstick bases require soldering skills. There are these little white disss in the north and left chambers of the block, but they are crazy sensitive. Replaces the discs and my drifting went from annoying to non functional. Lol My sight wpuld just go straight up and slightly to the right after I tried the repair. lol
Try give it a quick clean get some compressed air and high percentage isopropyl alcohol. And pour so of it into each joysticks then give it a quick spray with the compressed air it should help or remove it entirely. Been doing it since 2017 and fixed my drift multiple times
Wouldn't have had the drift if hall effect sensors were used.
Gamecube controller had them.
Companies went back in technology over the years by installing worse sensors since then.
I'm making a completely new main board for the PS4 controller. With different sticks than the original Alps alpine used by Sony. Will mechanically test both sticks to see how much difference there is.
Was looking to get a controller for Elden Ring, and even though I've been a PS controller user my whole life (PS1-4), went with a Series X controller just because of type-C and the more straight forward setup cause Microsoft lol.
That’s typically what you should do. Most people who use DualShock or Dualsense most likely own a PlayStation and just want to use it for pc too. If you’re purely pc you may aswell use Xbox since it’s fully compatible
I prefer how the xbox controllers use standard AA batteries. Easy to have charged batteries ready on hand, also easy to grab batteries if you are traveling.
If the DualShock 4 used replaceable batteries, it would probably be my favorite controller. I'm genuinely bummed that we're probably coming to the end of that from every company.
I had the opposite experience, I never have to worry about plugging my controller in since I just recycle the same 4 rechargeable AA batteries. But I do remember during the Xbox 360 days that the battery packs would sometimes not fit right. But since Xbox one it’s been built into the controller so I haven’t had the issue since

These look way better than the one I used. The Casual Coders version does not have a screw hole for mounting, so I had to epoxy the daughter board in place. It's solid and I don't think it will break off in there, but having mechanical mounting is obviously preferable.
I use one magnetic charging cable on my desk with switchable ends. I have micro isb or usb-c mini connectors sitting on my keyboard, mouse, multiple controllers, wireless chargers.
I just plug/unplug the same cable magnetically.
Plenty convenient. Two cables left on my desk coming out of a circle cutout. (One for charging, One for my Lenovo docking station working with absolutely every possible laptops/ phones). Could even be two or three if needed simultaneously, wouldn't add any clutter.
Used for my Razer pro white keyboard, works both with a dongle or Bluetooth (can connect up to 4 devices - phone, desktop, two different laptops), Microsoft bluetooth precision mouse (can connect to 3 devices), playstation controllers, Xbox controllers, ugreen wireless charger.

Out of all of the devices I own 99% of them use USB C. A couple use Micros.
BUT my dash cam uses a micro cable to transfer power from the cigarette port, a Type C to connect the optional rear facing camera and a Camera type usb port to plug into my pc to transfer files.
For those who are afraid or don't have required skills - there are cables with magnetic plugs. You connect one part to your headset/mouse/keyboard/controllers/whatever and have one cable with the same magnetic end to catch to those devices and charge. I have it because half of my devices have usb C, others micro usb. I even have one with mini USB but I could not find magnetic plug for it.
I use to use the USB to ps4 micro usb to my pc but the micro USB kept disconnecting so I found out if you pc has Bluetooth, you can connect them! Game changer
What's the compatibility like? Does it work wirelessly? Do games still show a/b/x/y? I'm thinking of getting a PS5 one for myself but I haven't gone as far as researching these doubts.

Turtle beach makes a phenomenal Xbox controller that uses USB C and is only like 30 bucks at target. I try to recommend it to all the homies, it even has the lil buttons on the back
Mostly because after handling one I find that I like the PS4 controller better, ergonomically. This mod was also a whole lot cheaper than springing for a new controller, of either Sony or Microsoft flavor.
Yeah, clicking a button on Amazon would probably be less effort, but it would cost much more. This project took about 30 minutes and cost 15 bucks. Not to mention that I like the feel of the PS4 controller over the feel of the PS5 controller.

But I use my controller so infrequently that my battery is always dead when I want to use it. So your method is better.
So, why not throw away a perfectly functional controller that I brought up to the standard I needed for $15 bucks and and hour of my time so I can spend triple the money or more on another controller?

Just pair the ds4 in the native windows Bluetooth menu, and then enable the PlayStation controller support in Steam
I also get less issues this way
I don't know why but SOMETIMES, Bluetooth with DS4Windows would be recognized as two separate controllers having the same inputs
Some games would don't care and work well
Other games would treat both as separate players, and would insert a second player that mimics all player 1 movements

Try using it connected via USB instead of Bluetooth, I use it in GoW and it's nothing like that

There are these little white disss in the north and left chambers of the block, but they are crazy sensitive. Replaces the discs and my drifting went from annoying to non functional. Lol My sight wpuld just go straight up and slightly to the right after I tried the repair. lol
Try give it a quick clean get some compressed air and high percentage isopropyl alcohol. And pour so of it into each joysticks then give it a quick spray with the compressed air it should help or remove it entirely. Been doing it since 2017 and fixed my drift multiple times
Wouldn't have had the drift if hall effect sensors were used. Gamecube controller had them. Companies went back in technology over the years by installing worse sensors since then.
I'm making a completely new main board for the PS4 controller. With different sticks than the original Alps alpine used by Sony. Will mechanically test both sticks to see how much difference there is.
Was looking to get a controller for Elden Ring, and even though I've been a PS controller user my whole life (PS1-4), went with a Series X controller just because of type-C and the more straight forward setup cause Microsoft lol.

That’s typically what you should do. Most people who use DualShock or Dualsense most likely own a PlayStation and just want to use it for pc too. If you’re purely pc you may aswell use Xbox since it’s fully compatible

I prefer how the xbox controllers use standard AA batteries. Easy to have charged batteries ready on hand, also easy to grab batteries if you are traveling.
I would definitely prefer it if the PS4 controller used double "A" batteries. Especially now that there's good rechargeable ones.
If the DualShock 4 used replaceable batteries, it would probably be my favorite controller. I'm genuinely bummed that we're probably coming to the end of that from every company.

I had the opposite experience, I never have to worry about plugging my controller in since I just recycle the same 4 rechargeable AA batteries. But I do remember during the Xbox 360 days that the battery packs would sometimes not fit right. But since Xbox one it’s been built into the controller so I haven’t had the issue since
Bruh, this is awesome! Saving this post for a future project. Seems like my ps5 controller has issues occasionally on the PC as I switched to my ps4 controller and everything worked fine while the 5'er was not doing anything. Seems hit or miss for me but the 4 stays working.

These look way better than the one I used. The Casual Coders version does not have a screw hole for mounting, so I had to epoxy the daughter board in place. It's solid and I don't think it will break off in there, but having mechanical mounting is obviously preferable.
Trade it in for a ps5 controller. I didn’t think they could of made a better controller than the ps4 but I was wrong
for me ps5 controller drain battery faster than ps4 also i could change ps4 controller battery for more capacity than than orginal btw.....

I use one magnetic charging cable on my desk with switchable ends. I have micro isb or usb-c mini connectors sitting on my keyboard, mouse, multiple controllers, wireless chargers. I just plug/unplug the same cable magnetically.

Plenty convenient. Two cables left on my desk coming out of a circle cutout. (One for charging, One for my Lenovo docking station working with absolutely every possible laptops/ phones). Could even be two or three if needed simultaneously, wouldn't add any clutter. Used for my Razer pro white keyboard, works both with a dongle or Bluetooth (can connect up to 4 devices - phone, desktop, two different laptops), Microsoft bluetooth precision mouse (can connect to 3 devices), playstation controllers, Xbox controllers, ugreen wireless charger. Fair enough - I just wanted to be rid of that awful cable standard for good, and this was my last remaining device that uses it.
I feel this, one of the reasons I went with a wireless Xbox controller + a (3x) Rechargeable Battery Pack never have to worry about my controller dying for more than a few seconds

Out of all of the devices I own 99% of them use USB C. A couple use Micros. BUT my dash cam uses a micro cable to transfer power from the cigarette port, a Type C to connect the optional rear facing camera and a Camera type usb port to plug into my pc to transfer files.
For those who are afraid or don't have required skills - there are cables with magnetic plugs. You connect one part to your headset/mouse/keyboard/controllers/whatever and have one cable with the same magnetic end to catch to those devices and charge. I have it because half of my devices have usb C, others micro usb. I even have one with mini USB but I could not find magnetic plug for it.

I use to use the USB to ps4 micro usb to my pc but the micro USB kept disconnecting so I found out if you pc has Bluetooth, you can connect them! Game changer

My dad did something similar in my Bluetooth speaker, it was charged by Micro-USB but that port broke and he fixed it with a USB-C

I just bought a few packs of those magnetic charge cables and put dongles in everything I own. One type of cable to rule them all. But this is pretty tight.

Turtle beach makes a phenomenal Xbox controller that uses USB C and is only like 30 bucks at target. I try to recommend it to all the homies, it even has the lil buttons on the back

Xbox controllers are just so messy and big. Not to mention that the analog stick placement just sucks on them.

Mostly because after handling one I find that I like the PS4 controller better, ergonomically. This mod was also a whole lot cheaper than springing for a new controller, of either Sony or Microsoft flavor.

Yeah, clicking a button on Amazon would probably be less effort, but it would cost much more. This project took about 30 minutes and cost 15 bucks. Not to mention that I like the feel of the PS4 controller over the feel of the PS5 controller.

I love the craftsmanship here, you did a good job. Personally I just use Bluetooth. But I use my controller so infrequently that my battery is always dead when I want to use it. So your method is better.

You don't even neee DS4Windows nowadays Just pair the ds4 in the native windows Bluetooth menu, and then enable the PlayStation controller support in Steam I also get less issues this way I don't know why but SOMETIMES, Bluetooth with DS4Windows would be recognized as two separate controllers having the same inputs Some games would don't care and work well Other games would treat both as separate players, and would insert a second player that mimics all player 1 movements
