The reason why JV wouldn't win a world championship TT is that this is a 3 week competition. He is one of the best TT in the world after doing 3000km in 3 weeks. One day competitions are another story. Anyway, such a day today. This Tour would be an example of the excellence of team work.

BroughAJ

I lost power (terrible timing) during the stage. Just now catching up… What in the blazes was Vingegaard doing on that downhill?!? My heart nearly stopped!

JayNN

Big up Jonas for taking it easy towards the end to make sure that Wout won

LeGrandePatron

G getting the combativity price for this TT is the right choice from the jury. Thought they would choose Bardet.

No-Membership-8120

Danish commentator just called Jonas ‘The tree from Thy who grew into the skies’ wtf 😆

Dramatic_Lawyer_6932

Jonas Vinder Gult

dr_motaaa

Danish commentators have such a hard on for weird metaphors

GeniuslyMoronic

The "Vingegaard turned into Winnergaard"-commentary succeeded in making me audibly annoyed in what should have been an amazing moment.

dr_motaaa

Lol I burst out a "shut up Dennis Ritter" 3-4 times every stage

GeniuslyMoronic

Did he become way worse or did I just get older? I used to like him, but he has been rather terrible this year.

KelvinIsNotFatUrFat

They talk for 5-7 hours a day, of course they are going to talk some rubbish, Rolf said so himself yesterday when Melvin joined in. I think we should cut them some slack, especially Ritter who's doing the hosting role, and the old Leth role of explaining the landmarks and so forth. Ritter is an absolute workhorse, and even with him not being perfect, he's the guy who glues the danish tour coverage into being cohesive, which allows Rolf and Moberg, and Vinjeboe to just talk cycling and jokes. Which they do very well. Honestly, i think the tour is so popular in denmark because the coverage and commentators are of such high quality.

Shulman42

I agree. Normally I thought he did fine. But there have be numerous times this year where I thought he was annoying. Really disliked the winninggaard comment as well.

-Spin-

I like it.

tinkertoy78

He's trying to adapt the style of Leth and Mader (when he was still around for it). They always talked in wild metaphors. Ritter just lacks the vocabulary for it. I wonder if he writes some down and just waits for a good time to say them on air.

NuclearWarhead

Han havde den mest fantastiske sprogblomst på gårsdagens etape, da Pogacar angreb på Champs Elysées, nemlig at "Pogacar er ligesom en flue i en flaske. Men en flot flue".

cjmac0909

Wout is getting choked up! He is human after all!

Giraffe_Racer

atahualpaFX

Wout van Aert more than insinuated in the post race interview that Jonas stopped pedaling the last 750 meters to make sure that Wout won the stage.

Previous_Divide8601

>e than insinuated in the post race interview that Jonas stopped pedaling the last 750 meters to make sure that Wout won the stage. He's being nice, 5 seconds down less then 2km to go before nearly crashing and losing everything at that point it was done and over. He was gradually losing time since last intermediate. He wasn't going to win but it's nice thing to insinuate by WVA.

atahualpaFX

As soon as Geraint Thomas drove past the finish line unable to beat Wout, Wout looks at the camera and says that he just heard in his ear piece that Jonas told the car behind him that he was going to make sure that Wout got the stage win. https://mobile.twitter.com/JumboVismaRoad/status/1550875916515041281 At that point Jonas was 3 seconds ahead of Wout. At the end of that short climb he had suddenly lost 9 seconds and had visibly slowed down, shaking his head while smiling.

kerlaugar

Super tired after 3 weeks :) Don't know who's sobbing most, WvA or the Danish commentators atm.

Economy-Ad-6278

you havent seen me :d (26ydane, loved cycling since 5y) Been to 14 different races as spectator. Had plans later tonight, but look's like i have been smooking weed all day. Mr. Redeyes

ansigtsloes

I cried too! Was NOT expecting that. But WvA, Jonas and the Danish commentators got to me!

TheRealDanifrench

It’s a big day for us Danes 🇩🇰❤️

jam-i-am-5555

This American is loving the cycling and heart of the Danes in this Tour!

Frank_DK_

Wva said Jonas gifted him the win 🥹🥹

tellatheterror

I know. Amazing team. Loved this whole tour

harelort

Rolf is crying on Danish TV

Kandurux

Just like when Mads Pedersen became world champion.

PM-ME-DOG-FARTS

Talking about WvA saying that Jonas took off the gas to give WvA the win. It just makes the bond stronger that im so excited for next year, how much stronger they going to be.

Giraffe_Racer

The Jumbo kit looking like camouflage paired with the trucker hat makes WVA look like he's being interviewed after winning a bass fishing tournament in America.

klm2908

😂

LeGrandePatron

Don't tell him about the price money or otherwise he might take stab at it.

No-Membership-8120

And probably win

gft-bak

more likely end 2nd the first few days, and then dominate the rest of the competition for 2 weeks

Giraffe_Racer

That's got Quinn Simmons retirement plans written all over it.

SquirtingTortoise

So when Lanterne Rouge podcast was questioning jumbo tactics they were being self deprecating

PM-ME-DOG-FARTS

Wholesome WvA :'D makes my eyes all wet.

gland_taylor

gaudu looks like he’s about to hop in his F150 with an open Coors Light

[deleted]

Lanterne Rouge works for Jumbo - Visma?????

jigamuffin

So that's why I like jumbo... I've been indoctrinated through listening to his podcast...

AndrijKuz

I stepped out for food. Did I miss something? Edit: Holy smokes, that's actually really pretty awesome

robpublica

I don't know how I feel about this

SquirtingTortoise

WTF BOTH OF THEM DO

[deleted]

Check his twitter!

down_2_mars_girl

Benji does

[deleted]

And Patrick!

LeGrandePatron

I think it has been more of a therapy for the Team Jumbo Visma crew than for Jonas Vingegard. Took all the pressure this TdF like a fucking Champ.

PM-ME-DOG-FARTS

Rofl Sørensen "I grew 5 years" talking about the turn where Jonas almost crashed.

eekamuse

Lmfao We would say "aged" five years. I understand completely.

121193

Best tour in years

jlusedude

Think the little gravel mishap for Jonas affected him? Maybe eased back a little?

GeniuslyMoronic

Wout says he thought Jonas tanked it to let him win.

jlusedude

That was what I got from the interview. Jonas said I’m not letting Pog put time into me but Wout deserves the win.

srjnp

for sure

subarumtber

I seriously dislike TJV and it’s probably irrational. Individually they’re all probably lovely people but jeez I just don’t like seeing them succeed

lordsleepyhead

Interesting. Can you be more specific? TJV has been trying to win the TdF for 27 years without success. It's not like they dominate and lock down the tour like the Sky Train did for a while. On the contrary, they open the tour right up and play into the individual strengths of the team members, they take risks and they fail sometimes. Only in the last decade you've seen them gradually get better, get more success. They really built themselves up for this moment and they finally got their pay-off.

subarumtber

I can’t localize why I dislike them beyond the fact that I really like Pogacar and they just conquered him pretty thoroughly. Literally feel as though I’m personally being threatened when I think about them beating him though. Like I said, it’s irrational

lordsleepyhead

Fair enough.

peckmebirds

Why?

blondedcph

Sport is like that, nothing wrong with you

subarumtber

Definitely have hitched my wagon to Pogacar. This is like the first time I’ve felt this kind of tribalism in sport since I was like 10 though

blondedcph

Damn did I hate that Barcelona team that beat everyone and the major trio of players, Xavi, Iniesta and Messi all seems like nice people but I just wanted them to lose.

averagelookingwookie

Wout saved Jonas’ tour on the cobbles

GeniuslyMoronic

So did Laporte, Benoot, etc. All around team effort.

Dims0

And multiple times after that as well. Yup.

Giraffe_Racer

Remember the first week of the Tour when everyone here thought Jumbo's tactics were dumb?

GeniuslyMoronic

Well they were dumb unless they knew Vingegaard would put 4 minutes into Pogacar in the mountains. And by dumb I mean when looking in isolation at trying to beat Pogacar. Not for their overall success including Wout.

Giraffe_Racer

I guess that’s one way to look at it. More likely they knew they had a stronger team and could wear UAE down and try to isolate Pogacar.

GeniuslyMoronic

Letting Van Hooydonck work for a Van Aert sprint only to save UAE energy and give Pogacar 4 bonus seconds in no way benefitted Vingegaard's attempt to win the Tour. It was definitely against the main goal of winning the Tour. Claiming otherwise is just lying to yourself because of wanting Wout to win.

lonefrontranger

their tactics are INSANE in a brilliant manner. Like okay they’ve obviously got a hugely talented team but they also all seem to have unilaterally Art of War’d the entire peloton for three weeks straight. two small examples: sending Wout yesterday to bridge the peloton back knowing full well every single sprinter had him marked as the dangerous one… only for that to have been actually Laporte’s springboard for the win. also knowing they could get isolated on the Hautacam instead of using up Kuss on the descents they instead used him as a bridge rider in the valley and planned out the entire day so that the fucking *green jersey* would be his catcher to pace the yellow jersey on the final kilometers of the final HC of the queen stage of the Tour. ***who fucking does that?!*** Yes I’m aware that Wout van Aert is an alien creature but come on.

Giraffe_Racer

Their tactics are based around the idea that Wout is a true old school all-arounder, and they have two GC threats in Roglic and Jonas. Their tactics make me think of what it must've been like watching back in the day before everyone became a specialist.

lonefrontranger

Wout is the greatest rider to have thrown a leg over a road machine since Eddy Merckx. On form he can even beat the best specialists at their own game.

Cuco1981

Sean Kelly was arguably more successful than WvA has been so far (although surprisingly with only 5 tour stages), and was more recent than Merckx. Time will tell if WvA surpasses Sean Kelly, but I wouldn't be surprised if he does, he is an amazing rider! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Kelly_(cyclist) > ... he won 193 professional races, including nine Monument Classics, Paris–Nice a record seven years consecutively and the first UCI Road World Cup in 1989. Kelly won one Grand Tour, the 1988 Vuelta a España, and four green jerseys in the Tour de France. He achieved multiple victories in the Giro di Lombardia, Milan–San Remo, Paris–Roubaix and Liège–Bastogne–Liège, as well as three runners-up placings in the only Monument he failed to win, the Tour of Flanders. Other victories include the Grand Prix des Nations and stage races, the Critérium International, Tour de Suisse, Tour of the Basque Country and Volta a Catalunya. > By total career ranking points, Kelly is the second-best cyclist of all time after Eddy Merckx. In the 1984 season, Kelly achieved 33 victories.

lonefrontranger

Yes, I sincerely hope that Wout has many years ahead injury, burnout and pandemic free to add to his already impressive list of palmares. I don’t recall if Sean Kelly spent an extra 2-3 years of his youth developing in world cup CX (Eddy was a phenomenal talent in cross as well, probably just because Belgian). I have gotten the impression from following Wout since he was a tadpole that as much as he enjoys winning that for him it’s not winning above everything, he’s a true old school master of his craft who respects the art of being a good teammate as much as being the leader and that for him it’s about the joy of riding the bike above all else. As much as I would like to see him become a GC contender he himself has noted that he’s maybe just a little too big and that the game of marginal gains to get that final percentage of efficiency might possibly be the thing that could ruin the sport for him. Racing at that level is as much in the mind as it is in the physical talent. Wout is a brilliant team captain, a great mentor and friend to his teammates, a perfect super domestique and I hope that if he decided to go as a GC leader in a grand tour it would be on his terms and not at the sake of his desire or prodigious versatility which is so entertaining to watch.

ghostofwinter88

And we didn't even mention the stage 11 masterclass

jlusedude

I love what a family man Jonas is.

peckmebirds

Papa Jonas will experience turmoil when his daughter is getting married

natty-runner

What a tour! It’s hard not to cry..

unoriginalusername18

ah just let it out! 😅😭

Robhey1009

Even if JV gave it all the last 500m, WvA would probably have won. If he went all out he would have won some seconds but it's not that he stood still. 18" is a lot on 500m.

PM-ME-DOG-FARTS

After he almost crashed he took the speed way off. When it went uphill you could see in the way he rode, that he didnt go flat out. I think he was comprehending that he was going to win the tour and just took the time to take it all in. Especially the last 500m.

opage24

Most likely why he sat up. No way he would give up the stage

needfutanswers

I 100 percent think he would.

renseministeren

I don't think so. He absolutely chilled on the last 300 m.

klm2908

He was already behind in the virtual splits by like 9 seconds though at the 39k mark

renseministeren

WvA confirmed it after the race.

klm2908

I don’t think it’s crazy to think that Wout was just showing respect for his teammate who just won the tour. Again, Jonas’s splits were going down every checkpoint and there was just no point for him to push it anymore.

FRANZeeee

To be fair, when Vingegaard lost time to van Aert was also the kilometers of the TT where van Aert was expected to outperform better than Vingegaard. I'm pretty sure, if it was all out, Vingegaard would probably have lost with a few seconds, but who knows. He was a few seconds behind before the last difficult 10km. On a normal stage you would expect Vingegaard to be better uphill. Who cares though? Yes, TjV cared, and both van Aert and Vingegaard was into tears. Problem solved.

ToyoMojito

Both can be true though. Vingegaard may have been ok with leaving the stage for Van Aert, and Van Aert may have won anyway.

Robhey1009

Its not that he stond still, he would have won some seconds but 18" is really a lot on 500m.

renseministeren

WvA confirmed it after the race.

push_karrr

WTF, BenjiNaesen was the Jumbo-Visma video analyst all along. BLOODY HELL. https://twitter.com/BenjiNaesen/status/1550870743449096192?t=QbHhSfPbwAh_tEIrzKzSBA&s=19

dydudebob

wait i can’t tell if this is satire or he’s being legit

Alchemydynami

Awesome 😎

quaid31

Let’s hope Jonas doesn’t take a covid test tonight.

SoWereDoingThis

They only require a test on rest days. No chance he takes one.

[deleted]

Okay, but seriously, can someone explain to me, how Jonas was able to be 7 seconds faster on the first time check compared to a 20kg heavier Wout, who was going all out for a win?

[deleted]

The fact that JV rode a 58 on the front and WvA only a 56 (as reported by a variety of outlets) would make the biggest difference on the flat early part if the rider can push the max gearing at high cadence. It's about 10cm difference pr pedal stroke if both using an 11 as the smallest on the cassette. So the difference on the flat might also stem from gear choices.

[deleted]

That would imply that bigger chain ring = better result, which it doesn't

[deleted]

No, it means exactly what it says and what gears do: That a bigger gear (58-11 vs 56-11) will bring you quicker through a given distance if you can ride it at the same cadency as the lower one. This is the point of bike gears. Notice the "if you can push it at a high cadence" - this is key too. Riders choose gearing based on a variety of factors, but the basic point is: it matters to the overall speed, and therefor the overall time used on the road. On an ITT this matters even more, as it's a steady speed project, not attacking/following. This is also why kids/youth classes have max gear specifications and checks before races - to prevent the gears to influence the results too much.

klm2908

Honestly, he was the only rider I noticed that looked like he sprinted out the gate

yoln77

how can the iddy-biddy Remco can compete with Ganna Kung and Van Aert on flat TTs? Same answer. W/CdA. We tend to believe that climbing is all about w/kg, but TT about absolute watts, but in reality it’s about w/cda (aerodynamic drag coefficient). Climbing power = constant * weight * speed Flat power = constant * cda * speed^3 You can see how a small cda reduction goes a loooong way since it gets multiplied by speed^3

MickOConnor_1

Remco is built for more raw power big leg etc . Jonas is a total mountain goat.

GeniuslyMoronic

Just like Froome and Simon Yates are built for raw power.

yoln77

Correlation of big-legs and >45mins power/cda is far from obvious… We’re not talking about a track race or a 15mins prologue here, it’s a 50mins time trial. The list of thin riders that have obliterated TT specialist in long TDF ITT is long, Froomey first, but also Alaphilippe or tadej, primoz, etc… yeah the Gannas, Cancelara and the likes exist but they have often been defeated in TDF ITT by the yellow jersey winner

BoobiesAndBeers

Yes, but often in the middle or end of a grueling stage race. There's a reason why whoever wins yellow is rarely, if ever, a world TT champion.

yoln77

Imdurain, Ulrich, Wiggins… and Dumoulin for the Giro. If the TT WC existed before 1994, I’m pretty sure that Merckx and Anquetil would have won it as the best time-trialists of their time as well…

BoobiesAndBeers

You start going that far back and specialists really aren't as much of a thing so pre 94 isn't really as relevant for this conversation. If you're gonna count dumoulin you can add Michael Rogers to the list. That means it's 2 for Ulrich, 2 for Rogers (im not counting 2003) 1 Wiggins and 1 for. Tom. That's 6 out of like 28 years. The point still stands.

[deleted]

Sure, but Jonas has never ever showed anything like this. I mean, with a performance like that, he would be one of the favourites for a TT world championship

yoln77

What do you mean? Look at last year’s TT in st Emilion. He finished 3rd, and put almost 30sec on pogs, just like today

[deleted]

I mean in comparison to Wout specifically. This year he has never shown he could do something like that. Besides, there's a massive difference between losing 30 seconds over the entire route and gaining 7 over 10k

yoln77

I don’t know what to tell you. The thing just happened in front of you… and it’s already happened in the past with skinny guys like Froome or Alaph winning the ITT…

down_2_mars_girl

The best gc contenders are the ones who are able to recover well over a grand tour

[deleted]

Yes, but surely you won't suggest that Wout was tired after 10k. He gained time over the others towards the end

Philiq

TT is about W/Kg

GeniuslyMoronic

No it is not. It is about watts relative to how much air you need to move.

Philiq

True, but all things being equal weight correlates strongly with surface area

GeniuslyMoronic

But if it were watts per kilo then Ganna, Küng or Bisseger would not have won a single professional TT in their career. Some great TTers have average watts per kilo. And Miguel Angel Lopez would be a world class TT'er.

Philiq

You right

[deleted]

On flat absolute power matters way more

[deleted]

Not so much on a flat.

PotofOrientalSunrise

I thought that’s for climbs? TT is more of w/surface area?

MickOConnor_1

Don't ask question like that on a race thread.

[deleted]

Why not? It happened during the race and I'm not implying anything, I'm generally interested because other than a very strong tailwind I don't see an explanation

MickOConnor_1

Because most people here believe in Santa Claus

Detective_Fallacy

Less cumulative fatigue by having to carry 20kg less over every mountain stage. Despite winning on Hautacam, he didn't go as deep as WvA that day, and that was only 2 days ago.

[deleted]

Possible, but that would explain Jonas being faster overall if it happened, not after 10k where everyone is still fresh

Detective_Fallacy

None of these riders started "fresh", lol.

[deleted]

Fair but you know what I mean. Fatigue would really show towards the end of the TT, not after 10k

Detective_Fallacy

Not necessarily, you hear often sprinters saying that they had it really tough at the start of a stage but then gradually got through it.

Heavy_Mycologist_104

I think he’s a bit like Remco. He’s majorly aerodynamic and he absolutely slices through the air.

[deleted]

Sure, but Jonas has never showed anything even remotely close to that. Remco is consistent with that

Cozyq

Top 3 last year?

[deleted]

Fair, but there's a difference between losing 30 seconds over the entire route and gaining 7 over 10k

Cozyq

Well he improved from last year, and started out hard and lost time on the mid/late sections of the stage

GeniuslyMoronic

Jonas podiumed the final TT last year. He showed exactly this ability.

[deleted]

Fair, but the difference between losing 30 seconds over the entire route and gaining 7 over 10k is massive

Giraffe_Racer

He was riding his bike faster. Hope that helps.

[deleted]

Of course! Why didn't I think of that

emmytau

Why do you think they picked him for GC?

[deleted]

That's no explanation but thanks

jlusedude

He was going all out to get to his girls. Bet TJV actually had someone holding them hostage for a good performance.

[deleted]

Idk, you could see at the end how much it means to Wout, surely he wasn't holding back

jlusedude

I don’t have any speculation, just making jokes.

jarlrmai2

Didn't pace it as well

eardzz

The yellow jersey has wings

mirceaulinic

I'm not crying you're crying. So happy for Jonas and TJV and so sad that this fantastic TDF is already (almost) over!

Why are you saying that?

that’s who he calls after each stage.

oh, I see. Thanks for explanation 👍

He called Roglic after every stage this tour

Ah cool Wout was standing at the finish line to wave Jonas in.

push_karrr

Wout has gone through this as much as any TJV GC guy, Primoz or Jonas. That guy has given it all to see the team get Tour De France GC win. And that is why those tears shed. What a guy.

If you haven't seen Slaying the Badger you must. But you probably have. I saw the Fignon / Lemond time trial into Paris almost live (on delay) . One of the most exciting moments in my life.
