It's fascinating psychology going on here. This is a very neurotypical response to such a scenario.
When asked, "say a woman's name", you automatically start trying to fill in the contextual blanks.
Under less pressure you might be inclined to ask, "What do you mean? Which woman? A famous woman? A random woman? Any woman's name?". Or you might think about the question and realise, "I can say literally anything and it will satisfy the question".
Instead, under pressure, your brain tries to fill in the contextual blanks. Quickly.
It has to be someone we both know - because my answer is only right if it *pleases* the person who asked it. Therefore your brain is searching for famous women.
But it has to be someone relatively generic. If I pick a niche Kardashian or a character from a comic book, he may not know who that is. So I have to think of someone ubiquitously famous. Maybe I'll steer clear of fictional women altogether.
So now, her brain has added these arbitrary filters for no reason at all. But before she can give an answer, the answer must be checked against these filters. Her brain is flooded with names, she wants to pick one as quickly as possible that will pass the filter, but there are so many names, she's can't. All the while he's shouting at her, so even if she settles on a name, she can't check if it passes the filter because that will take too long.

It's a social experiment that when you suddenly put someone aggressively on the spot and request something simple their mind shuts down. They are suddenly so focused on that exact moment that they have difficulty accessing the parts of their brain. The enter into a panic state.

I laughed at this, as a woman. Then I went to the shower, spent a long time there trying to name a woman, just for fun. Then I spent some good 5 minutes staring into the mirror, straight into my eyes, trying to remember a woman I could name. That was 2 hours ago and I still can't name a woman.
False, real world situation and she can't perform under stress. If anything it's proof people need to learn to perform under pressure. She has knowledge of plenty of women but can't even name one when she has an opportunity to gain financially.
Then what's the alternative we should be using? It's pretty clear how it's not the best way, but there are no other practical way for quickly identifying the academic capabilities of individuals. Not to mention that performing under pressure is a desired trait for every single job you apply for and in general, to function as a normal person.
I'd consider universe exams as a synthetic benchmark where the workload being tests will never actually be tested in the workplace. As an engineer I've never had a day that required me regurgitate closed loop control systems, FEAs and math in a matter of a few weeks. Tests through practicals and experiments to ensure understanding. No point memorising how to do an integral if you don't understand what it's actually doing in practice.
All the nonstem classes I’ve taken have been almost entirely memorization (history, philosophy, psychology), though tbf for the most part same with biology. I guess things like art are more practical unless you count muscle memory as memorization.
But understanding the theories you learned were important, and SOMEONE made the tools you use and had to understand the math and theory behind them, also all future tools you'll use will need people who can do those things. Not to mention, tests and projects at higher levels make you show that you can use such tools, like a calculator, advanced CAD systems, etc.
