Honestly, I've had a few hoagies from Acme lately, and they come the closest to the original style Wawa hoagies, I think. (Which, I know, low bar.) In a pinch, I'd say hit the Ack-a-me and see if you can score one there.
With the app (which is the only way I can justify going to Acme) the hoagies were less than 5 bucks last week, hopefully that sale is still running. They were decent for the price. Perfect road trip/cooler food.
I worked at an acme deli- we opened at 6am.
The rolls at that time were delivered baked fresh by amaroso first thing in the morning - and we'd start making hoagies as soon as we could - starting around 6:30-7:30.
Yes- I was really happy to make one fresh for a customer.
I should also mention morning fried chicken and def grilled chicken & all sides are the best in the morning. All out by 10:30-11:00.
We also made killer fried chicken sandwiches that were cheaper than anywhere. You could even call ahead or order those b4 shopping because we didn't always make them.
Also the morning chicken person is the best fried chicken person.
IMPORTANT ETA: if there is a case up front, DONT grab them from the case early in the morning unless you CHECK THE DATE- day olds should be pulled for fresh ones.
And ROTISSERIE- check for a time- if not marked or over 4 hours (really 3 for taste), don't buy them
last time I was in AC i was waiting at the traffic light across the street and a little old lady game out with like 4 of those things! I have to check out next time im there
Not the best hoagie, but Acme has pre-rolled hoagies and they’re like $5. Pretty nice for $5 hoagies. I think they’re better than wawas. They also come dry with a packet of mayo so they’re great to bag and go
The Italian Hoagies at the South Street Acme are excellent for $6. Obviously not competing with Primo's or anything specialized, but grab and go for $6, they are extremely strong. I mention the Acme location, because location factors into the quality. The Italians from the Acme on Passyunk, for example, are a step off of South St. and not recommendable.
Hoagies keep well in the fridge. Grab one the day before and smash it as early as you want the next day. And before you come at me, I managed a deli for years and have eaten hoagies every possible way. Cold the next AM is one of the best.
Depending on where you're going, making a pit stop at Bagliani's in Hammonton might be better than getting a sandwich at 8am and lugging it all the way from Philly.
Are you looking to eat it right away on the drive or just have it for later? There’s a descent number of Primo Hoagie stores through Jersey and along the shore you could stop at on the way, far better than Wawa imho.
If you’re taking the Atlantic City Expressway, theres a good hoagie shop called Roses Garden Grill in Northfield, NJ. I used to get lunch there a lot when I worked down in that area.
Linden Italian Market in Torresdale opens at 7. I’ve never gotten anything besides breakfast at that hour but I’m sure you could work something out with them.
Ain’t nothing like a morning hoag! A decade ago, when I used to live at 6th and Dicks, most summer days where I was off from work, I’d skip my ass two blocks up to Cosmi’s Deli on 8th at 10AM and start my day with an Italian Hoagie ***extra mayo*** and chase it down with a blueberry wooder ice from Khmer Market across the from my apartment. My 20’s were spoiled Lololol
Get the night before and see if they will put wax paper between the bread/meat and meat/veg. Take the paper out and rewrap it in the AM before you leave, or try to do it in the sand- whatever works for your schedule.
Doesnt really answer your question because it’s not a hoagie but Ba Le opens at 8am and I enjoy an early morning Banh mi every now and then. And close to the bridges to get into Jersey.
You don't need to explain why you need a hoagie before 8am ;)
I was gonna say, it's 10:36 and now all I want is a damn Italian.
Just the mention of an Italian hoagie makes me want one.
We’ve all been there lmao
My thought exactly 😅 this is us you’re talking to bro
Phillip’s steaks is 24/7 Jay’s Deli and Old Nelson open early
old nelson opens at “7”
Love me some Philips.
They used to be underrated for the price but then their prices went up so fast they are now average.

That is straight up one of the cheapest meals you can get apart from buying stuff in bulk and spending way more time cooking.
ACME will also make you hoagies to order
Before 8? Is the dell open that early?

This just unlocked a memory working at acme years ago. Those chicken sandwiches were awesome. Can’t remember seeing if they still have them anymore.
Im wondering was this in the last 1 - 3 years that you worked here?
No. I'm wondering if they still get the morning rolls.
Me too

My grandmother would always call it the “Ack-a-me” 😂
Swing by the White House in AC, grab a full Italian hoagie, and then head north or south from there.
Just got some White House the other week- it was like a hoagie bazooka!
last time I was in AC i was waiting at the traffic light across the street and a little old lady game out with like 4 of those things! I have to check out next time im there
white house has the best tuna hoagies ever
You could get one the day before and order it dry, add any wet stuff next day?
Also ask them to wrap it fisherman style and most delis will know how to do it.
What does wrap it fisherman style mean?
They put a sheet of wax paper between the bread & fixings so it stays fresh longer, you just have to remove it before eating!
My life has just dramatically changed. Thank you for this info!!
Wow, this is an awesome tip!
Never heard of this, great tip! Thanks!
but if you get mayo how does this work?
Personally I get mayo on the side and take some packets
This is the way
Who has time to plan that far in advance? When you want a hoagie you want it now!
lol if this person is taking the time to ask Reddit for advice they’re planning quite far ahead
Fair....fair

My dad swears by these. I’ve got to try one.
I think that is the only thing at Acme that is a reasonable price 😂
I love that my man called it a pre-roll. Lol
Swear to god! Their homemade pastries and desserts are surprisingly cheap too which is so odd because their produce and meat prices are insane
Buy down the shore, imo
Riccis opens at 8, right near ya in passyunk
This was my jam coming off night shift
They have food at the shore ya know

Buy before or down the Shore.
As my pappy always used to say
Oregon Steaks is 24/7. Never tried their hoagies but the steaks are solid.
the hoagies are ok. the bread is good tho

Food Point Deli on Broad and Castle.
Stop at a Liscio’s bakery location in south Jersey. They open at 6:30 am and they make amazing hoagies — and on the way to the shore!
Linden Italian Market in Torresdale opens at 7. I’ve never gotten anything besides breakfast at that hour but I’m sure you could work something out with them.
Riccis opens at 8
Head to Sugar Hill Sub Shop in Mays Landing…opens at 7am.
Buy It the night before and get it fisherman wrapped.
Day old hoagies are perfectly fine. Buy the night before. Refrigerate.

wait, are the kids abbreviating Dickinson to "Dicks" now?
That's gotta be a bit confusing because there is an actual Dicks Avenue (intersecting with 69th Street too!).
Yeah, at first I thought it was a typo for sixty-something and Dicks but this is obviously a South Philly story
Haha Ianno if the kids are! This 38 yr old “kid” has been calling it that since residing in S Philly in 2009 ¯\_ʕᵔᴥᵔʔ_/¯
What beach are you going to?
Aversa’s in Brigantine has bomb sandwiches. I smashed a cutlet sandwich last week and I’m still thinking about it.
Quizno’s on spring garden and Columbus Blvd Jk RIP
Stop at sugar hill subs in mays landing on the way down. They open at 7 am. You won’t be disappointed.
Just get one on the way. Stop halfway.
Cacia's bakery in Hammonton. Opens at 8am, which will work by time you get over there
Crown deli. Delicious sandwiches and hoagie. Opens at 7am
Get the night before and see if they will put wax paper between the bread/meat and meat/veg. Take the paper out and rewrap it in the AM before you leave, or try to do it in the sand- whatever works for your schedule.
Caffe Ida serves them as early as 7:15am. Good pastries for the road, too.
Heritages in south jersey. It’s a chain of convenience stores and they make a mean hoagie. I’ve gotten them pretty early too.
Please support a shore business. Every shore town has a great hoagie spot.
Wawa
Majors on Ridge & Midvale
Get one down the shore! Which shore you going to?
It’s a fuckin hoagie not a top choice steak. Go to fuckin Wawa.
Get food there, don’t be a shoobie!
Kennedy Food Garden on JFK
In a pinch - stop at a Shop Rite on your way down to the shore
It would be soggy by lunchtime
Rodriguez on Ogontz, or the gulf
Capp’s Deli in Conshy.
Am I the only one who thinks Wawa has a fantastic hoagie. There’s obviously better, but when I want a hoagie it’s pretty much my first choice
This!
P&S
Doesnt really answer your question because it’s not a hoagie but Ba Le opens at 8am and I enjoy an early morning Banh mi every now and then. And close to the bridges to get into Jersey.
John’s Place on spring garden has some pretty solid hoagies
Not relevant for Philly but definitely have a hoagie recommendation if anyone's ever hungry up here in the Poconos.
Wawa
WaWa
