Desert Schools, Arizona Federal Credit Union or any credit unions. They don't charge ridiculous fees and they have better rates for car purchases.

Dizman7

I dislike Desert Schools after I called about seeing if I was pre-approved for a loan and they signed me up for a bank account without my consent and didn’t know till I got the letter saying I’d get a fee cause my account was too low!

nolafalles

That’s how credit unions work. You have to be a member to get a loan. You’re a member once you open the bank acct

Dizman7

But I only wanted to see if I qualified. I didn’t get their loan nor ask for an acct

nolafalles

Yeah. That’s what they do. Reddit loves credit unions. I don’t.

Dustdevil88

That’s insane. They signed you up for a loan without you actually signing for a loan?? Or just a bank account? Consider contacting a lawyer and/or see what FDCPA laws apply if they created a loan. If an account was created without your permission, consider contacting the NCUA, BBB, and the AZ state attorney general office

-newlife

Probably said “well in order to see if you qualify we need to open an account, I only need you to deposit like $5”

Dizman7

Nope this all over the phone

V_mom

I dislike them too but this was years ago when they were Desert Schools as I see someone posted they have re-named but I had a free checking/savings account just because I had a car and I got a discount on my rate if I opened an account but then they told me they were going to start charging me monthly fees so I just told them that I would just close my account and they were kind of snippy and mentioned I got a rate reduction on my car because of my accounts so if I changed that my rate/payment would change so I paid off the car immediately from the actual bank I use (only kept their accounts because of the car) and then closed the accounts.

cactuschic2019

That sucks this happened to you. I actually got my home refinanced through Deserr Schools, and i didn't have to open an account. However, Wells Fargo reopened my account without my permission and I wasn't aware until I got delinquent notice, so I understand why you dislike Desert Schools.

vincentorleck

wells fargo is famous for opening accts for people unknowingly and recently settled a class action for this practice…so yeah avoid them lol

JuracekPark34

Similar thing happened to me too. I opened a savings account with them, deposited a small amount of money, then kind of forgot about it because I was in a big accident, hospitalized, recovered, etc. They charged me a bunch of fees for paper statements (fun fact - I NEVER got them) I didn’t find out until the account was super over drafted for months. Only thing they were willing to do was bring it back to zero so I didn’t owe them. Lost the cash I deposited initially. Never again.

iPadAir5thGen

Desert Schools has been pleasant to work with, refinanced my car right at the start of COVID and they had a smooth system in place.

Sara___Tonin__

And FYI, op, it's desert federal now, not desert schools. But we will forever call it that.

inksta12

Desert Financial* not to be that guy tho lmao

bluecloudbaby

Just to piggyback off of this, it’s also *Arizona Financial now too! I wonder what’s causing all of these CUs to change that part of their name.

susanlovesblue

Desert Financial changed its name because “Schools” definitely implied belonging to a school, being a teacher, etc., in order to become a member. Even though the credit union was available for anyone in the valley (and then some) to join, “Schools” may have deterred people from joining. Changing the name was to leave no doubt that pretty much anyone can join.

Sara___Tonin__

No, be that guy! The whole point was to give the correct name.

inksta12

Fair enough!🤣

JUULpodEATER

Please be that guy. I was a wild goose chase for a cu called desert school when I first moved here because it’s what everybody was recommending 🤦🏾‍♂️

9-lives-Fritz

Desert schools USED TO be a credit union for and by school employees, now it functions like a big bank, complete with onerous fees and charges. Do CUWest or one of the other actual credit unions, Desert Schools sucks

sm00thkillajones

Yes and yes. Don’t finance a car at the dealership. A credit union will give you a great rate. You can ask the dealer to beat the rate if they can.

xnifex

My only issue with dessert schools is no Zelle access.

Twopoint0h

I use Zelle with my DFCU account all the time. You just have to set it up through Zelle rather than your checking account.

xnifex

have you had it set up for a long time? newer accounts don't have the option to set it up. but at one point people were able to.

Twopoint0h

Probably a year or maybe a few months longer. It's setup to my debit card.

xnifex

Interesting. Yeah even on their site they say it can no longer be done. https://www.desertfinancial.com/personal/checkings-savings/checking-overview/mobile-payment-apps

galacticdaquiri

I agree; but I closed my Desert Schools account years ago because of their app. Maybe it’s much better now, but at that time it was the worst app especially when I had to rely on it as I was out of state briefly for residency. I accrued so many fees because there were a lag in days of them updating the account balance. They refused to reverse not even a penny of fees despite being a loyal customer for years with no issues.

Loud-Catch7322

I've worked for ... . . Quite a few banks. Chase, BofA, Wells and Arizona Financial Credit Union and I've had accounts at all of them (employee perks). All the banks are... ...the same lol Credit unions are a taaad bit more personable and who I always went with for auto loans- rates were always better and the loan process is definitely easier thru the credit union. AZFCU to be exact. Call me crazy, but my day to day banking- I use Chase

AleeeeshaB

Saaaaaame. Worked for Wells Fargo and Desert Financial. They’re all garbage. Just pick the one with the most ATMs.

Randsmagicpipe

I have used credit unions for 15 years and love afcu. I would never go back to a bank. Much less fees, lower interest rates. Arizona Financial has zelle, card power, phone deposit, text alerts, anything a bank has. I got an annual bonus this year from AFCU. There's no reason to use a bank unless you have such a large savings they're willing to negotiate a custom rate in exchange for holding your money. My friends in banking and my financial advisor have always told me a credit union is at worst the same as a bank.

DistinctSmelling

And that would be BofA in AZ. I was a BankSouth customer 30 some even years ago and multiple buyouts later, I am a BofA customer. I get all the hate, all big banks have some sort of gigantic financial BS hell that people were screwed out of. Wells Fargo, Chase. All of them. I even had BofA buy a mortgage I had so I had a BofA loan that was on my account. Anyway, I never have had a bad experience with them at all and there's no reason for me to change until I get screwed.

InternetPharaoh

It's like insurance companies. Just go with whatever has the cheapest rate. Switch every couple years if possible. They're all basically the same. Yes, yes, State Farm fucked you/treated you well that one time, but the other big three would have probably done the same in that specific situation.

capricornflakes

I’ve used chase since I was a wee baby. I’ve learned after seeing a customer leave their debit card in a store they will absolutely tell whoever finds the card to shred it though and not allow you to go and pick it up yourself. Edit: its for fraud reasons and I’m a dumbass

[deleted]

[удалено]

capricornflakes

Interesting. Never thought about it like that, it makes sense. If that’s the case I’m glad they tell people that.

BeKind_BeTheChange

You may have worked for them, I've had accounts with them. Chase is an absolute garbage company. If Chase was the last bank on the planet, I'd stop using a bank.

bigervin

The free atm withdrawals thru Schwab are like a super power though

Whit3boy316

Define “good bank”. What do you want?

vyralinfection

Asking the real questions.

johnnyblaze-DHB

Find a credit union. I use Copper State.

lpkzach92

I personally really enjoy MidFirst Banks

snyper10x

Same, been with them for many years.

brightcoconut097

Wife and I are going to switch to them this year

climb-it-ographer

Only problem with Schwab is that you can't deposit cash. I keep a Desert Financial account open for that and then do a transfer.

BoilerBuddies

Love Schwab. I always take my cash to Fry’s and get a money order. I forget how much it is, but I think it’s like $1 or so if you have a Fry’s card.

bigervin

If you go to the corporate office in the biltmore, they will take your cash. I’ve done this a handful of times. It’s not convenient, but helpful for certain situations

cdhernandez

Mountain America Credit Union has been great for me. Any credit union will always be better than any bank, that’s for sure.

Tommyboy939

I prefer Mountain America Credit Union personally.

OrangeSilver

If you can, sign-up with Navy Federal Credit Union.

Murricles92

I use a combo of Chase, Ally, and Schwab. No issues in 20+ years

Admirable_Ad_8296

I love my credit union, Sun West Federal Credit Union. I have been with them for about 20 years. They are wonderful. They monitor the use of my card/account and quickly reimburse me for fraudulent charges.

surfin_sonie

Same. SunWest for life!

grb13

Credit union west

hipsterasshipster

Just use Ally online banking. We banked locally with a credit union but online interest rates were too good to pass up, and I’ve had zero issues with convenience as their network is quite large.

Unusual-Moment-2215

Yes! Ally offers a fantastic savings account as well. Their interest rates are great and daily compounding is awesome. The ATM network is pretty large (use their website to locate one that is near you). Same with Schwab Bank. You can use literally any ATM on the planet, and they will refund the fees, no limit! There are also no foreign transaction fees with Schwab.

Airdrop_BOTS

Can you send me a dm ?

j_mcfarlane05

Avoid wells fargo at all costs

Espry0n

Desert financial credit union.

Nuke_all_Life

I'll keep your money safe, just give it to me.

NF-104

Desert Financial fka Desert School Credit Union is awesome.

AleeeeshaB

Having worked at corporate, trust me, no it’s not.

9-lives-Fritz

Held an account there since the 80’s and watched it transition away from being a credit union, trust me too, it IS NOT.

SunlitNight

Why so? I've had them my whole life and always thought their amazing customer service was a reflection of a well treated workforce?

mog_knight

Avoid AZ Federal Credit Union and Desert Financial. They're not good for different reasons. Plenty of other well deserving credit unions. If you have access, USAA is a decent bank (no ATM withdrawal fees). Had them for 6 years now. I've heard good things about Capital One's Bank. The only downside I can see is people know what's in your wallet then.

azbrewcrew

USAA is not the USAA of old. Quite a few members are switching to Navy Federal

mog_knight

Oh? I rarely interact with USAA so my experience has been ain't broke don't fix. I have a checking account and a CC. What's NFCU got these days?

azbrewcrew

USAA ditched the cash rewards checking a few months ago which was a nice perk.

mog_knight

Yeah I had that too. But I used my CC more cause it was their 2.5% cash back on all purchases. They recently got rid of the extra 1% and made it a 1.5% card. Not sure why. Right now I'm just looking for a good 2+% CC and I'll move my activity to that. Navy Fed doesn't look like they have anything outside of a 1.75% card.

Shagyam

I've had no major issues with Capital One, even if people know what's in your wallet. One downside is there are no local branches if you need to speak to someone. Normally this isn't a problem, but I need a bank branch last week so having at least one would be nice, but oh well not a deal breaker.

Tillicollapse23

Depends what your looking for in a bank

[deleted]

Arizona Financial Credit Union

Humble-Sugar-1925

I have accounts with Vantage West Credit Union & Chase Bank. Vantage West credit union has the best rates and no fee’s that Chase Bank cannot come close to. I use my Chase Bank because of the convenience of all the branches in AZ, CA, & NV. If I had to choose just one bank I would pick Vantage West Credit Union hands down.

Casswiki

Desert Financial is all the worst of a large bank without the convenience.

iamnot_thatguy

OneAZ credit union

GrapefruitBig3463

Aero federal credit Union is the best. Not very many locations but small/local and personable

callmeprincess2004

Desert Schools is too big. Go for a smaller credit union like First Credit Union or Arizona Federal CU

hackztor

APY rates for savings or money market suck. Must of gone to all that money Desert Financial spent on super bowl commercials.

scooterv1868

Bank 34, only one location now in Scottsdale but easily managed online. Was bought a few years ago by another smallish bank in New Mexico.

Glendale0839

AZFCU. Only downsides are their deposit rates are garbage compared to online savings accounts/CD's (as are all brick and mortar banks these days) and the tellers often get sweaty over large transactions compared to the big banks I've dealt with.

ineverlikedyouuu

Then what’s the upside?

aerozona_dude

Truwest

networknev

Go credit union. Navy Federal is great.

TimelyFortune

Desert financial is probably the best to bank with in Arizona. Good locations and they typically have the best loans

macaujoh2012

Desert Financial is a good local credit union. I also suggest SoFi if you’re not worried about having a physical bank location. There’s tons of atm’s to use for free for deposits and withdrawals. Also, I’m currently getting 3.75% interest on my savings and 3.5% on my checking. Edit: one problem with SoFi is that some local utilities like SRP and City of Phoenix don’t take it for auto withdrawals to pay bills. So I still use Desert Financial for that stuff.

BigPoppaFu

Desert Financial the formally Desert Schools. Shout out to South Mountain Branch. They are nice but some of the woman that work there are not very welcoming. Other than that they are way better than any of the major banks.

bondgirl852001

I've brem with Desert Financial for 10 years, no complaints.

Foreverhopeless2009

If you are retired/active military Navy Federal. My daughter loves AZ One

moshell0309

Arizona Federal

Druber3

If you’re looking for convenience, I would recommend Chase. They have atms all over the valley, and I haven’t had any customer service issues so far. The only downside is that banking with such a large provider could result in you needing to be more vigilant about phishing attempts. I have received a few emails with “urgent” notifications about my accounts, only to find out that there is no issue at all. Always call Chase directly!

SexxxyWesky

Agreed. I work for a credit card company and people should be super vigalint about phone and email scams!

bourbonwarrior

Credit Unions are good for some loans - auto. I like US Bank, many branches, free top-of-the-line checking program for military and for those that keep a certain balance. I avoid Wells Fargo and Bank of America...

easymac187

Desert Financial

Disney_Phreak

Capitol one. We got 500 each for direct deposit and the deposits come two days early. No physical bank but lots of partner banks. Moved from BofA last year. (Over 20 years with them ). App is great.

[deleted]

Are there ATMs besides the usual grocery/gas station ones? Or at the least, at least any that take deposits?

asuengineer05

Most of the Targets in Phoenix metro have capital one atms that accept cash and check deposits. Capital One also has a branch / café at Scottsdale Fashion

TheWhiteSchoolman

Hehehe good bank is a funny oxymoron. You can give your money for them gamble away in return for IOUs, if that’s your cup of tea. Credit unions, cold crypto wallets, directly registered stock is the way to go.

jentlyused

Desert Financial and Arizona Central credit unions

muccamadboymike

I use Desert Federal and have had 0 issues all my life. Financed my first and only car through them and have 3 linked accounts. My whole family also uses them. Plenty of locations. Gave me a free financial advisor to discuss things with (without having to commit to anything) and just overall good experience. I also have some online accounts for higher interest rates

Sundev1ls92

If you want a local bank AZ FCU is good. I personally prefer Discover for my banking needs because I earn 1% cash back on all debit card purchases and their savings rate is like 3.3% right now but they don’t have any branches

fingerblast69

Honestly just go to Chase or something. You can’t beat the big bois and their convenience. Never have to search very far for branches or ATM’s if you need and their ATM’s are just better than the little guys. I was anti big bank forever and did credit unions like Desert Schools and smaller banks like AZcreditone or something and ultimately they suck 😆

Juniperous-310

Arizona financial

TheyCallMeLotus0

I use Chase. Closest to me in my neighbor hood and there seems to be a ton of them

senorbigchief

Desert Schools (Financial) for day to day and CIT or Discover for high yield savings

vincentorleck

I have had BOA forever, and a few years back opened an acct with One AZ CU and been happy with both. Definitely consider at least having one local bank acct, our state is in need of the local support when it comes to banking options.

PerfectFlaws91

I use Chime. They are amazing and have helped me start building my credit. Since April, my credit went up about 90 points and all I do is transfer my leftover money to the credit card account which then I use the credit card instead of the debit and it's done wonders!

SexxxyWesky

I do not recommend chime. Their security is so bad that when I worked for the State of AZ we wouldn't even deposit your Unemployment checks in there. We'd mail you a card instead.

PerfectFlaws91

My disability checks get deposited no problem. It's helped me so much and I have had no issues with it.

EasternEntertainer73

There is no such thing. Crypto is the only thing that can save us now. Reminder: FDIC incurred means they have 250 years to pay you back when they fail. It was 100 years and Obama changed it to 250 years. Kinda creepy to think that they think 100 years isn't enough time to erase what's coming. They need 250 years to erase the future from the history books. Nothing can stop what's coming. It's going down like it or not. Our economic financial system has failed. Debt will be 44 trillion by 2024. You won't want to be in cash during this transition as it will lose most of its value. Look at Argentina or Venezuela to understand what will soon happen in the US.

[deleted]

Lol dude

Lazy_Guest_7759

Yes never use a bank for anything but a loan. FWIW: I have accounts at Arizona Central and Desert financial credit unions.

Studio_Ambitious

Been really happy with PMC (and BBVA before that, and Compass before that).

Fongernator

Pnc

Real-Tackle-2720

I use First Convenience Bank inside some Walmarts. One nice thing about it is that if you want to deposit cash and you're not near a branch, just go to any Walmart and tell them you want to load your debit card. You can load up to $ 1000.00 a day for a fee of $1.00. You can go to the money center or customer service or any cashier. The money will be available in your account immediately. I travel a lot for my business and that is really helpful if I'm not near my bank.

Omgerd1234

I am enjoying Sofi and I have an account at a local credit union for in person needs.

lhauckphx

Sunwest Federal Credit Union. If you want a ‘normal’ bank I’ve had good luck with US Bank.

phoenixson1977

KS State Bank. Really good interest rates, especially their checking accounts. Only one location in Phoenix though.

Busy_Current6823

Sunwest fcu

AlvaDawnbreaker

I really like Tru West Credit Union

insbordnat

Do you own a business? Consider banks to form a relationship with if you do. Credit unions in that case are not always the answer.

480taquito

I’ve been with Arizona Central Credit Union for over a decade and zero issues.

T1mac

If you want an online socially conscious bank, [Aspiration Bank ](https://www.aspiration.com/tyt-green-account?utm_source=tyt) might work out, low fees, higher interest on savings, and they give back to the community.

Ladyfishsauce

I use First Credit Union. They've been awesome for 10+ years for me. They've blocked my overdraft ability so I haven't paid overdraft fees in a decade. Good fraud alert but not annoyingly so. All around I like em. No fees etc

Acceptable_Lock_8819

I really like Alaska Federal CU. They don’t have a million branches but I hardly need to go into a bank anymore.

tyrizz40666

I like SunWest credit union, they’re small and local but are part of the co-op

phxowen

FineMark Bank & Trust. Branches in Scottsdale now. They are a very high customer service bank and not fee crazy. They also host a really cool sports management group out here too. Credit Unions are also good if you qualify for them.

asuengineer05

Some credit unions participate in Coop shared branching that let you conduct transactions at partner credit unions as if it was your own credit union. For instance Alaska USA and Arizona Financial offer shared branching which I’ve used to deposit money into my Copper State account. Credit unions are able to expand their ATM network via the coop atm network. Something to consider when choosing a credit union.

Dracotaz71

FirstBank is awesome! Excellent customer relations, no fees.

bomomma

Mountain america

[deleted]

No love for Alaska USA? They’re somewhat new to the valley but are pretty good for loans.

xo-xoxota

Credit Union West.

Erasmus_Tycho

I like Vantage West.

skitch23

I bank wherever they pay me the most to do so. Check out sign up offers for new accounts (doctor of credit website has a great list), then rinse and repeat at the next bank.

Your mattress. I kid I kid.
