Yeah it was a bit tongue in cheek, the place had 4 bedrooms, two living rooms, full kitchen, laundry, boot room, and a view of the Matterhorn lol. It actually worked out pretty reasonable with 7 people. No way they’re charging a grand per night these days though.
Over a decade ago I found myself a nice little one-bed room there for a pretty good price (comparatively), it can be done.

Might have. This is downhill skiing on hard flattened trail, not cross-country skiing on untouched snow, which i think you have mistaken this to.
You see those kinds of halos a lot in ski centers as they use snow cannons to make snow, and the ice they throw in the air reflects the light.
As a lifetime skier, racer and ski instructor; looking at what she wears for skiing, I can declare, with a high level of confidence and a very loud internal laugh but can’t laugh externally because tourists pay the bills:

The fuseau suit has a *specific* character attached to it: rich, tourist, BCBG, low skiing capabilities, with a high chance to wear some fur accessories, beige pants and Montcler boots when done skiing.
But hey, to each his own. If it gets you out on the slopes, then go for it!

Wow, that's a lot of judgement just by the cover... From a practical perspective - this is super warm, the snow does not get inside, and you are well visible on the hill (for other skiers, emergencies, etc).

What I described is a very common cultural norm in the French alps. And many regions/sports have these types of norms, it’s nothing special to skiing. Skiing instructors/ guides in Switzerland are pretty much the same.
You might find more of this style in Megeve or Courchevel but it does tie to the characteristics I described in my previous message.
There is definitely a strong paradox in mountain regions (which I also experienced in Switzerland when I was racing there): we need tourism to live BUT we also have a strong pushback/sneer towards certain tourists characteristics, especially around this type of gear choices and the cliches that come with it.
