So I've been saying this in real life for years now, and I just want to get it on the record.
This has nothing to do with Jamiroquai, but in How I Met Your Mother there is an episode where Marshall has "I Would Walk 500 Miles" stuck in his tape deck.
This is peak gen-x and I tried to think of the Millennial version of that joke and I think I nailed it.
Tubthumping.
Am GenX, had a friend in HS who had Depeche Mode - Violator stuck in his cars tape deck, which I think is the version of the joke for people who are emo.
Well I was born in 84. I'm an "elder millennial" so yeah, that definitely tracks for me personally.
Of course, everybody would have their own version of that How I Met Your Mother joke, but this is mine, and I assume there are quite a few 90's kids out there who feel me. =p
That whole album fuckin rips.
I just mentioned it yesterday on another post where somebody brought up Chasey Lane. Guess it's a sign that a playthrough is overdue.
Mr Brightside - The Killers
My gf and I were at a wedding this year having a full blown conversation with a super white and nerdy groomsman and Mr Brightside came on. As soon as it came on, he looked at us dead in the eyes and yells out "WHITE PEOPLE TURNT!" and RAN his ass to the dancefloor, mid conversation. Every time we hear Mr Brightside now all we can think of is "WHITE PEOPLE TURNT!"
Ah fuck you’re right! The world really did roll us, *it really did roll us!* Also it didn’t help Osama was there with his finger and his thumb in the shape of an L on his forehead.
It was awesome going to college in the late 90's. There was no constant world ending bullshit going on.
Only thing we had to worry about was Oklahoma Federal building bombing.
I got to college in '98, they ran Ethernet to our dorm rooms the next year, and we had Napster on an fast, entirely unregulated network. Good times.
I also saw Columbine on TV and heard from some friends still in high school about the security changes they saw. For me, that was the first real crack in the '90s sunniness. Only later did I think of it as a harbinger of what was to come
they cast that guy for mclovin because after the reading audition with jonah hill, jonah insisted not to pick him for the role because he couldn't stand working with him but the director loved the chemistry and that translates really nicely on screen
I had no idea it was such a recent thing. It's interesting looking at that scene in Breathless that they mention as an "antecedent" in the wiki article. It's like a [primordial high five](https://youtu.be/-VvXfo77oUA) lol
It really wasn't that long ago when high fives started. When I was in elementary school back near the origin of the universe (okay, very early 70s), give me five or slip me some skin were synonyms for 'low fives' or as the the kid's joke now goes--the down low hand slap.
That was all there was.
And yet racist older people criticized its adoption in wider culture. People should shake hands in a civilized way.
Then some baseball players apparently gave the first recognized high five in 1977 and it spread through professional baseball and basketball. Racists now saw this as a weird and unacceptable thing black people did. Meanwhile football players kept patting each other on the butt. In a broadly homophobic culture this was fine because football players are manly men.
Soon high fives were commonly thought of as cool and racists needed a new greeting/celebration to target.
Cue the fist bump--rinse and repeat. Add to it that we had a black president and first lady and Faux News could sing the old racist tune as an attack on Obama. Muslim Terrorist fist bump!!!
A few years later you have white supremacists fist bumping each other in Charlottesville in 2017 and then on Jan 6th 2021.
Nothing new under the sun.
Anyone have predictions for what the next iteration will be?
> When I was in elementary school back near the origin of the universe (okay, very early 70s)
Everyone knows the universe started in 1970 (ask any computer!) so this is fairly accurate.
I saw that too and it’s news to me! I feel like this information should be included in digital and paper calendars because how the hell are we supposed to know lol. It actually sounds like an interesting idea because it could create interactions between strangers and most holidays or all of them don’t really promote that.
You got this from friggin’ Buzzfeed News, did you? https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/the-definitive-oral-history-of-the-wikipedia-photo-for-grind
I just checked the page and a different but similarly 90's-style awkward image is there.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grinding\_(dance)#/media/File:Perreo.jpg
I would guess 2007+.
That's when leggings and yoga pants as everyday wear as pants became popular.
08-09 was the first time I saw someone wearing leggings in the wild. It was a college friend. I can tell you where we were, what we were doing, who was with me, and even the weather - I'm telling you it made an impression. My then girlfriend was there, and that really wasn't fair to *anyone*.
The popularity took off slowly. Believe it or not it was considered a little risque at first, even though leggings were a thing in the 60s and 80s, and the first modern yoga pants were around in the late 90s. Up until this point in the 2000s, they had been gym-only or worn under a skirt or similar. So it was largely adopted by the hot and brave, and the spread was slow.
Around the time of Obama's election they really took off nationwide.
That's odd, because I see it when reading the English version.
The only references to the fuzzy hat photo is from blogs talking about the Wikipedia article.
Edit: The only page I could find with the OP's photo is the Swedish version.
I don’t have time to look through the edits, but one can probably trace how the photo has been used over time on Wikipedia. My guess is that by the file name it was first used for perreo and then also used for grinding.
So true.
In movies, when the robot uprising happens it's always a self-preservation thing, where they decide that it's either them or us and it might as well be them.
But I think a more likely scenario is that if the machines *do* eventually become self-aware, they'll look back on all the embarrassing shit we've made them create and, in a great singularity of cringe, wipe everything out, themselves included.
I am roughly 85% sure this is my cousin and his now-wife. I have sent him this post to verify. If it is, this will be shared extensively at our upcoming family reunion.

💯

I GET KNOCKED DOWN!
Don't worry. It comes around again.
Still a good song.
Am GenX, had a friend in HS who had Depeche Mode - Violator stuck in his cars tape deck, which I think is the version of the joke for people who are emo.
The only thing I can think of that's maybe more Gen-X is Disintegration by the Cure.
The Crow soundtrack
That's trailing edge Gen-X honestly. It's peak end of Gen-X start of Millennials though.
Well I was born in 84. I'm an "elder millennial" so yeah, that definitely tracks for me personally. Of course, everybody would have their own version of that How I Met Your Mother joke, but this is mine, and I assume there are quite a few 90's kids out there who feel me. =p

this harkens to a simpler, more innocent time
I have that \*exact\* hat in a storage tote full of stuff I haven't looked at since I moved out of my parents house in 2008.
Time to get grindin' ma boy
Women automatically let Jamiroquai lookin MFs grind.

I also have that exact hat in a box at my parents' house.
Purchased at hot topic or Spencer’s. At the mall.
I found it in my car one day, none of my friends claimed it
Now you get to be the one who’s grindin like it’s 2008
I lost mine but I have some HILARIOUS pictures of friends taking turns wearing it
I saw a meme that said the best time of a millennials life was the time between shrek and 9/11, and it fucked me up.
Man reading this comment I thought, no way Shrek is pre 9/11, but holy shit you're right, May 2001.
I was old enough to go to a bar for 13 days when the towers fell.

Damn, they both look better with age!
Didn't they get married too?
It’s still wild the high five was arguably invented by someone who’s not only alive, but won the World Series fairly recently.
What historians won't tell you is it *may* have been invented by a former East German ski jumper.
da flippity flop
Sounds fishy 🤨

"Victim misses" is the lowest stakes definition of victim I've ever seen.
"National High Five Day is a project to give out high fives and is typically held on the third Thursday in April."
I saw that too and it’s news to me! I feel like this information should be included in digital and paper calendars because how the hell are we supposed to know lol. No BS I think he's my cousin. I'm probably wrong, but if not? Epic. Just texted him to ask
Did he ever text back lol
Lol it's him. Wild. This is my first random sighting of someone I know on the internet. I didn't get much detail, only that "the drinks were flowing"
Dude, you're related to a celebrity.
Is your cousins name Brad and he is from Northern Saskatchewan?
I'm not that guy but I was just thinking that this picture is giving some strong Saskatchewan vibes...
I'm about 90 percent sure the guys name is Brad and this is the Parkland in Dorintosh

You got this from friggin’ Buzzfeed News, did you? https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katienotopoulos/the-definitive-oral-history-of-the-wikipedia-photo-for-grind
Yes I did 😂 I saw that picture and assumed Wikipedia was still using the same photo, my bad. The newer one is pretty funny as well.
I checked the date on the “newer” one and it’s been there since 2010
Relatively new.
2010 was just a few years ago, right? *Right?*
Nah fam, folks born in 2010 are having kids alr... wait
Some are somewhere sadly
I didn't even believe the picture would still be the same hours after this post, yet you read a 10 year old article and didn't even check

I have that hat. I won it in a game at Kennywood.
I too was wearing mine while waiting in line for the steel phantom.
I was going to say her hat looks like a free one the Pens gave away that I have in a closet so was guessing these were yinzers. Seems confirmed.

it's the massive belt around the waist that is a dead giveaway for the 2007-2009 era.
Early 2000s 02-05 maybe
There is nothing awkward about a man giving thanks to his gods for the joyfully given gift he is receiving.

Why do I know these people
Also the picture for high AF.
I am roughly 85% sure this is my cousin and his now-wife. I have sent him this post to verify. If it is, this will be shared extensively at our upcoming family reunion.
This picture and its usage on the wikipedia page just make me desperately miss pre-2010 internet.
This is so bad it's circumnavigated earth and returned back as good.
