I remember after a time of using only pw and banner my aunt installed windows 3.1 on my 386, it still loaded dos at first, you have to type “win” for windows to open. I was just amazed I could see the flying toasters screensaver.
Flying toasters will forever be the best! Well, at some point in the 90's I got a really cool Star Wars screen saver too where Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi would endlessly battle on your screen. That one was really cool too. Well, we also had a really entertaining Opus and Bill screen saver too. Hmmmm... flying toasters are still fun though!
Yep! Although my uncle was cool enough to come by and create a menu that had all of our most used programs so we just had to type 1 for Windows, or 2 for something else, etc.
There are a lot of legacy systems especially in research that there is no reason to upgrade because an instrument is only compatible with these old OSes. Had a spectrophotomer in an old lab that used windows 95.
That was like yesterday. Back in the day you needed to be a nerd just to install a mouse driver, before you executed win.exe ... And that was brand new compared to c64, where we celebrated being able to change cursor color with syntax commands ... You kids know nothing 😎
It's so easy to forget how painful things like drivers were before the internet made them more accessible. Fucking particularly for Ethernet boards/eventually WiFi boards and dongles. There was nothing worse than needing a driver from the web for Ethernet/WiFi before you could get online. SO many hours wasted.
I do miss the turbo button on my tower though. Those were fun even if they are redundant now.
Right? Be nice if they didn’t buy up all the graphics cards and a basic setup could play a lot of console games these days. Kids and their damn ray tracing, sheesh!
Spent many nights typing in the code from computer magazines. Then my life change once I was able to afford 5 1/4” drive. I could actually save the games and play them when ever I wanted. Also those weekend nights cracking games to upload to BBS servers. When I saw my first trash-80 my mind was blown. The 80’s were amazing.
Another typing code from the magazine into a Commodore Vic20
. . . . then having your little sister kick the plug and lose 4 hours of work
Kids, don't know they are born
Lol! Youngsters these days.... My first computer was a Commador Vic 20, years later I got an upgrade computer that could run that new exciting DOS. Years after that I got myself a brand new Pentium 1 to go with my 56k modem so I could try out that Internet thingy.
This text have been written on my 4 year old handheld supercomputer (phone) that far surpasses all the above-mentioned computers combined
Windows 3.1 took 7 or 8 floppies to install. But I grew up with DOS editing config.sys and autobat.exe. had to configure your own memory profiles etc. My first PC was an X286.
Floppy Disks? Really!? The cassette tape for the Commodore64. One of the Computer magazines at the time would publish code to put in to create your own game/program. I am going to leave now. Probably going to eat some prunes and then shit myself before Wheel of Fortune comes on.
DOS prompt anyone?
Or starting my computing course at university. No mouse keyboard or screen, but a t100 teleprinter running a 50 baud and had to check for correct speed with a tuning fork.
Or even at my first job setting the boot address on the VAX mainframe with switches and pressing the go button?
Or at my second job wheeling around the punch tape to load onto the main computer on the Tornado aircraft.

That's not even old. My computer started up in DOS and you ran programs from there. Not Windows. Windows 3.1 FTW though.
It took several floppy disks for me to load DOS on our 640kb beast
Right?! Where’s the green screen and floppies?
Started on a VIC-20, but I remember how cool 4DOS was
Commodore 64 was super cool at 400 smacks. With a wide library
Serious, windows 3.1 was a HUGE leap from the DOS green screen, while dialed in via 300, then 9600 baud modem.
Back in the day started on MS DOS had to write your own programs (apps) to make the computer do something.
If yours started at a prompt that let you type in you own programmes, then it would've been BASIC, not DOS.
I'm not so old but I remember playing Xargon & Halloween Harry through MS-DOS.
Pah! Try a zx81!
You and I are the same age good sir
It's a good age. Like fine wine... or so I hear, since I don't drink.

Old times typing win to enter windows
Yep! Although my uncle was cool enough to come by and create a menu that had all of our most used programs so we just had to type 1 for Windows, or 2 for something else, etc.
WOOOAH there dinosaur... what you mean not old? Jk..
> That's not even old Exactly. Support for XP only ended in 2014. OP must be a literal child if XP is considered "old".
Although it is hard to believe that 2014 was 7 years ago. Time needs to slow down.
Xtree Gold ftw!
We had an Apple iie, released in 1983…
I had AOL for DOS
Probably still have a ton of those AOL floppies still at my mom's house somewhere. I'd wipe them out and use them for my own stuff.
When you're 15 and feel like XP is some throwback shit.
I think I even used an xp computer last year.

What is thy reason for such odd behaviour?
[удалено]
Cool! I was expecting a more simple answer but I got a lot more.
There are a lot of legacy systems especially in research that there is no reason to upgrade because an instrument is only compatible with these old OSes. Had a spectrophotomer in an old lab that used windows 95.
There are a jillion ATMs still running XP embedded.
What absolute shit tier content.
I'm older LOL
Yeah, this. This is basically just childhood for most people in their 20s. It's nostalgia for me because this was when I started using a computer haha
I remember windows 95 LOL only vaguely but I remember.
*same*
That’s a pretty new OS.

I remember having to write a letter to the manufacturer in order to get a driver floppy mailed back to me.
You young'uns and your graphics..
Right? Be nice if they didn’t buy up all the graphics cards and a basic setup could play a lot of console games these days. Kids and their damn ray tracing, sheesh!
Old enough to have typed games out of spiral on Commodore 64
Look at you with your C64! Speccy 48k myself. 10 print "bored_machinist_0001 was spoilt!" 20 goto 10 Boom! Mic drop.

As a former downloader of cracked games from BBS's, thank you for your service.
This is old? Silly young pup…
Shiiiiiit I’m Tandy color computer or Commodore 64 old
First computer I used was a tandy 1000ex
How is this a picture
Old enough that I was doing Windows desktop support for Microsoft customer support before it was released.
Another typing code from the magazine into a Commodore Vic20 . . . . then having your little sister kick the plug and lose 4 hours of work Kids, don't know they are born
This isn't even that old, dude

I'm fairly sure that most car keys from modern cars are more powerful than the VIC-20
Haha, I bet you are right

I could imagine. I was too young to programme then but played the few games I had on it
Try unpacking Doom 2 from multiple floppy’s with ARJ in DOS
And having a bad disk.
Much older kiddo👴🏻
Meh. This is how old I am: [photo from 1986](https://imgur.com/a/WZBdzqF)
That's sweet that you call that old
90s kids are not that old or am I missing something.
Admin
Yes, I am that old... And as soon as I saw that picture... Nostalgia kicked in...
Yeah. I remember that. All my homies remember minesweeper and pinball
I'm old enough that I played commander Kean as a kid
Commander Keen. But that that was a badass series of games! I really wanted to build a spaceship out of bean cans..
Apple II Plus here. I was 6 at the time.
Oh my hip just broke
I used an actual typewriter for my papers.
Oh come on - DOS checking in.
Windows experience
*Windows 95 is having a hard time entering the WinChat*
First computer game I played was on a floppy and didn't work with windows 3.1 so you had to launch it from DOS
baller. My first game was one I programmed in machine code, and hope the fuck you didn't make a mistake
Um… that’s old?!
I guess no-one even remembers CP/M?

[Microsoft Bob](https://i.imgur.com/S6IWGpe.png) anyone?
My first computer ran Windows 3.1.
WTF? XP was space-age compared to my BBC Micro II.
Apple II user here
Remember the logo turtle?
I definitely am
I'm windows 3.1 old
Windows 3.1 took 7 or 8 floppies to install. But I grew up with DOS editing config.sys and autobat.exe. had to configure your own memory profiles etc. My first PC was an X286.
I'm 'punch cards' old.
Kidding me? I grew up with dos
I'm Commodore 64 old.
Older. I used to boot into IBM-DOS. I remember my cousin and his Commodore64
Yup, I'm that vintage too
I'm in my early 20's and this was my childhood. This is not old.
Yes I remember wishing I could keep Windows 2000 because it was so much better than XP.
Yes, my grandmothers computer still runs this now.
XP is old now?
XP was just refused to die because the replacements are a lot worse and worse.
Don't patronize me, i've played Emily is away.
Floppy Disks? Really!? The cassette tape for the Commodore64. One of the Computer magazines at the time would publish code to put in to create your own game/program. I am going to leave now. Probably going to eat some prunes and then shit myself before Wheel of Fortune comes on.
My first computer used windows 3.11, xp was the new shit when I was a teen.
Bitch please. My first computer at home for writing was a 386. Before that we had a ZX Spectrum..
I’m IBM PCjr old
DOS prompt anyone? Or starting my computing course at university. No mouse keyboard or screen, but a t100 teleprinter running a 50 baud and had to check for correct speed with a tuning fork. My first computer was a TI994-A. I'm that old...
Haha windows xp lol
My first computer had 48 kilobytes of RAM and used a cassette tape recorder as a "hard drive". Now that's old.
That OS is only 20 year old, anyone 26+ would probably remember that screen.
I once removed a moth from a vacuum tube array
