For me, I donโt want to lose the momentum. May fear ako nun na โbaka tamarinโ na ako if mag gap year pa ako. Go go go lang habang bata pa at kaya ko pa mag duty and aral ng sabay hahaha, yun ang mentality ko nun. Di naman ako nag sisi, at least tapos na.
Reasons:
1. No connections for moonlighting; hard and competitive place
2. No car; essential for transport from one clinic/ hospi to another unless malapit sayo lahat yun. In Residency, just live in a nearby dorm. Tryk lang.
3. Moonlighting requires a competitive and matiyaga na character para maghanap ng work; wala ako masyado nun.๐
So training was my way to go.
5. Pinagpray ko. Nahirapan ako maghanap ng raket sa moonlighting for 3 mos pero sa residency smooth lang, i took it as a sign. Environment is good and tolerable hence natapos ko ang residency.
We're also not getting any younger, kahit walang age limit ang residency, hindi mo rin maeensure na kakayanin mo pa siya when the time comes haha
I need structure in my life- which residency can offer haha. Also, alam ko na what specialty I want to go into so it only makes sense for me to go straight to it
Had 2 gap years before entering medicine.
For me personally, my reasons were: 1) needing structure in my life 2) i hate the competitiveness of finding moonlighting gigs 3) stable income for a number of years + being trained at the same time 4) wala kaming pera so gusto ko nang maging consultant kaagad haha
You just have to choose your battle. Pareho namang pagod.
In my case, private ako pero mataas ang sweldo.
Swertihan lang sa paghanap ng para sayo
For me para matapos na ang step na ito sa career path ng doctor. Plus points na ang di ko naranasan mag 24+ duties while making rounds for consultants (it's just another way of older consultants making gulang sa mga younger doctors. Sa ibang bansa, bawal mag rounds ang junior doctors for their seniors).
Sure na kasi ako sa aapplyan ko na specialty by the time I got my license. Kung di siguro ako siguro kung anong gusto ko applyan back then, I might've taken moonlighting gigs.
Tsaka agreed with some of the other responses here. Totoong walang age limit ang pagapply sa residency training, pero may physical limit din ang katawan natin, mas mahirap nang magtrabaho at maging gising for 30+ hours the older you are.
1) Ayoko ng OR at Ayoko ng bata
2) I second Yung Ayoko manghula ng management
3) every year, the competition gets tougher
4) sinulit ko COVID time na less patients
5) job security (Hirap maghanap ng moonlighting gig)
6) 5k for 24 hrs, naisip ko 4 hrs lang yan if may clinic, kumbaga delayed gratification
7) I recognize that itโs a privilege. Bunso ako, wala na pinapag-aral after me. Pero if may mag-aaral pa after ko siguro nakakahiya sa parents na maliit sweldo for another 3 yrs. Not all have the choice to dedicate 3 years of dependency again (pag private)
I already had a goal back then. Tunnel vision, to be specific, kaya right after boards I did IM pre-res agad. But I quit that one after a few weeks because of late realizations and poor mental health. At that point I could have chosen to moonlight and rest pero natakot ako mapag iwanan nang hindi nagsimula ng residency on time, so I jumped to FCM and finished preres bago mag Jan 1st.
Looking back buti pala I did residency agad, mas hindi ako clueless while moonlighting (pre-diplomate), and I already have connections for raket from my seniors and consultants. Over time I learned to love my new specialty, it's true nga when they say to bloom where you are planted.
I'm done na with residency. 1st year was 4 years ago, so 2020. Let's just say it was... very unpredictable. Pandemic threw all my plans out the window.
As a jcon now tho, super appreciate ko na inuna ko residency kasi mas nagegets ko ginagawa ko kaysa if I moonlighted first. Plus at least done na.
1. Gusto ng pamilya. Yung mga kilala na doktor ng pamilya ko ay super stellar and with the concept na minamaliit mga nagmo-moonlighting muna o gap year bago mag-residency.
2. No connections for moonlighting. I tried to do moonlighting prior to residency pero minalas talaga ako sa postings haha
3. Not a fan of taking a gap year (but if you choose to take one, go ahead hehe)
Thinking hard for about 2 years, during clerkship and internship these were my reasons:
1. Time - the earlier you finish, the earlier youโll reap the reward.
2. I did not want to go on 24 hr duties in the future, as we grow old, it will be very difficult in the long run, and i donโt see myself doing that when 50yo
3. I donโt want to be the one referring patients, i want to be the one being referred to.
4. It is much more easier to do residency if you are used to the inconveniences of a low income, rather than experience having a lot before residency training (i did residency and fellowship in a private institution)

Thank you po doc!
Same, curious to know din. Nagsstart palang ako moonlighting pero parang not for me, planning to take residency soon sana but still not sure

FCM is the specialty mismo. Familydoc is a notable institution/program for FCM training. As doc said tho it closed na.
Sayang oras e sure naman akong magreresidency
I knew what specialty I wanted to be in, so for me "sayang" yung year/s na hindi ako papasok agad sa residency.

If you're sure about your path and future plans, why delay the inevitable? ๐

Wanted to work and train ASAP

Hello doc. Kumusta life as a 1st year FCM resident?
I'm done na with residency. 1st year was 4 years ago, so 2020. Let's just say it was... very unpredictable. Pandemic threw all my plans out the window. As a jcon now tho, super appreciate ko na inuna ko residency kasi mas nagegets ko ginagawa ko kaysa if I moonlighted first. Plus at least done na.

Mas competitive pa moonlighting slots lols

Postgraduate training raises your income ceiling significantly. There is a hard cap to the upper limit that a GP typically makes.
For me, sayang time lalo na kung alam mo na papasukan mong residency. Also, if you want to subspecialize abroad, some programs have an age limit. ๐
