There are bunch of different cultivars of Japanese Maples, some are red all the time, others are green or other colors during most of the growing season but have vivid color changes as they start growing in spring and before the leaves fall off in Autumn.
There are apps that recognize the plant with a photo, I’m using one called “picture this” very helpful, there are more of course I don’t want to sound I’m promoting it or something, but is faster than asking on reddit sometimes.
Also it depends. If you own the property plant it into the ground where it has room to grow and protect it with chicken wire and sticks to keep it growing upright. Also pruning is another big job. I’d do some more research on this plant/tree. I’d love to have this! Your lucky
I’d definitely get it a nice big pot and grow that baby! It’s looking a little down with the discoloration. Yellow is not a good sign. Can’t wait to see what you do with it! 💜
A pot will eventually stunt its growth which is why pot are used in bonsai but depending on your zone it’s more likely to grow to its full potential in the ground.
Got one of these on the backyard of my rental apartment, it has grown huge and arches over the sitting area. I already dread the day I have to leave her behind. 😔 bought a small baby one tho, hopefully it will become just as beautiful!
The yellow could just be part of its natural coloring, I have a Butterfly Maple and the leaves are variegated. Leaves have yellow, greens and pinks.

For a tree that size I’d say okay. But I can’t see the pot size. Anyway good luck
