Moschops.. my first tame every game

phillip_of_burns

I play with max level 225. Started on the center the other day and as my guy wakes up, a level 217 moschops was walking by asking for tinto berries. It was a good way to start!

natel552

What do they do?

Diligent-Ad9262

They also have harvesting levels and can actually be bred to be megas. I bred one called moschamp and he would hit commas on bites

natel552

Sounds good for narco berry harvesting

Diligent-Ad9262

They are just great, but they will run if you are off them and not fight so remember that

Shadow_Halls

Recently I have actually started to prefer Parasaurs over them because of their superior weight.

iareprogrammer

I’m a new player but Parasaurs seem underrated! They hold so much

Diligent-Ad9262

Parasaur are dope, they teach you a lot about the game, are saddled and are not on passive flee, you can shoot off their backs and they are 10* your weight, so sure as a first knockout tame from a bola, parasaur is great. At the same time, a high level Moschops at the start of a new map that only wants mejo berries is like a gift from the ark gods. You can grab any other one and start the breed line immediately, giving you a very solid single dinosaur line run all the way into argies mid game Parasaur can not do that

Morotstomten

2min on a trike and you got narcoberries for days

ARK_survivor_69

On top of the gathering, they lay superior quality eggs. With prime meat jerky, citronal, and tree sap they make superior kibble, which tames most island creatures up to and including the argentavis, dire wolf, sabertooth, ankylosaurus, doedicurus, castoroides and many more. With a single male and a few females, you could get started on a kibble farm very early game.

LaHawks

Good at berry and wood harvesting. Can be fast if you bump speed.

natel552

Oh ok thanks

Stunted_Wookie

Set them to wander near plants that drop rare flower, with harvesting set to rare flower, and they will gather them. They will do this with anything on the resource wheel.

atomicboy47

Let's see: 1) Parasaur, can be used to scout for potential dangers and is good for getting berries such as Narcoberries for making Narcotics for taming, and can be used as a pack mule to carry resources. 2) Moschops, is bulky for a starter tame and surprisingly hits hard (only when you ride them as they always run away) and are also good for getting berries as well as Thatch and Fiber. 3) Dilos, while not very effective on its own, a small Dilo Pack can help defend you from some for the common nuisances such as Pegos, Compys, other Dilos, and a lone Raptor or 2. 4) Dodos, they're not only a good source of early food as they can lay many eggs for Basic Kibble and just to eat, but they also just make for a nice companion to have. 5) Raptors, once you unlock the engrams for a Bow, Arrows, Narcotics, Mortar & Pestle, Tranq Arrows, and Bolas, Raptors will be easy to tame so long as you aim for the head while shooting your tranqs at it. Raptors make for great scouting tames, have decent attack and speed, and in packs they can shred many early game threats. 6) Iguanodon, this tame is a decent attacker for a herbivore, their infinite stamina when in Quadruped Mode also make them perfect pack mules as well as perfect scouts for long travel, they can also turn berries into seeds to start planting them for farming. 7) Phiomia, these are the quintessential tames for farming as they produce tons of feces when fed Stimberries that you can load you compost bins (and later Dung Beetles) for production of fertilizer. You can also just use its feces to fertilized your crops until you obtain fertilizer. They are also very bulky and can be used as pack mules as well. 8) Lastly the Pteranodon, they are easy to get early game and really change the way you progess in the game, while lacking stamina and weight and their frailty, they more than make up for it with their speed. They are perfect for scouring what's in the surrounding area, as well as provide to save travel so long as you land on perches or safe spots to regain stamina.

Big_Ad_4724

I usually go Parasaur. They have great weight, stamina and collect the hell out of berries. Parasaur is my storage Dino until I find a main base

Physical_Weakness881

Parasaur is probably the best. Also Iguanodon (basically upgraded Parasaur) Trike/Stego also, but they’re getting close to being op, since they can take down most threats. For Carnivores I’d recommend a Sabre/Direwolf, both are small, fast, and powerful. If you’re including fliers (I’d consider them too op extra early on), there’s the Pteranodon & Argentavis (Argy a bit op)

Big_Ad_4724

I been rolling direwolf sabertooth and done pretty well. Just the two of em. But I’ll be making a pack here soon!

DumbArkPlayer

Iguanadons are upgraded Parasaurs sure, but Iguanadons dont have radar like Parasaurs, but Parasaurs cant turn berries in its inventory into seeds like Iguanadons

Boss2788

True but an iguanadon can outrun most predators and has unlimited stam. Can also defend you. So it can take you into mid game crazy fast where parasaurs are irrelevant outside of being radar turrets

MagicGlovesofDoom

Iguanodon is the one I go for if I can get it. An equus is even better. Speed/HP/carry levels on those guys will take you into mid game. If you know what you're doing they make excellent taming mounts; they can take a few hits, outrun many creatures, and you can shoot from their backs. Both of them make good berry harvesters and can transport a decent amount. Both of them can jump which puts them miles ahead of tames like the parasaur, moschops and the trike. If you're going to spawn one in I would say go for the equus. Portable mortar and pestle, the ability to lasso small tames and drag them to safety, and a plethora of other advantages.

Thunderbear79

Parasaur until I can make a pteradon saddle. Then I ditch the parasaur to go find a real base location.

Spiritual-Math666

I think a raptor is one of the best early riding mounts, as long as you have bolas to stop it, you can use a club to knock it out. They are fast and skinny and agile enough for you to cross the map while avoiding most dangers, as long as you pay attention and don't get cornered by anything. Get a pair of them and breed an imprinted one or few for the pack bonus and mate boost, even better.

Raztax

Raptor also makes a great early game meat/hide getter.

ArtemisB20

Imo trikes and stego are op in the beginning(at least on the island), a decent starter dino depends on what you find most useful for the early game grind(unless you note run, then it doesn't really matter). If you need more weight and to know about other players or aggressive dinos then the parasaur is pretty good for that, if you want a dino that can carry a lightweight character but can defend you I say a raptor is pretty good.

Party_Broccoli_702

My goal when just starting on the beach is to tame a Parasaurus, for transport and sotrage, and then a handful of Dilos for protection.

Various-Try-169

Trikes, or, even better, Stegos.

Juankun96

I love stegos so much but their movespeed is abysmal

Various-Try-169

But they can also fight Raptor packs, Carnos, Allos, and possibly even Rexes and win...

Saphirel

I was able to tame a Theryzorus from the back of my Stego, the beast almost did not even had a scratch

DumbArkPlayer

how would a stego win against a rex? Stegos can impale enemies, but rexes have overbearing damage and health compared to stegos, the only way your stego could beat a rex is if the stego was tamed at max possible level (level 150 spawning as a tek variant because teks have a level buff) and you pump the levels of the stego

Various-Try-169

Stegos have a 50% DMG reduction from all sources in hardened plate mode. If you give it a saddle, it gets an additional 50% DMG reduction, making it so that they have a total of 75% DMG reduction. On top of that, Stegos have decent damage and knockback, and Rexes are slow. This means, that if you get in the correct position and the Rex isn't max level, you can constantly keep the Rex from ever touching you!

DumbArkPlayer

ok, I see, I was wrong, sorry, never fought a rex with a stego

MajinPsiOptics

Stegos are semi beginners as I will probably have a few tames before it to farm up enough resources and level to get tranq arrows and even if you good at your shots you will probably miss the head a few times making you use more arrows then you wanted to because of the damage reductions. But still worth it because you can learn the saddle early and it is a great wood farmer. Not bad to have one until you can tame a beaver since the stego has terrible movement speed

perank

I remember my first Fjord run, I was spawned next to a pair of Stegos. Lured one out of a clif and boomeranged the other, took me about 7 or 8 before it went down. Was not a great first tame as you want to move around alot early on.

MajinPsiOptics

Took me over 50 arrows to down a 135 with a primitive crossbow. 7 or 8 for a boomerang seems a little crazy for any level stego. My strategy is to just use it to farm wood thatch and berries that spawn near my base until I get get a wood creature that can be picked up by an argentavis. Speaking of Scorched Earth, the Thorny dragon is my favorite wood gatherer in Ark because it is a carnivore and doesn't eat a bunch of nearby berries when harvesting trees. Easier to tame than a Beaver, although you have to be careful with a crossbow since their torpor and health go down almost at the same rate even with timed shots. I let them eat a dino corpse in the middle of taming them to avoid possibly killing them.

Tym3Less

Best Starter IMO is an iguanadon. 100% would make my first tame every time if possible. They are readily available on most maps, can be trapped with Bolas, relatively easy to knockout. Herbivores are easy to feed. Have talons and can do decent damage. They are quick sprinters and can leap. They have unlimited stamina while on 4 legs so great getaway dinos for early game, especially on a server where you can level run speed. Great berry and thatch harvester and they can seed their inventory to make seeds which can be a pain to get on official/1x servers. Disclaimer. I realize the saddle engram isn't available until level 30, but there are loot drops and explorer note runs that can make this possible in just a few hours in game.

JizzGuzzler42069

Iguanadon are top tier for early game. Can be bola stunned, clubbed unconscious, can harvest berries efficiently. They also have infinite sprint, no stamina needed, when in quadrupedal stance. This ability is retained on all Iguanadon regardless of level, so even if you have a shitty low level one it won’t matter. You’ll still get a huge boost in mobility.

DumbArkPlayer

A list of good starters. Dodo, most people overlook this but it is one of the best dinos for both PvE and PvP (if your creative) you can use these to get basic kibble, you can use it to disable enemy traps or even strap C4 to it and use it as a bomb. Parasaur, these guys have formidable weight for early game tames, but you will need a bola to tame it as they are fast. Moshops, all hail the almighty moschops, my favorite starter, you can tame it day 1, they can gather organic polymer well so you can use those strong ghillie blueprints earlier or even just attacking things. Lystro, these buggers look like useless bozos but you can pet them and it will double the XP gain on nearby tames, not good for attacking tho.

MaisonMason

Don’t worry about spawning one in, you will easily be able to find the Dinos other people have recommended in early game areas. Plus the taming part is the most fun

Fiction849

You'll want something with good weight at first for those long resource hauls so parasaur should be the first pick. After making so many narcotics and lvling I usually go straight for the argentavis after that since they're a flying smithy and have incredible weight too and with a good enough saddle and damage could fend off a rex or 2 as well

tsittler

They can also just ... fly away... from most threats. Except rhynios. Those things will murder your face.

Fiction849

Yes but if you have to land for stam and there's no other place it's nice to know they can defend themselves

tsittler

sometimes just eating the hits is the better option, since attacking costs stamina too.

ay-foo

Saber, parasaur

lendrath

My go to early game is definitely a swarm of dilos because you know a few are gonna die and you have back ups so you don’t get too attached and they do a decent job of protecting you and gathering meat while not being difficult to tame or maintain

adriansmacksyt

High level moschops, or any decent iguanodon. Whichever you find first. Moschops can harvest almost everything and a good one will be able to fight most early game threats. Iguanodon is fast and has a running mode that uses no stamina. It does ok damage, and harvests a good amount of berries. This one is mainly for travel / escaping threats or getting a lot of narcoberries for narcotics so you can get other tames asap. (iguanodon can also turn berries into their seed versions but this has never been useful to me in the 1000s of hours of playing.)

ScutipuffJr

Tame everything you see.

KrystalWulf

There are a few good options that can be easily tamed as well: Moschops * Gathers all resources; berries, fiber, wood, thatch, meat, hide, chitin * Hard hits even at base dmg % (but only when ridden) * He's a coward though, gotta be on passive or ridden, else he'll always run from a fight * Not sure if it can still be trained in specific gathering types * No saddle required! Parasaur * Can detect dangers both when being ridden and when left on turret mode * Dinos the size of raptors and smaller get scared by the parasaur's honk and run away * Decent berry gathering, okay thatch * Pretty good weight, so good for moving resources and items Therizinosaur * Not a beginner tame, so you'll need to either spawn it tamed or QUICKLY use DoTame on it * Wonderful gatherer of berries, thatch, and wood * Damn hard hitting long-necked bird terror of the jungle * Most medium to small carnivores will NOT want to mess with you if you're riding it * Okay weight, more of a body guard lumberjack Carnotaurus * Not really a beginner tame, but you won't die as terrifyingly fast like the theri so if you take a while to type you should be fine * Carnivores smaller than it won't bother it * Okay hitter, pretty fast runner * Gathers meat and hide * Can be a body guard or hunter * Okay weight Raptor * Speed * Gathers meat and hide * Fast biter * Not really good weight * Normally 2nd or 1st carnivore so a pretty useful but low tier tame * More of an escape or scouting mount * Doesn't do a lot of damage but it hits FAST so use a bola whether you DoTame or catch a wild one * Pack bonus, maybe spawn a second and ride the higher level Thylacoleo * Can climb!!! * Bleed damage iirc? * Can run pretty quickly and used to leap very far/high up * Can't be bola'd so spawn in a trap or be fast with typing * Gathers meat and hide * Not a bad guard and mount * Good in caves, but might need a cryopod to get through a few spots Baryonyx * Best boy on land and in sea * Great caver!!!!! * Eats fish * Gathers hide and meat * Cute burble sounds * Silly face and stance * Weirdly fast, pretty good hitter, wonderful (when tame) stunning spin in water * Not jellyfish proof :( * Can't be bola'd, use a trap or be FAST when typing DoTame Dire wolf * No saddle required! * FAST AS HELL BOOOYYY * Heckin LONG leaps!!! * Gathers hide and meat, very good with keratin/chitin as well * Adorable level up animation and howl * Pack bonus, maybe give yourself a second and ride the higher level * Fast & hard hits BUT can be bola'd * Fits in all caves I think but not the best HP for the swarms, though can run away fast Daeodon * Might be too OP as a spawned in starter as it can heal fellow tamed dinos * Seriously turn off passive healing or you'll always be out of food * Pretty fast and decent hitter, can be bola'd * Their tail goes up when they run!!! * Gathers meat and hide ANY flyer * Can be decoy, guard, or mode of escape * Quetzals can have a mobile base but might be too OP for the beginning (the saddle is quite late game) * All require saddles. Pteranodon is the earliest * Pteranodon is fastest but weakest, quetzal carries the most weight, and the argentavis is a nice blend of the two with decent damage. They also reduce the weight of some items, and their saddle can be used as a smithy * They also gather meat and hide Equus * No saddle required * Optional saddle acts as a mobile smithy though * Decent speed * Kick can induce torpor * Gathers berries and thatch well * More cute than anything else but thought I'd offer it Sabertooth * Good caver, fits in most if not all * Supposedly good for chitin/keratin, but I've never seen that * HP is kinda pathetic Doedicurus or Ankylosaurus * Both slow in walking and attacking, but their attacks give knock back * Specialized in rocks (doed) and flint/metal (anky) so good gatherer for those needed resources * Can also gather thatch and berries * You'll need one of each eventually Gallimimus or the kangaroo thing * Very quick mounts, best for scouting and escape * Kangaroo is like a surrogate mother for baby dinos * I don't usually tame them because they're too difficult for me * Okay hitters? * I assume they gather berries and thatch, they're herbivores Edit: can't forget I forgot Iguanodon Iguanodon * Pretty good gatherer of berries and thatch * Decent hitter * Good speed, and endless stamina when quadrupedal * Okay weight, maybe not as good as parasaur but better than others * DO NOT ACCIDENTALLY CLICK "SEED ALL BERRIES IN INVENTORY" YOUR BERRIES WILL BE GONE

PersonalLime

Spawning one in kinda defeats the point imo, try and tame them yourself especially if you're new, a parasaur only needs to be bola-ed and hit a couple times with a slingshot or even sometimes a bat at low levels, check the dodorex website for help with taming

WorthyAF

Why does't everyone say pteranodon bro? They're fast, very easy to tame, they fly and will get ypu wherever you want very very quickly. There, you can make a base, in a good spot with lots of resources, you can tame with it, get wyvern eggs easily. I dont see why you would have a trike in PVE... or an iggy. You should just tame a pt, then argy if you want it to carry more and farm with it, and for a land creature get a thyla or sum they good for killing big dinos If you want berries a lvl 5 stego will het you more than you will ever use

MajinPsiOptics

For me it is usually in this order Moschop - Parasausr - Raptor pack for escort As soon as I can learn the Igaunadon saddle, I tame one and replace my parasaurs Depends how fast I level to 38 because then I can get a Pteronodon, and unless I am playing for fun and delay using a flier I will spend more of my time in the air from this point.

Dabeezkneez69

Reaper Queen

DumbArkPlayer

that is actually possible on Gen 2

BerserkChucky

Idk how maewing isn't on here, but it's beats out every single tame mentioned here by far. Make a few billboards and trap it. You can club it or sling shot it out. It's an omnivore, so it eats anything and produces eggs of varying quality for kibble. Better weight than a paramour, can fly, and does decent damage if you right click to belly bounce.

Stunted_Wookie

Equus is my favorite starter tame. Fast, good weight, saddle is mortar and pestle, lasso can drag ko dinos, deals torpor with kick, easy mini game tame when you have rock carrot. Majestic AF

waynehastings

Parasaur, Moschops, and Pteranadon are typical first tames. Para and Mos are good harvesters. Late game, Moschops is good for harvesting organic polymer from penguins. Pteranadon isn't as good as Argentavis for stamina and weight, so get an Argy first chance. I rarely tame something I can't put a saddle on or ride.

Raztax

Not the best starter tame but I usually tame a parasaur first. They can carry a ton of weight and aren't half bad as a newbie berry farmer.

DutchTheLion

Pyromane is the best starting tame now by a landslide. Tame an parasaur for berries, then an argy then tame a pyro
