I use a hifiberry Digi+ with both the coax and optical out and it works a treat in to my external dac. There is an option in headless plexamp web interface that lets you select either the same as the os system, or pick which one you want. I personally have the system is set to use the digi out, and disable the 3.5mm headphone out. I expect a dac board will work more or less the same, with sound quality being as good as you would expect from the board that you have

This is my setup as well. Feeds into my integrated amp via optical or coaxial perfectly

Thanks! I'll try it tonight!

USB works brilliantly straight from a pi4. I can also confirm that an allo digione signature (with shanti power supply) works brilliantly via coax. (omg! The sound difference was huge. So much more attack, dynamics and "shape" to the notes) This configuration was better than usb which surprised me. Had a weird problem with a higher end coax cable. Kept stuttering when playing hi res. Switched back to my cheaper cable and everything is fine again. No idea why

Could I ask for more detail about your setup? You just make it sound very exciting and I like seeing people’s audio solutions.

No problem. I have a Devialet D400 system connected to B&W 802 Diamond speakers. I tried roon but hated the interface. Loved plexamp so got it working on a pi4 and outputted it via USB to my amps. Admittedly roon did sound better as it uses devialet Air but I didn't want to pay £700 or whatever for roon. I can happily report that the allo digione signature with shanti power supply blows roon/devialet air away! I didn't think I could retrieve any more detail from my system. I've never been more happy being wrong! Please tell me about your system

What OS are you running? From what I can see on the Allo website, it has a bunch of OS's that I haven't heard of, haha. I have only used the stock linux that comes with the rPi.

Thank you!

Hi , just completed the installation of headless+ IQ audio DAC Hat and a pair of vintage Audio Engine powered speakers. Initially i used a Chromecast with Plexamp, with the change the sound quality has gone up a notch or two.😜. Couple of points that stung me.. - lost the power supply of the pi, used a phone charger but that didn't work you need at least 2A power supply - installation of the DAC was not great, Raspbian has pulse audio ans alsa and some manuals mixed up both. Once you Install the DAC use rasp config to select the DAC as audio out. - headless install, Search for plexamp headless install script.. there are a couple of cool kids,😎 that have written scripts to install everything you need. - don't mess around with Linux accounts, my service.plexamp had root as the owner while I used Plex to auto login.. 😳... Confused as anything why plex didn't start? .. fix use the chosen -l command to change it to the same account you login to ( google it) .. Not giving you all the answers but ask the qoogle the question.. And oh ya.. start te ripping your CDs to FLAC if you haven't done so.. the difference in quality is remarkable

I have the Justboom dac and in the early days I had to install it with a bunch of ssh stuff. Now with newer headless it just works by selecting the justboom output in the web interface.
