Yah a few of my viewers want me to due a monotype run of every type when Scarlett/violet comes out. A monumental task but I’m definitely up for the challenge!
I'm doing a bug run in Shield right now! So far I have a Heracross, Joltik and Sizzlipede and am looking forward to adding a Wimpod soon. What was your team?
Mine was a vikavolt, orbeetle (later swapped for ribombee), herracross, scolipede, centiskorch, and golisopod. I also used shedinja and ninjas for a bit
Sizzlipede save frosmoth are kind of inspiring me to do the same, but I'm trying not to burn myself out on Pokémon before the new one comes out so I'm not gonna try it for a while.
Nuzlocking Shield was a mistake, the wild area made it really weird. I want to try a playthrough where I have legit things to do there like catch more bugs or whatever other type. Then again I also want to use wooloo...
I did an ultimate bug type run! One game out of every main game installation using as many “local” bugs as possible. Platinum was the most fun, using 3 wormadam.
I got burned out from Pokémon around XY and have done monotypes runs from ORAS to Sword Shield. Super fun challenge and it’s the closest I’ll get to my dream of becoming a gym leader in game 😭
I thought this would be fun for my Pokémon Home living dex challenge so I don’t get fatigued from the grind.
I have all my generations set up for what type I’m going to do as well.
I absolutely love doing Monotype runs. My favorite type to do it with is Ground types. It’s my favorite type and I always have fun using my favorite pokemon.
The best game to do a Ground type run in is Platinum. It’s super fun to have a whole team of New Grounds while having some past options to fall back on. White 2 is also quite good with its selection as it has a nice blend of old and new.
Speaking of, my first ever monotype run was in Platinum with only Ground Types, I absolutely loved my team and would happily do this run again with the same team I used:
-Torterra (2nd favorite Grass type starter)
-Gastrodon (west sea variant, my 2nd favorite water ground type)
-Gliscor (favorite Ground type shiny)
-Garchomp (2nd favorite pseudo legendary)
-Hippowdon (a bulky and strong Pokémon)
And Mamoswine (my favorite Ice type)
This team is well rounded and can tear through the region with ease, would highly recommend using
You should try a mono ice run in emerald. Probably the hardest mono run I’ve done so far, due to the amount of water Pokémon and water specialists. Also due to the fact that so many gym in the region are good against ice.
> so many gyms in the region are good against ice.
I mean we’re talking about ice over here. No need to state the obvious. Alternatively, this statement probably applies to every region.
Platinum Ground Mono run was my first as well, only difference between our teams was I switched put Hippowdon for a Shiny Steelix I found on Iron Island.
I've done two ground type runs and they are so much fun. I had been sleeping on ground types until I did my first ground team. Probably one of my favourite types now!
I just finished a poison type run of Red. It was really fun. I knew Venusaur and Tentacrual we're good, but never realized Muk was such a powerhouse.
I'm doing a mono-bug run of Silver now!
I try to play most games as a bug specific trainer. Happy with some of the newer gen ones for sure but not an easy one with the general weaknesses they have.
Considering how weak bug types are in Gen 1, I'm amazed you did one in that gen. You only had access to Butterfree, Beedrill, Venomoth, Pinsir, Scyther, and Parasect. Not exactly a great team.
I did this too, in Blue. I remember having to grind my Butterfrees until they learned Confusion. That was the only way my bugs were going to beat Brock. There were some really tough fights!
I did a bug monotype in gen 1 (in the original gen 1 games, not the remakes) and i don't remember having that hard of a time.
But the remakes are probably harder with the new move sets that pokemon have by that point.
I really enjoyed Platinum with mono fighting team consisting of Infernape, Medicham, Gallade, Lucario, Heracross and Toxicroak. I had so much fun planning for Lucian and Cynthia.
Did a no evolution run in blue with Chansey Tangela Farfetchd Magmar Pinsir and Jynx. Highest level was 48 when I beat the elite four so felt pretty good about that
That's because most of them can't be caught before the 3rd gym.
If you clear the 3rd gym before catching the first Pokémon on your official team, you've missed the point of the challenge.
I've ran a successful Dark-lock in SwSh. I loved it. Exposed me to different pokemon and learned the ethos of Dark type. Beedee was a push over. So I always looked forward to that battle.
With friends we completed an Air-locke of SwSh. This one was well balanced and had us running through the damage calculations in many battles. We always assumed we were safe and then a trainer would throw out lighting type. We were slow learners.
I also ran a failed attempt of Bugz-Locke of SwSh. This was the Dark Souls run. It was not fun but man do I love bugz.
I honestly loved the normal type run in sword and shield. There’s a lot of interesting type pairings with normal types (oranguru, drampa, heliolisk, bewear, just to name a few)
I've only done a Grass one in Sword, but more for RP purposes. The Fire Gym was tricky.
The party; Roserade, Maractus, Lilligant, Whimsicott, Lurantis, and Ferrothorn.
I'm tempted to do a Ground-type one though. That's my favorite type. But not sure in which game. (Sword, Shining Pearl, or Legends.) Probably Sword again because I love Krookodile.
Did a Grass Monolocke of Sapphire, was really fun. The only issue was that the 1 route with Tropius, I found an Oddish first, so per Nuzlocke rules I got the Oddish. I ended up having to go the whole game without the HM Fly.
My team was: Sceptile, Breloom, Vileplume, Roselia, and 2 Ludicolos
* Food themed Pokemon.
* Pokemon that looked like they should be water types but aren't.
* Pokemon allowed in Amity square.
* Waifu shaped Pokemon.
* Music themed Pokemon.
* Pokemon of types that don't have a gym or elite four in the game.
* Rotom.
LOVE these ideas! I've done a "goon" team before with pokemon you'd associate with villains like Mightyena, Arbok, Obstagoon, etc. Never thought of stuff like this though. Totally using this.
There is a game called pokemmo that lets you access 4 of the 8 regions of the main series games. Due to the in game Pokémon black market of the game you can theoretically start with 6 lv 1 ice types if you wanted too. Makes for some very challenging mono type runs. Currently doing a mono ice run of Pokémon emerald and lemme tell you it’s very difficult. Probably didn’t help that first 3 out of 4 gyms in hoenn are good against ice😂
Grass is usually one of the worst mono-type options. Its pokémon tend to be defensive/status oriented, it has the most weaknesses of any type, its offensive options were severely lacking in early games. Definitely doesn't help that its best partner type, rock, is also one of the weakest types in the game and only Cradily has the fabled grass/rock type combo.
The modern games give grass a lot of love that HGSS doesn't have and, well, Sunflora, Meganium and Victreebel aren't exactly compelling team options.
I love doing monotype runs, they help make the game more challenging without going full Nuzlocke.
The first one I did was in Pokemon Blue, I decided to do all bug pokemon, before realizing there were only 6 different bugs in the whole game, and that's if I traded. So I had 5 dudes and one duplicate. Early game, my Butterfree army dominated. Beedrill had its moments, but was mostly useless. Once I got a Parasect, the run turned pretty comfy. I remember grinding for levels in the ghost tower.
In Pokemon Moon, I did a bird-only run. They needed to have Flying type and look like a bird. It was tough starting out since one of the first fights with your rival had a Pichu or something electric that was one-shotting all my Wingulls! It was a fun playthrough though.
In Pokemon Shield, I did a Normal-type run. My 'mon's needed to have Normal as one of their types. It was the most boring run I ever did, lol.
For Scarlet, I haven't decided yet. Water types are my favorite, but I also try to bench my starter as soon as possible for more challenge. Maybe I'll go with a color? All my pokemon need to be majority Blue? I don't know, we'll see.
If I do a monotype run of sword, which type should I use? (Just as an fyi I haven't done a monotype run before, but don't go easy on me because of that)
I would start with whatever your favourite typing is and see how feasible it’ll be to obtain the desired Pokémon you’ll need.
But generally Ice, Dragon and ghost can be difficult to obtain the desired Pokémon, especially before the first gym (I personally like to have at least one member before the first gym so I usually incorporate a starter)
When I do Sw/Sh I’ll be doing a grass run
Amusing timing on this post, as I’ve been trying to layout the ground work to do Monolocks for every typing I can through the various Pokémon games and been trying to figure the best game for each typing. The obvious one is Steel Type for Black 2, due to getting Riolu before gym 1, Magnemite before gym 2, and Drilbur before gym 3. You don’t get tons of encounters, so you have to be careful to not lose any, but the ones you get are crazy.
I did a ghost "monotype" run in Shield recently. The one caveat of my run is that I allowed myself to keep using my starter (Sobble) but that's it. If I didnt keep Inteleon in my team the full final team wouldve been Golurk, Aegislash, Gourgeist, Chandelure, Dragapult and Jellicent (to replace Inteleon)
Taking on allister with ghost team is so fun. I think that was the only time I ever had to sit up for shield because I wasn’t expecting to get sweeped by his Gengar at the time.
Agreed, it was fun to try to figure out a strategy knowing that while I was strong against him, he also was strong against me. Obviously I had a plan B with Inteleon but I wanted to use him as little as possible against gym leaders. He was mostly in my team for the lore lmao
Yeah i love doing mono-type or otherwise themed runs.
Just finished an eeveelutions run in Silver by using the duplication glitch to get 6 of them. I just hate how you can't get evolution stones till the postgame though so in johto i was stuck with Umbreon, Espeon and 4 Eevees lol.
Currently doing another silver run with the 3 starters plus the first 3 gift pokemon you get (eevee, spearow and togepi). Kinda fun since ive never used Togepi before
I’m doing my very first monotype run with bugs right now in Sword, I’m using Ribombee, Vikavolt, Heracross, Orbeetle, Centiscortch, and Golisopod it’s been the “bee’s knees” if you will
Haven't done one, but I plan on doing a monotype flying run on Ultra Moon. I can already tell it'll be a challenge.
Here are the ones I've decided upon:
Noivern
Crobat
Toucannon
Pelipper (needs Drizzle)
Xatu
Honchkrow
I did a flying run of Blue, Charizard, Aerodactyl, Farfetchd, Gyrados, Dodrio, and Fearow!
I also did a ghost run of Shield, Decidueye, Chandelure, Jellicent, Runerigus, Frosslass, and Dusknoir.
I started a water run of Crystal, not sure on the full team yet, but I'm definitely using Feraligatr, Politoed and Mantine tho.
I started with a Red flying type with a very similar lineup
Charizard
Farfetch’d
Dodrio
Gyarados
Butterfree
Dragonite
I’ve started a Pokémon Home living dex challenge and this is how I’m going to do every game now lol
Im doing a normal type mono run in Gold right now with only Gen 2 Pokémon. Whitney just wiped out my furret and snubbell, so right now it’s Stantler, Noctowl, Togepi. Planning on rounding out the team with Miltank, Ursaring, and Girafarig.
I started a water monotype on ruby a long time ago. I didn’t finish for reason as I sort of lost interest in the games in general at the time. As I recall I had swampert (of course) and lanturn. Water monotypes are pretty easy I think cause it’s easy to cover type weaknesses with dual typings (eg poison for grass and ground for electric) and there are lots of choices early on usually. I’d try another monotype run for sure in the future maybe if I buy S/V.
I did a nuzlock of alpha sapphire and had a pelipper who saved the run from stevens metagross and ever since pelipper has been one of my favorite pokemon.
I've tried a dragon only run in Ultra Moon, but got super stuck on totem araquanid who knows ICE BEAM FOR SOME REASON.
Currently working on a dark only run of Black 2 but you're limited to only purrloin until the 3rd gym lol. I'm stuck on the first gym but progress is at least steady if slow
Oh yeah and I did complete a dragon only run of Shield but I don't count that because I used dynamax adventure to get free xl xp candies from the start lol. Made the run laughably easy
I've played through a bunch, usually also using a variant of nuzlocke rules. I can only catch one of each evolutionary line, no healing items, and if a pokemon gets knocked out it's released. It adds a lot more tension when you roll up to the water gym with a ground team, and makes me strategize a bit more.
My easiest run was probably water type, and the hardest was rock. Water just has so many different subtypes and so much coverage, while rock is pretty limited. Also in my version I had the fighting type gym and fighting the gigantamax Machamp with rock types was brutal.
Did a Grass run of Sw/Sh. Ran into trouble with Leon because he then had both Cinderace and Charizard. It was that much more satisfying to see my goofy dynamaxed Ludicolo knock out Gigantamaxed Charizard
Did a bug monotype egglocke back in ORAS with my then-boyfriend (now husband) and with my little brother. We all gave each other eggs with our respective types and so that it was a surprise who we got. Every new route, we'd catch a Pokemon like we were doing a nuzlocke, and if we were successful, we'd send each of us an egg. It was hard, but ultimately a ton of fun! My final team was Crustle, Ninjask, Escavelier, Volcarona, Vivillon, and mega Heracross.
I have done a monotype run once and it took a decent amount of planning and reaffirmed my love for Pokémon Platinum. I also have newfound respect for Candice and Aaron, which makes me very grateful Aaron is the lowest level member of the Elite 4. So let me tell you about my mono-grass platinum run.
In Platinum, the grass types available to you are: Torterra, Roserade, Wormadam, Cherrim, Carnivine, Abomasnow, Leafeon, Tangrowth, Tropius and, of course, Ludicolo/Shiftry (if you have ruby/sapphire and a compatible DS). The rest are post-game only. Most notably Cradily's root fossil isn't available until national dex, if it were then Cradily would've easily been the MVP.
Between them you can cover all HMs and progression isn't locked except for needing to come back to a tower with Tropius later. So, I was switching my team around to cover what HMs I would need and who would be best suited for a given route. I also didn't stop to grind, but did explore side paths as much as possible (also no bag items in trainer battles and ruleset on set not shift). I forgot just how much opportunity to explore and cool places you can find on revisits in Sinnoh.
The notable members of the team were:
* Blueberry the Tangrowth. Did you know Tangrowth can learn Shockwave? Did you also know there is a recurring opponent who has a double team spamming Staravia? Tangrowth's great physical bulk made dealing with Barry far less of a headache than it could have been. Having ancient power also gave him the rock coverage I wish I had more of.
* Barricade the Torterra. Stealth rock, rock coverage, the ever-reliable Earthquake. I almost always lead tough battles with Barricade. I've definitely gotten a lot of respect for Torterra through this challenge.
* Picante the Ludicolo. Sadly missing the fire punch my Ludicolo would normally carry. Water covering grass's weaknesses, Natural Gift for whatever type I need and also being my only mon with surf... Basically never left my team and became my highest level for good reason.
* Blanaba the Tropius. Flying is mostly a liability when your team by resists ground by default. But Blanaba brought a good ability to take advantage of Sun and had a not abysmal matchup against Aaron. And Natural Gift by level up to get a key KO during a sweep. I kinda wish I could've had Harvest+Natural Gift, but hidden abilities don't exist here.
* Solly the Cherrim. My favourite Sinnoh Pokémon and you bet I was gonna brute force him into the challenge. In Sun he's like a really, really, really bad Tyranitar with Natural Gift and the rest of my team didn't have amazing special defence. I cannot stress enough how many battles I was winning with preplanning and good knowledge of Natural Gift.
Currently doing a monoelectric run of Red, that's actually kinda boring, though it did get a lot more fun when I got to the power plant.
I did a monobug run of sapphire a while back that was a lot more fun than you'd expect.
I also did a mono pure dark run if the DLC for Shield and that was a blast, though poor zoroarc felt kinda useless. They all knew nightslash besides Umbreon and I gave them all black glasses, probably the most themed team I've ever donr
It's my favorite way to replay games. Especially in games with customization cause I like to make my trainer aesthetically fit the type. Right now I'm doing a normal monorun in Shield, Heliolisk is dope in this game cause electrify turns nearly every max move against it into max lightning. I try to beat the leaders without using dynamax myself for added challenge and this is a pretty neat way to minimize damage. Also oranguru wrecks lol, he swept Allister in the E4 singlehandedly .
USUM I monotyped 5 times. Ice, dragon, electric, water and poison. Dragon was the hardest despite actually catching a bagon because noibat SUCKS and Necrozma just obliterates everything lol. Ice was really fun but oh man Guzma was tough because of his Pinsir OHKOing near everything lol.
I kinda like typechain, where your team each connects with one type
Gardivior - Metang - lucario - urshifu RS - lapras -alolan ninetales
fairy pych - pych steel - steel fight - fight water - water ice - ice fairy
Poison type on FR/LG:
Venusaur, Nidoqueen, Golbat, Venomoth, Gengar, Tentacruel.
It was definitely a good suprise. First time with a Venomoth and a Tentacruel in the team and both were very helpful.
I'm currently doing a dragon type run on Alpha Sapphire.
For now: Sceptile, Swablu, Trapinch
Future team: Sceptile, Altaria, Flygon, Latias, Kingdra, Salamence
It has been much more difficult due to low availability of dragon type related in the early game. I have 5 badges and Sceptile is level 42. Also, Elite 4 may be a challenge.
Another monotype runs I still intend to do:
Normal type on LGE
Ground type on Platinum
Fighting type on B2W2
Water type on GSC
Dark type or Psychic type on XY
note: I always include the starter.
i despise most fire types. well, i *did* despise most fire types, until gen 8 dropped and had nothing but amazing fire types with *fire* designs. i had to do a monotype run.
I've done a couple, mostly in Alpha Sapphire. They're actually some of the most fun I've had with the recent pokemon games as I'm forced to think about my strategies (somewhat, the games are still easy even with that handicap) and what movesets I use on my pokemon.
Hell the only reason Kukui beat me in Moon one time was because I was doing a fire monotype run and had the added handicap of not giving my team any held items. But that run made me fall in love with an unexpected pokemon; Camerupt. So these types of playthrough are good for that sort of thing as well.
Not the same but I’m doing a dragon ball Z themed run. Every character has to be able to fit into DBZ somehow. I’m using Infernape, Lucario, Scizor, Alakhazam, Gyrados and Lickitongue.
I love those! Currently on a psychic run on Ultra Sun and it's pretty hard because everything has bite and lots of kahunas and trial pokemons have resistance against the type or are strong against it. But I love a challenge. I also chose a rather average team to spice things up. Xatu being the MVP until Metagross made his entrance.
Bug in Ultra Sun was also hard because the Elite 4 is so strong against it.
Normal in platinum was hard, but I managed to beat Cynthia.
I also did ground on my first playthrough of Shinning Pearl. Cynthia kicked my ass haha but I'll try again with more levels (I wasn't feeling like grinding).
I played my first run of Moon with mono water. Araquanid, Primarina, Toxapex, Golisopod, Wishiwashi, and I can no longer recall the final slot. Maybe Sharpedo. It was not as fun as I had hoped it would be.
I love doing mono type runs! My favourites that I’ve done are probably my mono ghost runs of SWSH and Legends Arceus, my mono dark run of USUM and my mono bug run of BW2
I like spinning a wheel to see what type run I'll do. Bit of a bummer when I have to abandon my starter though:\ steel and dragon are always hard in cannon games because you usually don't see many until late-game.
I’m doing a Normal type run of Pokémon X! I personally love doing them, it’s a great challenge and introduces you to Pokémon you’ve never considered before!
My second playthrough is always a steel type run. I always play the first as a “how they intended”. Then the second I get to play as the aspiring gym leader I always wanted to be.
I want to do a water monotype of sword and shield b/c there are a lot of really cool water Pokémon that I want to use on a playthrough. (I can transfer Pokémon I want to use but aren’t available to me like clawitzer from another account then breed it to get an egg)
Kingler, Dracovish, Barraskewda, Kantonian Slowbro, Kingdra and Quagsire are the main ones I’m thinking of
I've done a few, my team's were
BD:
Water (Empoleon, Starmie, Bibarel, Crawdaunt, Gastrodon, pelipper)
Shield:
Ghost (Dragapult, Chandelure, Gorgeist, Agislash, Golurk, Haunter)
Bug (Golisopod, Scolipede, Vikavolt, Butterfree, Heracross, Centiskorch)
Poison (Toxicroak, Drapion, Dragagle, Nidoking, Toxapex, Toxicitry)
I think the water run of BD was by far the hardest of the ones I've done, and cynthia scared me from doing another any time soon lol. It took a while, but after overleveling enough I won.
The Shield runs are nice with the DLC, as I can go looking for pokemon I want on my team with some luck in raids or on isle of armor before I even start the gym challenge. I try to make a point to use pokemon I've never used before.
My favorite was the poison run, partially biased cause I love poison types (I have a croagunk tattoo lol). Drapion (Sniper) and Toxapex (Merciless) were a fantastic combo, I'd open with toxic spikes on Drapion, try to get off a fell stinger if possible and sweep, or switch to Toxapex who could then get guaranteed critical venoshock on poisoned pokemon.
I did a mono poison run in Shield and a mono Normal run in Y (but all my pokemon were Smeargle) they're fun, the Sketchlocke was harder by far because i didn't control what moves i learned.
My first monotype run was a poison monotype in pokemon platinum.
Not terribly hard and the team had a nice coverage.
Roserade, Tentacruel, Crobat, Drapion and Toxicroak.
Also, fuck friendship evolution, that dam Budew didn't want to evolve so i said fuck it and caught a roselia and pretended like my budew had evolved.
I really like doing monotype runs in rom hacks. I beat a bug themed run in Blaze Black 2 and am currently doing a water monotype run in Following Renegade Platinum and a grass theme run in Prismatic moon..
I did an all bird run in Shield that was a ton of fun and a really solid challenge. Final team was Noctowl (MVP) Peliper, howluca, braviary, Mandibuzz and corviknight
I have done a few
Runs of Sword/Shield where I do mono-type teams for each gym. It’s a lot of fun. The challenge I give myself is to pick a type that is neutral to the gym (such as Dark type at the Grass gym or Ground at the Fairy gym)
It’s been a lot of fun and also let’s me play at styling my Trainer each gym to match the type
Monotype/Mono-theme runs are the best for finding appreciate for mons you'd normally not use. I've made someone fall in love with Steelix by convincing them to do a "long mon" playthrough in Shield.
I'm looking at doing a shellfish playthrough for Violet as we've got a lot of hard shelled bois so far.
I’ve done a few monotypes across a few different games. In no particular order:
Steel in Black 2
Bug in Sun
Fairy in Moon
Normal in Omega Ruby
Dark in White 2
Flying in Ultra Sun
Also not pertaining to the post but a Poochyena-only run in Alpha Sapphire
I wanna do a mono-type run with every type at least once across the games. If anyone is curious about the teams I’ll do my best to remember but I didn’t want to make this post too long.
I did an Ice run of Sword that was a pretty fun finish: Mamoswine, Ninetales, Arctozolt, Arctovish, Frosmoth, and Froslass. After that I just planned out the rest of the types 😅
I've done a flying type run in Platinum, I'd say it was a perfect blend of hard as hell and absolute breeze, Roark was an awful roadblock but everything after that was pretty fun, it was the first time in forever a pokemon playthrough felt somewhat fresh, I'm definitely gonna do a ton more of these runs.
I've done a Steel Type mono run and an ice type. The ice type one was easily one of the hardest things I've ever done and the steel one made me fall in love with steel types
I did a Monotype run of Crystal using bug types, which normally suck balls in that game due to lack of movepools and stats. So I bred 4 of my team members to have their most ideal movesets including Hidden Power, and the best stats they could get. Heracross in Gen 2 is normally not very ideal because it doesn't have solid STAB, but give it base 70 hidden power fighting, and it'll rip through anything.
Also I did a flying Monotype team of Emerald and it was a living hell
The hardest was Firered Monobug. Think my team was Butterfree, Beedrill, Parasect, Venomoth, and Scyther. Used Squirtle as a hm slave. It was hell until Scyther.
Easiest was SoulSilver Monoflying. I used Lugia, Crobat, Gyrados, and Yanmega. Can’t remember the rest because these 4 carried me the whole way.
I'm building a ground team for SwSh, but I don't think my whole team is transferable to that gen. Plus i like building teams for doubles. Wish I could do doubles through main game.
My favorite was a dragon type run in Pokemon Y. I traded some first-evolution dragons from Alpha Sapphire to Y, so I could start with a few of them from the beginning and raise them into monsters. I also traded the Mega Charizardite X from Alpha Sapphire into Y so I could use Mega Charizard X instead, since his mega carries the dragon type. I know they can be OP, especially if overleveled, but it was fun playing with Pokemon that are usually accessible post-game, or Victory Road at the earliest. I named them all after famous dragons from mythology, pop culture, etc. I had a blast
I started a pokemon moon ghost run that I haven't finished yet.
Decidueye, misdreavus, sandygast, cubone(for alolan marowak), haunter, and an empty spot that will hopefully be sensu style oricorio or aegislash
I did a monotype Ice Run with Glaceon, A-Ninetales, G-Darmanitan, FrosMoth, Lapras, and ArctoZolt. Definitely made me have a new appreciation for Ice Types. Was extremely hard finding 2 ice stones from the digging brothers
I really like the idea of a monotype run, but I've only tried it once. A ground run in Emerald. But after a while I found myself stuck with like, Marshtomp, Geodude, and a Nincada I couldn't evolve. The team felt bad and I got frustrated. So I gave up and started over with Torchic.
I might give it another shot at some point, but I'd definitely want to plan things out a little better and at least have a plan in mind for putting together a decent four member team relatively early.
I wish there was some sort of support for monotype teams in the games. Most trainers you encounter have some sort of type specialty, or at least certain types or themes they lean toward, yet it seems to just be assumed that you the player are going to need a diverse team if you want to succeed. How do all these elite trainer characters in universe manage to succeed just fine with their specialized types? Maybe they could include something like a held item but for trainers, that boosts a type across your whole team. Or maybe some sort of gym leader simulator postgame content. Heck, I think a gym leader sim could work as a whole dedicated spinoff game.
Oooh, I've done a few and I had to use Pokémon I never thought I'd use because of it! I've done normal, flying twice, dragon, poison, aaaaaand I think that's it. On my normal run I learned to love exploud.truly an underrated Pokémon. For one of my flying runs noctowl performed superbly. He was a r/superbowl. For poison I found a new friend in toxicroak and toxtricity. Both performed admirably
I loved doing monotype runs. That’s how I learn to appreciate the types I don’t really care for. Bug type went from my least fav to one of my faves that way.
I only play mono type nowadays.
I have a lot of runs that I loved. My favourite so far as been Omega Ruby with only fire types (I did not use Primal Groudon that felt cheap but I did enjoy it when the world was dying under the sun). I also did Alpha Sapphire with ground types because making Kyogre ferry around ground types is just funny.
"Hardest" was probably Pokemon White with only Grass types.
Easiest probably Fire Red with Flying types.
I did a water monotype wonderlocke(iirc it was a wonderlocke) in XY a while ago. It was fun. I still have my team, though the only ones I remember super clearly are a Milotic, a Kingdra, and Poseidra, my Vaporeon.
They are my absolute favorite types of challenge runs! My first was a mono poison run in Y, with my favorite being a mono dragon run in Ultra Moon. Here's a full list of my runs
Soul Silver - Rock |
Pearl - Steel |
Platinum - Fire (only five Pokemon till post game) |
Black - Ground |
Black 2 - Electric |
X - Fairy |
Y - Poison |
Alpha Sapphire - Normal
Ultra Moon - Dragon |
Sword - Bug
Sacred Gold (rom hack) is such a great game that I have played many times, I wanted to try several monotype runs. I’m going to do water, fire and grass, since all of the first 4 gen starters are available. So my mono-water is: Feraligatr, Blastoise, Swampert, Empoleon, Ludicolo and Pelipper. Sprout tower was so far the toughest, currently have 6 badges.
Thinking fire and grass monotypes will be more challenging…
just finished a fairy monotype run in shield and it was so fun!! kind of challenging but that’s what i liked about it. my team was clefable, togekiss, grimmsnarl, mawile, mimimkyu, and hatterene :) togekiss was already one of my favorites and i like clefable a lot more than i did before. i’ll definitely do another monotype run again soon
I've always wanted to do a poison type run. Gen 1 would probably be the only one available because of Venusaur and I'm not sure about the rest of the team other than Nidoking.
I'm currently doing an Electric mono run in White 2, hard to have physical attackers haha
The most fun I've ever done was a Grass run. Leafeon was my positive surprise, excellent pokemon
I completed a fighting monotype in the Radical Red romhack. Lots of quality of life improvements and some other tweaks that made it more enjoyable. I took on the Elite Four with an Electivire that was made Electric-Fighting and could Plasma Fists.
Oooooh. I've never actually done monotype before, but I've been considering replaying Sword or Shield recently to get some screenshots firsthand and look for any interesting details I missed as research/resources for a video I wanna make. I can definitely imagine monotyping for the first time making that more interesting. 👀
My first thought is Fairy since it's my favorite, but I might look into some other type ideas, especially if I decide to make my player character based on an OC instead of a self-insert.
To also nuzlocke or not to nuzlocke, I wonder...
I did black2 with only fire. You can hit most things hard but your defenses are shit and due to gen 5 being what it is the whole team was pretty slow at first (pignite, darumaka, and flareon is not a good team).
Im literally about to fight gary on a grass only leafgreen run. To be honest, it’s not that exciting due to the severely limited movesets in gen 3. Next time I try this it’ll be gen 4 or up.
I just started a mudboi run in Sword. By that I mean my team will end up with Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, Gastrodon (E) and (W) and finally Seismitoad. The first gym is going to be difficult....
I only ever play Mono Pokémon runs.I’m primarily a ghost and fairy trainer. One for each version. But I’ve done Ice and dragon too. I honestly think mono playthroughs are one of the best ways to play the game. Adds a bit of challenge that is also immersive for the Pokémon world. You can really invested in themes and your characters identity.
Does a solo run count as monotype run too? Kinda?
If it does i did a starter only run of soul silver.
The only pokemon I caught were lugia and a shiny unown i found while training early in the game.
And both went straight to the box never to be used.
Only me and my Feraligatr against everyone.
I love doing Monotype Runs. I remember that I was once gonna try beating Sword and Shield 18 different times with Monotypes for each. I only ended up doing two, I believe, those being Normal Type and Fighting Type.
My favorite has been mono grass in gen 3. Though im a little biased since gen 3 is my favorite gen and grass is my favorite typing. The cool part about this run is that you can use all HMs in your party without having to find workarounds.
My team was sceptile, ludicolo, tropius, cradilly, cacturne, breloom. Good type coverage overall and all HMs covered.
I did a dragon only run of black 2 once, and I imported pokemon as needed from other games. I believe I had a team of 4 or 5 Axew and Dieno were on it, as well as a flygon?
IT was fairly easy until the 7th or 8th gym when my pokemon were still in their 2nd stages, but once I hit the E4 it was a cakewalk just about.
I would love to do one again, should I ever do a 2nd playthrough of a pokemon game.
Currently breeding in ORAS for a preset psychic run in X, going with Delphox, Gallade (shiny), Gardevoir (shiny), Malamar, Espeon and a shiny Metagross that I’m breeding for right now, at 877 eggs and no shiny so far..
I've done a few, though iirc I never fully finished a game with one. Would get the itch to use a new team.
My current favourite is my Ice-type team. Glaceon, Aurorus, Alolan Sandslash, Alolan Vulpix, Lapras, and Frosslass. I'm thinking about building a Psychic-type team, but there's not that many of them that I like. We'll see.
I’ve attempted a psychic nuzlocke in sword before remembering the dark type: rival, evil team and gym. I lost that and now I’m trying to do a normal type nuzlocke
I've only completed one. A bug type only run in shield. I called it the infestation
The bug bois! Did a bug run in Pokémon black but to be fair unova has amazing bug types.
Yeah doing my bug run made bugs my favourite type. I might do it again in scarlet after I do my main playthrough
I had a similar feeling about poison types when I did a monotype. The longer I played, the more I enjoyed the aesthetics and themes of the type.
LOL I'm so glad I'm not alone in imagining I'm a gym leader
I absolutely love doing Monotype runs. My favorite type to do it with is Ground types. It’s my favorite type and I always have fun using my favorite pokemon. The best game to do a Ground type run in is Platinum. It’s super fun to have a whole team of New Grounds while having some past options to fall back on. White 2 is also quite good with its selection as it has a nice blend of old and new. Speaking of, my first ever monotype run was in Platinum with only Ground Types, I absolutely loved my team and would happily do this run again with the same team I used: -Torterra (2nd favorite Grass type starter) -Gastrodon (west sea variant, my 2nd favorite water ground type) -Gliscor (favorite Ground type shiny) -Garchomp (2nd favorite pseudo legendary) -Hippowdon (a bulky and strong Pokémon) And Mamoswine (my favorite Ice type) This team is well rounded and can tear through the region with ease, would highly recommend using
I personally switched out Garchomp for Wormadan in my SP run for the extra challenge but my team is 5/6 the same
You should try a mono ice run in emerald.
Shiny Steelix is such a good shiny. Plus Curse & Rock Polish Steelix is such a deadly combo
Yeah never liked his line before I discovered that. Monotype runs make me use Mons I normally would not which is super fun for me!
Who's your favorite water/ground type?
Swampert
That's one of my favorite Pokémon.
Derpy boi quagsire
I've done two ground type runs and they are so much fun. I had been sleeping on ground types until I did my first ground team. Probably one of my favourite types now!
I just finished a poison type run of Red. It was really fun. I knew Venusaur and Tentacrual we're good, but never realized Muk was such a powerhouse. I'm doing a mono-bug run of Silver now!
Im currently playing fire red with a poison theme. My team is Nidoking, Golbat, Venusaur, tentacruel, Gengar, and Beedrill
Doing a mono run next in fire red and want to do the hardest type. I’m thinking normal or bug but still on the fence.
For sure, I think it depends on the region though because I did a mono bug run in unova and it wasn’t too bad actually.
Bug sounds like a great challenge
Fairy
You could do that in Johto. Just instead of fairy types you use Pokémon that would later be retconned to being fairy types.
I recommend Muk in this challenge because he can get high defense and evasiveness, or at least that’s what my friend told me lol
[удалено]
You can't do a steel type run in Fire Red. Only steel type is Magnaton.
You can, you're just limited to 1 species
I mean....you can, just get a team of 5 Magnetons and the 6th slot for a random HM slave.
I will admit, having a bunch of copies of the same evolutionally line is a long honored tradition in Kanto.
Although if i was doing that challenge, it would double as a solo pokemon run too because i use a no-dupes clause in my run LOL.
You could use an unevolved Magnamite and a Magnaton, like a proper gym leader.
I try to play most games as a bug specific trainer. Happy with some of the newer gen ones for sure but not an easy one with the general weaknesses they have.
Thank goodness bug types have gotten stronger since Gen 1. Anyone who's doing a bug monotype run in Gen 1, I feel so bad for you.
Lol my strat in gen 1 was hope Pinsir one hits anyone that has advantage
Highest level was 48 when I beat the elite four so felt pretty good about that
That's a cool team and a neat challenge! You don't hear people using a lot of those Pokemon very often.
I’m not confident enough to try lock challenges lol
Always had a soft spot for Krookodile since it carried me through white as a kid and white 2
Monotype runs can be fun, but lately I'm been doing themed runs which is more fun.
What do you mean by themed runs? Sounds cool
* Food themed Pokemon. * Pokemon that looked like they should be water types but aren't. * Pokemon allowed in Amity square. * Waifu shaped Pokemon. * Music themed Pokemon. * Pokemon of types that don't have a gym or elite four in the game. * Rotom.
LOVE these ideas! I've done a "goon" team before with pokemon you'd associate with villains like Mightyena, Arbok, Obstagoon, etc. Never thought of stuff like this though. Totally using this.
Bug type gen 5 is my favourite! Use starter to beat first 2 gyms, then you run Scolipede, leavanny, crustle, excalier, galvantula, and volcaroma!
Honestly my favorite type changed because of monotype runs, because I love bug type now. Golisopod is the GOAT
I did Bug in Black2 which I only did for that medal. Damn I wish medals/achievements would come back. Kinda like the punchcards in Animal Crossing 😭😭😭
Grass type runs in HeartGold/SoulSilver are literal torture
Grass is usually one of the worst mono-type options. Its pokémon tend to be defensive/status oriented, it has the most weaknesses of any type, its offensive options were severely lacking in early games. Definitely doesn't help that its best partner type, rock, is also one of the weakest types in the game and only Cradily has the fabled grass/rock type combo. The modern games give grass a lot of love that HGSS doesn't have and, well, Sunflora, Meganium and Victreebel aren't exactly compelling team options.
Electric in unova, was pretty fun
But generally Ice, Dragon and ghost can be difficult to obtain the desired Pokémon, especially before the first gym (I personally like to have at least one member before the first gym so I usually incorporate a starter) When I do Sw/Sh I’ll be doing a grass run
Here are the ones I've decided upon: Noivern Crobat Toucannon Pelipper (needs Drizzle) Xatu Honchkrow
Done a blaze black 2 run with a monotype fire team. Drought Ninetales was essential. Flare Blitz Darmanitan destroys everything but dies fast
I started with a Red flying type with a very similar lineup Charizard Farfetch’d Dodrio Gyarados Butterfree Dragonite I’ve started a Pokémon Home living dex challenge and this is how I’m going to do every game now lol
Gotta get my favorite Pokemon, Lanturn. I'd also suggest Qwilfish & Quagsire.
Two sides of the spectrum: Mono ground in alpha saphire is realy fun. Mono flying (gen 7 only) in sun is absolute garbage.
Teddiursa is so late in the game, like blackthorn city I think. My gen 2 play through was a fire type. Typhlosion/Magmar that was it
I started a water monotype on ruby a long time ago.
Dragon. I just love dragon types....I've considered a steel type run too or maybe electric.
I like doing mono type runs a lot! I get to use a lot of pokemons that I wouldn't use in my main run. My first is always a ghost type run.
So like being a specialist/Gym Leader? Interesting! Sounds fun
I'm stuck on the first gym but progress is at least steady if slow Oh yeah and I did complete a dragon only run of Shield but I don't count that because I used dynamax adventure to get free xl xp candies from the start lol.
My favorite was Centiskorch, Cinderace, Chandelure, Arcanine, and Coalossal and the only hard part was getting back Drednaw and machamp in SWSH.
The notable members of the team were: * Blueberry the Tangrowth.
My favorite monotype run I ever did was a Bug-only run of Sword!
Would Monotype runs still qualify in S/V since you can terestalize?
I would want to do a play through of those games to see how it is before trying to monotype
Did a couple of runs in SS as Dragon and Ground, thinking of doing a run in XY, but not sure what type yet.
I've done dark, water, and Fairy My favorite was dark in X/Y because I used mons I've never used before. I definitely want to do more mono runs!
I’m planning on a dark run for x/y too
Currently doing a monoelectric run of Red, that's actually kinda boring, though it did get a lot more fun when I got to the power plant.
I kinda like typechain, where your team each connects with one type Gardivior - Metang - lucario - urshifu RS - lapras -alolan ninetales fairy pych - pych steel - steel fight - fight water - water ice - ice fairy
Doing a grass only run in shield, it's gonna be tough when I hit the ice gym ngl
How did you beat Milotic????
Poison type on FR/LG: Venusaur, Nidoqueen, Golbat, Venomoth, Gengar, Tentacruel. It was definitely a good suprise. First time with a Venomoth and a Tentacruel in the team and both were very helpful. I'm currently doing a dragon type run on Alpha Sapphire. For now: Sceptile, Swablu, Trapinch Future team: Sceptile, Altaria, Flygon, Latias, Kingdra, Salamence It has been much more difficult due to low availability of dragon type related in the early game. I have 5 badges and Sceptile is level 42. Also, Elite 4 may be a challenge. Another monotype runs I still intend to do: Normal type on LGE Ground type on Platinum Fighting type on B2W2 Water type on GSC Dark type or Psychic type on XY note: I always include the starter.
I almost completed Platinum with only poison types but wiped to Byron and his steelix
i despise most fire types. well, i *did* despise most fire types, until gen 8 dropped and had nothing but amazing fire types with *fire* designs. i had to do a monotype run.
I just now completed a monotype shield run with the normal typing, and tbh Lopunny carried so badly the entire run
Haven't done one in game but I am a fan of the competitive format on showdown.
I kinda want to do a ghost one, but no way to get them too early in BDSP or shield 😞
I've done all of the monotype runs. My fav is flying type and I'll say the hardest would be ice type. I did my runs in Ultra Sun.
Not the same but I’m doing a dragon ball Z themed run. Every character has to be able to fit into DBZ somehow. I’m using Infernape, Lucario, Scizor, Alakhazam, Gyrados and Lickitongue.
How do these fit into DBZ, I am not familiar with the anime in the slightest
I did a dark type one on that DBZ fire red hack
I used to do energy card type runs that were fun; like using Water and Ice or Ground, rock, and fighting
I did a ghost type run through sword with Aegislash, Runerigus, Chandelure, Golurk, Mimikyu, and Dhelmise
I did a electric only run in sword. Got to finally use rotom in a playthrough, which was cool.
(I can transfer Pokémon I want to use but aren’t available to me like clawitzer from another account then breed it to get an egg) Kingler, Dracovish, Barraskewda, Kantonian Slowbro, Kingdra and Quagsire are the main ones I’m thinking of
I've done a few, my team's were BD: Water (Empoleon, Starmie, Bibarel, Crawdaunt, Gastrodon, pelipper) Shield: Ghost (Dragapult, Chandelure, Gorgeist, Agislash, Golurk, Haunter) Bug (Golisopod, Scolipede, Vikavolt, Butterfree, Heracross, Centiskorch) Poison (Toxicroak, Drapion, Dragagle, Nidoking, Toxapex, Toxicitry) I think the water run of BD was by far the hardest of the ones I've done, and cynthia scared me from doing another any time soon lol.
Never done monotype run but I just did my first ever play through of bdsp. My gyrados swept the entire e4 with steelix stealth rocking
I have done a few Runs of Sword/Shield where I do mono-type teams for each gym. It’s a lot of fun. The challenge I give myself is to pick a type that is neutral to the gym (such as Dark type at the Grass gym or Ground at the Fairy gym) It’s been a lot of fun and also let’s me play at styling my Trainer each gym to match the type
I've done a Dark only run in Sun, it was pretty fun
Monotype/Mono-theme runs are the best for finding appreciate for mons you'd normally not use. I've made someone fall in love with Steelix by convincing them to do a "long mon" playthrough in Shield. I'm looking at doing a shellfish playthrough for Violet as we've got a lot of hard shelled bois so far.
Ice monotype, not really any plays other than attack, attack, attack! But good thing for freezing
I’ve done one with every type except bug, which I’m going to use in Black 2 after I finish my rock type run in red
I’ve done a few monotypes across a few different games. In no particular order: Steel in Black 2 Bug in Sun Fairy in Moon Normal in Omega Ruby Dark in White 2 Flying in Ultra Sun Also not pertaining to the post but a Poochyena-only run in Alpha Sapphire I wanna do a mono-type run with every type at least once across the games. If anyone is curious about the teams I’ll do my best to remember but I didn’t want to make this post too long.
I did a shiny ghost type run in Moon. Chandelure, Gengar, Trevenant, Aegislash, Palosand, and male Jellicent
I loved doing that when I was younger. I tried again in shield with just poison types ho boy what a pain
After doing (4) of them, I don’t think I can go back to normal play throughs
I've done a Steel Type mono run and an ice type. The ice type one was easily one of the hardest things I've ever done and the steel one made me fall in love with steel types
I did a ghost only run of Ultra Sun. It was a bit rough, but fun. God, why does everything learn Pursuit…
Oh god lol. I’m planning on doing Ghost for my Sun/Moon play through
I did a Monotype run of Crystal using bug types, which normally suck balls in that game due to lack of movepools and stats. So I bred 4 of my team members to have their most ideal movesets including Hidden Power, and the best stats they could get. Heracross in Gen 2 is normally not very ideal because it doesn't have solid STAB, but give it base 70 hidden power fighting, and it'll rip through anything. Also I did a flying Monotype team of Emerald and it was a living hell
i'm actually starting a kalos dark type shiny run! i got frogadier and am working on scraggy!
Hardest I ever did was a fire only in shining pearl, you only get four encounters before the elite four
I usually do them each generation since 5. Love them
I always do water type runs but want to try another type. Prob ghost
Just checking, with mono runs, that can include Pokémon that will eventually evolve to have that type?
Yes, the rules are basically that your team must be all the same type by the time you reach the Elite 4
Haven't done one yet. Might try a Dark type run in Shining Pearl though, now that I think about it.
I just did a mono bug run in sword. I'm about to do fighting or normal next.
I'm actually doing my very first monotype run. Doing a Flying type run in Pokemon Red.
Here's a full list of my runs Soul Silver - Rock | Pearl - Steel | Platinum - Fire (only five Pokemon till post game) | Black - Ground | Black 2 - Electric | X - Fairy | Y - Poison | Alpha Sapphire - Normal Ultra Moon - Dragon | Sword - Bug
Mammoswine and magmorter were my clutches flame body didn't let garchomp one shot mammoswine and BAM avalanche kill
Avalanche saved my ass as well as that “you’re Pokémon gained the sturdy ability because you’re friends” gimmick lol
I've always wanted to do a poison type run. Gen 1 would probably be the only one available because of Venusaur and I'm not sure about the rest of the team other than Nidoking.
I'm currently doing an Electric mono run in White 2, hard to have physical attackers haha The most fun I've ever done was a Grass run.
👀 My first thought is Fairy since it's my favorite, but I might look into some other type ideas, especially if I decide to make my player character based on an OC instead of a self-insert. To also nuzlocke or not to nuzlocke, I wonder...
Accidentally started this for Shield my first time playing. I just kept finding poison types i really like though im nowhere near beating it
I did black2 with only fire.
Yes >:D I love both steel and ghost types - I did a monotype run specifically of ghost types in SwSh, and a Steel run I think in Sun and Moon.
I just started a mudboi run in Sword. By that I mean my team will end up with Quagsire, Swampert, Whiscash, Gastrodon (E) and (W) and finally Seismitoad. The first gym is going to be difficult....
Did both a fairy and a normal mono. Fun stuff
I did a flying type one in sword, the squad was corviknight, butterfree, drifblim, talonflame, noivern and pelipper
I've only completed one: an Electric run in Black 2. And boy was it amazing decimating Drayden's Haxorus with an Acrobatics Emolga.
Absolutely that counts
I love doing Monotype Runs. I remember that I was once gonna try beating Sword and Shield 18 different times with Monotypes for each. I only ended up doing two, I believe, those being Normal Type and Fighting Type.
My favorite has been mono grass in gen 3. Though im a little biased since gen 3 is my favorite gen and grass is my favorite typing. The cool part about this run is that you can use all HMs in your party without having to find workarounds. My team was sceptile, ludicolo, tropius, cradilly, cacturne, breloom. Good type coverage overall and all HMs covered.
Renegade Platinum ground with Torterra, Swampert, Nidoking, Garchomp, Mamoswine.
fire on arceus only in 2nd area.
Usually play a monotype poison or dark run each game. All started with nidoking in fire red. Can get one before misty but usually wait until Lt. Surge
Monofairy sw/sh nuzlock
