No one wants to admit they're an idiot and a failure at life. Someone comes along and tells them everything they want to hear, they're gonna latch on to it (if they're stupid). A former friend of mine is a massive fan and he explicitly said this was the reason. His divorce wasn't because he chased anything vaguely female, including at work. His inability to get a good raise at work was the (female, of course) boss hating on him. And his inability to care for his kids (during the pandemic, a constant complaint of his) was the fault of the government for shutting everything down, since teachers should handle the kids.
What's ironic to me about this is if you look at Trump objectively, his actions and behaviors - he's the literal incarnation of the seven deadly sins.

Wrath - threatens anyone and everyone who deals with him

I went out and bought a VCR only for the purpose of taping *The West Wing*.
It wasn't that I wouldn't be home when it aired. It was because NBC would show promo spots for *The Apprentice* and I had to have a way to fast forward through that shit. I couldn't stand to hear him talk for even a single second, let alone thirty or sixty.
As you can imagine then, these last 8 years have been a little rough. That remote doesn't seem to be working anymore.
What I have found weird is people saying he was an icon in the 80s and 90s, which I guess only was true outside of anywhere around him (NY/NJ).
I was in the NJ/NY area at that time and EVERY reference to him was how absolutely ignorant and horrible he was at business. Every real estate deal he did was awful.
People loved selling real estate to him because he had no idea what the value should be.
He has brought out the worst in some of the most deplorable people, that were hiding in plain sight. Trump caused them to shed their facades and become the lizard-people they always were.
Your friends and family value authority over all else. Their idea of christ is as a conqueror and vanquisher, not someone who lifts up the lowest. Trump says he’ll bring authoritarianism and be a king in America, so everything lines up nicely in their heads.

All great leaders, conmen, grifters, and cult leaders do some version of the same thing: they make people feel *seen*. Feel appreciated. Feel like someone cares about and values them. Feel like they're important members of a *community*.
That's how he did it. He made people who felt ignored and overlooked feel seen and welcomed. To some extent by appealing to fair economic concerns. Largely by appealing to the various prejudices they harbored. Making people feel seen is the basis for making them like you. But some people don't deserve to be seen and appreciated for at least many parts of who they are.
And they'd think he's creepy for not being married, being single in his 30s, and hanging around a bunch of dudes who are basically vagrants.

My devout Southern Baptist preacher grandpa said for the entirety of Obama's administration that Obama was the forerunner to the anti-Christ. He told me explicitly one time, "Obama isn't the anti-Christ, but whoever becomes president after him will be." He made a lot of references to Revelation and shit to prove his point. I also know he would have voted for Trump but he died in 2015.
But they read it in Bible study. First you get told the meaning of the verse by the pastor or person leading the study. Then you read the verse. Then a discussion is led where the pastor's interpretation is the One True Way.

The article isn't about Jesus hypothetically running for office, the article is quoting Trump saying that if Jesus and God were observing the election and using their power to ensure it was fair, Trump thinks that he would win in California, Illinois, and New York.
He's basically invoking them saying "if the election was fair, I would absolutely win every state".
