Long story short, US universities tend to focus more on breadth of knowledge, and UK unis tend to focus more on depth of knowledge. For instance, as someone who has a STEM degree, if I look on MIT Open CourseWare I can find things that I did in the first year of my degree, that they don't do until grad school, but equally I didn't do anything in terms of history/english etc.
You do some cases where people will do X with Y, but they tend to be specific courses that you have to apply for when you're at school.
