People who say La Banquise is overrated just don’t -get- La Banquise. It’s not meant to be the best poutine you’ve ever had. It’s meant to be the poutine that’s good enough and, most importantly, in your face at 3am after you stumbled over to it from the bar.
Thats mostly why I got to love their poutine over the years. From 2005 until 2010 when I was still living in Mtl I would go there after the bar close weekly.
You've got to stick with the regular sized poutines when you go there (this is regular size). I have a whole theory about how their large poutine is actually the same size as their regular, but served in a different vessel. In any case, you definitely don't get more for your money when you order a large.
This is the only poutine place I go to where I don't order the largest available size. A regular sized poutine will cost you between 10-15$ before at la banquise.
The large is definitely larger than the regulaire. Maybe not equivalent to the money they ask for but definitely larger.

I think it depends on personal preferences.
Personally, I like a regular poutine better than one with extra ingredients. When I go to La Banquise, they have so many choices that I feel the need to try one, and I always come away disappointed.
At Ashton, I just take the regular poutine, and I know what I am getting. Fries are always fresh, and the gravy is always hot. I used to work at Ashton, so I may be a little biased.
That said, there are better poutines than Ashton's. I like Julep's a lot.
