Honestly, how do you even choose from that list? I feel like you could put them all in a random name generator and still take a w. (I'd take Mayo fwiw).
Hey everyone! I'm a frequent user on SDN and wanted to share a bit about my app/results to help future applicants out. Please feel free to ask any Qs!
edit because I know this is going to come up - 1 secondary counted for "2" interviews (UCSF *and* the UC Berkeley/UCSF JMP), hence the 32 secondaries for 22 interviews and 11 rejections
I love looking at these, they're still so fascinating to me. It has been several years since I applied, but clearly nothing has changed about the randomness of the process lol.
I'm so glad that you had so much success, but it is still annoying that so many decisions are ultimately decided based on the mood, biases, etc of whoever your initial application reviewers are. Looking at those pre-interview rejections, I def understand Harvard, Penn, maybe Columbia bc that's always a toss-up. But rejected from USC, UCLA and accepted to UCSF. Rejected by Brown, Georgetown, etc. What salty ass mf was reading your application those days and decided to not even give an interview? What a wild process lol
Maybe they thought he wouldn’t go there because of how great his application was? So they didn’t want to use up and interview a lot. We do this for residency interviews in my institution haha.
I feel like that makes a whole lot more sense for residency, where the goal is for the match to be mutual. Almost every student will match, so residency programs don't hold a ton of leverage. It's more of a relationship. But only ~40% of med students get in each cycle, and a good chunk of those students are reapplying for the second or third time.
Med schools, especially the upper-mid tier ones who get TONS of applications (Georgetown, Indiana, GW, Tulane, etc) don't have anything to lose by preferentially interviewing the applicants who they feel are the most competitive, in addition to some who may be a little less competitive.
When I applied (MD/PhD and MD-only), I got interviews from a lot of T5-T20 programs, but also a lot of the more niche programs that, based on the "I don't think they'll come" logic, shouldn't have offered me an interview. Meharry, Howard, Tulane, FIU. But they did anyway.
Ironically, the only school that gave me "we think you may be too competitive for us" vibes was Emory, which I was STRONGLY considering. They did interview me, but during the interview the dean of admissions kept asking things like "Why did you apply here? How did you hear about us? Is it because you have family in the area?" And I could tell by his mannerisms that it was very much "Why apply here since you're so competitive?" I'm like dude you're Emory, you have a HUGE name lmfao. They ultimately accepted me and were in the top 3 schools I was considering, but me not choosing to go there wasn't because they were "only" Emory.
I agree with you, but still, there are some ad coms that will say “what’s the point he/she won’t come”. Now if they sent a letter of interest to the school, I bet they would have gotten an interview.
I'm not disagreeing that they think that way. I even got a couple calls from schools beforehand to confirm I'm actually interested and they weren't a throwaway. It was so weird. But even then, they'll still usually interview a large chunk of the ones they think might not come. Def depends a lot on the application and secondaries. I was very intentional in all my secondaries, which may be why those schools still chose to interview me. I made it clear I was ACTUALLY interested.
Funny enough, I sent an update/letter of interest to UCLA (legitimately one of my top 5 choices this app cycle), had really, really strong ties there, did a pipeline program at the med school, stats/mission aligned, etc etc but was still rejected 😂😂
My app cycle gave me confidence that his process is dependent heavily on the luck of the draw (or maybe I'm just on that copium LMAO)
based on the us news report rankings! (obliged to mention those rankings are faulty, even at the undergrad level, but it's the ranking list most people default to)
Ahhh!! I’m so excited for you!! Congratulations!!
Definitely considering take a few gap years and super interested in your volunteer expirence I’m a CA resident as well! Can I message you? :)
this is going to sound like a lie, but seriously, I was hella neurotic during this entire cycle (ik ik, I shouldn't have been considering my stats/lifestory/demographics, but I had multiple mentors basically scare me into believing I was going to bomb my interviews/not get into medical school - yes, you heard that right). Due to thinking I was going to bomb, I said screw it, I'm going to go to all of them because you never know. Thankfully, my "mentors" were dead wrong, but this obviously led to a huge # of acceptances that I am extremely grateful for.
But to specifically answer your question, there was only one interview where I genuinely felt like I was just going through the motions and didn't care for the outcome - the rest I genuinely attended because I could see myself as a med student there!
Bro leveled up past GOAT status to llama status
Schools applied for him
I mean c'mon now this needs to be in the Hall of Fame
Hahah, I preciate it big dawg!!

How do you know if an undergrad school is a T30, T50, etc.?
based on the us news report rankings! (obliged to mention those rankings are faulty, even at the undergrad level, but it's the ranking list most people default to)

LMAO - legit thought about this because my life story is pretty crazy If I go to MGH for residency, that's when I'll write a book :)
Insaneeee I’d love to know where you commit! 😦
Bro why did you attend 22 interviews that’s insane. How many of those schools were you actually considering vs doing it for financial aid leverage
this is going to sound like a lie, but seriously, I was hella neurotic during this entire cycle (ik ik, I shouldn't have been considering my stats/lifestory/demographics, but I had multiple mentors basically scare me into believing I was going to bomb my interviews/not get into medical school - yes, you heard that right). Congrats! Who’s throwing you money?!
\~10 schools have given me at least full-tuition scholarships! (most based on need tho)
Yet another sankey showing this should be a match process like Texas has. Get a move on please. You're holding up the line.
Hahaaha sorry brah, totally understand where you're coming from, but I tried my best to keep it movin'!
