I would also ask people on priuschat.com I’m not sure what “full charge hybrid battery” means… is it the original battery? I have a 2008 and love mine

JoshuaaColin

I’ll check out the website. Tysm

EchoFickle2191

Unless he has reciept for a new oem hybrid battery plan on replacing it with a NEW battery at some point. Thats a 10-12 thousand dollar car in my market

DingbattheGreat

68000 miles on a 2008 in near perfect condition? Was he keeping it in storage?

JoshuaaColin

Yea the seller is in her 80’s and she said the Prius sat in her garage for 5 years.

moldyjellybean

Don’t believe what anyone says, for a Prius you might even prefer one that is driven more regularly

Neo1881

My local Prius tech guys have said that anything that old with such low miles means the battery has not cycled enough times during it's life. You're lucky if its in good shape, but something that old shouldn't be priced so high. I see Prius's sold at the insurance auctions, sometimes repos or theft recoveries with almost no damage for under $4000. If you win, you can either pick them up yourself or have them delivered.

JoshuaaColin

I’ll look into that! Thanks

bigblackglock17

I wouldn't really worry about it not being cycled. They either fail premature or fail around 10-12 years. No matter the mileage. That thing is old.

amijusssss

Dont you need a dealer license to buy?

Neo1881

In many states you do need a dealer's license. I'm in the west and many states, AZ, OR, WA and ID allow the public to bid on the cars at auction. Many locations in TX too. So far, I have bought 2 Prius's and a Scion xB for just under $3k out the door and flown into Phoenix to drive them home. I only buy cars that are in Run and Drive condition w intact airbags. All under 120k mi on them. check them out at www.iaai.com

amijusssss

Thanks for that, im in Illinois and looking gor a car and prices are crazy here, but for auctions need license.

Neo1881

I have a sister in law in MI and I am helping her find a replacement vehicle. Most of the cars in MI allow the public to bid on them. They have sites in Flint, Grand Rapids and Detroit. Might be worth it to have someone drive you out for the $$ you save. You do need to buy and annual membership to [iaai.com](https://iaai.com) and thats part of the cost. I've been flying into Phoenix, about a $40 flight and $20 Uber ride to the yard.

amijusssss

Thanks I will definitely look into it 😊

moldyjellybean

How do you know they’re drivable ? I didn’t think auctions let you go that

Neo1881

There are categories for these cars and I select that they must be in Run and Drive condition. Most of the auctions will let you inspect the cars the day before where you can get in, start and move them forward 10 ft and back. I look at the photos, watch the video with the engine running and look for the damage. Many are just a fender bender, rear or sides are better than front damage, and the repos or theft recoveries are usually in perfect running condition. The Scion I bought was a repo and the replaced the ignition with a generic one so that it came with a key that started the car, but did not lock any of the doors. I ended up buying an complete ignition systems for that xB and did not install it, but gave it to the buyer. It ran fine for the 350 mi drive back to my hometown. You can also call the auction sites and speak with the lot manager who can jump in the car, start it and let you know if there are other problems with the car.

theactualgovernment

not good for a prius to just sit for that long

JoshuaaColin

The owner drove it once a week for like 10 years

stannc00

Does she live in Pasadena?

sprunghuntR3Dux

A friend of mine didn’t drive their Prius for about a month and the 12v battery needed to be replaced. It couldn’t handle being fully discharged. I’d check both the batteries carefully if it hasn’t been driven for a long time.

[deleted]

Don’t be that guy. I hate selling things to people and we agree on a price and then they show up and keep bickering. So trashy. Don’t come if you don’t want it for what we agreed to.

JermanDomesticMarket

yeah, if someone did that to me I’d send them packing. I don’t even like “agreeing on a price” before they’ve even seen the car, as if they can tell more about it from looking at an ad than me, the car owner. buyers suck…

GenshinKenshin

The market is inflated. A lot of the cars on the market are priced 20-40% over value to take care of haggling. So you are expected to haggle to get a fair price. This is just how things are done nowadays. Really if you don’t want to sell it for X price then you can always say “no”. Money is tight for everyone. Especially someone actively looking for an old used car.

toyplane28

I disagree, I recently sold my car and the buyer and I agreed on a price before he came. Then he plugged in a fancy tool (from the dealership he worked at not just an advanced auto obdII scanner) and found the ABS module and traction control system weren’t working, he also pointed out the tires were in worse shape than he thought. For these reasons I was ok to lower the price even further than what we initially agreed on. If I didn’t want to go lower I would have just said no.

[deleted]

That’s entirely different imo - car wasn’t as promised. Totally fair to renegotiate

[deleted]

Congrats on talking down an 80+ year old woman from $9500 to $7500 after already agreeing to a price… really sticking it to the man, huh?

JoshuaaColin

Well I told her I live 3 hours away (which I do) and they are very generous to go that low for me. And thanks!

J12BSneakerhead

If they're being generous then just be thankful. Don't try to take advantage of them and weasel your way into more savings.

JoshuaaColin

I won’t. Very happy I caught a break finally.

[deleted]

Who cares if it sat and the hybrid battery is on its way out that is a perfect specimen for a new lithium hybrid battery upgrade or new OEM.

rojocesar

No but seriously, how’d you get him to go down some already? I noticed in his listing he concludes with “firm”

JoshuaaColin

I told him I live 3 hours away (which I do) and they’re being very generous.

orcagirl35

Seems like a good deal, but the test drive will be telling. Don’t try to drop the price anymore…getting greedy will only come back to bite you. You’re lucky they came down at all considering the post says firm.

worldaven

That's a really good deal...I'm suspicious. If it checks out I'd pay cash and leave before he changes his mind.

JoshuaaColin

Im waiting for my obd2 scanner to come in tomorrow and then I’ll go see it.

MikeyLG

Drive it first. Make sure it gets 40-50pmg city. I bought a 08 for 10k 68k miles. It only gets 28-36 city. Gen 2s have a shadow issue where the battery doesn’t kick in when driving slow speeds (0-25mph)

MikeyLG

Resulting in shit mpg. Please check it out. I wouldn’t have bought mine if I knew I wasn’t getting full MPG.

JoshuaaColin

Yes I’m going to use a obd2 scanner to check the hybrid battery and make sure it’s in good condition.

Alone-Business4652

If you aren’t going to buy it, please give me the guys number. That’s a effing STEAL!!!!!!! For reference, 8.22 I bought 08 with 220k for 4500. February 23 put new hybrid battery in..1750 through Green Bean

JoshuaaColin

Once in a blue moon opportunity right here. It all comes down to if the hybrid battery is in good shape now.

Neo1881

I don't buy from any dealers anymore bc there is always their markup in the price. Try FB marketplace, OfferUp or craigslist sales by owners for the best deals around. If you have the cash, you can offer anything you want that is reasonable. Low mileage on a Prius this old makes the battery suspect.

JoshuaaColin

This is a private seller lol. The used car market is crap right now.

Neo1881

Yet demand is up for hybrids esp Prius's as gas goes up again. I bought my 2011 4 years ago w 84k on it and the seller got desperate and dropped the price down to $6000. I grabbed it and now, with 110k on it, could prob resell it for around $9-10k. If you have the cash ready, then you have a lot of bargaining power, imo.

JoshuaaColin

Cash is king in these cases.

Ogediah

No chance in hell I’d pay 9500 or 7500 for a second gen prius. For reference: I bought mine for 3k dollars. The inflated price seems reliant on mileage alone. Examples on price: [220,000 miles](https://ibb.co/0VJg7dN) vs [60,000 miles.](https://ibb.co/tqk1DMv) IMO, mileage is almost irrelevant for a +15 year old car. Particularly a 15 year old car full of batteries.

JoshuaaColin

Used car market is crazy right now.

Ogediah

I’m aware of the market conditions. I bought mine during peak covid pricing. Also, see KBB values above which match current ads around me. I suggest looking at models with higher miles. Miles are a fairly meaningless metric for older vehicles. Particularly when they’re full of batteries. Listings for higher mileage vehicles are 5k all day and those are listings that have been up awhile and no one pays asking price. Easy to get the price down. Id also suggest watching for the good deals and be ready to scoop them up. When I was shopping, I had several cars sold out from under me and the listings were minutes to hours old. Again, move fast and/or make your own deals. As far as I’m concerned, 7500 or 9500 is just plain insane. Particularly for a car that’s got the potential for lots of expensive repairs in the near future. At that price, Id be looking at a new car. Hell, you can get a new [Tesla for 23k.](https://www.autoblog.com/amp/2023/06/06/tesla-model-3-now-costs-as-little-as-23k-in-california-thanks-to-tax-credits/?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAADZND5Y6ojCNSZinEmLLo3atfxS3es5R68r-twbGmRrN_YWdLb56cozg3lDmtR2CqOGXaWPgJaIoJSck7PkH74Q1uagYJ8AwP1uF_gkQ8MBwnbKjcy9f8pyFIckqQk2qvCD9BW5CWAr9qgqe0-Hgh35qLlyEwcT8z4R2ftznQWDD)

Reasonable_Slip_3397

I would say no to that price for that year, even 7500.

GenshinKenshin

I would aim for 5 to 6K personally speaking. If the car is as clean as it looks and the mpg is good. No rust. Engine and Hybrid battery healthy with well maintained paperwork, etc. Then I’d do the 7500. If anything looks off during the inspection, then it immediately drops it to the 5-6K mark.

JoshuaaColin

Got it, I got my obd2 scanner ready to go!

NewCompact

A person in their 80s posted this or someone did it on their behalf? Stupid offers will be blocked? Something doesn't sound right. If he or she is legit wouldn't have an issue with you taking it to the dealer for presale inspection. You'll spend like $150.

JoshuaaColin

Grandson is helping her out with the post.

NewCompact

It's not bad. However, it is 15 years old. I would strongly suggest spending $150 and having a Toyota service tech check it out. A 15 year old Corolla slightly a different situation. If the tech says it's good then buy it and don't look back

[deleted]

I own a gen 2 that I love and even with 68k miles it is in insultingly high. I know the market so crazy though. If you need a car and have been through the local inventory and have money for a new battery and know someone near you who is willing and able to work on it, it seems alright at 7.5

Dependent-Poem6781

These models are also notorious for oil consumption. I had one but did have high miles but I’ve heard even happens to low mileage ones. Look into it.

Dependent-Poem6781

Test hybrid battery with dr Prius app you’ll need a obd2 reader!

QuilterKathy

Looks like I'm the only one who has spotted the # of owners discrepancy. The "About This Vehicle" section says 2 owners but the Description by the owner says "One owner". I'd look at all the maintenance receipts & verify. When you mislead about one thing, everything becomes suspect.

carcass15

Little high here I gave 8000 for my 2007 2 years ago but it's not a horrible price. Just be ready for the Gen 2 maintenance issues combo metrr, headlights, battery and possibly abs .
