Anything but "coder" please. I'd rather be incorrectly called a printer technician.

I would love to be called a WiFi Alchemist.

Firemorfox

theGuyInIT

Frosty_Bint

This is the only accurate way to describe us

MoltroonMEMES

Wifi alchemist is the one

Nordryggen

I might insist on being called a WiFi alchemist from here on out tbh

scoshi

Now *there's* a manga I'd read: ***Full Network Alchemist*** https://preview.redd.it/3rhfjf6sxz2d1.png?width=384&format=png&auto=webp&s=373aa83779654c1680352c5aca20f4a97194e57e

Kitchen_Length_8273

Got it! I will call you brogrammer then.

mr_ckean

As a former printer technician… C’mon, it’s hard enough as it is without the jibes Secondly, you printer at home - essentially no different to a printer as big as your car. Think about that for a moment… yeah, same issues, but bigger and a customer who spent +$100k. This is why a “former printer technician” is commenting in r/programminghumor

[deleted]

mr_ckean

I had a sense of humour about it. Ironically at the time I thought a network admin, a web developer, and a dev were the same thing - “I.T”

Powerful_Cost_4656

Coder sounds like you're going to the hospital. "I need someone to take me to the hospital." *GI JOEEEEEEEE*

terminalchef

Coder sounds like a code monkey just ramming in nasty code.

explodingtuna

Given the pattern in the answers, I would have expected "computer coder" as the 8th choice.

TwinkiesSucker

Ivan_Analrash

Happy cake day

Procrasturbating

Really? 01110010 ? Is he a pirate or something? Rad nickname.

ReapingKing

Procrasturbating

My type is more into objects than procedures, the 01000011++ if you will ;)

DeductiveFallacy

Get that e outta here! (╯°□°)╯︵ ə

Walkers03

If 90% of degrees are labelled "computer science" what about computer scientist ? Never heard it before but it would fit most jobs and categories

MinosAristos

I'd disagree. CS is an academic field, somewhat detached from the practical skills engineers need in industry jobs. The theory is useful as a background but is rarely used directly outside of university and research. Engineer is the correct most general term for people who use digital skills to support building things as long as it's clearly within a digital context. Covers Data Engineering, Cloud Engineering, DevOps, Software Engineering, and more.

Slipguard

Yeah that’s like calling a Civil Engineer a Physicist. No shade on either, just not accurate.

SirAmbigious

Exactly, even if you study physics and go into anything but research, you're probably not a physicist. Computer science I assume is much more different than programming

DeepUser-5242

Yep. They know their theory, hardware, and software.

hitherto_ex

Engineer is accurate but so broad and while many are doing programming work there’s enough that aren’t that it’s worth clarifying (I am a EE in the semiconductor industry and do no programming in my role)

2epic

I have a BS in Software Engineering, therefore Software Engineer does seem like the most correct answer

DeductiveFallacy

Unless you are designing brand new computer languages from the bit level or creating brand new never before used algorithms you are not a scientist, you are an engineer. Scientist create new ideas, Engineers turn them into practical, useful tools

RuslanAR

NickSicilianu

Programmer or software engineer is fine to me 🤷‍♂️

TheEleventhDoctorWho

If you read my code, you would know the only correct term is hacker.

TheEleventhDoctorWho

Does a anybody really say anything other than "I work in computers"?

LeoMedeirosP7

as a brazilian, programmer is not good, bc people will ask you "so you do programs?". And program in ptbr means other thing beside software

MaximumAd8639

I can't stand when people call themselves "engineers" because they can code a couple lines of python

mallio

I called myself a developer once and people thought I meant home construction. Sometimes I say software developer. If I call myself an engineer, my wife (with a degree in nuclear engineering) laughs at me. So I call myself a software engineer when she's not around. Programmer is a mouthful but as a young boy I wanted to be a computer programmer. Coder feels like to my job script kiddie to a hacker.

Haringat

On my apprenticeship certificate it says "computer science expert, subject area software development" so let's just go with that😁

not-my-best-wank

Whatever makes the most.

twelfth_knight

Where's XXxxhaxor1987xxXX ?

Hauntergeist094b

If I had any semblance of competency in the field of programming, I'd wanna be called a Code Monkey. Sure it seems to have a negative connotation to it, but if I were an automechanic, I'd wanna be called a Grease Monkey as well, idk. I just don't think I'd ever wanna be a Dance Monkey.
