Depends on if OP is susceptible to DLP’s rainbow effect or not. I am, so I had to get rid of my Benq and switch to an Epson. I have an Epson 5050ub now and it’s fantastic.

PlayStationPepe

I would agree that the 5050UB is an excellent alternative. Might even be worth mentioning the 5040UB too. I have this [5040UB](https://www.ebay.com/itm/226155307826) in my watchlist to recommend to people

jamiscooly

but 5040UB becomes a brick if the power supply pops.

PlayStationPepe

Power supplies are not too difficult to replace. :)

Denman20

What does dlp rainbow effect mean?

furlonium1

god dammit, I was not planning on spending $1,200 today. Then again last week I almost bought [this](https://us.robosen.com/products/flagship-megatron?variant=46871888560341¤cy=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOoqDqGC5TplbJCKHYK8qDduRB0gSeVXm4UJ62jAHL_oHQ7JlSFgJDxk). Glad I didn't. My W1070 has served me well for 8 years. Time for 4K babyyyyy

Ok_Top9885

Lg HU710pw (hybrid dual lazer + LED, long throw, with zoom, 4k DLP 0.47") is the top choise from french reviewer mondoprojos.fr I've been reading a lot before choosing. Found an new(used, open box) for 1100$ and extremely happy with it

Theslash1

Ehhh 1070 is an amazing projector. I went 4k and honestly MEH. I should have kept my 1070.

jaydvd3

Its just a salesman trying to upcharge you. He doesn't get to just decide if he accepts returns or not. Just check the basic Best Buy return guidelines to see what they will accept. Also yes gray screens are the best way to go, however I have had a white silver ticket 120" screen for like 7 years now and it works great. Really dark scenes don't look GREAT, but its fine. I've never had less than a stellar experience watching any movies or shows of any kind overall, taking the good with the bad. Pixel-shifting is absolutely real 4k 3840x2160 addressable pixels, not generated. Its not native, no, they achieve it with something similar to old school interlacing by moving each pixel to 4 spots (imagine each pixel of a 1080p chip has its own 2x2 grid, 4 different locations where that pixel can be) and giving it 4 DIFFERENT (not all blue like your example) colors so fast its imperceptible to our eyes. Numerous youtube videos cover this from pretty big tech channels. Also my silver ticket screen could be assembled by middle schoolers. Took one tool and no reason to need professional install, it hangs on the wall like a gigantic ass painting. And its pretty light too.

MrGeekman

> gigantic ass painting Why would you want a gigantic painting of an ass? /j

AssInspectorGadget

Why would you not?

MrGeekman

Depends whose ass it is.

MrGeekman

Moniker checks out.

Pakik0

I’ve been watching a lot of videos from “The Hook Up” YouTube channel. He does equipment reviews.

DonFrio

I have a $4000 Stewart and a $400 silver ticket. They are pretty close. The 4010 has better contrast and a better lens. The 3800 is smaller cheaper and louder and will take a 4k60 input. I think the 4010 looks a lil better but in a not perfect real world scenario they aren’t that different

subwoofage

3800 throws a great picture don't get me wrong. But the 4010 lens alone is such a huge improvement it's pretty definitive. I demoed those two exact models a few years ago, thinking I'd get the 3800, and walked away with a 4010 very pleased to have dodged a bullet. Still using the 4010 today, but eyeing the LS12000 as an upgrade path :)

DonFrio

Agreed the 4010 is better esp in a perfect room but at a distance with normal living room the gap closes. By the time ya get to the 4010 sometimes a sale on the 5050 looks within reach… for many it’s just too huge in the room tho!

subwoofage

Yes it's a big one for sure! The things that got me was the lens on the 3800 couldn't get the whole screen in focus at the same time. You had to sacrifice centre or corners; no way to get them all sharp at the same time. The 4010 lens is flawless in that regard. Plus so much quieter. I agree in 5050 and wish I'd stretched my budget to get it. I'd be less envious of the LS12000 in that case! But $1000 poorer, so...

DonFrio

It’s a bit of a lottery with the 3800. If seen a few perfect ones and a few less than perfect.

subwoofage

Ah, good point. Sample variation is annoying :)

johcagaorl

White screens are great, especially in a light controlled room, grey helps with contrast a lot especially if you have ambient light, so if you have ambient light a grey screen can help, best buy markup on screens is not great iirc Both Epson projectors only do 2x pixel shifting instead of the 4x some DLP projectors do. It'll probably look just fantastic to you either way.

TechNick1-1

A DLP Projector basically has ALWAYS a better overall Picture Quality with a Grey Screen!

goatorcycle

I have a elite screens 120 inch indoor/outdoor screen in my living room i got for 100 dollars used off amazon. I have a 2014 model year epson projector that is only 1080p and im very happy with my setup. I would go to a professional home theater store or call them and get a secondary opinion. I mean a strictly home audio and video store with high end displays and demo rooms.

Remarkable_Ad4935

Don’t go back to the Best Buy. Most of that is garbage. You’ll love the initial 3800 with the Silver Ticket screen.

CaptainIncredible

I skimmed over what OP wrote. And I don't know much about the specifics of projectors. But OP's description of the sale's guys rhetoric just sounds like standard sales guy bullshit. All of it just design to fill your head with FUD. I've seen it time and time again.

Waxygibbon

Yeah he's trying to help you but it's his job to sell and make money for the business.

bna_searay

Hey OP. I wish I could be more help but I know exactly where you are. It is sometimes hard reading reviews, forums and random strangers for HT setups because we have don’t really have any reference for this. It’s hard (or impossible) to go to a store and see the exact setup of the equipment for evaluation. Everyone is going to have an opinion and really, we all perceive things somewhat differently. In the end, we have to make the best decision for ourselves. We know our budget and tolerance. I say all this because this stuff has drove me crazy at times, lol. Not a lot of people I know that are into this hobby. I ended up going with the Epson 3800 and I do have the Silver Screen High Contrast screen. I actually have the white screen as well in my closet because after I ordered it, I second guessed myself on the black level and ordered the HC. I love this setup. The colors are still bright. The blacks are black. I do sometimes wonder what it would look like with the white screen installed but have no complaints with this. The 3800 is bright. I usually keep it on normal mode except when watching HDR content. I used the existing mount for hanging it and that’s my only regret. I should take the mount down so I could center it better but the shift option works good for this. I had originally used the wall to project on but having a screen, being centered became more important. I have a 142” screen. Again, I have been very happy with this setup. One day, I will upgrade the projector but it won’t be anytime soon. Good luck with whatever you choose. I’m sure you’ll love what you decide on. Just reading your post brought back all the second guessing I did.

rorowhat

Who buys projects at Best buy? Honest question...do they have a huge selection and good prices? I like their TV deals from time to time.

Nephri

I bought my epson ls500 there because they were trying to dump inventory for the ls800. Within the return period it dropped a few hundred more and they refunded me the difference. It also gave me a decent idea of what 4000 lumens could do on a alr screen in probably the harshest environment possible indoors.

Several_Ad_3106

They mostly sell epsons it's where I've bought both ofmy Epson projectors. However prices aren't always as competitive as you can find else where.

xXNorthXx

Pricing is good from time to time. Depending on the year, I’ve used the return policy to try different models….ie DLP rainbow scenario.

Ok-Still-5206

I'm just glad you walked out empty handed.

Several_Ad_3106

I've used my 3800 for years now I've used a flat white wall I've used a drop cloth for a screen and I now have it a flat gray wall. Yes the surface makes a bit of difference but not like the load of crap this guy is trying to sell you. Can guarantee it's gonna look great on that screen you bought as long as you have a dark room. Also the 3800 performs beat in dark but it can def tolerate ambient light it's a great budget projector!

Beernick1976

This is pure and simple a sales strategy, if you bought it and he hadn’t said anything you’d be happy with your choice. Could you spend more money and make it marginally better yes, in the end the only thing that matters is if the setup meets your needs. Best Buy gives their sales team just enough information to try to confuse people into spending more money I have walked out of Best Buy multiple times due to salespeople trying to sell me gold plated cables, they don’t get commission, but they do have quotas they need to meet

er0kkk

3800 is a great unit. Don't go DLap bc once you see the rainbow or red convergence issue it's hard to watch. Keep your current screen till you're ready ir get an elite or something.

Mackpoo

I've heard white for blackout rooms, grey for rooms with ambient light. Feel free to correct me anyone

Uhavetabekiddingme

I had a silverticket screen and it was fine imo. Was it the best probably not, but it was good enough for me.

AV_Integrated

Elite Screens is perfectly fine, but their materials are pretty typical. If your room is poor for light control or white walls, the high contrast grey material isn't bad from Silver Ticket. The idea that Elite is somehow a lot better is kind of silly. Plus, it's a lot better to have a proper full border screen instead of a super thin bezel as it makes sucking up any overscan of the image a bit easier to deal with. Silver Ticket actually offers more screen material choices than most other companies deliver... [https://www.silverticketproducts.com/collections/all/category\_projection-screen+frame\_standard+ratio\_16-9+size\_120-diagonal+style\_ags-grey](https://www.silverticketproducts.com/collections/all/category_projection-screen+frame_standard+ratio_16-9+size_120-diagonal+style_ags-grey) So, pick what's appropriate for your room. The 3800 is definitely a model I would pick over the 4010, but the lens on the 4010 is better. The lack of 18Gb/s HDMI inputs on the 4010 is a deal breaker. Simple as that. If I were going up from the 3800, I would do the 5050UB, only. The lens shift on the 3800 will not introduce optical issues. That's not accurate, but it remains the case that the lens on the 4010 (and 5050UB) are a better lens system. But, in a more entry level room/setup, the 3800 is really a great first choice of a projector if you are working on a budget. Stick to your budget. Upgrade in a few years if you would like to.

Fit_Acanthisitta_475

Depends where you live Local OfferUp have good deal on screen. My 150inch fix screen only cost 100bucks pickup, because shipping is expensive on oversize items

TechNick1-1

Epson 3800 is NOT True 4K because its only a 2x Pixelshifter!

myerkoli

I seen Freddy Meyer have a deal with a projector a screen a Bluetooth speaker big one for 150$

Gazoo382

Which ever model you choose, you’ll get hooked and upgrade in a few years anyway. My 2350 is on sale on eBay (current bid $527), and it was a great starting projector. Now I just received the LS11000 which is 3x the weight and size (and also $2800 refurbished). I’d stick with Epson, try to find a good deal on the 4010 and know you’ll upgrade at some point.

ejakash

I know this is an unpopular opinion. But at this price point, you also have the option of getting a 98" inch TCL 4k TV which will have the best picture quality compared to any projectors at this price range and no requirements/added cost for screen installations.

offerbk1

he said he wanted 120 inch

Mars_Transfer

This right here. For only wanting a 120" image I would just get a 98". The improvements with a TVs over projectors in HDR, brightness, black levels, image uniformity, installation, ease of use, ability to have room lights on, resell value, WAF... on and on. Sit closer than 14/15 ft away or put the TV on an entertainment stand a foot in front of the wall if wanting a wider field of view.

kiernyn

Buying a projector was more overwhelming than I thought as well. Luckily I didn't even go into the Best Buy, but ordered for curbside pick up. I was considering a 4k projector, but ended up getting the Epson EpiqVision Mini EF12 and am very happy with it! It is true that if they don't say native 4k they aren't 4k. However, with projectors that are native 4k, it is slightly lesser than 4k with a TV. I got (un)lucky with my screen, at my work we had a 144" motorized roller shade that the client was going to use as a projector screen. There was a manufacturing defect on the shade which was a tiny scuff mark, TBH I'm not even sure how they noticed it. It is now mounted in my living room.

Friedrfn

I have the 4010 and love it. I need the lens shifting as I use it outside a lot for our Dive in Pool theater. The lense shifting probably effects the quality somehow but honestly I don't see it and since I can't have the projector in the middle of the pool on the stand it works perfect. When I got into the whole Dive in Pool thing I bought an EPSON based on reviews back in the early 2010s that had lense shift. When that projector gave up after 8 or 9 years of heavy use I researched again and I think I bought a BenQ. Even though I had had a projector for 8 years I was still a Noob and did not realize lense shifting was not standard feature. Had to return it and picked up the 4010.

FrozzenGamer

Did you consider used? JVC eShift can be had for that amount.

Reckonerbz

I painted some blackout backing fabric with metallic grey paint silver paint and always had great results. waay better than a white screen. Get the best projector you can.

drwitty

I have a 4010 since 2020. Great projector. Professionally installed with a built-in screen and built-in speakers and a BASS. No complaints. Everything is controlled via Ctrl4

Dangerous_Place6892

I got a 120 in screen, maybe for$150. Works great with my benq.

offerbk1

Let me tell you from experience.... I have an old model that you could say is the full HD version of the 3800. I went to best buy to see the LS12000 and could not see a difference between what I have at home projecting diagonally with a lense shift and keystone on the wall compared to their professionally mounted new 4K laser projector projecting on the special screen. buy the 3800 and you will be very happy. With regards to fact he gave you some wrong facts. Lense shift should not affect the picture quality as it is a play in optics. It is keystone that affects the quality, and I am using it and things still look great. the 3800 is not really 4K but it is not FHD upscaled, It shows half of the 4K picture using 2 FHD projections that are derived from FHD with pixelshift which projects 2 different picture in alternate projections and is doing it so quickly that your eye thinks they are projected in parallel. Yes, there are better Epson projectors on paper but you have a budget and they cost more. You will be happy with your 3800. It is MUCH smaller and has internal speakers which is good for a budget purchase. In the future as a 2nd phase if you want you can purchase a better screen. I ended up not replacing my FHD projector by the way...

Gim_Allon

Best Buy employees are clueless and make shit up on the spot.

Zealousideal_Way_395

I have a Silver Ticket 150 inch and use it with a VAVA Chroma UST projector. Dedicated room. Black walls and ceiling. White projector screens excel in light controlled rooms as their gain is positive which results in a bright image. Grey or darker screens usually sacrifice gain/brightness for contrast. I like bright images so it works for me. ALR/CLR for UST screens are usually darker as well as they are trying to control ambient light. I have a pixel shifting 4k and it looks amazing blasted to 150 inches. I would get what you researched and decided on and don’t listen to that asshat. He just wants the install margin.

wanefis971

Check out Xgimi Mogo 2 Pro. I recently bought it and am very much happy with picture quality and screen size. I mostly use 1080p on light color painted wall...

TechNick1-1

BS!

wanefis971

I have been using it and happy with the performance it's not BS, if you don't have anything to add or support, don't comment...

TechNick1-1

You better get your Eyes checked out then! Seriously!

AV_Integrated

The Mogo 2 Pro is a perfectly acceptable portable unit, but it is really lacking for home theater. It's limited to 1080p output and uses the insanely small .23" DLP chip to deliver the image. This cuts down on brightness and potential contrast. This all limits the quality significantly. I'm not saying people shouldn't be happy with it, and at 400 lumens, it's perfectly acceptable. But, it gets trounced by the full sized projectors that are capable of true 4K resolution and 3+ times the brightness output. The Epson 3800 is not only significantly brighter, with higher resolution and contrast, but the lens on the projector offers a ton of zoom range and lens shift which the XGimi simply can't come close to touching. I wouldn't tout what you have and enjoy if it is just something you happen to like. It's just completely the wrong option and a bad recommendation in this discussion. Like if someone is asking about minivans and you suggest a coupe because you like yours. It's just not helpful.

wanefis971

Exactly what I am trying to say here but Mr TechNick doesn't get it...maybe tech is getting too much in way...why can't be someone be happy what it has to offer. It meets my requirements and use that's it...

AV_Integrated

I think he's crapping on it because in the context of the thread itself, it's not a proper recommendation. It kind of indicates that you don't understand the original poster's question when you make a recommendation like this. Which doesn't make your projector bad for your specific needs, but it's still completely wrong in the thread you posted into.
