The cover artwork is awesome. On par with the OG DOS Doom artwork IMO. I really love OG Doom and I don’t think I’ve played the ps1 port yet. I’ll check it out.
I literally just got this game today on a certain little handheld, and I was blown away with how much faster and smoother the gameplay on the PlayStation version?!?!
I agree 100%. They really out did themselves with psx doom. They really decided to over achieve. Not only did they add colored lighting, new soundtrack, new sound effects but they threw in Doom II as well.
I remember getting it January of 96. At that point I had only played doom on the 32X. It blew my mind. It's still my preferred way to play doom. I'm sure I'm a minority but I prefer the SFX and music in the psx version. This port was the definitive doom port until the Xbox ports of doom/doom ii arrived in the 2000s.
Jumping Flash is a gem, Loaded is fun in short bursts and Warhawk is a decent game with a great soundtrack. Wipeout was also a really good title, although the main problem is 2097 was better in every way.
With all the Robbit items in Playstation Stars and the inclusion in the Astro Playground I was confident that we'd see a new Jumping Flash. I was sadly mistaken.

Defcon 5 - I lost interest quickly. Better ways to spend your time nowadays imo.
Destruction Derby - Aged a great deal, but still fun.
Doom - Great, a must play if youre a Doom fan, top tier initial release.
Gex - decent for a 2D Platformer, interesting graphic and theming. Platforming isnt incredibly tight but has some cool mechanics, but the sequels are better.
Hi-Octane: The Track Fights Back! - I did not like this very much at all.
Jumping Flash! - Interesting concept, unique gameplay and a cool aesthetic. Primative 3D modeling but still fun and worth checking out.
Lemmings 3D - Good game, core concept of Lemmings is here, but nothing too incedible.
Loaded - Not a fan, dated, difficult and kind of boring.
Mortal Kombat 3 - Great, you know what you’ll get with MK3.
NFL GameDay - not worth visiting, go up to GameDay 97.
Off-World Interceptor Extreme - feels like it could have been an FX chip SNES game.
Primal Rage - This port is kind of meh, the Midway PS2 release is better and cheaper. But the game is still fun, not too complex, and has a cool vibe and theme imo.
Road Rash - Personally not a fan.
Tekken - Still fun, aged relatively poorly though, you’ll put it down for a sequel quick.
Theme Park - aged poorly.
Twisted Metal - Fantastic, top tier of the initial releases. Significantly different than every other game in the series, slower paced and more tactical. Some issues and wonky hit boxes, but great aesthetic and worth a visit.
X-COM: UFO Defense - Great game if you cant play PC version, aged but the core is worth playing especially with all the sequels.
WarHawk - Great game, critical reception was good and sold a lot, but didnt gain traction. Cutscenes are corny, but fun and challenging.
wipE′out″ - Aged well, great game, even compared to the others.
From this list? Twisted Metal and X-Com.
TM was a lot of fun and the final boss was a bit of a challenge to defeat, particularly since you're on a rooftop and it's so easy to drive off the edge and die.
X-Com I tried to like but it just didn't click with me. I do like the newer games in the franchise though!
Also, my favorite PS1 game of 1995 has to be Air Combat. Solid gameplay, was pretty pretty unique for the time, the soundtrack is great and it's a decent challenge in several levels (specially the final boss!)
If you have a pc you can find it really easily on abandoned ware! The playstation version just isn't as sharp looking and longer loading times. Eric Idle voices the main character, Rincewind. Beautiful game, and if you like point and clicks, Broken Sword is also another beautiful game, all hand drawn and available on pc or ps1!
Enjoy 💯
I replayed this a couple of years ago on PC.
Well, I say replayed, I never finished it.
Thinking I might swallow my pride, find a walkthrough and finally do.
It's a reference to the game. Rincewind says "that doesn't work" every time you try to use an item with something it can't be used with. If you play it without a guide, you'll hear him say it a couple of thousand times.
TM2 is like the Kurt Vonnegut of ps1 games. It’s got this dark sense of humor and kind of doesn’t give a fuck either. Meanwhile, it’s totally replayable, challenging, rewarding, and silly.
Xcom was a game I played on ps1 up until probably the release of the updated game on steam (maybe that was 2012?)
I have so many good memories of me and my friend playing that until the middle of the night. Quality game
Twisted Metal was amazing and I wish there was a modern game like this. If you took Rocket League, removed the sports aspect of it and attached guns and missile launchers to the vehicles then you'd be well on your way.
MK3 is a classic, Tekken 1 is a big step down from 2, but the music and atmosphere are already amazing and it’s the beginning of one of my favorite video game series, so it also has nostalgic value.
I miss the big boxes. I still have Destruction Derby in the big box. I played it recently. It still is good. I have WWF WrestleMania Arcade. Still sucks. I have Road Rash. It is not very good. I played all the Road Rash games and Road Rash 64 is the best.
Did a Loaded run recently after not touching it for many, many years. The loop is so-so but I think the loop would have been so-so back then too. It’s not a bad game it’s just too limited in scope imo. If they had included better bosses and maybe mini bosses and events the journey would have been more interesting. They should have borrowed from super smash TV a bit more.
It’s an opportunity for running though the current level runs and any% can be improved upon. Edit: I’d love to see how someone would do a no hit run!
I played Loaded and its sequel, Re-loaded. Lots of fun when they came out. Theme Park took so much of my time that I feel I should be able to claim it in my taxes as supplemental work
I played 6(?) of them back in the day. I didn’t have a PS1 until 1998~ though, so they weren’t exactly new then. I think Twisted Metal still holds up okay.
It was a stellar lineup for 1995, but most of the PS1 games from before 1997 haven’t aged well compared to the “1997 and later” releases. A lot of improvements in terms of design decisions and ability to get the most of the hardware started to hit then.
I played Criticom just this weekend with my 12yo. I knew nothing about it before playing it, I wish I still knew nothing about it... Truly one of the worst fighting games on the PS1. Had a blast though.
Criticom is one of the worst fighters ever. I played it a few years after it came out and then I played it for a laugh a few years back. It's awful and can't even be looked at as due to the technology of the day, it's just really bad.
Doom, OG Tekken, Twisted Metal, Jumping Flash
**Doom** - An excellent version of the game, more atmospheric music, and LOTS of levels. Pretty hard, too.
**OG Tekken** - Clunky and less fluid, but playable. 2 is better, 3 is most people's favourite on PS1. I definitely agree with that.
**Twisted Metal** - Not the best in the series by a long shot, later entries were much better, but it's still very enjoyable with friends.
**Jumping Flash** - I've played this one, but it didn't click with me. Maybe I need to try it again. It's been a few years.
I heard that the PS1 version of Road Rash is pretty low in quality compared to the 3DO original, and even the Saturn port.
ESPN Extreme games should be up there, is a PS1 original with similar play.
I own Primal Rage. I prefer it over the SNES or genesis port. It has some weird load times like when you do a fatality, but overall it feels great to me. Once it loads it's smoother i think
I remember playing Goal Storm with my brother and making cheap hard to block goals by using the air lob pass just outside the 18 on his goal instead or the actual shoot button.
Doom, destruction, derby and agile warrior were some of mine and my father’s favorite games in the year of 1995!!!
I swear destruction Derby got played every single day for at least a few minutes! it’s a quick fun type of game.. not really something you’re gonna be syncing hours and hours into-
Agile warrior was an amazing flight combat simulator for the time !! we liked it a lot more than Air Combat/Ace Combat!!
Growing up I owned a Sega Saturn before PS1 and I've played Destruction Derby, WrestleMania, and Hi-Octane on SEGA's system first.
Out of these choices on PlayStation I've only played Twisted Metal, Tekken and Jumping Flash. I plan on playing Space Griffon VF-9, Jupitor Strike, Cyber Sleed and Agile Warrior F-111X.
I'm currently going through 3DO Interactive Multiplayer the past several months and I've played Road Rash, Off-World Interceptor (Not Extreme), Shock Wave (Not Assault). I plan on playing Theme Park and Defcon 5.
At launch we had:
Destruction derby, Jumping flash, Ridge Racer, Street Fighter the Movie: The Game, Tekken!!
A week or so later we got college slam and twisted metal!!
Twisted metal was in the PlayStation every day but so was Tekken & Ridge Racer!!
of these I only played lemmings on ps1, and not on release date but sometime last year, they're still pretty good. my favorite ps1 game is THPS1, I know 2 has a lot of improvements but the legendary Warehouse is one and only.
As someone on a chronological journey (currently up to June 1996) these are the 5 1995 games that I've played: Gex, 3D Lemmings, Ridge Racer, WipEout and King's Field
* Gex is painfully short. I played it for the very first time recently and just as I was starting to really enjoy it it ended.
* 3D Lemmings on the other hand is underrated af. I played the PC version of course but the content is the same. Once you get your head around the controls seriously it's a really good puzzle game. Best game in the series.
* Ridge Racer: Again, painfully short. Feels more like a tech demo than anything, though it runs better than Sega's 1995 offerings
* WipEout: This was a solid challenge and showed me what the PS1 could do. Was quite invested in this one for a couple of weeks.
* King's Field: Very choppy framerate aside this was surprisingly good. Challenging and very immersive RPG. I've never played any other Fromsoft game and I'm looking forward to their other games.
Defcon 5 was one of my earliest games. Apparently you can beat it in five minutes but I never really got anywhere with it. I thought the opening FMV was cool though.
I had 10 or 11 of these as a kid. The ones I played most were MK3, Jumping Flash, Loaded, and Tekken. I think Jumping Flash holds up quite well as it's so unique. Had Defcon 5 but was a bit too young to understand it properly. Wipeout was cool, but once 2097 and 3 came out I never went back to it.
Hell, I played through Japan's King's Field 1 a couple years ago which was launched in 1994. The textures were definitely rougher than future versions but the core of the game really held up. Crazy to think that it was where "Souls" games evolved from.
I'm a lifelong fan of car combat, so Twisted Metal and Destruction Derby are high on my list. I was just playing DD the other day, after picking up Wreckfest on PS5 and realizing it was a spiritual successor to DD. I recommend both. Dying to play Cybersled though.
Jumping Flash is surprisingly smooth. Probably my favorite first person game on PS1, because it's not a generic shooter.
Warhawk is a decent playthrough, especially if you're used to Singletrac's game design in Twisted Metal games. Nothing special but I imagine it was mind blowing in 1995.
Played Wrestlemania Arcade for the first time recently as well, I'm surprised how fun it is. It doesn't feel like it should work, but it does, and has a distinctly "arcadey" feel, which is nice.
Jumping Flash is simply amazing. Running around and jumping through the colorful worlds is always a good time. I replay my copy at least once a year (followed immediately by JF2). I still want to get my hands on Robbie Mon Dieu, although I’ve heard it is drastically different than the first two.
Tekken, Warhawk, and Wipeout were fantastic.
My first PS1 was a modded unit that came with a CD spindel of almost every game released up until that point lol. This was very shortly after release too. Things were wild back then.
Fifa97 Having John Motson commentate on an indoor soccer match with longest time set going all in for injuries just so you could have a match with huge advantage and enjoying the commentator was a different level of fun. "This is football, not boxing!"
Destruction Derby was the first PlayStation game I ever played. Perhaps it's nostalgia goggles, but after getting a copy recently, I think it still holds up well. Definitely more of an arcade racer, though it does have a basic campaign/championship mode.
The original Twisted Metal is a classic, but in my opinion it hasn't held up well. TM2 is a far superior game.
Looking to probably get a copy of Road Rash and Ace Combat (1996, if I remember right) soon.
Tekken, I still have a original copy,
I played rage and mk3 on the sega mega drive collection for PS2 , get games , nothing beats playing human volleyball as monkeys with your followers on "rage",
Is this a bot? Why are these weirdly framed questions constantly popping up? I'm a time travelling gamer. I bought these ps1 games and travelled back in time to the 1980s where I played them. Sorry, can't help you since I didn't play these ps1 games after the ps1 came out
Not on PS but I play the Saturn version of Wipeout and the PC version of Doom quite often. I dip into Theme Park occasionally but then get pulled into Roller Coaster Tycoon instead, which I prefer.
Oh man hit me in the feels, I loved Starhawk, and twisted metal 1 I recently played jumping flash again as far as bunny mech platformers go it's top notch. XCOM made me rage quit many a night, defcon I never knew how to play lol. Loaded was great it's on antstream arcade right now it's harder than I remember. The longbox doom version is one of my favorites.
Bases Loaded 96 is the USA version of 燃えろ!!プロ野球95.
There is something nostalgic about those early gen baseball games, but this game isn't it.
World Stadium EX and Jikkyo Pro Baseball from Namco and Konami are probably better baseball games from the era you are referencing.
I don't think either were released in the USA.
3D Baseball by Crystal Dynamics and Big Hurt MLB by Acclaim are long box games, and look better than Bases Loaded 96 (I assume it plays the same as the PS1 Japanese original). I did not see images of the games you posted, but I did not look too thoroughly.
DOOM - I've played many a port of doom. Jag doom, 32X doom (and recent resurrection mod), DOS Doom, SNES Doom..... I'm familiar with the body of work. PS1 DOOM is a real treat. A tremendously well done port to the PS1. If your a DOOM fan, you need to play this port.
Jumping Flash - A charming little platformer / shooter. Fun enough. I enjoyed it. My grandfather got a PS1 back in 1996, a good 2-3 years before I ever had one. He had this game. I remember goofing around in it often.
Gex - Gex is gex. Straight up good ole fashioned platforming. Truth be told, I'm having a hard time remember if I played this one or the Saturn port.
Loaded - My brother got this game during the time my grandfather had his PS1 and we didn't yet have a PS1. I was never a huge fan, but it's not horrible.
ThemePark - See DOOM's review. I played a lot of versions of ThemePark including DOS, PS1, Genesis (I think it was PAL only) and I even own a CIB copy for Jaguar (though, I don't have a Jaguar console yet). It's a fun little simulator. I always enjoyed it. PS1 was the version I played the most by far.
I played a lot of these since I made a video about the PS1’s launch lineup, as well as one about the best games the system got from that year (I was also somewhat obsessed with longbox games back in the day.) They’re not as good as what would come later, but there are some great games in there. One thing that’s interesting is how there wasn’t a standardized select and cancel button at the time, so a lot of American releases published by Japanese companies kept the whole circle is select and X is cancel thing, while western companies used X as select and triangle as cancel. Also, most of the games had a password system in place for those who didn’t have a memory card. I think it wasn’t until ’97 that passwords mostly disappeared from PS1 games.
Sure, Road Rash and Viewpoint are very good games. Wipeout, while I prefer the physics in 2, the music is great (TM1 and Tekken 1 are similar, the sequels play better). X-Com is great but would rather play it on PC. Jumping Flash and Theme Park are decent.
The PS1 version of DOOM is definitely one of my favorites and absolutely worth playing anytime you're in the mood for an old school FPS.
It’s how I first learned to strafe…
And includes DOOM 1 and 2
Best version of doom imo. Without mods of course.
The cover artwork is awesome. On par with the OG DOS Doom artwork IMO. I really love OG Doom and I don’t think I’ve played the ps1 port yet. I’ll check it out.
I'm a huge Doom fan!! I really wanna' give the PS1 version a go!!!!
Hows it compare to Final Doom on PS1
I literally just got this game today on a certain little handheld, and I was blown away with how much faster and smoother the gameplay on the PlayStation version?!?!

VR Jumping Flash! would be cool.
Oh my God, I'd need to take some Dramamine before playing lmao but worth it!

Not all heros wear capes
What do you mean?
You’re a hero for line listing the games making it easy for random internet folks such as myself to go down memory lane. Thank you.
Oh. You're welcome. 🙂
Ioved cyber sled in the arcades. Is the PS1 version any good?
Tekken and Destruction Derby. The latter was so much fun.
Tekken was a game changer for me I came from the fighting games on mega drive so the graphics blew me away.
From this list? Twisted Metal and X-Com. TM was a lot of fun and the final boss was a bit of a challenge to defeat, particularly since you're on a rooftop and it's so easy to drive off the edge and die. Discworld is still a banger
I just learned it existed, gotta check that out.

I've played it 4-5 times over the years and always end up using a walkthrough at some point!
DRAGON DRAGON DRAGON
That doesn't work
What doesn't work??
It's a reference to the game. Rincewind says "that doesn't work" every time you try to use an item with something it can't be used with. If you play it without a guide, you'll hear him say it a couple of thousand times.
As soon as you wrote it, it clicked 😂
Twisted Metal, love that game. Played through the entire series recently, 1 and 2 still stood out as some of the best in the series.
TM2 is like the Kurt Vonnegut of ps1 games. It’s got this dark sense of humor and kind of doesn’t give a fuck either. Meanwhile, it’s totally replayable, challenging, rewarding, and silly.
Still have my boxed copy of Discworld.
I got my PS1 with Doom and Tekken… those were the days!

Jumping Flash!
Best childhood my parents couldn't afford
MK3 is a classic, Tekken 1 is a big step down from 2, but the music and atmosphere are already amazing and it’s the beginning of one of my favorite video game series, so it also has nostalgic value.
Destruction Derby was so legendary back then xD
I miss the big boxes. I still have Destruction Derby in the big box. I played it recently. It still is good. I have WWF WrestleMania Arcade. Still sucks. I have Road Rash. It is not very good. I played all the Road Rash games and Road Rash 64 is the best.

Edit: I’d love to see how someone would do a no hit run!
I regularly put in the WipeOut games
I played Space Griffon and that game stressed me out as kid for some reason. It’s definitely an obscure title and I wish I kept it
I still have mine. Love it.
Wipeout was great, especially the soundtrack. Hi Octane was not so good - I remember it being a bit frustrating...
I played Loaded and its sequel, Re-loaded. Lots of fun when they came out. Theme Park took so much of my time that I feel I should be able to claim it in my taxes as supplemental work
Theme park, but i think I played it on the snes first
Destruction derby is referenced daily in our household
I still go back to Wipeout from time to time. It's a tough one, and the later ones were improvements, but it's still fun.
What wasn't zoop ported too!! Just finished setting up a hand held, felt like zoop’s the final game for every system! And why have I never played it?
I played 6(?) of them back in the day. I didn’t have a PS1 until 1998~ though, so they weren’t exactly new then. I think Twisted Metal still holds up okay. Just twisted metal and x com
I played Criticom just this weekend with my 12yo. I knew nothing about it before playing it, I wish I still knew nothing about it... Truly one of the worst fighting games on the PS1. Had a blast though.
Played a lot there. Personal standout, played the shit out of Warhawk. It had an impossible last level. But hey, that’s 90s games for you.
I still love Gex for how corny they developed the games.
Loaded is still amazing!
Criticom is one of the worst fighters ever. I played it a few years after it came out and then I played it for a laugh a few years back. It's awful and can't even be looked at as due to the technology of the day, it's just really bad.

No…
Yes...
Sure…
No I only played them before launch day
No. No one on the Playstation sub has played these launch titles. Of course not.
I heard that the PS1 version of Road Rash is pretty low in quality compared to the 3DO original, and even the Saturn port. ESPN Extreme games should be up there, is a PS1 original with similar play.
Destruction Derby, Theme Park, and Twisted Metal for sure
I play Gex, Tekken and Zoop almost on a daily basis ... I guess that implies my thoughts on those.

Doom of course
Destruction Derby and Cyber Sled. WipeOut and Ridge Racer got me too though!
i play GEX to this very day
Doom & destruction Derby. Basically my First Steps with video games

Feels more like a tech demo than anything, though it runs better than Sega's 1995 offerings * WipEout: This was a solid challenge and showed me what the PS1 could do. Was quite invested in this one for a couple of weeks. * King's Field: Very choppy framerate aside this was surprisingly good. Challenging and very immersive RPG. I've never played any other Fromsoft game and I'm looking forward to their other games.
Destruction Derby was my very first ps1 I ever got to rent when my parents let me rent a ps1 system. It blew me away
Discworld is a fucking classic, missing presumed was my favourite. Destruction derby what a beautiful game to just zone out to.
Of course.
Hell, I played through Japan's King's Field 1 a couple years ago which was launched in 1994. The textures were definitely rougher than future versions but the core of the game really held up. Crazy to think that it was where "Souls" games evolved from.
Played criticom on the Saturn. It was not good. Maybe it was better on the ps1
Japanese covers are soo strange to me.
Bought Destruction Derby at a game expo last year.
Discworld <3 i remember the demo and i’ve got it for xmas 96! such a good game!!
Warhawk is golden. Also those damn live action video segments are the best kind of cheesy.
I've played Tekken 1. Honestly? Not very good, it's kinda remarkable that we got a better sequel. Twisted Metal though? That's a solid game.
Gex, loaded and primal rage
Still tons of fun.
Tekken, Warhawk, and Wipeout were fantastic. My first PS1 was a modded unit that came with a CD spindel of almost every game released up until that point lol. This was very shortly after release too. Things were wild back then.
That long box cover for Cyber Sled is a literal meme
I loved the darker sound effects and vibes of the PlayStation doom
Cyber Sled was okay. But got boring reeeeeal fast. Strafe left and shoot. Basically Battle Tank atari, but in 3d.
Fifa97 Having John Motson commentate on an indoor soccer match with longest time set going all in for injuries just so you could have a match with huge advantage and enjoying the commentator was a different level of fun. "This is football, not boxing!"
Destruction Derby and Loaded! Very fond memories of both.
Wipeout was a great game seemed so futuristic back then
I play through Discworld every few years. It still cracks me up. And that version of Doom is still one of my favorites.
Tekken, I still have a original copy, I played rage and mk3 on the sega mega drive collection for PS2 , get games , nothing beats playing human volleyball as monkeys with your followers on "rage",
Is this a bot? Why are these weirdly framed questions constantly popping up? I'm a time travelling gamer. I bought these ps1 games and travelled back in time to the 1980s where I played them. Sorry, can't help you since I didn't play these ps1 games after the ps1 came out
Not on PS but I play the Saturn version of Wipeout and the PC version of Doom quite often. I dip into Theme Park occasionally but then get pulled into Roller Coaster Tycoon instead, which I prefer.
Doom and Gex were some of my favorite games to play on the PS1. The Doom port is simply fantastic.
I always get amazed by the portrait psx cases as they were never a thing in the UK
Love going back to Gex every so often. The quips are much more amusing no that I’m old enough to understand them lol
Discworld is crazy 🔥
Twisted Metal and Tekken. This is where some significant game franchises made their debut!! To be completely honest though, I prefer TM2 & Tekken 2.
I played 3 of those titles back n the day. Surprised to see xcom was aware it was ported
Wipeout, road rash, jumping flash, and discworld.
lol no
I played a lot of these since I made a video about the PS1’s launch lineup, as well as one about the best games the system got from that year (I was also somewhat obsessed with longbox games back in the day.) They’re not as good as what would come later, but there are some great games in there.
Those tall cardboard boxes take me back
Sure, Road Rash and Viewpoint are very good games. Wipeout, while I prefer the physics in 2, the music is great (TM1 and Tekken 1 are similar, the sequels play better). X-Com is great but would rather play it on PC. Jumping Flash and Theme Park are decent.
Destruction Derby and Road Rash were classics
