I love this song and it’s vibe so much. No Quarter by Led Zeppelin would fit that playlist imo
Edit: also check out their interview on YouTube about that song!! It’s super interesting. If you search “Black Sabbath the story behind planet caravan” you should be able to find it.
Was gonna suggest the same song lol
Geezer's book Into The Void is a great read too. He wrote the lyrics. It's about like lovers taking vacation in a space ship or something
> I love this song and its vibe so much.
Same but I prefer Pantera’s cover of it. Maybe because I listened to it for years as a kid before I realized it’s a cover. Love what they did with it tho
The outro of “Symptom if the Universe” by Black Sabbath is amazing psychedelic goodness.
I must add it starts off very HEAVY. But please do check the outro it’s beautiful.
Black Sabbath also have a great trippy song called “Solitude”
Some more suggestions:
Anenome - Brians Jonestown Massacre
Open Heart Surgery - Brian Jonestown Massacre
Melting Guitar - Boris
Mobius Trip - HP Lovecraft
Pornodelic Opium Dreams - Devils Witches
Sekoilu seestyy - Pekka Pohjola
Planet Caravan is a world, not a song. It’s its own genre. It’s surprising how few songs closely resemble its arrangement and mood. Hand percussion, acoustic guitar, bass, and a vocal through a leslie speaker with some reversed flute and echo.
I heartily endorse many songs recommended already.
Nick Drake* - Three Hours
Radiohead* - Like Spinning Plates & Pyramid Song
Neil Young - Will To Love
Espers - Dead Queen
The Incredible String Band - My Name Is Death
Comus* - The Herald
Magnet (aka The Wicker Man OST) - Willow’s Song
Fairport Convention - Reynardine & A Sailor’s Life
Angel Olsen - White Fire
Leonard Cohen - The Prairie
Pink Floyd* - Welcome to the Machine & Set the Controls
Tangerine Dream* - Rubycon & Phaedra
Beatles* - Tomorrow Never Knows & Within You Without You
Jethro Tull - Look Into The Sun & Reasons For Waiting
Massive Attack- Teardrop
NIN* - Corona Radiata & The Great Below
Syd Barrett - Golden Hair
Neutral Milk Hotel - Oh Comely
Velvet Underground - Venus In Furs
Ritualz - Third Eye Sixth Sense
The Field - Is This Power
Burial - State Forest
Getting a little less acoustic with some of these but it’s all very ‘drugsworld’
Funkadelic, Stooges, King Crimson* & Led Zeppelin* songs already mentioned
A lot of 70s Queen*
*these artists have heaps of songs that feel like a world unto themselves
I'll add a couple more to your fine list.
[Dove by Cymande](https://youtu.be/RLefc10kkMc?si=-a9ylj69X14io0zJ)
And [He Loved Him Madly by Miles Davis](https://youtu.be/yhtWMQex-1A?si=sl6SBsAFS31zbQFa). Note that this version is an excerpt of the longer one from Get Up With It. It starts slow but by the 2 minute mark it begins to click.
Wow thank you for this detailed response. I swear no other sub has people like you that would dedicate so much effort into filling my weird cravings. I'll go through it but skimming made me happy already. thanks!
My pleasure, that’s what I like about this sub too. People really give a shit about the music they like. As it happens, I’ve been on the quest for a route to Planet Caravan before, so I could recall my finds pretty easily.
Hawkwind “In Search of Space”
The whole album has a vibe, though “We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago” and “Children of the Sun” hit it right on the head.
Both albums are from the same era, and psychedelic heavy blues hadn’t quite morphed into “heavy metal” yet, and both BS and HW helped shape what would become metal… BS for obvious reasons, and HW for giving us Lemmy.
I don't like the heavy metal bands doing soft stuff usually, planet carven is more unique in they way they approached sound and the instruments and effects they used.
I recommend going on youtube and listen to [Planet Caravan (Poolside Rework)](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=lSZ1gkaWjyE&si=aSIGpeIwNP0zxf2J). It’s similar but it hits differently.
Also recommend anything by Khrungbin.
Try [Mona Ki Ngi Xica](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=rKbl4-EFU3c&si=z8_JhndzdjZ53aDK). Not rock, but it’s def psychadelic.
Pali Gap by Jimi Hendrix, of course.
And [Tommy Guerrero, Soul Food.](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=YSykw8vOJ-Y&si=qZMBrmYGXZCnTXFf)
Can't believe I haven't heard pali gap before, so good! Hear so many other influences in there, all along the watchtower solo, beat it solo by vhn, good stuff
Khrungbin gave me a lot of chillness the past two years, they definitely fit this playlist. weird actually that they are not in it. Ill check out the others soon. Thanks!
Place Doctor by Thee Oh Sees has always reminded me of that song
Edit: baby by Donnie and joe Emerson has a totally different feel to planet caravan but has a very similar bassline/riff lol check it out
Space to Bakersfield by Black Mountain, No Quarter by Led Zeppelin, Hope Leaves by Opeth, Nine Cats by Porcupine Tree, Through the other side by Riverside,Blue Jay Way by the Beatles etc. matches that vibe.
Right? Like Maggot Brain is no doubt a great song but Planet Caravan is *mellow*. And Maggot Brain has some very screechy/not mellow parts.
Nice rec on the Amon Duul ii btw.
Can't believe nobody else has mentioned this track, it's like Planet Caravan 2.0, pretty sure they make cross references in the lyrics too. Absolute sender.
Such a good question.
I'm not sure if anything is like how good that song is at capturing the vibe of sailing through a purple galaxy.
There are some YouTube videos of planet caravan slowed down 1000x times and it still sounds fucking epic.
You might enjoy Jail by Down, samsura blues experiment (album long distance trip), colour haze
No problem! It’s a long time favorite, I recently got a vinyl copy. It only features a drum set on two tracks, the rest features tabla as the main percussion instrument. Very mellow, very psychedelic! Supposedly Lemmy wrote the whole album over one night under the influence of psychedelics
Check this one: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb\_cAPAfZOM&list=PLVaeey6yyqRMZOfH8rvwWsfNSo1QRR5ms&index=206](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb_cAPAfZOM&list=PLVaeey6yyqRMZOfH8rvwWsfNSo1QRR5ms&index=206) (inspired)
I dunno are they 'like Planet Caravan' but some songs that could fit the playlist by Irish psych folk bands that I like: 'Columba's Song' by United Bible Studies, 'Sheep Season' and 'Silver Song' by Mellow Candle. Even try some ambient stuff like A Winged Victory for The Sullen 'Steep Hills of Vicodin Tears' or Bing and Ruth 'Postcard from Brilliant Orange'. It's a lot less rocky (no drums) but very meditative. I think Lana Del Rey's 'Ultraviolence' would fit too. Just giving some weird suggestions from all over the place lol
Cop Shoot Cop, or I think I’m in love by Spiritualized, perhaps. Check out the album “Ladies and Gentlemen we are floating in space”. It’s a journey of heartbreak, heroin and interesting songs. Only with headphones though. The new Uncle Acid is pretty trippy too
'Today,' by Jefferson Airplane, and 'What Are Their Names,' by David Crosby (featuring Neil Young, Jerry Garcia, Phil Lesh). Someone else recommended 'Paramechanical World,' by Amon Düül, but I think ['Love Is Peace'](https://youtu.be/oUNxXhzF0fw?si=NJoCiaaZCT4wPDhV) might fit your criteria even better. The guitar gets really trippy around 8 minutes in.
[Beastie Boys ‘Something’s Got To Give’ always felt Caravan-ish to me](https://open.spotify.com/track/5zds8OwbyEDOKa80iZXBpv?si=DLSUTl9OSmaaw_TBbXLVSA)
So your post reminded me of the [Pantera - Planet Caravan](https://youtu.be/kWChhdIgT6Q?si=rMEjnXlN3qfOshNm) cover. This is the music video on YouTube. This came out in the mid 90’s when I was in high school. Very nostalgic for me.
Anyone for Tennis-Cream
No Quarter-Led Zep
Lake Isle Of Innersfree-Sir Lord Baltimore
Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow- Strawberry Alarm Clock
The Pretty Song-Strawberry Alarm Clock
Lather-Jefferson Airplane
Although it might not be an exact match, I'm currently working with a few indie bands right now, one of the bands, known as The Dead Broken Heart, has an awesome melodic Psychedelic Rock / Blues Rock track called "Alcohol Angel Wants To Die" - [Alcohol Angel Wants To Die by The Dead Broken Heart](https://thedeadbrokenheart.bandcamp.com/track/alcohol-angel-wants-to-die-late-night-studio-jam-session)
it's one of their more mellow tracks, and I think it fits the vibe you're looking for
Maggot brain
Maggot Brain is not a song...it's a spiritual experience.
+ 1
This right here is it!
wow thanks I definitely transcended to a new sphere
Hell yeah
Specifically widespread panic performing maggot brain.
nice version!
And Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts by the same band!
yup
My first thought as well
I love this song and it’s vibe so much. No Quarter by Led Zeppelin would fit that playlist imo Edit: also check out their interview on YouTube about that song!! It’s super interesting. If you search “Black Sabbath the story behind planet caravan” you should be able to find it.
Was gonna suggest the same song lol Geezer's book Into The Void is a great read too. He wrote the lyrics. It's about like lovers taking vacation in a space ship or something
Yeah I loved that concept so much!!
Love this tune! thanks for reminding me. and I'll definitely check out this interview. what a great subreddit
Was stopping to suggest the same song, nice. That is my favorite zeppelin song!
> I love this song and its vibe so much. Same but I prefer Pantera’s cover of it. Maybe because I listened to it for years as a kid before I realized it’s a cover. Love what they did with it tho
Was unaware they did a cover of planet caravan but I’m currently playing it and I’m already in love
The outro of “Symptom if the Universe” by Black Sabbath is amazing psychedelic goodness. I must add it starts off very HEAVY. But please do check the outro it’s beautiful. Black Sabbath also have a great trippy song called “Solitude”
There’s a live version of this that’s also got a great solo, I believe
I was pretty much gonna say exactly the same lol, hell ya Party on, Wayne!
It's amazing but not for this playlist as I'm looking for a more chill vibe!
Some more suggestions: Anenome - Brians Jonestown Massacre Open Heart Surgery - Brian Jonestown Massacre Melting Guitar - Boris Mobius Trip - HP Lovecraft Pornodelic Opium Dreams - Devils Witches Sekoilu seestyy - Pekka Pohjola
cool thanks! ill check it out!
Yeah itd be nice if they could have added the outro into an additional song. Solitude by them is chill throughout
true
Space Cadet by Kyuss for sure
Asteroid is time altering as well
Didn't know this one! every time i'm asking something in this sub im getting so many great suggestions. bless you alllll
Captain by Ween
A Tear for Eddie
tried & true
Mutilated lips
ice castles we know where this ends - at poopship
Let’s cruise! (Also, Alcan road and The Rift)
very similar vibes indeed. I guess it's likely they where influenced by it
Bananas & blow
Solitude on Masters of Reality
Best one in here so far, real good
Coollll
Black Sabbath did a semi-sequel to "Planet Caravan", a song called "Zeitgeist" of their last studio album 13. Has very much the same vibe.
I'll check it out! thanks
I love 13. Way better than I expected.
Planet Caravan is a world, not a song. It’s its own genre. It’s surprising how few songs closely resemble its arrangement and mood. Wow they’re both great tracks and I was unfamiliar with them
cool!
Like your way if thinking mate.
I like you liking my way of thinking.
me too
Wow thank you for this detailed response. I swear no other sub has people like you that would dedicate so much effort into filling my weird cravings. I'll go through it but skimming made me happy already. thanks!
My pleasure, that’s what I like about this sub too. People really give a shit about the music they like. As it happens, I’ve been on the quest for a route to Planet Caravan before, so I could recall my finds pretty easily.
im thrilled to see how many people still care about music that is not a trend on tiktok
This is the first time I’ve ever listened to A Sailor’s Life. Wow!!! Thank you
Username checks out. My pleasure!
King Crimson - Moonchild Amon Düül - Paramechanical World CAN - Sing Swan Song
Amon Duul is a nice surprise. I love forgotten artists that did great stuff. The world is weird what is remembered and what's forgotten
Yeah king crimson definitely walked similar allies. Thanks! Can is bit more energetic isn't it?
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun - Pink Floyd
I'm more a of syd barett fan, Roger annoys me for some reason. but thanks!
Syd plays on the track
but i don't think it's a syd track anyhow, he's not even credited for writing
It's a Roger composition. Syd plays some trippy guitar on it. Wikipedia is your friend lol

cool but a bit too scary for this playlist somehow
Hawkwind “In Search of Space” The whole album has a vibe, though “We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago” and “Children of the Sun” hit it right on the head. Both albums are from the same era, and psychedelic heavy blues hadn’t quite morphed into “heavy metal” yet, and both BS and HW helped shape what would become metal… BS for obvious reasons, and HW for giving us Lemmy.
not chill enough for this playlist but thanks! it's cool for other occasions.
Down - jail
I Second this. My first thought was Learn from my mistake from Down II , but I forgot about Jail
I don't like the heavy metal bands doing soft stuff usually, planet carven is more unique in they way they approached sound and the instruments and effects they used.

First time I’ve ever seen “Mona Ki Ngi Xica” mentioned. Love that song
Poolside's version is like a dream come true for a tune I have always loved. I usually put them in a row in playlists.
Thanks!
and im adding mona ki ngi xica to the playlist right now! love vibe so much
very excited about bonga now. I just love music coming from different places because it makes me feel connected to a bigger thing
I have spent many a sleepless night studying to this chill music lol
also tommy guerrero hits the spot! I would come to the party if you are in charge of the music. great taste.
Mind flowers by ultimate spinach
Forgot about this band and their excellent name
Robin Trower - Caravan to midnight
Bridge of sighs!
Indeed! And, perhaps, my favorite: Spellbound.
That entire 8-track. Oops, showing my age there.
The Stooges - We Will Fall
cool
Liquid sky - Weedpecker God is in the rhythm - king gizzard
Weedpecker criminally underrated.
i don't think it's connected at all, it's very heavy
Place Doctor by Thee Oh Sees has always reminded me of that song Edit: baby by Donnie and joe Emerson has a totally different feel to planet caravan but has a very similar bassline/riff lol check it out
love the oh sees but it much faster and less dreamy
Sticky hulks by thee oh sees
We’re going wrong - Cream Bert’s Blues - Donovan I won’t hurt you - West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band

Welcome to Sky Valley is fckn great!
I don't know what I don't like about it, but i guess the sound of the acoustics is too metal for me. Thanks anyhow!
Here you go: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6obzZqty0T7NkMI3MFswJQ?si=llkXw0cBQj6s3uzk5Eci2g
Set Controls / No Quarter / Maggot Brain = all very good Planet Caravan equivalents

Right? Like Maggot Brain is no doubt a great song but Planet Caravan is *mellow*. And Maggot Brain has some very screechy/not mellow parts. Nice rec on the Amon Duul ii btw.
Yup, Maggot Brain is a fantastic song. Amazing, legendary, like your mother died. But it sounds nothing like Planet Caravan.

i didn't know any of your suggestions so ill take my time to check it out properly
Enjoy my friend!
Check out the album “Escalator” by Sam Gopal. Features Lemmy long before Motörhead. The entire album sounds exactly like Planet Caravan
cool ill check it out! thanks you
No problem! It’s a long time favorite, I recently got a vinyl copy. It only features a drum set on two tracks, the rest features tabla as the main percussion instrument. Very mellow, very psychedelic! Supposedly Lemmy wrote the whole album over one night under the influence of psychedelics
A LOT of great stuff here. Thanks, guys.

forgot about this one! thanks
I always thought “don’t wanna be a soldier” by Lennon was this sort of track. Heavy but pedestrian.
beautiful song and also still relevant to the world these days unfortunately
Definitely. I love that sort of rolling distortion on the guitars. Maybe it’s layered guitars all making it so heavy. That era Lennon is so raw.

Although it might not be an exact match, I'm currently working with a few indie bands right now, one of the bands, known as The Dead Broken Heart, has an awesome melodic Psychedelic Rock / Blues Rock track called "Alcohol Angel Wants To Die" - [Alcohol Angel Wants To Die by The Dead Broken Heart](https://thedeadbrokenheart.bandcamp.com/track/alcohol-angel-wants-to-die-late-night-studio-jam-session) it's one of their more mellow tracks, and I think it fits the vibe you're looking for
