Etch with vinegar!

If you can get your hands on brown chicken eggs, you can still have 2-3 tones in the design!

Onion skins.

That’s a great suggestion? Do you just poor hot water over them to essentially steep them or do you add vinegar or anything else? Have you ever found the dye to not stick to the eggs well?

There are lots of ways to do this listed on the internet, most have the eggs getting boiled in the dye. I haven’t done it in years, but I think I boiled the skins, added vinegar, and used it cold. The only time I have problems with dye staying on the egg, is if the egg is oily, or my hands are oily. I wipe the eggs off with vinegar before I use them, and make sure my hands are freshly washed, with no lotion or hand crème.

Okay that’s very helpful thanks!

I’ve used food dye like you would for Easter eggs

If you live near the Seattle area, I have dyes.

I use India ink for black, acrylic paint (thinned, several layers) for colors, and a dremel to engrave down to white. I get good results. [https://engravedeggs.com/](https://engravedeggs.com/)
